Need some advice please, thinking about buying a MBP

Hi all,
I currently have a powerbook G4 and have had it for about three years now. It runs great and I love the machine. I am a photographer, so I am running photoshop a lot! I was planning on upgrading to the macbook pro 2.33, but a friend of mine said that she has talked to quite a few people who have had problems with theirs (such as randomly shutting off and other various problems) and suggested I wait until the next updated version comes out. So I was just wondering what the general consensus is, is it a stable machine or am I better off to wait and are a lot of people having problems? Also, my powerbook gets pretty hot and I dont expect the macbook pro to be much different, but she also told me that the heat is extreme. Any thoughts? All advice is much appreciated! Thanks!
Macbook Pro 2.33   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Wait until the Universal/Intel version of Photoshop is released. You will be disappointed running the PPC version under Rosetta. Also, get plenty of RAM, at least 2 Gig.

  • I am new to LR and needs some advice please

    I have been using Raw shooter and have been shy of going over to LR.I am not a hugely knowledgeable user nor that technically minded. I purchased Scott Kelbys, and Martin Evenings book on LR and am learning as I go, I have been reading several threads on this site and I am concerned about all the negativity I am reading about LR being buggy, with problems?
    and how it seems that Adobe are not doing enough with LR to address any such issues? I am a canon user and issues relating to Canon raw are a particular worry. I am about to put my entire collection from Raw shooter ( On External LAcie drives) into the hands of LR in the future. Is this a wise decision? Please help.
    Also I want to get started if it is the right thing to do, my PC is getting on abit, with 4 yr old tech inside and only 1gb ram. I will soon get somthing more powerful with 2-4 gb ram. my second question is this. I will be running my libraries on external drives only ( LAcie F.A. Porsche).
    If I have imported my images without moving folders, with LR 1.2 loaded on my pc. If later I remove LR from it and reload onto a new PC will it see all my libraries again and know all my settings again without issue and without having to re-do everything. If that is the case then I had better wait until i upgrade the Pc, before I start any work with LR, which will be frustrating.??
    Apologies for a long question, but I am technically challenged. If anyone can assist me in these areas I would be grateful
    Paul Apps

    LR is not buggy and it converts Canon RAW files just fine. I run LR on a PC without any significant issues except speed. LR is too slow in some areas (importing images, browsing thumbs and previews, in particular) compared to other programs such as Photo Mechanic and ACDSee, but it is very stable on a clean computer. Many features need improvement but hopefully that will come in time. Meantime LR is quite good and I bet you will like it. There is nothing better overall.
    You should never risk your images to any software or anything else. Keep a backup copy of your originals separate from the copy you use for LR or other software. Plus LR is a non-destructive editor (pixels are not changed) so your images will be quite safe.
    As Tomrock said you can transfer your database to a new computer without difficulty. I do recommend a new computer, a 4 year old machine with 1gb RAM will probably be frustrating. Other folks say that a quad core processor and at least 2GB RAM is the way to go. My 2 year old dual core Pentium with 4GB RAM is definitely too slow for LR. You might also consider switching to internal hard drives in your new computer and use your external drives for backups. Internal drives for your images and catalog file will be much faster.
    Also Tom's advice about importing a few images at a time and then testing how things work is very good. It is definitely a mistake to import a huge volume of images until your are familiar with LR. It is very easy to delete a small catalog file and start over since a few hundred images imports quickly.
    Good luck.

  • Need some advice please

    I'm a graphic designer who works 80% of the time in Adobe InDesign with the remaining 20% split between PhotoShop and Illustrator. I produce professional print designs - brochures, advertising and other print-based work. At work I use a MacPro desktop.
    I currently own a G4 Powerbook 867mhz at home with the Adobe CS2 suite of applications but will soon need to upgrade to CS3 and my 512mb RAM and 40gb hard drive is only just holding out. I've been waiting, like many others for the iMac to be upgraded so I can purchase one. Now it's finally here though, I'm not sure whether to go for the 24inch 2.4ghz iMac loaded up with 4gig RAM or a Mac Pro and monitor.
    I've tried the iMac first hand in an Apple Store and it feels much faster than anything I've used at work and I think the glossy screen is amazing, so I have no problems there. I'm more concerned that posters in the forums are knocking the graphics card and saying that overall, iMacs aren't 'professional' machines.
    Surely a 24inch screen iMac with 4gig RAM will last me a few years - especially as I don't play games or use PhotoShop etc too much, mainly InDesign as I say. Is the poor quality of the graphics card only related to games or PhotoShop performance too?
    Can anyone help me decide? Thanks in advance.

