Need suggestion on locking down student imacs

Hello, I just inherited a handful of computer labs. 8 imacs each spread out between 5 schools. 3 labs have internet access and 2 labs do not. Since I'm a complete noob when it comes to Mac OS Security what would someone recommend as my first step to locking down the computers. The students have tons of shortcuts on the desktop,downloaded mp3's, movies, myspace, facebook etc..It's a mess. Is there any 3rd party software that can manage desktops or can Mac OS do it all?
Thanks

Oh another Internet one I forgot...

For even more control you can do Get Infos from the finder on the files/folders and change permissions so they can't write, only read, or no access.

  • Need suggestion regarding drop down...

    hi ,
    i have a dropdown list having some values.I wana compare the length of the values of dropdown list to null.
    i tried this
    for (var i=0 ; i<=DropDownList1.length;i++);
    var s = DropDownList1.getDispalyItem(i);
    if(s.length ==null)xfa.host.messageBox("the length of the selected value is null");
    else xfa.host.messageBox(" Not NULL\n in this case i have written a piece of code to execute");
    thing is i am using Live Cycle Designer ES but that length function is not giving the length of the drop down list...
    Please suggetst any idea what to do ?????
    Thanks in advance.....

    The length function works fine you have a typo
    incorrect var s = DropDownList1.getDispalyItem(i);
    correct var s = DropDownList1.getDisplayItem(i);

  • Need suggestions in developing a Student atendence system.

    I want to develop an application for student attendance, If the student is absent for that day the name of the student is selected from that class and the respective parent has to get a message to his/her mobile that their child is absent.
    I want to know what kind of language i have to use for front end in order to connect with database and work properly.

    My day job is Oracle and evenings I develop websites to earn a bit extra.
    You can do this with Oracle but I would develop such an application in Wordpress.
    It is free and has extensive free plugins from their website, pretty straight forward to learn, especially if you have ever developed using Oracle Forms. If you have Windows install WAMP, Linux LAMP, then download and install Wordpress, or purchase a low cost basic cloud package e.g. GoDaddy, that installs it all for you and work off the cloud.
    You should be able to find a plugin that does the Pupil registration but I strongly recommend that you purchase a plugin called WP Twilio to get the SMS messages sent to a parents mobile.
    As for the front end, you choose the theme you want and all the plugins fit in, it generates HTML and you view it via your web browser, also provides the option of letting you give access to the parents via the website if you desire, will require the purchase of a domain.
    Hope that helps.

  • Keeping IMac's locked down in a computer lab

    For those who have lab experience what type of devices or locks are used to keep IMac's from theft in computer labs? I was curious as to what other people use or recommend in this area.

    All 3 of my labs are alarmed and supervised at all times so no I've never seen anyone try to take one that's been locked down. Had an LCD stolen once out of an office but it had not been secured. The cables can be cut but it's not as easy as it looks. In IT once in a while someone would need to relocate or surplus a computer that was locked down and no one had the key. I would go and cut the cable with bolt cutters but it usually took a few passes. If you see someone walking around with a set of bolt cutters in their hand then I would be suspicious.

    I need to move an iTunes library to an External Hard Drive to free up space on iMac.  I Need suggestions on type of External Hard Drive to use.  Should you use a Multimedia Hard Drive like LaCie LaCinema Classic HD Multimedia Hard Drive OR a standard Large Desktop Hard Drive like Western Digital/Seagate/LaCie?

    There is no benefit to the multi-media feature on the first drive you mentioned. If you are going to look at differences between certain drives, I'd look at the differences in reliability first.

    Well, try this (I was able to fix my with these steps):
    Go Utilities > Disk Utility
    Select your Startup Disk, e.g. Macintosh HD
    Then, under the First Aid Tab, click Verify Disk Permissions.
    If there are errors, then click repair Disk Permissions.
    After it is done, restart the computer and see if your problem is resolved.
    I hope this help.

  • Do I need to shut down my iMac (intel) before attaching an external HD?

    Hi
    Should I be shutting down my iMac before plugging in an external HD (LaCie).  It'll go to the FW800 or eSata port.
    Thanks
    Allen

    You certainly don't need to shut down your computer at all, but remember that when you want to remove the external drive, make sure you either drag its icon to the trash or use the eject ⌘ e command.

  • Recommendation needed on: Locking Down BW Client / Object Changeability:

    Hello Experts,
    We recently had a problem on our production box and we found the need to lock down the environment with scc4.
    We further used object changeability to control the environment and it has been hell ever since. Users have had difficulties running queries, etc.
    In a typical BW production environment, what is the approach and what is the common practice?
    (Please for each recommended approach include any command you mention)
    For example, what transaction do we use to see various users and their authorizations, etc. Who made modification on which object, etc.
    Thanks.

