Need to back up 2010 imac, then address slowness

I need this computer for my business and would appreciate any help in getting it running properly again. Thank you in advance for your help.
1) Haven't been able to back up with Time Capsule since my back up drive ran out of space in late September. Purchased a new drive, it starts the process but quits itself before completing.
2) When the computer is woken up and I am logged in, the top bar is greyed out. With time,  if I click on it, it will switch to white and work.  Everything launches slowly. Lots of bouncing icons and time before applications launch. Mail, Adobe: PS, LR, BR all take 30 seconds or more to launch.  In Proselect, if I stop working in the application, it will freeze up & give the wheel before it works again.
3) As of this morning, I cannot launch ical on the desktop.
4) I have many applications, downloads, documents, etc that I don't need anymore. How do I safely and properly uninstall and remove them. For example, the palm pre keeps popping up and I thought I had removed it.
Here is the EtreCheck info
Problem description:
The computer is running really slow. When I wake it up, there is a several minute delay for the desktop icons to fully appear and function. Frequently, I get the wheel.
Time Machine: I have been unable to back up for more than 120 days. The initial issue was that my back up drive was out of space. I have purchased a new external drive, have followed the instructions via doc: 6921 to reset Time Machine. It now begins backing up but quits before it finishes.
I have had the 4 language screen happen when I am uploading Blood Glucose Devices to Diasend. Each time I disconnect a device, so that I can connect the next one, it crashes.
External Drive: In November, I purchased a my book duo for additional storage using mirror drive back up. I have received consistent stripe raid failure messages even though the drive is formatted as a mirror raid.
I know that I need to “clean out the closet” on the desktop, but don’t know how to do that safely and effectively. Clearly, the first step is to get a full backup, but I would really welcome instructions.

Or you can simply use the Restore option of Disk Utility to clone the drive to the backup:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • Do I need to back up my iMac on an external hard drive?

I have Time Machine operating so I wonder if it is a waste of an external hard drive to back everything up.  My computer is just over a year old.   Any advice welcomed!
    Thanks,
    Emshee

Well, if you throw something in the trash from an external hard drive, you do need to empty the trash while that drive is still attached - otherwise you do not regain the space.
As for keeping old backups: I've developed my own system - I archive (so to speak) my important personal and financial info for the entire year on two DVDs and then I get rid of it on the computer (therefore also on my bootable clones). You may want to keep more than that - personally I don't need it.
A bootable clone is an exact copy = clone of your entire system on an external hard drive - the advantage is that it is bootable. If your hard drive dies, plug in your bootable clone, boot from it, and you're back in business in a few minutes. If you need to reinstall Mountain Lion, clone it back from your clone. Infinite uses. Like WZZZ, I do not use Time Machine - I prefer being in charge of what gets backed up and when. I have no need to get things backed up every hour.

  • Do I need to back up my iMac to an external HD? if so should I partion the drive and use it for storage as well

    At a loss...

Highly recommended you have at lesat the incremental backups automated by Time Machine (the software).  Time Machine makes backups so easy to setup and after that you ‘forget’ about backups as all tasks occur in the background, hourly by default.
If you use Time Capsule (the hardware) for your backups, you should not partition that drive.  If you use a conventional external drive, you can consider partitioning it so that one volume is dedicated to Time Machine and one volume for example for other data purposes.  When you have an external drive, you need to drag it to the Trash icon on the dock to eject the drive before you shutdown (or restart) the computer; this will ensure all data is physically written to the drive and buffers cleared.  When you partition the external drive, ensure that both partitions are ejected before you shutdown.
The first time Time Machine runs, it does a full backup and can take quite a long time depending upon how much you are backing up.  After that, it only backs up data that has changed and is usually very quick.  At anytime, you can delete those backups and do a new full backup if you wish.  It keeps old versions of everything you backup as long as you have space on the drive.  When you are nearly out of space, Time Machine deletes the oldest versions of files until it has made enough room to continue backups.  You’ll always have at least one complete image of all your data backed up assuming your backup volume is always larger than the data you wish to backup.  If your backup disk is not large enough to hold everything, you can select files you do not wish to be backed up by Time Machine, for instance, you may have large video capture files from HDV tape that you do not need to backup because they are already on tape.

  • Can't back-up new iMac with fusion HD.  The back-up proceeds to within 10% of the total storage needed and then the "of" number increases.  I suspect there is a problem with backing up the fusion drive.  We have a new 3 TB time Capsule.  Any ideas?

Can't back-up new iMac with fusion HD.  The back-up proceeds to within 10% of the total storage needed and then the "of" number increases.  I suspect there is a problem with backing up the fusion drive.  We have a new 3 TB time Capsule.  I tried excluding different parts of the software from the back-up but it didn't make any difference.  I even tried exluding "invisible items" to no avail.  Any ideas?

