Need to be online to watch rented iTunes movie?

After I've downloaded a rented movie to my computer, is it necessary to be online to watch it?
I'd like to watch it on a plane.
thanks!

You do not have to be online.

  • IPhone restarting when watching Rented iTunes movies!

As the title of the thread says, my iPhone restarts whenever I try and watch Rented iTunes movies on it.
And it is just rented movies that cause the issue, if I rip a DVD and convert to iPhone friendly it plays all the way through quite happily. But with the rented ones, they play for about 7 mins before the iphone restarts.
Has anyone else had this problem?

have you taken any troubleshooting steps? (reset, restore, resync....etc).
mine was restarting itself randomly in ANY application. even after a restore (as a new phone), it did it as i was redoing all my settings. long story short, my phone was ultimately replaced by apple.

  • Watching Rented iTunes Movies in Locations with No Internet Access

After I rent/download movies from iTunes onto my MacBook Pro, will I be able to access/watch those movies if I bring my laptop to a location that has no Internet access (no hotspot, no wi-fi, no nothing)? I know the rentals are good for 30 days and I have 24 hours to finish a movie once I start it, but I'm not sure if I need to have continuous Internet access to watch them even after I rent them.

You only need an internet connection if you're going to transfer the rental from your computer to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod.  You can watch it without internet access, like in an airplane without WiFi.

  • Watch rented iTunes movies on apple tv 2

Is it possible to rent a movie via iTunes on the iPad and then watch on apple tv 2? The movie doesn't show up under rented movies on the apple tv and AirPlay mirroring won't work. Purchased movies sync to all devices, why not rented movies?

The limited number of rentals I've tried to use from my iPad via AirPlay have all worked, but I appreciate others have not found this.
Only making rentals on a computer will allow you to transfer them to another device.

  • HT1657 can i watch rented itune movies on ipad while flying?

Basically heading to Hawaii, woulld prefer not to carry bulky lap top and utilize the benefits of an iPad.  Is it possible to rent, not buy HD movies from iTunes and have them avaialble to watch while flying overseas?  thanks.

There are films available to rent in the iTune store, but it's the film studio's choice as to whether a particular film is available as a rental, and if it is whether it's in HD and/or SD.
As lomg as the film has been fully downloaded (or synced) to the iPad's Videos app then you should be able to watch it whilst offline.

  • HT1657 once you download a movie do you need to be online to watch it?

once you download a movie, do you need to be online to watch it?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
From my own personal experience, I have found that when I turn off the Wi-Fi on my Wi-Fi only iPad, I am still able to play rented movies on it. I have tried this perhaps four or five times and in each case, this has been the result. I have also noted that other users have had the same experience as I.
However saying that I have noted a small number of users that have stated they are unable to view rented movies without an Internet connection. This knowledge base article from Apple, also suggests that an Internet connection is required.

It's right at an hour (consistently), but the computer goes to sleep prior to that. It's as if iTunes goes to sleep. Also, it wasn't always this way. Originally, the movies played through without interruption. At some point, I guess a setting was changed, and now I only get an hour. Also. My energy settings are set to go to sleep at 10 minutes.

  • Can I watch a rented iTunes movie on my MacBook Pro on an airplane?

I will be flying tomorrow and was wondering if I can watch a rented iTunes movie on my MacBook Pro on the airplane. I have read if it is set in airplane mode that I can, but I want to be sure and was also wondering, if I can, do I have to watch it through a special app besides itunes. Any help or information would be great. Thanks!

    Airplane mode?  What's that?
For the record, my Macbook Pro has been on many flights for the past 5 years and not once have I heard the pilot announce that everyone put all computers on airplane mode?

  • Backing Up Rented iTunes Movies?

Thanks in advance for your help
Is there any way to back up rented iTunes movies. I need to re-install my OS, and I have about 4 rented movies that I don't have time to watch right now, is there any way to back them up before I do my re-install? Also, do I need to Deauthorize iTunes then re-authorize iTunes after my OS re-install?
    Thanks for your help,
    Scott

    Hi Chris
I'm catching a running theme here voiced by both you and Niel, that it probably won't work. Between yours and his excellent rankings and 92,000+ posts, I think I'll trust yous
I do have one suspicion left of what may be causing my BSOD, and will disable it in MSCONFIG and see if that helps, so hopefully I can watch the movies at my leisure.
Thanks again for your help, and I will consider this question answered.

  • Can I watch an iTunes movie rental on a TV connected via mini displayport?

I'm not sure if there's been any headway with this, but I've got a mini displayport to HDMI adaptor on the way that I'm going to use to connect my MacBook Pro to my HDTV, effectively using the TV as an external monitor.
And of course, I want to watch some iTunes movie rentals on the TV instead of my laptop, but digging around the internet has shown that I might be facing an issue relating to the HDCP standard that would prevent me from being able to use my TV in this manner.
Is this still an issue? I have a fall 2009 MacBook Pro, which may be important, as I've read that Apple modified the mini displayport on the MacBooks in 2010.
Other than renting a movie as a sort of guinea pig with the possibility of being shot down and wasting my money, is there any way to know if this is going to work? Or is it simply a fact that any monitor/TV connected to my MacBook through the mini displayport is incompatible with HDCP, and I'm totally out of luck?
(Which, FYI Apple, is utter horse **** and is absolutely counter-productive to the notion of encouraging me to pay for digital entertainment.)
    What are your thoughts, folks?

