Need to add a storage drive that I can use between my Imac and Windows

I have a new storage drive that I want to partition and format for write capability on the Imac for storing large files that are used with other programs while working with the Imac but I also want to place an NTFS partition on that drive for use in Windows. The drive is 1Tb and I only need about 50% for each system.
I partitioned and formated the first partition using Disk utility and created a FAT 32 in the other but the FAT 32 limitations in Windows is a problem.
Is it possible to format the first partion in Window NTFS and the second using Disk Utility as a FAT 32 or another partition system that the Imac can read so I can at least have the NTFS partition recoginzed in Windows?
Is this possible?
How do I do it??

  • What is the best software programs that I can use to read, write and modify data / files on external HD (NTFS format i.e.  Windows) ?

    Hi guys,
I’m new to Mac and have a MacBook Pro Lion OS (10.6.8 I think !!!) with Parallels 7 (Windows 7) installed. Can someone please tell me what is the best software program that I can use to read, write and modify data / files on external HD (NTFS format) from the Mac OS ? I heard of Paragon and Tuxera NTFS. Are they free ? Are they good ? Are there any other software programs out there ? I heard that some people have issues with Paragon.
    Thanks.

Your best bet would be to take the drive to the oldest/compatible with that drive Windows PC and grab the files off, right click and format it exFAT (XP users can download exFAT from Microsoft) and then put the files back on.
Mac's can read and write all Windows files formats except write to NTFS (and in some cases not read) so if you can change the format of the drive to exFAT (all data has to be remove first) then you will have a drive that doesn't require paid third party NTFS software (a license fee goes to Microsoft) for updates.
Also it's one less hassle to deal with too.

  • How do I add an app so that it can use Location Services under Mountain Lion?

Ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, my VPN is no longer able to determine my location so that it can connect to the nearest gateway. I have Location Services enabled but my VPN is not listed as an app that is allowed to use it nor can I figure out a way to add it and at no time does it ever ask to use it. So how exactly do I add an app so that it will use Location Services?

  • My imac hard drive is almost full?  Can i add an external drive that will serve as both the main and back-up drive?

my imac 500g internal drive is nearly full, so i plan to add an external desktop drive.  i also need to use time machine for backups--can i simply buy one large drive to handle both needs, or do i need a dedicated drive for the time machine?
    thanks!

I've racked my brain with this issue - done everything I know to do - and still I get this:
I've clearly moved everything to external drives except for 1GB of dropbox data that I keep across all my devices.
I've tried all of 'where did my disk space go' 's suggestions.
Terminal commands to disable local backup
What's interesting to me about this is that I do have 4.45 GB of Applications - is that “Other?”
I'm to the point where I'd like to wipe and start all over.. but that scares me! Suggestions?

  • I want to move all my email data over the past several years from one yahoo account to another. I am told that I can use Thunderbird to copy and paste . How?

I wish to close down one email account but have no time to indivuidaully send emails out piecemeal to my newly set-up email address/account.
I want to keep the same InBox and Sent data columns as I have always had with dates associated with each email.
I was told that setting up Thunderbird to deal with emailing can facilitate this copying and pasting between two accounts.
Once done I wish to close my first email account ( its unfortuneately contractually linked to my old iphone 4 and I have changed cell phone companies so I am still keeping that account alive while I sort out how to move my data out into my new email account) and stick to using the new account.
Both are yahoo.co.jp email accounts. Yes, I live in Japan.
The Thunderbird program seems to have accessed and stored all of my email data . It did so quickly.
Please advise what to do next.
    Thanks

He will run into a problem when he wants to use his own account.  Some apps will have been purchased on one Apple ID and other apps will have been purchased on a different Apple ID.  That's a nuisance situation when the apps need updating and, unfortunately, there is no resolution at the present time (IDs can not be combined).

  • Does the time capsule work as an external hard drive that you can access from multiple lapttops

I have a mac desktop, a macbook and a pc laptop. I also purchased the time capsule. Will that functional as an external hard drive that I can use to save a share documents between. Trying to figure out the best way to work on documents between devices. new to max and trying to make the full switch but still working with toshiba laptop for a while too.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hello jhettenhausen,
Yes, it can function as an external drive for all the devices.  As for Windows, you just need to make sure that
it is Windows Professional or XP, as they support mapped network drives.  Windows 7 Home Premium doesn't is not capable of mapping network drives.  At home, I have a ubuntu laptop, Windows 7 Profesional laptop, and Macbook Pro and they all backup to the Time Capsule 1 TB.  Hope this helps!!

