Need some education on frame rates

I am puzzled about the relationship between frame rates and shutter speed. This may not be strictly an Adobe issue, but you guys seem to know everything! I am using a DSLR camera (Canon 60D) and have it set for 1080 @ 24fps. Because the camera's auto exposure setting for movies was very overexposed, I tried setting it for manual exposure. I simply look at the view screen while adjusting shutter speed and aperture until it looks right to me. My shutter speeds can be all over the map. This worried me because I had seen a how-to video which explained what shutter speed is right for the particular frame rate desired. Yet the videos that are coming out of my camera when I set it manually look just fine. Can someone explain this to me?

Shutter speed is more a function of still photo exposure, Jordan. It really doesn't figure into your video's exposure, which is pretty much all set by the lens's F-stop. In other words, video shot at 24p is not better for low light than video shot at 30 fps. So don't confuse frame rate with shutter speed.
Frame rate is pretty much a function of the video format itself.
Standard NTSC video is 29.97 frames per second.
Standard PAL is 30 fps.
24p is a more advanced video frame rate that's used to give your video a more film-like quality.

  • Quick Notation Question - Data Rates/Frame Rates/Interlacing

Finally upgraded to a decent prosumer camera and I'm trying to decipher what the manual is telling me about the many different formats it shoots and and the associated options.  I keep seeing things like "There are two basic shooting modes: 720p and 1080i/p.", which I'm finding confusing.  In my understanding, the "p" in 720p means progressive video and the "i" in 1080i means interlaced.  So what do I make of 1080i/p?
On top of this, my camera shoots in "native" mode, which drops duplicate frames used in "over 60" formats.  This will give me variations in the notation like:
    720/24pN
    720p Native 60 fps
    1080i/24p
    1080/24PN
Can someone give me a quick primer about frame rate vs data rate and explain how to read these notations?  I'd appreciate it quite a bit.
    Thanks!

There are so many cameras, capable of so many different formats that providing a manufacturer and model could be helpful in this discussion.
Jim's answer is absolutely correct but I'm going to re-state for clarification.
The i/p designation means you can chose to record as interlaced or progressive for a given resolution.
It sounds like your camera is designed to "capture" images at 60 frames per second, selecting "native" mode means extra frames are deleted and only the desired frames, based on frame rate setting, are recorded to memory. The advantage of "native" @ 24fps is you save space on your memory card. The advantage of NOT using "native" mode is that all 60 frames per second are recorded, but the file metedata tells playback software to only show the frames needed for the specified frame rate (i.e. 24). Since all 60 frames per second are recorded, you use more memory but you also have the option of retrieving all the those frames, if you so desire, at a later time (i.e. for smoother slo-mo).
To be honest I don't know what your spec of 1080i/24p means. If that is truly an option then I would guess it means it will record a 24p image but the metedata would indicate the file should playback at 30fps interlaced by adding the proper 3:2 pulldown. This would give you that "film" look in a broadcast compatible format.
For the most part, you don't want use use any interlaced settings. Very few display devices still in use can properly display interlaced images. Interlacing is only required in some broadcast specifications.
    To answer the second part of your question;
Frame rates are an indication of how many times the moving image is captured over a given period (per second). Higher frame rates means smoother, more "real life" motion. Data rates can generally be considered an indication of image or audio quality. Higher levels of compression result in lower data rates and (generally) lower quality. If squeezing more hours of footage on fewer memory cards is more important than getting the best image quality, choose a lower data rate. Higher frame rates (more images per second) inherently require a higher data rate to retain the same quality as fewer frames at a lower data rate.

  • If I "modify" a clips frame rate is this a permanent alteration, as in Apple Cinema Tool?

I have some footage shot at 59.97 FPS and need to interpret the frame rate at 23.98.   If I do this via the "modify, interpret footage" menu options, will this permanently alter the clip?  In Apple Cinema Tools, it permanently alters the footage.
    Thanks!

It doesn't affect the original media.

  • Frame rate conversion?

