Need some input for the best laser printer to use on a Mac Pro

I have a Mac Pro and am now, a year later, looking for a laser printer. I do not want an ink jet as I do not print enough paper and the jets tend to clog up and the ink dry out, hence the laser.
I have looked at several different ones, and read the online reviews. Many of them have problems with the drivers for a Mac. I ordered an HP Laserjet P1006 (but have not actually bought it yet) since it was on sale.
Anyone have experience with this printer? What worked best for you - and by this I mean what printer will work out of the box without having to go online and download drivers, etc.?
Thanks for your help.

You might do better using the review information from CNET.com or Macworld.com. I find examining both user reviews and editor choices from the former quite helpful when buying new equipment.
Personally, I've used HP printers in the past but that's some time back. I have an older HP PhotoSmart printer that has been fine. I also have a Lexmark 510n that I'm happy with, but it's been replaced by a newer model I believe. Works quite well and was OS X compatible out of the box after downloading the driver. Apple has since released a whole new pack of Lexmark drivers for OS X. I also have an old TekTronix laser printer that was quite good in its day. Both laser printers are color.
I tend to avoid the low-end printers. Cheap is cheap. If there's a $100 laser printer and a $500 one I'd go with the $500 model all things being equal. They generally cost more because they are better built and have better features. I also would prefer models with Ethernet support. I would prefer this to any USB printer or wireless printer - more likely to be less trouble and it isn't necessary to share an Ethernet printer if you have more than one computer on your network.

What is the best wireless printer to use with an IPad Air and IPhone that will print both text and photos?  Also, is the separate keyboard available for the IPad Air, yet?

Best is relative. Different people like different things. I have an epson that I like. I'd look through a site like Best Buy and compare reviews for Air Print enabled printers.
as to the keyboard, I know Zagg has one and I think there are other manufacturers that have keyboards for the Air. As far as I know, pretty much any bluetooth keyboard will work, but if you want a case then you'd need to get a specific one.

The standard default format they ship with works well for most file types; so if
you aren't moving OS X or Mac app specific files around on a USB flash drive,
the original format should be fine. Oh, you can use Disk Utility to attempt to do
a repair; but in some cases you may have to reformat them, etc.

  • Wats the best msn messenger to use on your mac ?

whats the best msn messenger to use on the mac + how do you use ichat ??? iv no idea how that works !!! never got a aol account or what ever !! only have msn + gmail

I tried a few different ones, adium was alright, but i prefer just the regular msn for mac. It was weird when I first switched over, but now I like it better than msn for windows. It has a few less options, but nothing is missing that I frequently used. The best messenger for you probably depends on what features you want to have.

  • Need some help with the best coding approach

Here is my scenario.  I need to pull data from AFRU within a certain date range.  Once I have this data i need to look at the confirmation number and counter.  If the confirmation has more than one entry in the table i need to take the value of field ISOM1 associated with counter 2 and move it into the previous record's ISOM1 field.  the reason is the value calculates the set up time form counter 1 to 2 but it is placed in counter 2.
I was thinking of a select from AFRU into an internal table for the date range.  Then I would sort descending and keep looping until my confirmation changes.  Not sure how to accomplish this however in code.

Here is the code i put together.  it doens't like my read or loop.
    tables: afru.
DATA: Ty_afru TYPE standard TABLE OF afru with header line,
WA_AFRU TYPE TABLE OF afru with header line.
         data: wa_diff_time like afru-ISM01,
               wa_conf like afru-RUECK,
               wa_counter like afru-rmzhl.
Select * from afru into table ty_afru
         where ERSDA >  '01/01/2005'.
         sort ty_afru descending.
        read table tY_afru
        index 1.
         move ty_afru-ISM02 TO WA_DIFF_TIME.
         move ty_afru-rueck to wa_conf.
         LOOP AT tY_afru.
              wa_counter = ty_afru-RMZHL.
             if  rueck = ty_afru-rueck  and
              RMZHL = yy_afru-RMZHl.
              ty_afru-ISM02 = 0.
              elseif.
              ty_afru-rueck = rueck and
                  ty_afru-RMZHL = RMZHL - 1.
            ty_afru-ISM02 = WA_DIFF_TIME.
    move ty_afru-rueck to wa_conf.
           endif.
          wa_counter = ty_afru-RMZHL - 1.
         ENDLOOP.
    endcase.