    Hi Amanda,
    In SCC4, you should maintain following values.
    Under
    >Changes and transport for client specific objects
    no changes allowed
    under
    >Cross client object changes
    no changes to repository and cross client customizing
    objects
    Under
    > Protection : Client copier and comparison tool
    Protection level 1: NO OVERWRITING

  • What is the best way to shut down an iMac that has frozen during a data transfer? The disk I was writing to will not eject. Stopping "copy items to" doesn't work either_ it is frozen as well. Is there a way to force eject the disk so I can shut down?

    Some more information on the above: OS: 7.2
    1. None of the shutdown commands would work so I held the power button down and received a prompt that asked if I wished to force eject the drive, I selected
    the force eject and then shut down.
    2. Just recently I installed an eSATA _ Thunderbolt_ port multiplier compliant PCIe card (Seritek Q6G) into a thunderbolt external chassis (OWC Helios) (seritek Q6G).
    This freeze data transfer also happened when I connected a Firmtek 5PM external tower to the iMac via thunderbolt cable.
    The driver for the seritek Q6G was installed in the iMac previous to connection of any of the devices.
    Both external towers mount ok on the iMac but have frozen during data transfer.
    The initial freeze was with the Firmtek 5PM which is (JBOD)_ I thought that might have had something to do with the freeze_ it being JBOD_ so next I tried the Mercury Elite AL Pro Q2- which is formated in RAID 5. But then froze too.
    Anybody have any experience with this?
    Maybe I need another driver?
    Or maybe some update to my OS?
    Any suggestions welcomed.
    Thank you

    Hello BDAqua, thanx for the suggestions. Before I saw this reply I tried to first quit the finder and then to relaunch the Finder but that resulted was a blank gray screen.
    In the end I ended up having to power down the iMac.
    Fortunately the RAID array that was "active" seems to be fine and also has a firewire 800 connection so I can use it_ just not with thunderbolt until this issue is solved.
    I'm going to check in the Applications>Utilities>system log to see if any clues are evident_ thank you for the suggestion.
    PS: Nothing of note was obvious as a root cause in the Activity Monitor though.
    hmmm....I was told that the Helios and seritek card were compatable and that the Helios didn't require any drivers..it will be a drag if there isn't an easy fix for this since this new PCIe card from seritek is the first to offer port multiplier compatibility for eSATA to thunderbolt...since they are both new I'm hoping that an OS upgrade will be the fix (presently7.2)...we shall see.

  • Things You Need To Know about old= New iMac

    1) Your HP All-In-One printer/scanner/copier - will it work with this new Leopard iMac? Maybe. I struggled with the all-in-one Printer Scanner Copier PSC 2355 for hours, and that includes reading the discussion forums on Apple's website. Apple support will tell you to call HP. HP will tell you to call Apple, or to check back for updated drivers. This was unacceptable. I finally crossed my fingers and loaded HP drivers for "Tiger", the previous OS version. Hey, the PSC 2355 works perfectly. Hope you have success also.
    (2) PPT and PPS files in email. If you do not have Microsoft Office and PowerPoint, you need to know this: iMac comes with a trial version of Keynote and a trial version of PowerPoint software. If you receive a PowerPoint slide show from a friend, and you click on it to view it in Mail, Keynote may open up, for the first month or so. But if you don't buy keynote, this will eventually stop working. If MS PowerPoint opens up, same trouble - it may work a month or so. On my machine, the trial version actually locked up the iMac at the "Splash Screen". And if you don't buy Keynote, MS PowerPoint or MS Office for Mac, then your last hope for seeing PPT and PPS files is "Quicklook" which doesn't step through slides one at a time, but presents them as a long document. Not so great. Our solution was (A) delete the trail versions, and (B) buy a family pack of iWork and then everyone gets Keynote. Too bad the PPT and PPS music doesn't work.
    (3) Moving old iMac (circa 2001) files to new iMac. This worked very nicely and seamlessly - all the music, photos, passwords, bookmarks, email moved smoothly from old iMac to new iMac. Only thing is... I think some old crap also moved. Old stuff that will never work in Leopard such as OS 9 apps and games. Even found some old fonts moved. THUS, we received an error "Helvetica narrow substituted for Helvetica which is corrput". Apple support was useless, telling me to reinstall the entire system, which did not solve the problem. After reading Apple discussions, someone suggested copying the fonts from the system folder to the user's library folder. Problem goes away, all is well.
    (4) Thus, once you get these kinks worked out, you will LOVE this new iMac. built in camera, mic, fantastic screen and color rendition, fast processor, wonderful iLife apps, and the whole experience. Hope my comments help you transition into your new Mac Life.