    Hello,
I need to do a frame rate conversion and interlace of 24P to 29.97 interlaced for inclusion into A 29.97 timeline.
    I'm on Win 7 and CS6.
Is any plugin required with CS6?
Or, can After Effects do it alone?
If a plugin is required, what is the best one for quality?
Or what stand-alone utility is most highly recommended?  I thought I'd read on a Google search that Twixtor or "Magic Bullet" by Red Giant. I just spoke to Red Giant and they said they have nothing that does this.
    Thanks!

    Thanks, Jim.
I've heard this is now possible. I guess I'll do this in Premiere if it comes to that. The actual editor is on FCPX and resides in Stokholm, while I'm here in the U.S.
I've been told that FCPX can also just conform it as well as a Premiere CS6 can. True?
For some reason they are having a audio sync issue with audio which was recorded externally, at 29.97fps.
That editor is not a pro and I'm tentatively under the assumption that problem section of the timeline is related to one camera out of two, which was recording in 24P when it should have been set to 29.97.
The timeline has all video and all externally recorded audio in 29.97, except for a one section of video that is 24P.
I think their problem is loss of sync between that 24P section of video and the corresponding 29.97 external audio.
Is it possible that even if FCPX properly conforms the 24P camera section to 29.97 properly, there could still be a loss of sync the corresponding external audio for that section?
That's the only plausible reason I can think of currently. That's why I'm thinking that a conversion before importing into the program may be the correction needed
In other words, is video that is automatically conformed to a timeline's settings going to sync with externally recorded audio that already matches the timeline settings?
    Thanks!

  • How to change Flex Application frame rate at runtime

    hello,
i have Flex application that need to change the Frame Rate at
    runtime.
when i am changing it by using the slider component, here the
    code:
    private function onChangeSlider(e:Event):void
    frameRate = sliderFR.value;
    trace(frameRate);
    <mx:HSlider id="sliderFR" x="452" y="765" width="378.2"
    minimum="1" maximum="50" liveDragging="true" snapInterval="1"
    value="25" change="onChangeSlider(event)"/>
the value is changed, but the frame rate is not changed.
when i insert the binding to the <Application> tag i
got error on this one, because i can't bind there items for the
    application level.
how can i change the Flex frame rate at runtime?

    i found the solution!
in Flex application you have frameRate properties that
doesn't work at runtime in the ActionScript code.
if you have a video that you want to change the speed of it,
you need to change the stage.frameRate (of all the Player itself).
and there is a catch here. if you will try to change it right after
the application will start (like in: creationComplete event) you
    will have a runtime error.
what you need to do is, change the stage.frameRate value
after the all application is started from a button or other event
    in the system.
this is working grate for fast/slow FLV playing
    enjoy!

  • Want frame rate of 30 fps

I create animations at 30 fps. When I put them in FCE HD the last frame is left out or black. I need to set the frame rate to 30 fps instead of the default 29.97 or maybe use non-drop fame setting. I am not sure which will work. How do I reset the frame rate to 30 or non-drop? Using Tiger on a G5.

    Gary,
Drop or non-drop frame affects timecode only not the actual framerate or number of frames.
I've had a quick play at this and can't re-create the problem. I've tried with a 30fps interlaced and a 30fps progressive clip.
What are you dong with your animations after working in FCE? If you are outputting to video or DVD you are going to need to work with PAL or NTSC framerates anyway.
If you are just using FCE to edit your animations and then saving to Quicktime, etc perhaps you could try the 720p30 HDV setting. Although I don't know if the 30 really means 30fps or whether it's the same deal as NTSC (i.e. 29.97)
Or prep your material for FCE. Use Quicktime Pro to output your animations to 29.97fps. If they are progressive maybe making them interlaced might help.
Since you can't do a lot to the set-ups in FCE you're best altering your animations to suit.

  • What Frame Rate does Catalyst export .SWF at?

What Frame Rate does Catalyst export .SWF at?
When I import a SWF file from Catalyst into another flash program, won't display never mind play, the error I get is that the frame rates don't match,
therefore I need to know what  frame rate it exports at?

If you have a SWF created by Catalyst, and you're using that SWF in something you're creating with Flash Builder or Flash Pro, then I think frame rate shouldn't matter. But maybe if you can give more details I could help more... Which flash program are you importing the SWF into, what commands or code are you using to do the import? Is there an error message or alert, if so what does it say? Any info you can provide will be helpful.
    Thanks

  • Can you adjust the frame rate with quicktime?

