Need To Add 2nd Hard Drive

Hello All,
I need to add a second drive to my powermac g5. I have the stock 80gb drive in there and want to get the largest, fastest drive the g5 will accept for the second slot. Does anyone know what the largest drive size i can put in there is? 500gb acceptable? Any recommendations on which one to buy/where?
thanks!

Hi-
You don't say what model your G5 is.
Go to the following link, choose your G5 model, click "data storage upgrades", and your options will be listed:

The Maxtor Maxline Pro 500gb is a very good drive, and at a very good price.

  • GT780dxr add 2nd hard drive - AHCI mode

I have a gt780dxr with one drive, ocz vertex 3, 2nd bay is empty.  The bios is set in raid mode which is correct.
I am trying to add a 2nd hard drive and it isn't recognized in the bios.  It is seated properly and does work as I can use it on other laptops.
    I have 3 questions.
    1. Is there anything special that needs to be done when installing a 2nd drive on this system?
    2. I tried to change the bios to ahci mode and get bsod.  Is this normal?  Should I be able to move from one setting to another.  I really don't care about the change but thought it may be needed to install the 2nd hard drivve.
    3. There is a rubber block to keep the 2nd drive seated properly.  I don't think it is sufficient.  Any other ideas or where I can get a hard drive caddy/enclosure.
    Thanks

I wouldn't have thought it would make much difference. Simply make sure the boot order is correct in the BIOS.
I'm not familiar with hard drive mounting in notebooks so can't comment much. If you post a picture of the bay with the drive in I may think of something if I can.
The fit surprised me also, the samsung is 9.5mm and the bay is 12.5mm, i believe.  Plus there is nothing really to hold it in.  I will work on a picture.  I guess I could get some styrofoam and put it in there to keep in place?  Any other products that would be safe?
    The more important question...
There is no issue with the interface speed?  I know there is 6gb and 3gb?  Not sure if both controllers are 6gb?

  • Need help adding 2nd hard drive

Hey guys whats up. I need some advice about adding a second hard drive. Right now i have a WD 320GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive running on the primary IDE. Everything is fine but i wanted to get a smaller and faster drive for the operating system and for some small video editing. I recently purchaced a Western Digital Raptor 36.7GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive.
    Now the questions:
     1. How should i assing the drives? (which master/slave/cable select)
     2. Also am i going to have to do anything since im going to have one on the IDE and another on SATA?
     3. Any advice that you have...
What i was thinking is this...i should disconect my current HD and hook up the new one to SATA port 2, and set it to master(or CS maybe). Format it and then install the operating system. Once OS installed and working, ill hook back up the IDE drive and make the setting to slave(or CS maybe). Then uninstall the operating system from the IDE.
    Thanks for any input

    Thanks NovJoe,
What setting (master/slave/cable select) should i set the IDE drive to? And yes i do want my OS on the raptor.
Thanks for your advice...didnt think that anyone was going to.

  • Need to add new hard drive. What type do I need?

I am adding a new hard drive for my Mac Pro. Got it last year. I am looking at 2 hard drives my Seagate.
750 GB 3.5 SATA II NCQ Internal HD
    750 GB 3.5 Ultra ATA/ 100 Internal HD.
Which of the 2 will work in my computer?
Thanks in advance for the help.
    - Dan

There have been problems with older Seagate 7200.10s but not .11s but they must be SATA. It really is there in the Do It Yourself mini booklet and pdf manual, or look at the specs and slots.
The Seagates were slow and there was a firmware update for some models.

You could put your install disc on a USB Flash drive with Disk Utility. Also, here is the USB optical drive enclosure I bought. He raised the price a few bucks. Mine ran $10.00 with the shipping.

