Need some Boot Camp help!

Hey,
I've been following along on the Boot Camp Installation Guide, and I've successfully reached the point (I think) of creating a 32GB (actually shows in finder at 32.11GB) partition for Windows to be installed on. Now, when I boot into Windows Setup, and I'm looking for the correct partition, all I see is one partition "C:Partition1 [Unknown]".... I didn't select it, I backed out of the Setup, because I didn't want to accidentally select it and overwrite my Mac OS X Partition. I didn't see the <BOOTCAMP> partition in the list, and that's what I was looking for. It displays in the Finder, but not in the partition list for Windows setup..... what to do, what to do?

Hey man,
So I slipstreamed my SP1 disc into an SP2 disc.. really neat concept btw.. check it out:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxpsp2slipstream.asp
I recreated the partitions... gave XP 20gb of space (I don't need very much... saving docs and multimedia in mac os x)... popped in the disc, restarted the mac, AND SUCCESS SO FAR... it recognized the C: Partition 3 BOOTCAMP Fat32!!! Never in my life I thought I'd say I was happy to see a properly displaying partition table.
Setup is in progress (I'm on my other computer)... I will advise you of the end results. Btw: I chose NTFS (Quick) for formatting... was that okay? I understand the differences between NTFS and FAT and i think NTFS is better for me.

  • Help Needed Installing Boot Camp

    Hi,
Hope someone out there is able to help. I have tried searching the forum but none found.
I have just upgraded my harddisk using Carbon Copy Cloner.
The new harddisk boots up fine.
But when I tried to install Boot Camp on the new harddisk using the Boot Camp Assistant, it gave me this error
" The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition".
I have already partitioned using Disk Utility as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume.
I have also Repair Disk Permissions.
    The OS is Leopard 10.5.4
Please help. I could not even get pass the first step in installing Boot Camp.
    Thanks

    Problem solved.
    1) Repartitioned in GUID.
    2) Carbon Copy to clone the harddisk.
    3) Run Boot Camp Assistant.

  • Windows 8 won't work in Boot Camp, help?

I have a late 2011 MackBook Pro 15" and I have tried multiple ways to get Windows 8 on it via Boot Camp.  I don't want to use a Virtual Machine because I need the dual booting ability.  When I try to burn the Windows 8 .ISO 32 or 64 Bit onto the DVD Disk Utility says "unable to burn Windows8 consumer preview (not recognized)".   The .ISO is from the Microsoft website so I don't understand why Disk Utility won't burn it.  I burn the .ISO through Finder and when I put it in my MacBook with Boot Camp up and running, Boot Camp just tells me to insert the Windows disk.  So Boot Camp won't read it.  Someone please help me, I've been at this for quite a while now and I haven't had any luck.

I decided to give Windows 8 another try this morning and have installed it successfully on my 2009 MacBook Pro. It is fully functional (with audio, keyboard controls) after performing the following steps:
    - Burned 64-bit Windows 8 Consumer Preview DVD at 4x
    - Opened Boot Camp Assistant and created a support disc (I installed this on an external dos drive)
    - Allocated around 35GB to Windows
    - Restarted and performed Windows installation
    - Important: Installed Windows updates (this makes the OS stable)
    - Installed Boot Camp drivers from support disc
For safety, I created some restore points along the way. Before installing the updates, the system hung quite a few times and there was no sound. After the updates and boot camp drivers, everything is now working fine. Good luck with your installation.

  • Installing XP on Boot Camp help for 1st Generation Mac Pro

    hi all,
i am trying to make my way through the documentation so that i can get WINDOWS XP back on my first generation Mac Pro since i need to run some programs for work. the old drive that i had this information on was running Snow Leopard (I believe) but it has died.
i have a formatted Fat 32 drive in Bay 2 and i am running Lion on my OS drive in Bay 1 and i am hoping someone can point me to the correct URL for doing this.
my understanding is that i need to use Boot Camp 4 but there appears to be a number of different versions of 4 and i am also having a hard time remembering /how/ to do this. i guess i download the Boot Camp 4 version that i need to my OS drive in Bay 1 and i somehow install this on the drive in bay 2? then i insert the XP disk and it automatically installs itself on this drive?
do i have to do something special with drivers?
ALSO, is there anything to be careful about if i have a PARTITION on the drive in Bay 1 that contains a Boot Camp of Windows 7?
    TIA

I would always have a wired connection, even if you generally want/need to use wireless.
I am not up on Airport or how to install.