I need to slow the frame rate on an .avi file, and I can find how to do that in big chunks, but how to fine tune. Is this possible on the latest release (just downloaded it) and if not can someone tell me what I can use to change the framer ate on the .avi itself (either way is fine)
I am SO not tech savvy so please assume you are replying to an idiot but thank you very much in advance for any help.

p.s. I discovered that holding the option button and the fast forward give me this control for speeding things up, but I can't figure out how to slow it down - sorry for the missing info

  • Wrong capture frame rate

    Hi,
I'm trying to conform a movie from recapture, and I'm with troubles.
I'm capturing from HDCAM 1080i 59.94 and after capture my material should be 29.97fps. But always is different.
Sometimes is 29.95 or 28.54 well... severals differents values.
I see the speed of image is OK, I haven't drops.
But when go to conform the timecodes doesn't match.
FCP shows correct frame rate on Bin, but QT shows these variables frame rates.
Anothers programs as Autodesk Smoke and Assimilate Scratch recognize the wrong frame rate too.
I have a Mac Pro 12 core, using the latest Snow Leopard, FCP Studio 3 and QT.
For storage have a External SAS disk array with 32 TB wich has a sustainted througput of 700MB/s (fully tested and OK).
For capture I'm using a Aja Kona 3.
Actually I already saw this problem in anothers versions of FCP and anothers machines.. but I never get to fix it.
Please, someone already had this problem and fix it?
    Thanks in advance.
    Thiago Cabral

QT almost is always wrong.  It plays what it can... and with Snow Leopard, QT X is just worse.  The fact that Smoke and Scratch report the wrong frame rate is really puzzling.  Try this...use the CONFORM option in Cinema Tools to conform the footage to 29.97.  Might be just the thing needed to LOCK that frame rate still.

  • Posterize Time VS Preseve Frame Rate When nested

    Hello Every one.
When Nesting  Two Compositions with different Frame Rates, I heard Posterize Time, Is a old Effect that many people use it.  But It can cause Lots of problems.
So, Is It better Inside Composition Settings- Advanced:  To Check Preserve frame rate when nested or in render queue ?
    Thank You.

If you have to preserve the frame rate, I would just choose to preserve the frame rate. However, there are many times when you don't even need to preserve the frame rate. So, if you don't actually need to preserve it, don't.

  • I want to play video on my computer to make some analysis to frames, the problem that I face ,I can't change video frame rate using labview, but I can change frame rate to the video out of labview using some program

    HI All
I want to play video on my computer to make some analysis to it's frames, the problem that I face ,I can't change video frame rate using labview, but I can change frame rate to the video out of labview using some program .
I used IMAQ AVI Read Frame VI
for example I have avi video It's frame rate is 25 fbs ,my image processing code is very fast that can process more 25 fbs,so I want to accelerate video acquisition

    Hi abdelhady,
I looked into this further, and reading an AVI file into LabVIEW faster than its frames per second won't be possible. LabVIEW could read in frames faster than 25fps, but because it will be pulling the available frame at that point in time this would just give you duplicate frames. If you want to be able to read in frames at faster than 25fps, you would need to speed up your AVI file before reading into LabVIEW.
There's a good shipping example to show how to read in from an AVI file, "Read AVI File.vi". You'll notice that they add timing to make sure that the while loop runs at the right speed to match up with the frames per second of the file being read. This is to make sure you're not reading duplicate frames.

  • Need Help Determining Least Common Demoninator for Frame Rate, Codec, and Workflow