How to add a 2nd hard drive to HP Pavilion DV7-3165DX, product # WA794UA or WA794UAR.
    (1) Order HDD, hard drive, hardware kit. HDD hardware kit includes mounting rails, static shield, screws, rubber isolators, and SATA to motherboard cable. Check your model & Product # for compatibility.
         HP Parts HDD hardware kit 517639-001 for DV7-3165DX product# WA794UA and WA794UAR.
    (2) Consult Drives - Windows 7 PDF, table of contents, 7 Replacing a drive in the secondary hard drive bay. This will show you how to install a 2nd HDD in a HP DV7.
          Drives - Windows 7 PDF
    (3) In Windows 7 select Computer, Select the HDD installed, Format (if not already formatted).
    (4) If HDD does not show up in Windows 7 under Computer, go to Start (Menu), Search Programs and Files, enter "Computer Management", select Storage, Disk Management (Local), look for the Bay 2 HDD (should show up as Disc 1, Bay 1 HDD should show as Disc 0), Format the 2nd HDD (The one you just installed).
Update: I have the 2nd HDD (WD 1TB) installed, Windows now recognises it after completing the steps I mentioned in step 4, Format with default allocation NTFS 931.51GB free, 118MB used for formatting. Format with default allocation exFAT 931.51GB free, 1MB used for formatting. I selected NTFS format to reduce file fragmenting.

When i added my 2nd HDD I was ready to get it ordered and shipped, so it would arrive before I arrived home. I also was not sure if it would be offered anywhere else and be 100% compatible. The quality of the factory HP part is good. Since then I found a cheeper source. Newmodeus DV7-3xxx Hard Drive Caddy $27.95 +tax +shipping. Not sure if the quality is the same. • 2nd hard drive for HP Pavilion dv7t-4000 CTO Notebook - What do I need?

Hi, I have the HP Pavilion dv7t-4000 CTO Select Edition Entertainment Notebook (Product # WV703AV). It has room for two harddrives but only came with one. What would I need in order to install the second hard drive? Would I need just a connecting cable or do I also need caddy or kit?
Also, could I get a solid state? Would my notebook support that or does it only use regular ones?
    Currently, I'm running Windows 7 64bit. I've got a 500GB hd (which came partitioned with hp tools/recovery).
Any help with what I would need for a traditional hdd or ssd would be greatly appreciated. I tried to look through other people's posts first,  but couldn't find anything specific to my model. Thanks for your time!

    Hi:
The only place I know of where you can get a 2nd hard drive kit is from this vendor.
    http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=345
Your notebook should be able to work with a SSD but I cannot guarantee it.
I really don't see any point in adding a SSD unless you make it the primary hard drive, and in order to do that, you would need to get a SSD the same size as the original 500 GB hard drive to use the recovery disks to reinstall the operating system.
Most folks get smaller SSD's and they use the W7 product key to activate a plain installation of W7.
If you can read all 25 characters of your windows 7 product key you can make your own installation media and use that to install Windows on a smaller than 500 GB SSD.
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Or use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link  below. You need a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
    http://download.cnet.com/Windows-7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool/3000-18513_4-10972600.html
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.

  • Looking for a 2nd hard drive on DV9700

I want to add a 2nd hard drive to my HP dv9728ca. Are there any specs I should look for? Right now I have a 160GB hd, and the manual ( http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01295898.pdf ) seems to indicate my only choices are 120GB or 160GB. According to the service manual, if I want a 200GB or 250GB, I can't use my 160GB anymore. The possible options are as follows : 250x2 (5400), 200x2 (4200), 160x2 (5400), 160+120 (5400), 120x2 (5400 or 7200, but both the same). Now I've upgraded computers before, even built some from scratch, and I've never seen this type of requirement. Is this for real? I've read a post from someone saying he had trouble with his new drive which was bigger than his original one. What about the 1.5GB/sec vs 3.0GB/sec? My understanding is that the 3.0 is downward compatible, but some seem to pretend you have to set a jumper on the drive to bring it down to 1.5. Any help would be appreciated. And what if I add a 7200rpm drive instead of 5400rpm? I don't see how these should cause any trouble, but from looking around it seems HP motherboards are very specific as to what they'll let you do. I already purchased the caddy kit, all I need is the hard drive, but I don't want to end up with one that's not compatible.
If anyone's added an additional hard drive to a dv9700 series laptop, please let me know what model you chose (brand, capacity vs what you had, 5400/7200, 8MB/16MB).

Hi, I have dv9730ca laptop myself and I have 2 160GB seagate 5400rpm 8MB hdd's, they have an external data transfer rate of 300MB/sec and an internal data transfer rate of 1.1GB/sec. They do get up to around 55oC (i use cpuid - hwmonitor to check this out) and I have heard using the 7200rpm hdd's can increase the heat output so I would recommend using the 5400rpm hdd's instead. The best way I have found to get over the heat issue from any laptop is to use a targus chillmat, it has 2 fans and runs off a usb port. I hope this info helps you out

Please reinstall a copy of the above file
    WinXP still boots ok.