  • I need advice on a quality color-laser printer to work with my Mac Book Pro and my wife's Mac Book

    Hi:
I have a Mac Book Pro and my wife a Mac Book, both with Intel Chips.
I'm running OS 10.7.5 while she is running 10.6.8.
Our budget is between $200 and $400,
We would like the following features:
    1. Wireless printing over a linksys router home network. It would be very nice to have the printer in a central location without having to have it USB'd directly into the router.  Our router has a fixed location in the house and the printer will be located elsewhere in the house.
    2. Reasonably fast to fast printing (pages /minute)
    3. Color and black/white printing if the cost isn't too much higher to get color printing capability.
    4. AirPrint from iphone 5, if possible.
    5.  High quality photo printing is not a requirement......looking more for high quality document printing (Word, pdf's, etc) and printing of material from the web.
    Thanks in advance for advice!
    Michael

  • What is the best way to set up my new Mac Pro?

Not wanting to screw up in a process I've not done with a brand new machine before, I'm looking for feedback on my plan for setting my new Mac Pro next week...
    The physical plan is this:
For RAM, I have four 2GB SDRAM's plus the supplied six 1GB modules. My plan here is to install the 2GB rams into the first four slots and install four of the 1GB modules into the remaining four slots for a total of 12GB's.
When the cost for 4GB modules gets down to reasonable, I'll buy four of them and bump the current rams down the line which will then give me a total of 24 gigs where I'll stay.
For my hard drives, I'm installing a 160GB Intel X25-M into the first drive bay
    http://www.intel.com/design/flash/nand/mainstream/index.htm
using one of MaxUpgrades' 'MaxConnects' kits. I will use this drive for the operating system software and my applications and their libraries.
Next, into the remaining three drive bays, I am installing three 300GB WD Velociraptors. Mine are the pre-'backplane ready' versions:
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?DriveID=459
so I have bought these sleds for them...
    http://www.maxupgrades.com/istore/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_i d=180
I own one of Sonnet's Tempo SATA E4P cards
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposatae4p.html
which, thanks to this forum, I now understand, with the correct firmware installed, function well so I will install it and be able to establish hardware RAID. I will create a RAID 0 set with the three Velociraptors and use it to store all of my data files.
Backup will happen on a 1TB WD 'Caviar Black' external drive connected through one of the Sonnet card's external eSATA ports and using the OS 'Time Machine' software.
And that's the physical plan. My question is about setting things up. The physical installation part is straight forward and I don't expect any difficulties but I'm wondering what is the best way to install the operating system.
Do I take a first step keeping the supplied hard drive installed, install the solid state drive into the next drive bay and then transfer the contents from the supplied drive onto the SSD or do I do the complete physical installation process and do a 'C' drive start up and install the OS that way?
And, do you have any tips/suggestions on setting up the RAID 0 set?
thanks for the help. I want to do this right.
    JQ