    I am a Pro Photographer working in Photoshop CS3, CaptureOne Pro mainly, amongst a few others. I use a Mac Pro with Eizo CG220 display. It is a very fast and capable machine especially when batch processing hundreds of RAW files.
    Colour correction and colour profiling is somewhat complex to get it right, say for example between a display and a printer as both use different methods for creating colour, neither of which are related to one another, however colour profiling is easier from printer to matte screen than printer to glossy or vice versa. I would recommend using a hardware calibration device which does make life a lot easier, then depending on what program you use, disabling any colour correction carried out by the software. I will try and make it easier to understand.
    You state you do design, colour and graphics. I would suggest you bare one thing in mind if you opt for the iMac. The glossy screen will make the image very crisp and sharp however the colour profile allocated to your work will look different under a glossy screen than a matte screen, so, if you make any colour corrections on the iMac, it may look ok on your display but it will look somewhat washed out on a matte display if anybody else views the image.
    This is because glossy screens are tinted which changes the colour characteristics of the screen and makes colours appear richer, when in actual fact the colour levels in the working colour profile are nowhere near the levels you will see on a glossy screen.
    Glossy screens are also more prone to reflection issues, which may not be a problem for you, but the colour issue may well be if 90% of your work is for print and 10% for posters.
    If you submit one of your designs with a colour profile allocated to it, which appears fine on the iMac, the printing house which usually uses Quark for their media management and publishing work will happily accept your colour profile, however it may look, in regards photography for example, slightly over exposed, as most publishing houses use matte screens, so the print house would have to colour correct the file submitted. This slows down the publishing process and I would guess could affect future submissions or comissions they give you.
    Personally I went for Mac Pro with Quadro FX graphics card and the best monitor I could find as colour is one of the most important factors in photography. What I see on my screen is what comes out of the printer (as near as is possible).
    Bear in mind you can only max out the iMac to 4GB RAM, the Mac Pro can take 16GB RAM and there are also additional drive bays for larger hard drive to be accomodated if needs be. The iMac is unfortunately non upgradeable beyond memory for the end user without maxing out the machine on a build to order.
    On top of which the Core 2 Duo processor is really a mobile processor designed for laptops but used in many desktops on the market the Intel ViiV was the CPU Intel intended for desktops. The Xeon in Mac Pro's is a workstation CPU capable of more throughput since it uses a higher front side bus than the Core 2 Dup ( Xeon = 1333MHz as opposed to Core2Duo = 800MHz) amongst other factors to do with floating points, algorithms etc etc etc I won't go into because it's really boring (or interesting to those who care about such things).
    Hope this doesn't confuse or bore you and I hope this slant helps you in your decision.

  • How can I set up hotmail on my iphone? i need some advice please..

    i can't set up hotmail on my iphone.. please can someone tell me how to do that. thankyou..

    Is it a paid account or a free account?
    The free accounts can not be set up on the iPhone because the free Hotmail accounts do not user one of the two email server standards, POP3 or IMAP (it uses a proprietary HTTP protocol) which the iPhone requires.
    You will need to upgrade to one of the paid hotmail accounts before you can get POP3 access for your email.

  • Thinking about buying new mbp and have a 2009 mbp

    would I be able to just simply get the non ssd model and then take the ssd out of my old one put it into the new one and it should just work? I don't like the idea of backing everything up, taking my ssd out of the old one putting it in the new one then reformatting it doing a clean install and then restoring from time machine.

    I think the OP doesn't want to move stuff from the old drive to the new drive; quite the opposite. They want the old drive (the SSD) in the new Mac (which they would get with a regular drive, to be replaced).
    It's possible to move things to the old drive but will require some drive and file shuffling. I think what might work would be to take the old drive out, and put it into the newer machine, but don't start the new machine normally. Start up from the software installer resource (do they still provide these on discs?) and install the newer OS version over the old version on the old drive. I think that will work, but make sure you have a backup first.

    Already gone through troubleshooting guide a zillion times. Thanks.

    This worked for me... A little time consuming but once you get rolling it goes GREAT... Thanks....
    I got my artwork and saved it to my Desktop
    Opened up Microsoft Paint and clicked on "File" and "Open" and found it to get it on the screen to resize it
    Clicked "resize" and a box for changing it opened up
    Checked the box "Pixels" and "Unchecked maintain aspect ratio"
    Set Horizontal for 640 and Vertical for 480
    Clicked on "OK" and went back to "File" and did a "Save As" and chose JPEG Picture
    It came up "File Already Existed" and clicked "OK" (really did not care about the original artwork I found because wrong size)
    Went to iTunes and on the movie right clicked on "Get Info", clicked on "Details", then "Artwork"
    Go to the little box on the top left that shows your old artwork and click on it to get the little blue border to appear around it and hit "Delete" to make it gone
    Click on "Add Artwork" and find it where you put the one from above on your Desktop and hit "Open" and OK and your new artwork is now there and all good.
    Sounds like a lot of steps to follow but after around 5 or so you will fly through it. This worked perfect on my iPhone 6 Plus and I have artwork on my Home Videos now.