  • HELP-2nd hard drive

How do I get Solaris to recognize and use my 2nd hard drive.
It is installed and recoegnized by the BIOS, the previous OS had no difficulty seeing it.
It's not that Solaris cant' it's that I don't know how to tell it to.

Run "devfsadm -v". This instructs the solaris kernel to
search for new hardware using all available drivers.
Device nodes for new hardware are created.
The -v option will print the names of the new device nodes.
(Instead of using devfsadm, you can also perform a
"reconfiguration boot", i.e. boot with the flag "-r").
Next, you can run the "format" utility. Format should
offer a menu with all recognized disks, including the new
one. Select the new HDD from the menu. Inside "format"
you can create fdisk partitions (for solaris x86 you need a
"Solaris" fdisk partition). Once you have a solaris fdisk
partition, you can subdivide the solaris fdisk partition into multiple "slices" using format's partition menu.
When you're satisfied with the slice setup, "label" the disk.
The next step is to create filesystems on the slices using
the "newfs" command. The new slices with the fresh
    filesystem can now me mounted.
To automatically mount the new slices on a reboot, add
    appropriate lines to /etc/vfstab.

  • Can't access 2nd hard drive - " ..you do not have sufficient privileges"

I recently performed an Erase & Install on my PowerPC G5. Everything is fine with the main HD, but not with my 2nd hard drive; I can't access it (The folder "Hard Drive 2" could not be opened becuase you do not have the sufficient privileges).
The icon for it appears on my desktop with a lock on it, but when I hit Control-I to Get Info there is no option to Unlock the volume. Furthermore, under Sharing & Permissions all Privileges are listed as "Custom" and amongst the usual Names (system, admin, everyone" there are 2 additional headings, both (unknown). When I try to change any of the settings to Read & Write (or anything, for that matter), the change does not stick and it reverts back to Custom immediately.
Lastly, when I try to add myself to the Name list, it also does not stick and i remain un-added. I have checked the "Ignore ownership on this volume" box with no changed results.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

Glad to hear! Sometimes the awesome power of the root user is what is needed. I have been a less than enchanted user of Unix for maybe 29 years now, avoiding wherever possible but gritting my teeth and dealing with it when absolutely necessary. That a little Unix insight is useful from time to time with OS X is a bit of a blessing, considering the alternatives.

  • My plan to get win7 on 2nd hard drive

    Hi all,
I recently bought a new 15" MPB with an apple installed 128gb SSD drive.
My plan was to install a 2nd hard drive in the DVD spot, a 500gb with a 70ish GB win7 partition. I would like to use Win 7 for screencasting for windows tutorials and for Gaming...mostly for gaming
I thought, naively, that this would be a simple boot agent setup...boy was I wrong.
I have already installed the 500gb drive in the optibay, it is working fine
I did not realize that a macbook pro cannot boot to an external drive or dvd. I could be wrong here but all my research seems to indicate that it can't...using something like refit does not fix this problem
I tried going through the boot camp setup with my external dvd drive attached through USB...did not work
also tried a USB thumb drive...no dice
I'd like to avoid having win7 on my 128gb ssd as there is limited space
my current plan is this...if it doesn't make sense or seems wrong please let me know
put the dvd drive back in
make a bootcamp partition on the sad...maybe 35gbs
    install win7
if thats working ok put the hard drive back in
use win clone to clone the bootcamp win7 to the hard drive
    hopefully that will work...
I'm just not sure how I'm going to partition the drive
I would like a 100gb ntfs partition for windows
    and the rest partitioned mac
looks like win clone can expand the image to the larger partition
ipartition seems like it would work for this, but not sure
any ideas on how I can make a ntfs partition on the internal?
can I partition the drive with a windows machine? maybe do the 400gb as exfat?
    thanks

    Get http://www.virtualbox.org/
It lets you setup your own Windows virtualized disk image anywhere you like it.  You'll still need to boot into Mac OS X, but it can run either seemlessly with Windows or full screen if you so desire.
As for booting externally, Mac OS X has no trouble booting on external drives on any MacBook Pro.  As for Boot Camp, check with the Boot Camp forum.
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp
Note, when using external hard drive for anything but backup, how many copies you have of information that is both on the internal and external drive.
There should be at least two separate external copies of all your data somewhere in event one fails.
