Need some help before buying my first Mac... please

Hi
Before I start I have searched for the answers via Google but I'm still getting maybe type results.
Can OSX automatically map drives to a Windows server/NAS when the user logs in?
Can OSX maintain the shares when users fast switch between accounts on the same iMac?
Will OSX reconnect to the mapped drive when coming out of sleep/suspend mode?
I'm not talking AD (Active Directory) just Windows Work Group authentication.
For me this could be a deal breaker if OSX can't do the above.

We have cifs file servers at work, I have no problem connecting to them. To make an automatic connection at login, first time you connect, check the "remember password" checkbox and then drag the mounted server icon into your login items in System Preferences > Accounts > your account. Personally, I like dragging the connected share icon onto the dock, then I have a single-click user/password-less dynamic mount as needed, when needed, rather than always autoconnecting at login whether I need it or not.

seems to -- I slept my computer when I had a cifs drive mounted -- upon awakening, it was like my cifs mount never left.
I'm not talking AD (Active Directory) just Windows Work Group authentication.
I don't know much about that, my work is a Windoze World and I don't even know if I have to worry about that -- they haven't been by to integrate me into AD, yet, though, although they keep threatening to do so, if they ever get all their other Windows network problems fixed. http://ifelix.net/tech might have some info that might be helpful to you insofar as file sharing between other Windows clients and printing to Windows print servers. Not for the latest OSs of each though, but some of the older OS-pairings are pretty well documented there.

If you mean you're trying to update your ios go to settings/general/software update. then you should see the latest ios just tap it and it will automatically update your ipod. If you're trying to restore your ipod (as it's not quite clear in your query) try doing it through itunes instead of on the device itself

Need some help with security sandbox stuff asap please

hey guys... so im trying to do a swfLoader call to a swf on a server from my actionscript on my local machine, when i do that i get the security sandbox violation error.... i tried adding a crossdomain.xml file to the server that has the following code in it

Need some info before buying a 8800 GT for 1st gen Mac Pro.

Ok, I'm thinking about buying a 8800 GT for my Quad Core 2.66 but, I have a few questions.
1. Will it run under Windows XP 64-Bit
2. I want it for the pro apps (Final Cut Studio 2) but i've been hearing other video cards run those progs better. Is that true? if so which card should I get.

You will need to get the requisite drivers from NVidia to install in Windows. If you do some searching you will find numerous discussions about the 8800 GT and its not too spectacular performance with Pro Apps. You can also find reviews at Bare Feats.

I need some help setting up a WiFi printer please

Firstly, apologies for the long post but I’m really struggling with this one.
I live in France and am trying to get wifi printing working on a friend’s Intel iMac (OSX Tiger 10.4.11) connected to a Lexmark X4875 printer. She’s connecting to the internet via Airport using a Livebox router, no problems. I’ve set up the printer to work wifi and that all 'appears' to be successful with the wifi light going to green as it should. I’ve also ‘associated’ the printer with the router by pressing the association button on the Livebox at the time of set-up and the printer is registered with the Livebox with correct MAC id.
So far everything looks like it should work until I go ‘Add Printer’ and the wifi printer is never seen (no problems if connected via USB). I’ve reset the printer erasing all print settings and starting again, done numerous restarts of all devices and still no go.
I should add that I have set up many wifi printers previously and even had this one working previously for over a year - it’s just that she had to get a new Livebox recently and now I can’t get it to work.
I realise that not everybody will be familiar with the Livebox although they are common anywhere Orange operates as an ISP but I’m hoping that someone will have some nugget of information that will help me get this sorted.

Need some help scripting a specific menu animation, please

I have this Actioscript 2 file here (see attached).
I have the animation performing ok in the file, but I am having trouble getting the movie clip to play on mouseover. I could really use some advice on this... I've been through a number of tutorials, but cannot get this file to play nice.
On mouseover, the menu should animate down (play the clip). This brings up another question, however... How do I get the menu to receed (animate up) when the cursor leaves the button region?

They will need to be workable links eventually - right now, the text is not even correct.
The buttons are created, but they are not set up to link yet - I had wanted to see if I could get the mouseover on and off working first.