    I agree with LowLister, the best option for you to share the video online is to upload it to your online storage account for example : Box, Dropbox, SkyDrive (All of them provide free storage beginning from 2GB).
    You can upload the files which you want to share in this online storage and then they have sharing options in which you'll will get the link of the file to be sent and send the email. You're good to go!
    Tip : You can store multiple files for backup purposes.

  • I need some advice...

    Hi, I'm not quite sure where this topic should go exactly as it isn't about a specific topic. So plz fogive me if it's wrongly placed in your opinion.
    Anyway, I've been a long time fan of Linux and I don't want to have to stop using it. I've just recently converted my whole computer to a linuxbox only system, as I was running winxp(uke) before and couldn't stand it. It would lag during simple tasks like going from one directory to another and for no apparent reason, which aided me in my conversion. Enough about winblows, I don't need to tell you guys why it sucks, we all have our reasons. But there is just one thing bothering me now... and that is gaming. I am a huge fan of gaming and have been doing so for quite some time now (years) and well... gaming on linux hasn't been too pleasant for obvious reasons.
    1) the games I play except for quake3 are written and made to run solely on a winblows workstation.
    2) Wine and Winex3 have limited, but growing support for a range of games.
    3) Lastly the main game I would like to play (Steam CS 1.6) doesn't like to run on linux due to its constant updates, which throws WInex3 out of wack. Where it could have been working the day before but due to the update it no longer runs.
    I'm thinking of just making a partition for winxp(uke) so that I can game, but this isn't something I'm totally willing to do.
    Basically I need some advice and/or suggestions that anyone is willing to share with me.
    Thank you in advance.
    BTW: I'm not new to linux, I've been using it for almost 2 years now and have tried ALL of the distro's you can think of. (Arch is my distro of choice at the moment, along with slackware.)

    Enemy Territory is an excellent game, and it is totally free.
    I haven't played the free game from the US Army, but heard it is really good, and is totally free.
    I bought Return to Castle Wolfenstein, which plays perfectly in Single player mode, but I have some trouble in multiplayer mode (and I'm not an expert either).
    I bought Unreal Tournament 2004, which plays perfectly in both single player and online, but I simply suck at the game.
    I bought Never Winter Nights because I know the company has a linux version you can download once you have a registered copy.  I havent installed it yet, though, been playing UT2004.
    Doom3 is supposedly going to have a linux installer on the CD's, like UT2004 does.
    Anygame that uses OpenGL graphics instead of DirectX will prolly run under WINE or WINEX, or be easy for the original company to port (if they choose to).
    There are some "up and coming" linux only OpenGL games, light flightgear (a flight simulator), and a couple of 'massive online games".
    Betweet RTCW, EnemyT, Never Winter Nights, UT2004, and soon Doom3 - I have enough games to play, and thats without buying winex.
    Fergettabout Windows! You simply don't need it anymore.
    If you are determined to run Windows, get a removeable drive bay, and just swap boot drives when you want to swtich.  Or use GRUB if you want to select from multiple OS's.
    thx

  • Having some serious issues with my iPhone and need some advice

    I'm going to these two issues which have been occuring with me for the past weeks-
    1.) I am facing a problem with my iPhone 5's lightning port or the cable. This started happening all of a sudden; one second my phone is charging, and the other it is not. Even if it is slightly moved from its position, it would stop charging, and further shaking starts it again, so on and so forth. At first I thought the issue might be with my cable, so I asked my friend to bring his lightning cable to my house so we could test that. It happened again- one shake the phone will charge, another shake stops it. (Note that any kind of movement does this, not only shaking) I'm a bit skeptical about his (my friend's) cable too, though- it shows NOT CHARGING on his iPad while it is in fact actually charging. His cable is only 3-4 weeks old though, so this confuses me even more. I think the issue might be with my port, but as of now I cannot draw a valid conclusion to my problem.
    2.) The second problem is that I've noticed my battery drains a **** lot faster now- ever since the first issue started. I manage to get my phone charging by placing it very carefully on the table and it charges overnight. However, when I pick it up in the morning, and read some news, it drains from 100% to 99% in ~60 seconds. This never happened before. Before this, it used to be at 100% for at least 10-15 minutes (might be even more). If I reboot my phone, it shows 100% again, but it still drains a lot faster now. I know because I've been using this phone for the past 4 months now, and I know when it drains and when it does nots
    Please, help! I need some advice as to how I should approach this problem. My phone is in the warranty period, however, I would like to have an expert's opinion first.

