Need Step-by-Step Instructions for second hard drive just installed

Hi. I am almost out of space on the hard drive that came with my G4 (I am using 114.49 of the 120 with Tiger) so I bought and installed in the second bay a 300 gb Maxtor. That' s all I have done so far. It shows up in the system profile and as a drive in the disk utility although when I restart the computer the message "the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer!" I assume this is because it is empty, not formatted or anything.
I have an external bootable clone (firewire) of my original hard drive as back up.
What I would like to do is use the original install/restore disks that came with it, the one with classic support as well, and install it on the new 300 drive. Then I would like to bring it up to date with Tiger and use my back up external drive to make the new 300 gb drive the main one I use for this computer. As for the other 120 gb one, the original one, could I then erase it and install Leopard on it so I can get to know that OS system over time?
Do I need to partition the new drive to do any of this?
What do I do and in what order? My head is spinning over this and I am frozen at this point...
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi-
First thing you need to do is to format the drive with Disk Utility. In Disk Utility/Erase, select your drive, select Mac OS Extended-Journaled, name your drive, select "Install OS 9 drivers" and click erase. That's all. Now it's ready to use.
For a 300GB drive I see no need to partition.
You can use your original install discs to install your OS, and then reinstall all your applications, and then transfer all your files, or, you could use a cloning utility such as SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner (I use and recommend SuperDuper!) and clone your current hard drive to your new hard drive.
A clone is an exact, bootable duplicate of a source drive, and it will give you everything that you are used to , except you will have it on your new, larger drive.
After an OS has been installed (clone or new install) on the new drive, in System Preferences/Startup Disk, select the new drive as Startup volume, and restart.
After you are satisfied that all things are as they should be on the new drive, the smaller drive can be erased and have Leopard installed on it, as you suggest.

  • No power supply cable for second hard drive

Hard drive in PC is crashing mechanically.  Want to ghost a second hard drive before first drive crashes completely.   Bought duplicate of existing hard drive, but there is no power supply cable/connector for it.  Have SATA plug, but cannot power up second hard drive.  What do I do?

    LB1815, welcome to the forum.
If I understand your problem correctly, this is the connector that you need.  It converts a single SATA power cable to two connectors.  This allows you to connect two drives with on cable.  There are many other brands available on Newegg.  This is just one example.

  • Need Win 7 recovery discs for new hard drive

I am not sure which Windows 7 Operating system my laptop had, but I need the recovery discs to put Windows 7 back on my HP dv6-6167cl notebook.
My original issue was that my notebook was unable to restore or anything on its own.  After calling HP support and performing a guided diagnostics test, it was determined that my hard drive was bad.  I purchased a new hard drive and replaced it, but need to get Windows 7 back on it.
    Thanks!

Re: link posted by RealBlackStuff - that article from 2006 is not talking about the drives with built-in full-disk encryption that are now an option on some thinkpads.
Here's an article about the drives from when Hitachi (and Seagate) launched them just a few months ago:
    http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/08/30/35TC-drive-encryption_1.html
Unfortunately, it doesn't provide as many details on the devices as I would like but it's a decent overview. (I still wish Lenovo would better document how to use the device and exactly what it protects against.)

How do I sync my new ipad mini with my old ipad 2, without losing any apps or data in notes?  I need step by step instructions for first-time sync with ipad mini.  Thanks.

If you synced it many times, you have to have a backup. It's just a question of how old that backup is now. When did you last sync?
First of all launch iTunes on your computer and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices. Do you see any backups for you iPad in that window? If so, how new is the newest backup? That will be the backup that you will want to use. But remember that if you use that backup and it is one month old, you can only restore from that date back in time. Anything that you did on the iPad in the past month will not be in that backup.
Turn on the new iPad Minin and start activating OTA via WiFi. You will get to a certain point in the process where you will be given the choice to Set up as new, Restore from iCloud - or Restore from iTunes. You will want to select Restore from iTunes.
That is the short and sweet version. There are step by step instructions in this article. This applies to the mini as well as the iPad 4 or the iPad 3 for that matter.