When you setup the wireless and ethernet in the computer.. ipv6 will be on automatic.. this is wrong for the latest TC firmware and airport utility. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4597
Go to the wireless and ethernet setup in preferences and change ipv6 to link local.
Once you do the big backup by ethernet the wireless will function fine for incremental.. it is obviously not estimating the size correctly..
A full back-up on the iMac would be about 650 GB.  The partial updates that I have been trying start out at 115MB and keep growing indefinitely.  The original back-up never finished nor have any of the follow-up attempts.
The first estimate should be the full backup but it will keep growing as the backup advances.. I would also delete any inprogress files to make sure it is not messing up .. delete even a sparsebundle if there is one for the imac on the TC and start afresh once you have ethernet connection.
    See A10 here.
Pondini may have some other clues there to give you an idea of why the backup is slow or not finishing.. there is a lot of issues with TM when it decides not to work.

  • I created a slideshow using lightroom3 with music at 1070p, then put it to both a CD and a DVD.  I cannot play either back on my iMac.  It is jumpy and unusable on playback.  Different Video card needed?  Any Help?

I created a slideshow using lightroom3 at 1070p with music.  After transferring the slideshow to a DVD I could not play it back on my iMac without a lot of skipping.  Any ideas? Different Video card??

As I said, I've not used Lightroom (and I tried to find some info on the Adobe website, but they like to make it difficult to find things - the only thing easy to find was the "buy" button LOL).
I get some pretty good quality - and actually reduce my videos from 1080 to 720p because of the enormous file size, rendering time required, and the fact that I simply cannot tell the difference on my 42" HDTV. My workflow is: create a slideshow in Photo to Movie (I've found that superior to anything else I've tried), add that to my iMovie project (in between video clips, etc), add transitions, titles, or whatever. Export at the highest settings (experimented with different settings on a 30 sec clip) to desktop. Fire up iDVD, customize a theme/menu with videos, music, stills and then add my movie(s). Encode there to highest quality, create a Video TS folder (which will include all the files necessary so you can delete the originals if you want) or burn from there. If I do the folder method, I use Roxio Toast to burn it at the slowest speed available.
Using that workflow, my movies rock (if I say so myself  ) and have a great quality. And I've never had a coaster.

  • My iMac 8.1 was slowing down and had permissions problems. I backed everything up, and then re-installed. Now all I get is a black screen. Power+D gives me a hardware error message: HDD-1336. Help!

My iMac 8.1 (10.6.8 ) was slowing down and had recurrent permissions problems, mostly with Java. I backed everything up, and then re-installed from time machine. Now all I get is a black screen which says I need to reboot. Power+D gives me a hardware error message: 4 MOT/1/40000003: HDD-1336 or HDD-1327. When I reboot from the OSX CD and start disc utilities everything checks out OK. When I reload 10.5.2 from the OSX CD everything seems to work OK and no more permissions problems. But then I loose all my email and safari stuff. Anyone have any ideas short of going back to my old PC?

    Hi
Thanks for the help. No point in fooling around with it any more. Will I be able to use it as a monitor if I get a mimi mac?
    Cheers. Don
No unfortunatley it's too old, you are referring to Target Display Mode which became avialble in 2009, your 2008 needs to have the HD replaced. I'd still do that if everything else is OK or you can simply buy a new MM and display or even a new iMac  or an Apple refurbished iMac to save money.

  • Do I need external hard drive to back up my iMac before update to mountain lion? My is OS 10.6.8

Do I need external hard drive to back up my iMac before update to mountain lion? My is OS 10.6.8.

First, repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Second, make a bootable backup to an external drive using the Restore option of Disk Utility:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Third, purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Be sure you meet the requirements for Mountain Lion:
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

My contacts have been transferred from my iPhone5 to iPhone6 . I now need to back them up in a new PC in a separate address book How can I do it without adding all contacts from Outlook when I synch  back from iTunes ?

From the OP: "My old computer got a virus and when that happened all my music was lost. "
They don't have the music on their computer so they cannot transfer the iTunes folder, from the computer to their iPod and then to the new computer. And if they try to enable disk use on the iPod it will erase all the music that is on it. The method you cited is moving the files in a data format using the iPod as a flash drive. It doesn't work if they are in music format. That is why I suggested Yamipod.

I created a movie in imovie and burned it to -R disk on my 2010 imac. It plays well there. But when I tried to play it in my 2008 macbook pro it would not play. what I got was two folder icons that said audio and visual and when i clicked on those it brought up several lines I couldn't understand. I did get the audio but not the video.
Apple said the Pro was beyond applecare which I knew but I thought it was iLife issue. They said it was not---that it was a Pro issue. I heard something about needing download of VLC and something about a codex. Not having much of an idea of what I was doing I downloaded a VLC thing and the disk played audio and video. Once. Today it will not play. So that is where I am stuck. Can anyone help please?

    Hi
Does the DVD play on a standard DVD-player ?
If so - then the Pro doesn't need anything. Most probably the problem is due to
    • Cheap brand of DVD used - Memorex and NoName known problem makers - I use Verbatim (only)
    • Burn Speed not set down - I do to x2 - and to select BEST is not a good choice at all as this will be same as Highest = Lot's of burn errors
If DVD plays OK on the other Mac - make a Copy BY USING Disk Util tool and do not forget to set down the Burn Speed !