  • [MB Air 2013] Windows 8 says I need a Boot Camp driver update, but download is unsupported

    Hi all,
I'm on a brand new 2013 MB Air running Windows 8 64 bit with Boot Camp.
Windows is running fine, but I just recently noticed that I had a message telling me I had a driver missing and needed to update Boot Camp.
Now, this computer is less than 1 week old, so I checked my Boot Camp verison first and it does say that I'm running Boot Camp 5.
Just to compare the drivers, I downloaded the suggested update (from Apple, Boot Camp 5.0.5033) and put it on an extra USB drive.
When I compared the drivers, the new download did contain significantly more drivers for various hardware(most of which I don't have), so I tried to run it from the USB drive.
At that point I got the "Boot Camp x64 is unsupported on this computer model error".
I'm running Windows 8 64 bit, so I don't see why BCx64 is unsupported, and I'd really like to get the "driver update needed" message resolved.
Am I being directed to the wrong dowload? Do I even need this one?
Should I be running an update through OS X even though the message is coming from Windows 8?
Any ideas on how to proceed would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

The actual answer is if you look at the download page at the bottom, you will see a link for supported devices.  You will notice that the Macbook Air 2013 is NOT listed.
This upgrade does not apply for the newer MAcBook Air.  The current driver set you have is correct.  No upgrade is necessary.  It is only for the older Macbook Airs.
    Hope this helps.

  • Problem with Boot Camp - Help!!

    Hi everyone,
So I just got a new MacBook and installed Windows XP Home Edition through Bootcamp. I followed the computer certification guidelines of my college (so that I can connect to the network), i.e., I installed Symantec Antivirus and Windows Defender (required), and also Firefox and MS Office, and for good measure, I installed AdAware and Spybot (both free versions). I did not use the internet at all and scanned the totally-unadultered computer, deleting the very few things that popped up on Adaware and Spybot.
However, the very next morning, Windows Explorer kept getting closed by "Data Execution Prevention" every time I tried to start Windows. (It says, "Instruction at 'Ox8bb9ed475' referenced memory at 'Ox8b9ed465'. Memory could not be 'written'".) Essentially, I can't use Windows and no amount of restarting remedies this.
I took my MacBook to the Genius Bar at an Apple store and they said the problem was most likely Symantec Antivirus - apparently, Symantec has lots of problems with Bootcamp; they also recommended using Parallels instead. But since Penn requires Symantec to certify a computer, I don't know what to do about this (not to mention Windows won't run anyway)! To be sure, the Apple guys were very rushed and seemed to be speculating, so I'm not sure how to take their advice.
Does anyone know what might be wrong? I remember reading that some current students at my school run Bootcamp just fine, and the tech dept. suggests using it as well. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated; I just don't want problems to occur once I start classes. Thanks so much.

Perhaps you should post this question in the Boot Camp forum rather than here. This is not the proper forum for dealing with Boot Camp or Windows installation problems.
I would consider reinstalling Windows. After verifying that it is working you can install Symantec AntiVirus and Defender, but I would not install anything else until you are sure the system is working properly. Note that you must turn off antivirus programs when you install new software. Failing to do so can result in defective installations.
Be sure you have carefully read the Boot Camp documentation before installing anything.

Ok, so I am trying to install boot camp on my mac. I partitioned it, and I inserted my Max OS X Install disc 1, and click start installation. The Installer Disc Could Not Be Found. Insert your Windows installer disc and wait a few seconds for the disc to be recognized.
    Why wont it work?

You need the Windows disk, not the Leopard disk.
You are installing Windows, not Leopard.
The Installer Disc Could Not Be Found. Insert your Windows installer disc and wait a few seconds for the disc to be recognized.
    Why wont it work?
It's looking for your XP or Vista disk.

  • Boot Camp help on MacBook Pro with no DVD drive

I purchased a 2010 15" Pro from a friend that just ordered a new Mac. He removed the CD and installed a 128 SSD as the primary drive and used a DVD shell kit that now houses the 2.5 SATA drive as the 2nd drive.
I want to load Win 7 using Boot Camp but I am running into a problem. I have downloaded all of my drivers and have a USB DVD attached. I get as far as installing windows in the Boot Camp setup, the Mac reboots to install 7 but when it reboots I get a flashing icon at startup the switches between an 'X', an 'apple' logo and the 'NO' symbol (circle with a slash).
How do you load windows with no DVD?
I made a bootable USB from my 7 ISO but that doesn't seem to work either. Any suggestion?
    Mike P

ISO issue: burn to DVD has to use another program or if you use Disk Utility use the slowest 2x burn speed
A driver is provided in download for MacBook Air models that lack a DVD.
Swap the superdrive back for the install is what 98% finally bit the bullet and works.
There is also an issue with having two drives present during Windows install.
So you need a USB-DVD driver on USB flash for those Macs that do not have a DVD (no one uses CDs)

  • Ethernet Printer w/ Windows/Boot camp - help

I have just installed Boot Camp and Windows XP/SP2 on my iMac. All is well, except I can not get the iMac, when running Windows, to print to my ethernet-connected HP LaserJet 1200n. It works great when running OSX. The iMac is connected via an ethernet hub to both the printer and my router. It finds and communicates perfectly with the router. It will not, however, find the printer. I have tried all of the miserable "wizards" that I can find, but no luck. Supposedly Windows has the driver for the printer, but it can not find it. What am I doing wrong? Thank you!