    Hello,
    First: I've experienced the same problem with my iPhone 5. I've bought a new charger and it still did the same thing. I went to the Apple Store to get my iPhone checked out and they said that the pins inside my iPhone we're damaged, and I had to get a replacement.

  • Business Delegate pattern - need some advice

    Hi. First let me apologize for the long post. I could see no other way. Im building a system that quite large and I need some advice. The system is a type of transaction system, lets suppose a shopping cart. Im using struts taglibs and tiles for presentation, struts proper for controller, and POJOs for business logic. Also Im using OJB for my data tier.
    Now Ive been reading Pro Jakarta Struts (Apress), which BTW is a recommended read to anyone with novice experience in struts and related technologies. Ive assimilated most of the techniques and patterns described in the book, and most of them make sense to me. However, Ive hit a snag while reading the Business Delegate and Service Locator patterns.
    The way I had though of building my application before reading the book, was to have a wrapper class, such as the following:
    public class ShoppingCart {
      private IAuthenticationService authenticationService;
      private ITransactionService transactionService;
      public ShoppingCart() {
         authenticationService = new DBAuthenticationService();
         authenticationService = new DBTransactionService();
      public login(String username, String password) {
         String sessionToken = authenticationService.logon(username, password);
         return sessionToken;
      private boolean isValidUser(sessionToken) {
         bolean validUser =  authenticationService.isValidUser(sessionToken);
         return validUser;
      public performTransaction(sessionToken, TransactionVO) {
         if (!isValidUser(sessionToken) {
              throw new AuthenticationException();
         transcationService.performTransaction(TransactionVO);
      public editPreferences(sessionToken, PreferencesVO) {
         if (!isValidUser(sessionToken) {
              throw new AuthenticationException();
         authenticationService.performTransaction(PreferencesVO);
    }My idea was that my wrapper class would isolate all the business logic and could perform login service in case my application was ever to be used with other presentation layer than struts (standalone client, web services). However I believe that this overlaps the Business Delegate pattern and maybe even totally implements it. The way I understand the code Im reading in the book, they suggest having a BD for each major service such as AuthenticationServiceBD, TransactionServiceBD, etc However this would break my single point of entry for authenticating users. I really need some advice on my design and how it fits with the BD and SL patterns (or others). I would also like to know what you think/recommend of my authentication strategy.
    thanks in advance
    Raphael

    Thanks for your reply. This however, I understood. My concern is regarding my application in regards to business delegate pattern. You see I have this class (simplified for clarity):
    public class ShoppingCart {
       private ILoginService ls = new DBLoginService();
       private ITransactionService ts = new DBTransService();
       // and so on for all services I offer.
       //  then I mirror all the calls of my private interfaces
       //  and pass them through internally
       public String sessionToken login(String username, String password) {
            ls.login(username, password);
       public boolean addToCart(sessionToken, itemNo) {
            // check session
            ts.addToCart(sessionToken, itemNo);
       //  and so on
    }Multiple questions for this one:
    1) Am I not already implementing the Business Delegate pattern with my ShoppingCart class since all interfaces are private and all calls are mirrored from the wrapper class (ShoppingCart) to the private interfaces? All services are implemented as POJOs and I am not using JNDI at the present so I don't use the ServiceLocator pattern.
    2) I store a reference to the wrapper class (ShoppingCart) in the ServletContext so I can grab it from my Action classes. What do you think of this approach?
    3) How many BDs should an application contain. In my case I use just one. What is the advantage of using more?
    4) I create my own session tokens in case I ever want to use to business code in a non-web applications where sessions are not available readily. This brings about the problem that I can't pass the interfaces directly to the Action classes because the login session needs to be checked before any calls to services. So all methods include a sessionToken parameter which I use to check the session. This way, if I want to expose some of the services through web services, I can still use a login. What do you think of this approach.
    5) Any other remarks are very welcome...
    I really need help with this from an experienced programmer. Most things I can handle on my own but with this type of design issue, books just don't cut it. I need experience. I would really apreciate some feedback.
    Raphael
    ps: I would give all my Duke dollars for this (I only have 30), but I'm not sure how. If you want them I can create a dummy question and give them to you.

  • Songs disappearing. Need some advice.