    I have my Mini Mac with Leopard 10.5.1 for about 3 weeks. My learning curve looks like a dead man's EKG, thus my simplistic question: OpenOffice or NeoOffice? I basically write and have old files rescued from my Windows 98 written in Word 2000. For my purposes, is one office program preferable to the other?
    Thanks.

  • Is it possible to lock down the _vti_bin and _layouts pages with a wildcard option.

    Hi all,
    A client of mine is running an internet facing sharepoint site. I have managed to lock down the _vti_bin and _layouts pages users for anonymous by using the following entries in my main web.config file:
    <location path="_layouts">
          <system.web>
            <authorization>
              <deny users="?" />
            </authorization>
          </system.web>
        </location>
    and
    <location path="_vti_bin">
          <system.web>
            <authorization>
              <deny users="?" />
            </authorization>
          </system.web>
        </location>
    But this is only ok for the root site collection. Is there a way to lock down all site collections, including sub sites with a type of wildcard entry?
    Due to the nature of the clients business, they will be creating many site collections and subsites. I am trying to find a scalable way to manage this. To add an entry for every new site collection or subsite that gets created on the fly does not seem like
    the most manageable solution.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Regards
    Mirco

    Hi Sachin,
    Thank You very much for the feedback. The info to secure system pages from authenticated FBA users is very helpful and I will definitely  implement it.  With reference to your second post. This is actually the information I used to lock down my
    sites from anonymous users. Applying this method I noticed that you needed to put an entry for every single site collection and sub site collection, e.g. if I ONLY had a site collection at
    https://me.myserver.com then the following entries in the web.config would secure the _vti_bin and _layouts folder from anonymous users:
    <location path="_layouts">
          <system.web>
            <authorization>
              <deny users="?" />
            </authorization>
          </system.web>
        </location>
    and
    <location path="_vti_bin">
          <system.web>
            <authorization>
              <deny users="?" />
            </authorization>
          </system.web>
        </location>
    But lets say I added another site collection at
    https://me.myserver.com/sites/mysitecollection I would have to add the following entries to the web.config file to secure it from anonymous users:
    <location path="sites/mysitecollection/_layouts">
          <system.web>
            <authorization>
              <deny users="?" />
            </authorization>
          </system.web>
        </location>
    and
    <location path="sites/mysitecollection/_vti_bin">
          <system.web>
            <authorization>
              <deny users="?" />
            </authorization>
          </system.web>
        </location>
    Now this method might be manageable if you are only gonna have 5 or 10 site or subsite collections. My client will have 30, 40, 50, who knows how many. This is why I am trying to find a more manageable way of locking these sites down.
    You can imagine what my web.config will look like eventually and the admin involved in continuously adding these entries to the web.config file to keep it safe from anonymous users.

  • Security - Locking Down Oracle 9i

    Anyone,
    I have been asked by our auditors to lock down my Oracle environment by disabling the default accounts that are not needed.
    What User Accounts can I disable (Lock) and not break my Oracle environment?
    I am looking at the following:
    DBSNMP
    OUTLN
    WMSYS
    Will I break anything if I disable these accounts?
    Thanks in advance,
    Miller

    Hi
    DBSNMP User:
    For database event monitoring, it is recommended you use the pre-existing DBSNMP user account.The DBSNMP user is automatically created with each new database and is already used for basic monitoring such as checking database availability. When setting up the EM Event owner’s preferences for Preferred Credentials, specify DBSNMP as database credentials for all monitored databases. This account will be used by the agent for monitoring and historical data collection as well as by the OMS/Console for database browsing. The DBSNMP user has already been granted some basic privileges. However, if it is to be used for all database event monitoring, you will also need to grant:
    SELECT_CATALOG_ROLE role.
    OUTLN User:
    This user is used while using TKPROF utility
    select user# from sys.user$ where name = 'OUTLN'
    WMSYS: Don't know about this user.
    I suggest to remove only SCOTT user account, as this is a demo user account.
    Hope this was useful.
    Thank You

  • IPhoto shuts down my iMac

    When I try to work in iPhoto it shuts down my iMac. I had a lot of problems with iPhoto in December and worked with an Apple Advisor then to rebuild my library and every thing was fine for a while... then the shut downs started happening. Randomly at first, now all the time. I have a 24" iMac with 4G ram, my library has 11K photos... running most current versions of both iPhoto and Lion. Have MobileMe but haven't switched to iCloud yet. Evidently I'm no longer covered under Applecare as the advisor informed me when I called. He suggested one option would be to lug my computer into a genius bar, not easily done and wondering how this would be a hardware issue... although I'm willing to do this to resolve this issue. Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated.

    First   launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it doesn't the the problem lies with your original library.
    In that case make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
    Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
    Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
    Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
    Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
    In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
    Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
    If the new, test library also crashes your Mac a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
    Click to view full size
    Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally and apply all applicable updaters.