    Thanks. Two questions:
    1. I was told that the drivers were part of Windows XP Pro, and even if not present the wizard should "find" an unknown printer. Are these two "facts" true or false? (I'm new to Windows)
    2. I assumed that this forum, "Windows Compatibility", would be the proper forum for this type of question (compatibility of an ethernet printer with Windows), and that the Boot Camp group would be for quetions specific to Boot Camp rather than to how to get Windows to work with a printer. Again, true or false?
Since I'm new to this I could use some direction. Thank you!

  • HD already partitioned -  what do I need from Boot Camp?

    Hi guys,
I partitioned my HD when I installed Leopard, and now I want to install XP. I tried to run Boot Camp, but it refused to start because my HD was already partitioned. So do I actually need to run Boot Camp before I install windows? Or is it ok if I dont? What does it do/provide besides HD partitioning?
    Thanks in advance
    A

For Boot Camp to run the way it should you need to install OSX using the entire HD then run the Boot Camp Utility to partition the drive. Once that is done insert the Windows CD and install. Once Windows has installed then insert the Leopard disc or the first disc of your Leopard recovery set (while in Windows) and run the .exe file on it which will contain all the drivers that you need. When starting up your Mac hold the Option key down to bring up the boot menu so you can choose what OS you wan to run.
You MUST run the Boot Camp Utility for this to work. I have Vista on mine for gaming and Boot Camp worked very well.

  • VMware Fusion vs. Parallels (with Boot Camp) -- help please!

Hello. I have just reinstalled Mac OS X (Leopard) on my MacBook and am looking to install Windows XP SP2. I will be installing a Boot Camp partition -- I know that much -- but I also want to use Parallels or Fusions so that I have the option of running the Boot Camp partition within OS X. Somehow, over my years as a Mac user, I have acquired both of these applications (Fusion and Parallels), and I was wondering if anyone has any information on the differences between the two. Two questions:
1.) As I just mentioned, I'm just looking for any information on the differences between the two apps -- what features one offers that the the other doesn't -- why I might want to choose one over the other -- and so forth.
2.) Since I have both apps, would it be possible to have both installed at the same time? In other words, could I have both Fusion and Parallels installed on my computer, and then, when it comes time to open Windows, choose which app I want to open and use? (not sure there'd be any point to this, but just in theory, could it be done?)
Thanks in advance -- any info in regard to either question is much appreciated.

Thanks for the replies. Although I've never used Fusion before, I've installed Parallels with Boot Camp partition three or four times before on this computer, and it has always worked great for me, so I know I want to use Boot Camp. And as far as the application goes, sounds like I'll be using Parallels, mainly because it's what I'm used to. That Wikipedia link was exactly what I was looking for -- I had checked Wikipedia before I posted the topic here, but I didn't find that comparison page. Anyways, they look about the same (Parallels and Fusion, that is) for anything I'd be concerned with, but where there were any differences, they seemed to work in favor of Parallels (except for Linux-related features, in which Fusion seemed to have the upper hand, but I don't use Linux). So, again, thanks for taking the time to respond -- much appreciated. Have a good one.

  • Windows 7 RC on Boot Camp help

    Hey Guys,
    I have a macbook with leopard 10.5.6.
I want to run the windows 7 RC using boot camp. I have read instructions and they all say that after windows has installed i should put my leopard disc in to install the drivers for windows. My problem is that the macbook does not come with that disc!
    What should i do??
    Regards
    sMC

i got it from apple. i have read on sites that only the pro comes with the discs.
That's not true. All Macs ship with an installer disk (or disk set) that has Mac OS X as well as the applications bundled with the particular model of Mac. If you didn't get the installer disk with your system, contact Apple (if you got the system from an Apple Store, retail or online), or the dealer if you purchased the system from an independent Apple reseller.

  • I need some all around help...