  • The WiFi on my iPhone 4s will not turn on. I need to back up to iCloud in order to replace the phone. A worker at the Apple Store said that if I connected my phone to the computer, then I could back up to iCloud but it doesn't work!

Last weekend I went to the Apple store to replace my phone because the WiFi on my phone is nonfunctional. I need to back up to iCloud before I can replace my phone because I have information on there that needs to be saved. The worker at the Apple store said that, since I cannot connect to WiFi, I needed to plug my phone into my computer in order to back up. I went into iTunes and turned iCloud on, but my phone still will not back up to iCloud. So, I need to know exactly how to back up my iPhone to iCloud without WiFi?

should I restore from an old icloud back up from last month and see if my wifi comes on then?
Unfortunately, you can't restore an iCloud backup without using wifi so that isn't an option.

  • I need to back up and sync multiple iPhones to a single iMac.  Each iPhone has a separate Apple ID and the data from each iPhone needs to be backed up separately from the others.  How can I do this without getting all of the contacts, etc. mixed? Tnx

  • Need assistance creating applications with superseedence to uninstall Office 2010, Lync 2010 and then install Office 365 click to run 2013

We are getting ready in a few months to uninstall our locally installed Office 2010 and head to the cloud with Office 365 2013. I have created applications to uninstall Office 2010 and Lync 2010 and then added them to the supersedence tab for Office 365
office 2013 click to run with appv5.
When deploying the office 365 2013 application it does not uninstall office 2010 or lync 2010 with the supersedence.  I am able to manually uninstall Office 2010 and Lync 2010 with the command lines I am using in the applications.
The application uninstall for Office 2010 is:
The application uninstall is an exe so I created an application, created a deployment type with the location of our Office 2010 admin point, installation program and uninstall program are set with the same line as I have tried to deploy it separately and
also as a supersedence in the Office 365 application setup.exe /uninstall ProPlus /config "\\sccmserver\share\Office2010\ProPlus.ww\silentuninstallconfig.xml.  The silentuninstallconfig.xml was created from the original config.xml file and edited
    to these settings:<Configuration Product="ProPlus">
     <Display Level="none" CompletionNotice="NO" SuppressModal="yes" AcceptEula="yes" />
     <Setting Id="Reboot" Value="Never" />
     <Setting Id="SETUP_REBOOT" Value="NEVER" />
     <OptionState Id="ProductFiles" State="Local" Children="force" />
     </Configuration>
The detection method is the folder path to see that office 14 exists.  When I deploy this the machines finish with success showing this exists, but does not uninstall Office 2010.
running the command line manually mapped to this location on a machine uninstalls office 2010 without issue.
    Lync 2010 uninstall:
Lync is an exe so I am using the LyncSetup.exe /silent /uninstall.  The application is in the supersedence tab for Office 365 2013. This never installs.  If I create a softare distribution and deploy it on its own it uninstalls without issue.
We are going to use Lync 2013 with our office 365 2013 installation so we need to uninstall this.  The detection method for lync is file system folder and the Microsoft lync folder for detection.
MS Office 15 (Office 365) was created with the click to run tool.  I can install this with the application I created using the appv5 package created with the click to run tool.  The issue is we need Office 2010 and Lync 2010 uninstalled first.
Having both versions of Office installed in test has caused issues where Office 15 365 will not list in add and remove programs and cannot be uninstalled even with the fix it article to remove office 2013.
I have looked at many articles and so far it is not working for us.  Any help appreciated to get us to the cloud.
    Thanks,
    Brit

The applications I have for uninstall of office 2010 and Lync 2010 for some reason do not uninstall. Manually testing the command lines they do.  The detection method seems to be hanging things up.  On the lync uninstall detection method I have
the setting type of file system, type folder, path c:\program files\ folder name Microsoft Lync.
I highly recommend using something other than a file/folder "exists" detection method. Installers are constantly leaving things behind due to environmental inconsistencies. It may leave files/folders behind with a schedule to delete files on next reboot.
These things are unpredictable and very hard to use. I just use the "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall" Registry location. There you can actually key off the "Product Version" DWORD as well which gives you an even more accurate method
to determine if the application you are trying to deploy (or expect to exist) is truly there. This, of course, being if you are not using an MSI. If you have MSI technology ALWAYS use the product code unless the person writing the MSI chooses to use the same
product code for every version release of their product. In which case, Use the registry method.
As far as getting the supersedence and everything working. You need to start from the basics. Create Applications for all of the apps you want to remove. Make sure they install and uninstall properly (seems like overkill but it isn't that hard). Once you
have working install/uninstall applications then you can easily apply supersedence to your new applications with a setting of Uninstall on the superseded apps you should have no problem getting rid of them. I have done this for numerous things.
For example, I did this with Cisco Jabber to replace older versions of jabber, older versions of cisco unified personal communicator and lync and OSC. All of these replaced versions had to have an Application but once it was in it took two seconds to apply
all the supersedence rules and now I know when I push that software out no matter version is running on any machine it will pull all the old apps off and put the new one on.