  • Need step by step instructions for wireless security setup on my westell modem

I tried setting up security shortly after getting the modem, but I had trouble getting vista laptop to work with the security settings. I don't feel like figuring this all out. • Step by Step Instructions for Installing Self Signed Certificate using Certificate Modification Tool

I am looking for some step by step instructions for installing the self signed certificate from my Microsoft SBS 2003 server on a Treo 755p and 750p.  In particular I need some help with the form of the actual certificate and how to use the Certificate Modification tool.
Some questions I have are as follows:
    1. When I install the certificate on a Windows Mobile device I used an exported version of the certificate.  This export is done using the DER x.509 format.  Is that the same form I’ll need for the Palm?  Do I need some other form? Can/should I just use sbscert.cer file that is generated when SBS is configured?
    2. Does the self signed cert need to be installed on the computer being used to update the Palm or do we just need to be able to access the appropriate .CER file?
    3. There are three things included in the PalmCertificatesTool.zip file:
                                    Trusted CAs (folder)
                                    Cert2pdb.exe
                                    PalmCertificates.exe
How do I use these tools?
    4. It looks like the PalmCertificates.exe file opens an interface that will allow me to browse to the desired .CER file.  Then I suppose I use the < Generate PDB > to create something that needs to then be uploaded to the Palm device?  Not having any real experience with a Palm device how do I upload and install this file?
    5. Once uploaded do I do something on the device to install it?
If there is some white paper that provides step by step instructions on doing this that would be great.
    Thanks,
    Walt Bell

    Thanks for that.
I have one question after reading the article 43375:
The article has you "Turn of AutoSync" and then "Reset the device".  It then indicates the device should be left idle.
The next step relates to running the PalmCertificates.exe, navigate to the certificate file and add it and then run the < Generate PDB > button.  Should the device be connected to the computer during this process? If so, at what point after the reset do you connect it to the computer?
    Thanks!

  • Need to add a second hard drive. Which model?

    Hello,
I would like to add a second hard drive to my G3. My current 12 Gig ATA/133 hard drive is not sufficient anymore for my projects. I would like to choose a SATA hard drive and I need some help with the selection of a model. I am choosing SATA because I may eventually move it to a G5 computer later.
Could someone please suggest a hard drive model? I am looking for a fast drive and preferably one that is quiet too. I will be adding a SATA controller card (FirmTek SeriTek/1S2) available from www.firmtek.com/seritek in order to add this second drive.
My main programs I use are the Adobe Creative Suite Programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator and InDesign as well as Macromedia Dreamweaver. The average file size on my computer varies - I have many small files on my computer as well as some very large photoshop files. The OS, applications and data will all reside on this new drive and I will no longer use the 12 Gig drive at all.
I have read about some new hard drive features such as NCQ
Is NCQ a feature I should look for?
Most hard drives have a cache/buffer that is 8 MB or 16MB. Is 16 MB a good feature to look for or could 8MB be considered large enough for a buffer?
I will choose an RPM that is at least 7200. I think most hard drives today are 7200 anyways.
I am looking for a capacity of 160 GIGs or maybe 250 - depending on the cost.
Here are the ones I have considered already listed in order of my current preference:
    Maxtor MaXLine III
    DiamondMax 10
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.8
    Hitachi 7K250
    Deskstar T7K250
Does anyone have any recommendations for me either in this list or perhaps another model?
    Thank you,
    Mike
(I considered Maxtor DiamondMax 11 but it might me more than I need. It is the new line of Maxtors and I would rather pay less for a drive that is sufficient.)

    Hi Hatter:
OK here's my plan. I am sort of a chicken and like to do things in small and easy steps.
I have freed up 5 Gigs on the internal hard drive by moving some data off to an external drive, but leaving all my applications where they are.
That gets me out of trouble for now. Next I am buying the WD Caviar $70 640GB drive that you suggested and will put it in bay two.
When it's up and running I will clone the old drive over to my new drive, so that I can start the Mac from my new humungeous drive.
At this point I will install the dinky old drive in an FW case for safe keeping, I guess and buy another 650 gig drive for the now vacant bay.
Maybe some time down the line, I'll install the new bays, but I have a feeling that by that time APple will be offering a new Mac Gwhiz that I will be unable to refuse.
    Does this all sound feasible?
Thanks for all your help and I will keep you posted.
    Dan

  • Can anyone recommend a second hard drive for my PowerPC G5

    Hi,
Sorry if this question has been asked before but I need the answer in a hurry.
I need to fit a second hard drive into my PowerPC G5 - and I have never done this before. I phoned a company to buy a drive and they said that there can be compatibility problems with certian drives and Macs. A friend at work also confirmed this and pointed me to the site www.xlr8yourmac.com which has a database of drives and their associated problems.
Unfortunately I don't have time to digest all of the info. I am letting a friend use my Mac for a project that they are working on and they need the space urgently. They are working to a strict deadline.
So basically what I would like to know is if anyone can recommend a drive that I can fit without it causing any problems. I need a high quality, fast and very quiet drive for audio and video production. The drive should be 250GB, 7200RPM, 16MB cache. The Mac support pages say it must be a serial ATA drive but I have no idea if you can use ATAII or ATA300 (or any other number???).
Also - as I have never done this before - I have heard 'jumpers' mentioned - will I need to set the jumpers to a particular configuration?
    Thanks in advance, Byron.