I'm brand new at linux, and I have been using Windows xp for years, so I have no clue what I'm doing. I'm all installed, and it works fine, no errors, but I need some tips on doing some stuff.
I am trying to mod my .bashrc to add color, as in the wiki, but it doesnt open the actual file. Instead, nano keeps wanting to create a new file from scratch. I went ahead and filled in a new one, but it does nothing, what do I need to do? Is the .bashrc under a different name in the directory?
Next question... I  am using a windows laptop to do all my internet, etc stuff, and the arch box is separated from the internet. I'm using wireless, and the arch box doesn't have a card, so I cant get it on the web right now. I want to install a GUI, most likely kde, but I have no clue as to how to put stuff on the arch box. All I have availible for data transfer is a 4gb usb jump-drive, and it has all of the kde packages on it, but I'm not sure how to access them to install them.
Aaaand...... the last question... If possible, is there a command that will list the directories of the arch box, so I can see where I'm at and where things are; I havent the foggiest idea of how this thing is layed out, or where the usb drive would be in the directories.

Peeples Mcnasty wrote:Whenever I go to fill in the user's passwor, the box doesn't register the key-presses. It will only register non-letters. I'm still tryig to get to the bottom of it, so, until then I'm resorting to root as my login.
Can you rephrase that? I don't really understand what you mean by register. Are you aware that password prompts in general won't echo anything? So normally, when you enter your password, nothing will change on the screen but the password you just entered is there.
Now, if I had to create a .bashrc, where would I need to go to find out what all must go into it?
Nothing has to go in there . You don't even have to have one, it all depends on what you want. You can put aliases in there (see man alias), define functions and environment variables, set your prompt and lots of other stuff. If you want examples you can take a look at threads like this one. Some of this stuff might be a bit overwhelming, so perhaps you should leave that alone until you have your install completed . What are you referring to when you say "Add color" ?
Regarding your usb drive, notice that it won't be mounted automatically until you configure some kind of automount (KDE wil do that for you). Mounting means making your usb drive accessible at some directory in the filesystem. So to access your drive you do the following:
    Plug in drive
    mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt
Your usb drive doesn't have to be sdb1, if you have multiple harddisks in your box, those usually come first, so your first harddisk is sda, the second sdb and so on.  sda1 is the first partition on the first harddisk, in most cases your usb drive will come after the disks, so if you have one harddisk your usb drive is usually sdb.
Then you can install kde like this:
First change to the dir with the packages, if you put them in some subdirectory just hang that behind mnt/:
    cd /mnt/
use ls to see if they are there. If that is the case copy them into your pkgcache.
    * will choose everything in that directory, if there is something other than packages, you should choose the packages to copy by hand
    cp * /var/cache/pacman/pkg
after that you can use pacman to install the kde group:
    pacman -S kde
There might be some (or in case of kde probably many) dependencies which you didn't put on your usb drive. Pacman will tell you if there are. To get a list of urls to download those you can use
    pacman -Sp kde
    Good luck
I just refreshed Regarding pacman -U, pacman -U won't install dependencies automatically and will just stop if a dependency is missing, so if you use pacman -U to install packages with dependencies you will have to resolve those by hand and install them with --asdeps.

It also happens when i try to burn a cd with nero, i have WMP but don't use it. so now i really hope to get an answer or i have no other choice but to take it to a repair shop. SO !!PLEASE HELP ME!!

    no problems about the delay.
the 0x8E is reasonably generic. so let's try proceeding on two fronts.
1st front: we'll get a minidump to the Apple Engineers for a look
(the minidump can help identify the driver that seems to be causing the issue here.)
To set up your machine to capture a minidump, right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", select the "Advanced" tab, select the "Startup and Recovery" Settings button, select "small memory dump" from the popup. When it crashes, look for the MiniDump file. It's usually in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Minidump" and is called something like Mini<number>-<number>.dmp.
Find that file and send it as an attachment to this email address.
in the email to Roy, be sure to include the following information:
    - A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where the issue is being discussed
    - The username you are using in the thread
    - The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
    - the version of Windows you are using (mention service packs)
    - A concise description of the issue you are seeing
    - The exact text of the error message you are seeing
2nd front: checking on a few possibilities ourselves while waiting for feedback on the minidump
    (a) device filter conflicts: blue screens with itunes while burning can be caused by device filter conflicts (i've seen 0x8Es before in cases of conflicts with old Roxio products). so perhaps try the techniques from the following document:
iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting CD issues caused by device filters
    (b) malware:
malware is a known cause of 0x8Es. try downloading fresh definitions and running vigorous virus and spyware scans. if your security software providers offer them, try running online scans too. (they can sometimes pick up an infection in cases where the security software on the PC has been compromised.)
if your security software providers don't offer online scans, try running the Symantec online virus check. (apologies in advance ... it takes an eternity to complete.)
    Symantec Security Check