    I need some advice regarind my ITunes library. I spent a lot of time importing all my cd's. I now have approx. 14,000 songs now. First I had put them all in as mp3's, then I heard about the quality and smaller size of AAC. I think that is where some duplicates came from. But some how I've ended up with up to 6 of a lot of my songs, at least it is showing 6 copies of many of my song in my ITunes library. But when I go to delete all but one of the songs, through ITunes, sometimes it is fine and sometimes I get the ! icon. I guess even though I left one in Itunes it actually deleted all copies. I did not know I was doing this because it doesn't show the ! icon until you go back and try to select the song. This took days and days to deleted over 6,000 duplicates.
    Now I'm finding some albums are missing songs and some are missing the whole albums even though they show in Itunes. I even have gone through and tried to "FIND" the songs some are really there but most are not. So how to I go about reconstructing the library. Is it best to try and find each one or just wipe (delete) my library clean and just reimport the entire library? I'm talking about reconstructing approximately 12,000 songs and I have no idea how many cd's.
    I just would like to know how you guys would handle this. Thanks for your help.

    WooHooooooo! Another quick update, only 5 minutes ago I found this link on credit karma http://www.creditonecards.com/pre-qualification.php?C1BSourceID=C1B1  that lets you prequalify for a credit card! Which I have tried many many many times  only to recieve the message sorry we couldn't prequalify you at this time but here are some SECURED cards you may like which sucks! I decided to try one more time at this link and was totally surprised to get preapproval for a platinum card yay! Mind you, this card is probably the worst card to get and I will probably never ever use it, just need it to help with my utilization scores. The fees are high, the rates are high, the balance is low........but oh well I am still doing the happy dance!!!

I have been a part of this forum for many years now and I have taken and heeded so much advice that my head is about to explode and now I just want to make sure I am not forgetting anything. I tried to keep it short  Last time I was on I hadn’t reached the 600 club yet. But I am here now in the 600 club! Still the low 600’s but its progress. Unfortunately slow progress because a lot has happened since I was last on here. I am now officially divorced. I finally have permanent steady income, no temp services anymore phew. I have had to reevaluate my budget and cut a lot of things out. No cable, no home phone, monitor my electric bill like a hawk and learn to like the darkness, cold in the winter and the heat in the summer. I have an older smart phone, had to do without the latest gadgets and gizmos, which truly hurts my heart because I am an electronic fiend. No tablets here, no high tech laptops. Instead of buying a new car and making payments I bought a really good used gas-efficient car cash, paid in full. But since it’s still a newer car I am paying for full coverage insurance, my only splurge. I have spent this time away from this forum truly taking heed to the lessons I learned on here and reflecting on my situation. I have paid nearly everything off! It took some time but I only have 2 creditors left ‘that I know of’ to pay.One of the creditors has not reported to the bureaus yet but I want to take care of them before they do. Most of the ones I paid have already fallen off because of SOL. I was getting to the point I had the problem where I didn’t just have bad credit, I had NO credit. I hadn’t opened any new accounts until this year. Just today I opened a $500 Secured Personal loan and a few months ago I opened a $300 Secured Credit Card at my credit union. I also applied for a Quicksilver CapOne card and was approved for $300. I just started school this year and there is now a financial aid loan of $1750 that is reporting on my credit report as deferred right now. I tried to prequal for some more but was denied by all of them. • I've been reading the comments re FCPX on MacBook Pro and now I'm scared. I'm taking a class now and thinking about buying to do videos for nonprofits. Won't be fancy stuff, but now wonder if it's a good choice. Also, heard Apple will drop support. Help?

    I've been reading the comments re FCPX on MacBook Pro and now I'm scared. I'm taking a class in FCPX and thinking about buying to do videos for nonprofits. Won't be fancy stuff, but now wonder if it's a good choice. Also, a classmate who was in CA last weekend said he heard that Apple will drop support of FCPX. Any truth? Advice?. I'm on 10.7.4 with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz. Thanks.

    While it is against the TOU of these boards to speculate on future products/updates what Thomas said is right: FCPX is quite a new product and it doesn't make any sense to drop it now.
    The only thing that MIGHT get dropped at a certain point is support for older hardware/OS as FCP X progresses.

  • I was thinking about buy an 128GB SSD Macbook Pro, will it work with my external hard drive if i plugged it in through USB still?

    Well basically I've heard the hype about SSD and i was thinking about buying a mac with a 128GB SSD, but i was wondering, if i plugged in my 320GB external hard drive, would it work with an SSD mac? Or, do i need and internal hard drive for it to be compatible with my external one?

    You can replace your internal drive with a SSD and buy an external enclosure for your 320GB from OWC.
    No problems.