I need help determining the best timeline setting and Compressor workflow to integrate footage with varying frame rates and codecs that I'm currently upres'ing for a multi-camera concert performance destined for HD broadcast output. I'm assuming the network needs 29.97.
Thus far, I've been working with Apple ProRes Proxy files to create lo-res edits. Now, I've started the task of offlining and ingesting new, HD clips from the proxy references. The content originates from either Panasonic HVX200 or Panasonic GH1 cameras.
Looking at the material, it appears the cameras were not shooting with the same settings and, somehow, a PAL GH1 got into the mix. Some of the performances have the PAL GH1 and other do not.
Here's the breakdown of the varying sources. I got this info from the Log & Transfer columns.
    HVX Cameras
    Format: 1080p24
    Source Format: DVCPRO HD 1080i60
    Shooting Rate: 24
    Vid Rate: 29.97
    TC Format: Non-Drop
    GH1 NTSC
    Format: 1080i60
    Source Format: AVCHD 1080i60
    Shooting Rate: 30
    Video Rate: 29.97
    TC Format: Drop
    GH1 PAL
    Format: 1080i50
    Source Format: AVCHD 1080i50
    Shooting Rate: 25
    Video Rate: 25
    TC Format: Non-Drop
    ANOTHER GH1 NTSC
    Format: 1080p24
    Source Format: AVCHD 1080p24
    Shooting Rate: 24
    Video Rate: 23.98
    TC Format: Non-Drop

Call the TV station/network and get their spec sheet first. You need to know more than frame rate.
Once you have that, you can work backwards to arrive at a workflow.
As a general priniciple, you'll get a more seamless translation of format when you add frames rather than removing them. (eg 24p to 27.97 rather than 29.97 to 24p)
At least all the material starts out in the 1080 world.
Do all your conversions before you start editing. (I'd use ProRes or ProRes LT for the editing codec).
Budget a bunch of time to sync the material or figure out a quick cutting style that minimizes sync drift.
    What a nightmare.

  • Back to school--frame rate education

    Hello there,
Would someone explain the difference in frame rate output when exporting a project from iMovie 11?
I see the choices for 30, 24, and 60 and one of my camcorders can record at 60fps but what are the differences and is there a quality benefit to one over the other?
    thanks
    Marc

First of all, you will typically see frame rates of 24, 25, 50 and 60. This is partly related to the TV video standards in North America vs. Europe and elsewhere. North America uses 30 and 60 frames as the standards.
They frame rates you see may be follwed with the "i" or "p" designations. "i" stands for interlace and "p" for progressive. Interlace "paints" the image on the display or screen on evey other line and alternates every other frame. For example, 60i paints the lines 60 times per second, but each frame is composed of bands that are only every other line. The image is "striped", if you will. The eye does not notice, because it happens so fast - 60 times a second. On the otherhand, 60p paints the full image 60 times per second. As you can imagine, the more lines of information and the higher the frame rate, the more "data information" that must be processed and displayed in a given amount of time. With so much date to process, 60p video taxes Mac hardware to the max. But 60p is worth it, if you can get it to play. The 60p image is so much more life-like.
HD Camcorders sold the last year or so typically record 1920 x 1080 at 30p or 60i. That is 30 frames progressive or 60 frames interlace. Many feel the 30p views better than 60i on an HDTV. Several camcorders in the $800-1000 dollar range sold today and even some less expensive camcorders record at 60p. This is a huge step up in quality - when viewed on an HDTV capable of displaying the video - and most are these days.
As far as real world image quality, when I play 1920 x 1080 HD video at 60p directly from my camcorder to my HDTV, the image quality is superb. Any action or anything moving on screen is displayed clearly without the slightest blur or streaks. Unfortunately, my 2007 vintage macs cannot keep up with this level of video quality. When I upload video from my camcorder to my Mac and try to play 1920 x 1080 60p HD content, the video stutters and freezes. I must convert my camcorder's video content to a lower frame rate such as 30p to make it playable on my Mac. I use free programs such as Handbrake to convert, but the conversion to 30p degrades image quality noticeably. The processor in my camcorder is optimized for high quality 60p video and outperforms my Mac by leaps and bounds. However, it is impractical to keep all my videos on my camcorder.
In the last couple of months, new Macs with i7 Quad Core processors and separate, dedicated graphics processors have caught up with today's camcorders and can now play and edit state of the art home video content.
Bottom line on frame rates. Record, edit and play at as high a frame rate as your equipment allows. This is especially important in recording anything with a lot of action, like sports. Given the choice between i and p, choose the p or progressive settings when recording. To future proof, my recorded video, I like to record at 60p and then convert to 30p. My camcorder would let me record at 30p or 60i (which would save me a time consuming conversion step), but instead, I go ahead and use 60p to preserve my options in the future. I save the 60p files and when I upgrade my Mac some day, I will be able to play the 60p video and enjoy the higher quality it affords.