oh mighty Hatter, I knew you'd have helpful guidance to offer! And thank you. You've confirmed my anxieties about the Sonnet card; kind of a 'too much, too quickly' sort of thing. And it's not that Sonnet's not a good company. Just everything to do with new technologies and the growth curve we all, manufacturers and users, go through when they come out. And, for sure, the new Mac Pro's are new technology; the single biggest forward leap in Apple's top-of-the-line machines for some time far as I can tell. Just reading at Intel's website about the Nehalem's is a joy!
So, I will proceed now with everything except for the controller card, leaving that 'til later. In the meantime, I think I'll just happily run with the four hard drives all running independently. No software RAID. I know just those, the SSD boot drive plus Velociraptor trio's going inside of a 2.66ghz 8-core Nehalem Mac Pro is going to be a working pleasure. Heck, this way, I'll get settled in and used to the machine's speed, have a great time doing so and then, in however many months, I can jump into spending another chunk of money on an excellent RAID card, RAID card's dear Barefeats will have tested and reviewed for us, set up my RAID 0 set and head of to those new races watching my computer leap for joy! Could be that, by then, the cost of Intel 160GB X25-M's will have dropped enough that I can afford to go for a second and have a two SSD RAID 0 boot drive... Yummy!
Thanks for the help. Like I say, I knew there was useful guidance hanging on some limb within your personal kit, (otherwise referred to as your mind)!
Interesting to read about the problems people have had with Sonnet's 2.17 update in PPC's... In this computer, my PowerMac G5 dual 2.7ghz, I have a Sonnet 'Tempo Sata X4P' controller card. I downloaded and installed 2.17 and got the same troubles; no cut, no paste, no 'drag and drop' etc. It was miserable.
Mine, fortunately, magically corrected after running the 'permissions verify and correct' process in Disc Utility and, after a restart, all was back to almost normal but for one exception; the Sonnet card was no longer present or functioning including the four eSATA ports out the back. (I ran Tech Tools Pro 5's repair suites first but, and who knows why, it didn't correct the problem...) This one was absolutely in the 'who knows what the f_'s going on and why it disappeared but did' class.
Oh, the other remnant is that, when the computer goes into sleep, after about five minutes, the fans rev up, and up, and the computer's frozen; only access is to do a forced shutdown pressing and holding the power button, so I've had to adopt a 'shut down whenever leaving it for more than fifteen minutes' approach to this dear friend. Once I've fully moved into and established my new one (which should arrive today, by the way... Yippeee!!! Can't wait!), I'll do a complete restoration on this one including taking out the Sonnet card. Usually, I sell my old Pro's but, this time, I'm going to keep this one as a back up and just general second computer for times I might need it. It has been such a great and dependable machine. Keeping it seems the right thing to do.
thanks Hatter. I'll let you know how things go, including what happens with the SSD. I don't have speed test software so I won't be able to track it's performance like that guy in the post you gave me did...

  • What's the best external drive to use with Final Cut Pro?

I'm looking for a drive to mainly back up my final cut pro work, possibly do a little editing on, what's best? I have a G5 desktop.

    Congratulations on your graduation.
On the hope that during your college career you learned how to do original research, you could show some clear initiative and read through those threads my link will reveal. From the drives discussed you might find common elements (praise or conndemnation) that show up after reading dozens of threads. Of the ones that get consistently good reviews by serious users, you can then go the website of the manufacturer and figure out if they fit your budget.
All this can be done in the time of you waiting around for a few people to chip into this thread.
    Good luck.

  • I need some input from the iphone community with regards to an App that I'm looking for.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it. If I'm posting in the wrong place, I apologize.
Many times I take pictures of schedules, reciepts, or itinerary and send it via mms or e-mail to my daughter @college. Often I'd like to "highlight" specific info on the picture, but the apps that let me do this only offer this feature on a PDF file. (I already have goodreader) I have the app Labelbox which would be great in this instance, (I can place labels anywhere on a photo) however, none of the labels they provide are transparent/flourescent. Drawing apps are messy and don't provide the kind of coverage I need for neat highlighting of specific words or sentences. In short, does anyone know of an app that will let me place transparent labels on specific places on a photo? (Being able to change the width or length would also be an added bonus)
    TIA

Yes. However, some folks like to use the Combo OS updates directly from Apple's Download site rather than going through Software Update.
BTW: Have you checked the places where you keep your music CDs if you have any?
If you are using a computer desk, the insall discs should always be kept in a safe place not to far from your computer or at least in a place where all your other computer stuff is.
All of my CDs relating to my computers are kept in a CD/DVD binder inside my computer desk drawer.