The largest capacity HDD that you can install is the HGST 1.5 TB HDD:

Any 2.5" 9.5mm thick SATA HDD will fit and operate in your MBP, regardless of capacity.

It would be much better if you had separate drives for the pictures and Time Machine backups.....but, if you want to use the same drive for both purposes, temporarily move the folder with the pictures to another location for safe storage.
Run the Time Machine backup on the hard drive and verify that everything is working correctly. Time Machine will format the disk for you in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as part of the backup process.
Then move the folder with the pictures back to the hard drive with the Time Machine backups.
When you have tested to make sure that everything is working again, then and only then should you delete the folder with pictures from the temporary storage area.
Again....it would be much better to keep Time Machine backups on a drive just for that purpose, and other data on another drive for that purpose. This is clearly one of those times when the fact that you can do something does not mean to imply that you should do it.

  • Need To Add 2nd Hard Drive

    Hello All,
I need to add a second drive to my powermac g5. I have the stock 80gb drive in there and want to get the largest, fastest drive the g5 will accept for the second slot. Does anyone know what the largest drive size i can put in there is? 500gb acceptable? Any recommendations on which one to buy/where?
    thanks!

    Hi-
You don't say what model your G5 is.
Go to the following link, choose your G5 model, click "data storage upgrades", and your options will be listed:

Let's hope a couple things: that you have bootable clones of your drives also; that the backup drive for TimeMachine has over 3x capacity of the data you plan and are storing. I would also switch TM backup drives so you have a 2nd.
Fragmented free space affecting performance happens when the drive is too full which may mean there isn't enough free space for a full backup set.
1.5TB for backing up 500GB, while WD Green 3TB is $140 and WD Black 1.5TB is, about the same price.
I'd be worried about the integrity and directory, and whether you can afford to lose that drive. Defragging is also a very slow operation. the ideal: to just clone a drive, or start over with another drive and wait. cloning TM volumes has not been done or has it? SuperDuper hoped to but I don't think they or Bombich's CCC made it there.
Trouble with highly fragged is when free space gets to 20% normally, 1/3 or so though for TM volumes, and finding where and a chunk of space for the file being written. Does TM use large spare image files of like 2GB?
Best would be to ask in the TimeMachine section Snow Leopard

  • Should I add external hard drive so I can update to os10?

I was trying to get a new printer for my 266 slot loading I mac. A mac nerd at Fry's said I could connect an external hard drive (USB) and move my applications to it which would free up room on the imac to load os10 (I assume Panther). Does this sound feasible? I have 256 ram. Do I need more ram than that??I'm not a techie but have a son who is a mac addict and could help. (new printers mostly want os10)

Your iMac 266 has the old/slow USB 1.1 bus, and it doesn't provide a bootable option for an external hard drive. Even running applications from it would be slow, so I wouldn't advise doing that, just to free more space on the internal hard drive for an OS X installation. A larger internal hard drive is a more viable option, but does require mechanical aptitude for disassembly of the iMac. You'd need to install more RAM for OS X, and lacking onboard FireWire would rule out the current OS 10.4.x (Tiger). You'd probably have to settle for Jaguar or Panther. If you add the costs of the OS X installer CDs, more memory, and new hard drive, you could be applying the same $$ toward a newer (even used) Mac.
What type of printer do you need/want - inkjet or laser? As an alternative to upgrading the iMac, have you considered purchasing a used printer, that would be compatible with the iMac and its pre-OS X software? As an example, the (now-discontinued) Epson Stylus Color 740 or 740i is a good, photo-quality inkjet printer, that's supported for use with Macs via USB and the older serial interface. It's also compatible with PCs via the parallel port interface or USB, so it can be shared between the two platforms. I've purchased 5 or 6 of these printers (used) at thrift stores, because I've always been satisfied with the one I purchased new in 2001. They're more than adequate for most print jobs - including very satisfactory color photo printing, and cost me less than the prices of the replacement ink tanks. If there are any thrift stores in your area that accept donated computers and related peripherals, you might want to check them out for one.

  • Is there going to be a firmware upgrade for mountain lion customers that have a Macbook with a soild state drive so we can use the Power Nap feature?

Is there going to be a firmware upgrade for mountain lion customers that have a Macbook with a soild state drive so we can use the Power Nap feature?

    here: http://www.apple.com/osx/whats-new/
"Power Nap requires a Mac notebook with built-in flash storage. May require a firmware update."
We have to wait for the Firmware-Updates. Some are already here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5394
And I am shure, that you will need for Power Nap one of the newer Macs with SSD from 2011 and 2012.