Need Some Help with Internet Explorer...Please

I have one site that I use for work that I am not able to get on from home because I am Mac based.
It says I can only recognizes Internet Explorer.
Is there a way around this that doesn't involve me having to purchase Windows? It's the only site I need if I work from home, if I have to buy something, ok, but would rather see if there is another way.

Internet Explorer is part of the Windows Operating System. In order to get Internet Explorer you must install Windows either using Bootcamp Assistant or using a Virtual Machine like Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox.

Alright I give! I need some help with groups/busses and more please..

Well, its now been a few weeks of my off and on testing with my new Logic Rig, I have every plug I can transfer over to UB that I can and now am trying to get deeper into things.
First I struggled with learning the environment (I still dont get it fully) but now I am really confused about group and fx tracks.
- Am I missing something or is everything just a buss turned into a group? This also included creating an FX track?
If this is the case then its not nearly as complex as I think it is but I cant figure certain things out with the way logic handles naming in regards to its busses.
Lets say I want to create a sidechain group. I take an audio track change it to represent buss (1), I then rename buss 1 to SC-GROUP, now any window that I drop down to find the newly names SC-GROUP always remains named as buss (1). This even happens when I rename the buss direct from the audio environment.
I must be missing something, whats been confusing the heck out of me is that no matter how I try and name things they always remain their original names in any menues as the example of the buss (1), so how do I rename these channels so I can clearly know exactly where I am routing audio?
So lets summarise where I am lost so far hehe.
1. Are groups really just empty busses renamed to act as a group?
2. How can I rename a buss/group and be able to see the renamed channel in the menues.
and for the 3rd new question of sorts...
3. FX Sends, again is this just a buss that has an AU inserted into its channel and then rout the insert of an additional audio channel to the buss with the FX inserted?
and now my last uestion of the day if I have not confused you to death so far
Why is it that when I add a AU lets say battery as instrument 1, when I add another in the window and I rerout an instrum,ent track the next AU shows up at the bottom of the list instead of inst. 2?
If I am not explaining myself clearly enough for any of my examples let me know so I can try to better represent my questions. I am still so new to Logic and still have yet to get the bulk of the simple operations down just yet..

So if I understand right, a sub buss is nothing more than a routing the output of a few channels to a buss to control a few aspects like I had mentioned compressing an entire group of tracks EG: a drum buss (in this situation a drum sub buss?).
So I will have to reffer to the manual again to read the details on an actual group since it does seem there is a difference EG: the group can actually manipulate the faders of channels routed to the group?
FX busses seem to be just that, slap an FX info either and AUX channel or a buss and then set the insert of that AUX or buss desired.
The reason I asked about naming is that lets say I have 6 effects tracks I wish to use lets say as an example AUX1=Short Delay, AUX2=Long Filter Delay, AUX3=Slap Verb, AUX4=Long Verb and so forth.
When I go to actually use these inserts I need to assume I know exactly what AUX I assigned each effect to, if I could simply rename this AUX track to refference the effect it would make so much more sense then trying to remember what AUX5 was.
In regards to my last question here is a bit more of a detailed explanation, please bare with me as I am not in front of my computer.
1. I add battery into Audio Instrument-1
2. I then configure my environemt to use my AUXs I already have inplace for audio routing.
3. I then edit the Audio window create the midi for a new multi-instrument.
4. I come back to the main arrange window and hold-click on the next available audio-instrument and in the instrument window battery will be instrument 1 out of how ever many blanks apear EG:25+
5. Now I go to add lets say Stylus RMX into the next available mutli audio instrument. I then repeat steps 2,3,4.
Now when I get to step 4 this time instead of audio instrument 2 from the lint being Stylus it shows up as the last possible instrument in the drop list that appears under audio instrument from hold-click on the audio-instrument track.
Its just odd, it should be instrument 2, but instead it shows up as the last possible choice.
Maybe I am doing something wrong, even sometimes when I grab on of batteries midi tracks and create next object I will get a random audio track in there out of no where, or maybe its just a bug with battery.
Any ideas? If I still am not describing this right, I will post a step by step this eve of exactly the steps I am taking.