If your HDTV is HDCP compliant, you probably will have no problems. But you might want to read this information which while written a while back still, to the best of my knowledge, applies:
    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/16488
HDCP compliance is, from what I've read, rather a "rubber ruler" so even if your TV lists as being HDCP, it might or might not work correctly with your Mac. Testing with one movie first might avoid an expensive surprise.
As to your complaint to Apple, it probably wasn't up to Apple but instead was forced on them as part of the conditions by the content owners for licensing movies and shows to the iTunes Store. But feel free to comment to Apple via their feedback pages:

How do I watch my iTunes movies, tv shows on my mac without having to download them all to my HD?  I really want my Mac to function like my Apple TV since I have just moved and don't have my TV for another few weeks. Since I purchased my three Apple TV. I have had no need to download any of my movies to my Mac.  Which has been great.  However, I remember that I used to now have to do this... or did I?  I am just frustrated because I want to stream all this stuff vice haveing to waiting for it all to download fill up my Mac's HD and then just delete. Someone help please?

Play the movie in iTunes to stream it.

  • Increase volume of rented iTunes movies?

I have difficulty with the volume level being too low on rented iTunes movies.  I have tried the following setups with my first generation iPad:
    1) Apple HDMI adapter -> HDMI cable to Mitsubishi EW230U-ST projector; Creative T-40 speakers plugged into mini-stereo jack of projector; volume turned to max on all devices.  This produces speaker volume that is not adequate for a large room.
    2) Same as #1, but instead run the Creative speakers directly from the headphone jack of the iPad.  Volume similarly inadequate.
    3) Same as #1 or #2, but insert FiiO E5 Headphone Amplifier into mini-stereo chain going to Creative T-40 speakers.  This produces adequate volume, though to my ears, the quality is diminished somewhat.  I'm not fond on this approach, because the FiiO uses a built-in battery which might fail without warning during the showing of a movie.
What would be ideal would be a way to increase the volume going out the headphone jack of the iPad.  I understand that this is deliberately limited to protect the hearing of those using headphones.  Alternatively, increasing the volume going over HDMI would likely help - unless the projector's mini-stereo jack is similarly being limited for headphone reasons (less likely, since projectors are usually hooked to external speakers).
So ... is there any way to make the iPad output louder sound with rented movies?  Jail-breaking solutions are probably not appropriate, as I don't want to risk my ATT unlimited data plan.
I should say that if I just play a DVD instead of using the iPad, the sound level from the DVD player's stereo jack is strong enough for the Creative T-40 speakers to rock the room.
If I could solve this problem, I would rent a lot more iTunes movies, as it is the easiest way to get a movie.

I followed your procedure and did some testing.  By setting the volume slider to +100%, the movie was louder on my Mac.
I then transferred the movie to my iPad and took my equipment to the facility where I play movies. I didn't have a pristine rental copy to test against, so I used my own DVD copy of the movie.  This is what I found:
    A) The best and strongest sound was when the the T40 speakers were directly connected to the DVD player's RCA sound jacks and the video was coming thru the hdmi to the projector.
    B) The worst (quietest) sound was when the speakers took their input from the mini-stereo jack of the projector, with the video and sound coming from the dvd player thru hdmi.
    C) I compared this with the +100% sound-increased movie rental running on my iPad, with hdmi connection to the projector and sound coming from the mini-stereo jack of the projector to the T40 speakers.  This was definitely much louder than "B" above.  So I can safely say that the sound boost performed on the rental movie on my Mac did copy over to the iPad.
    D) Unfortunately, even "C" above is not loud enough for this room.  But if I added the FiiO amp to "C", then there was plenty of sound - though not as pleasant (or simple) as "A" above.
I wonder if there is some way to get more than the +100% sound boost in iTunes?
I think it is unfortunate that renting a digital movie is fraught with such difficulty. It should be possible to adjust the sound as needed - and preferably on the iPad!  Otherwise, we are just going to keep renting DVDs.

  • Apple TV 1st generation- can't seem to transfer rented Itune movies from my Mac to the Apple TV

Apple TV 1st generation- can't seem to transfer rented Itune movies from my Mac to the Apple TV

You need to establish if it was 1080p or 720p HD you downloaded.
If it's 1080p it will not play at all on AppleTV1 - the hardware is not powerful enough to decode 1080p h264 (or 720p above 25fps).  When AppleTv1 came out most items were SD only and with time more 720p HD stuff became available.  1080p content cm after AppleTV 1 and 2 were replaced by AppleTV 3.
AppleTV2 can process but not display 1080p - it is stuck to 720p output.
AppleTV1 could only process 720p max, but could always upscale on output to 1080p!
Your iTunes Preference should determine what quality you are downloading/renting.