Need some help with Format!!! Please Help

I am all done with editing a wedding and just discovered that half of my project in the beginning is squished. I have black bars on the left and right sides. Basically FCP is not utilizing the extra sceen space on my files. The original footage is normal 3X4 and was captured as such (720X480 DV).
I do not understand why half of my project appears fine and fills the screen, but the first half has been squished and not filling the prject windows fully.
I am using a MacBook Pro, and FC 5.0. Footage was shot in Mini DV on a Sony.

Thanks guys for the help. I don't think it was like this while I was editing. That is why I didn't notice it earlier. I let someone watch part of it and it could be that they hit something that changed it.
I found that the aspect ratio was on 12.5 and not O. When I put it to 0 it filled the screen much more, but not completely. But it should be enough to bring the image back to a normal size.
The question is now, is there a way to apply an aspect ratio change of 0 to 100 clips? When I select them all and change it, it only applies to the first clip. It is going to take a long long time to change all of them.

I need some help with AVI and IDX files please.

Hello there,
I've just been given a hard drive with a load of media on it that I need to work with in FCP.
There's a folder with many .AVI clips, and each clip has an accompanying directory file with the extension .IDX
The format of the AVI files is DV, 720x576, 48kHz.
For the life of me, I can't get FCP to accept the media. Log and Transfer won't accept them, and if i bring in the AVI files in on their own using File>Import>Files... I get a message saying:
Media Performance Warning
It is highly recommended that you either recapture the media or use the Media manager to create new copies of the files to improve their performance for multi-stream playback.
I can click 'OK' for this message and the media will appear in the browser, but If I place one of these AVI files on a new conformed sequence, the audio needs rendering. (Sequence settings correspond to media settings)
I tried just changing the wrapper from AVI to MOV, thinking I could fool FCP into accepting them, but I get the same rejection.
I thought the audio and video signals might be muxed, so I tried MPEG Streamclip to sort that out, but even MPEG Streamclip doesn't accept the media, saying : File open error: Can't find video or audio tracks.
Could anybody advise me on how to get the most out of these media files please?

yes. I tried transcoding in QT, but they still come in with the same audio rendering required. I'm a bit loath to convert them all though, as there are 1400 clips.
It's not a huge problem, as they do play in FCP, but I'd like to sort out the audio rendering. I don't understand why it needs rendering as the media and sequence audio settings match, and it's not some weird format or anything, it's bog standard 48kHz stereo.

I need some help with my new podcast. Please!

I've just set up a new podcast and it's online on itunes. The xml file is hosted on my website. Can i edit the text within this file...i.e. if there is a spelling mistake...ping this...and itunes will update it? Cos i tried doing that but no changes were made...any ideas?
Also, to generate my xml file, i used this website

However i noticed that feedburner allows you to collate statistics on subscribers and podcast downloads....how can i switch to feedburner? i find this all so confusing. does anyone know what im talking about?

From looking at their site, Podblaster creates the feed file from the data you give it: so it's no good you editing the feed file yourself as Podblaster will over-write it the next time you add an episode. Any changes you make to data or episode in Podblaster will cause an amended version of the feed file to be uploaded and this will eventually be reflected in the itunes Store; it usually takes 1-2 days, occasionally longer, for new episodes to appear in the Store, and it's possible that minor amendments to the texts won't show until you upload a new episode.
To take advantage of Feedburner's statistics facilities you need to submit the feed to Feedburner, and then submit the feed it generates to the iTunes Store. This will involve you either using the procedure detailed here (which involves adding a special tag to the feed - something you may well not be able to do) or submitting this feed as a new podcast to the Store (which will necessitate making a small change to the name).
If you have any further queries please post both the URL of your feed and of the iTunes Store page (please include the http:// in both cases), without which it's possible only to give very general answers.

Need some help on tagging an XML placeholder please

I'm trying to get my image line to have a paragraph style of 'img_stem' attached to the return. But while my placeholder does show that I do have that para style, when I import the xml, the para changes to the style 'Stem_Text.' Can anyone tell me what I may be doing wrong here? The 1st picture shows the placeholder text. The 2nd picture shows the xml after importing.

The first image I use is a JPG 72dpi 1500px x1500px and I want to downsize it to 600x600px same res, but it keeps pixelating, this has never happened before. Any suggestions, thoughts?

I wouldn't say pixelated; more like blurry.
Like ConnectedCreative said, what steps are you using? Are you using "bicubic sharper" when resizing down?
