Need to be within 3 feet of base station!

I have just had broadband put in to my house and we have a Belkin High-Speed Mode Wireless G Router. Both my house mates, who are using Windows laptops are able to use wireless perfectly. However, my iBook G4 will only detect the base station if it is within a metre of it.
It is unlikely to be a problem with the base station, as other laptops work fine with it. But on my computer, Network prefs; airport setup and network diagnostics all report no problem with the Airport Extreme card that I installed last week.
Belkin say that the problem is with my iBook, as the PCs are working fine. But the support guy doesn't know Macs and couldn't help!

I have exactly the same problem with a new iMac G5 with Airport Extreme card. I have the Belkin ADSL Modem with Wireless G Router which works perfectly with existing G3 ibook with airport card.
The router is upstairs and the imac is downstairs; it finds no wireless signal at all, although the ibook sitting on the same table finds a strong signal and connects with no problem.
I tried moving the Imac within a few feet of the router and then it grudgingly found a signal, although still very poor. However, I want the iMac downstairs and connected wirelessly.
I have tried the same as you and diagnostics work out fine. Have also tried reinserting the antenna and Airport card several times but with no success. Could this be an issue between Airport Extreme and the Belkin Router?
I have read somewhere that Airport Extreme may be affected by installation of more than 1 GB memory; could this be another possible explanation?
Any help very welcome!

  • Need some help settin' up an Airport base station for dialup

Afternoon, all. As the handle says, I'm a newbie and I need some LGI about setting up an Airport base station to dial out. I just got a Macbook 2.0 yesterday, and I'm still trying to deal with the setup. This model has the 10.5 OS.
The Airport I'm using is not the square unit now available. This particular unit is a circular base with a conical shape. I got this model because it has the connection for a standard telephone connector. It's also 'sposed to have a built-in modem.
I have gotten the computer to connect to the base station wirelessly, but I am having trouble setting things up to get the modem to dial out to my ISP (netscape.)
Any assistance or walk-throughs would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Hello newbietoapple. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Perform a "hard" reset of the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS)
    o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451)
    Setup the AEBS
Either connect to the AEBS's wireless network or connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility, check these settings:
    AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Create a closed network (unchecked)
    o Wireless Security: Not enabled
    o Channel: Automatic
    o Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
    Internet tab
    o Connect Using: Modem (V.90)
    Network tab
    o Distribute IP addresses (checked)
o Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)

  • Do I need an 'apple airport base station' to use the internet on my macbook?

I'm considering getting a refurbished Macbook Air next week, which will be my first Mac computer ever, and I was watching some of the introduction videos.
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#wirelessbasics
'Wireless Basics' - At about 0:55 seconds in, it says something about needing what sounds like an 'apple airport base station' to connect my Macbook to the internet here in my home. I currently have an HP laptop that easily connects to our Wi-Fi. I actually need some additional 'apple airport base station' thing to connect to the internet? I can't just connect like our Wi-Fi PC laptops do? Tell me I'm hearing this wrong, because I can't afford some additional 'base station' on top of an expensive Macbook, refurbished or not.

Any WiFI basestation should work but there are two caveats. First, configuring non-Apple basestations is more confusing for newbs than the AirPort is. Second, upgrading firmware can be a real pain for some 3rd party bases - they don't tend to let users know the updates exist and many require a PC to install.

  • External Attenna on my Airport Extreme Base Station...

I need to increase the range of my base station.
I have it located in the house and I have a home office in a shed in the back yard about 50 feet away.
I get about two bars. My base station has an external attenna jack -- so I'm not looking at a hack.
Just something to plug in and get full bars in the shed.
I've looked at the Dr. Botts. Kind of pricey. So I wanted to get some opinions.
    Does the Bott device work?
I noticed Hawking Technology has a Hi-Gain 7dBi Omni-Directional Antenna for Apple Airport Extreme, 802.11g. Runs around 40 bucks. Half what the Bott costs.
    Do these work?
Mind you I'm not looking to double or triple my range. Just get a full signal at 50 feet with two walls in between the computer and base station. I'm getting two bars now so I'm hoping the Hawking will do the trick.
    Any other options?

Bought a dr.bott-antenna some years ago (got it for 1/2 price at the SF Applestore since the box was opened), but it didn't make a great difference really.
My general advice is to first try and find a better spot to place the antenna before spending 40 - 100 $ on an external antenna.
Or you can build your own antenna, there is plenty of information on how to build antennas on the net.

  • Adding password to old Airport Base Station.

I need to password protect the old Airport Base Station (dual ethernet). I have tried the support documents but it did not work. I have an express plugged in and my Airport Utility only sees that one. I have tried plugging the old base station into the iMac with an ethernet cable but then got stuck.
I'm using an iMac with OSX 10.5.4.
    Any help?
    Thanks.

Ok, the version you just downloaded should be compatible with both Tiger and Leopard. It's primary purpose is for administrating the old 802.11b AirPort Base Stations, both the Snow and the Graphite. The new AirPort Utility replaces both the AirPort Admin Utility and the AirPort Setup Assistant. So between the AirPort Utility and AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow, you should be able to administer any of the AirPorts.
Do you still happen to have the old AirPort Admin Utility or AirPort Setup Assistant installed on your Mac? If so, this might be the reason for the error message.

  • Can any one offer advice,,,Wireless routers/base stations ?

I have iMac G5 (Tiger 10.4) I am considering going wireless- but know very little. ( My ISP is Wanadoo) If I look to getting a router from Wanadoo, or separate source, what should I be aware of in terms of any 'extras' needed.
Does expenceof the Airport Extreme Base station offer an easier way (ie is it plug /play) or do you need a degree to install and operate. Your views and advice of how to about this (and possible economic outlets) would be most appreciated....Cheers loons

Oh also on a site note: Normaly if you are behind a router / NAT the IP's you have a private non routable IPs. Something like 192.168.1.xxx or 192.168.2.xxx. There are a few others.
Anyhow your router is configured to run as a DHCP server for your local network. Anyhow nothing stops you from assigning static non routable IPs to your computers. You can even mix and match...
For example in my network every computer with a server role has a static IP in the range from 192.168.2.10 to 192.168.2.49. The router is configured to assign IP addresses to computers that do not have a static one from 192.168.2.50 to 192.168.2.100.
So if my notebook roams arround it uses DHCP, if friends bring their PC for a LAN party they get a dynamic IP for the time they stay while I can access the servers over a static IP.
This of cause has nothing to do with your external IP that you get most likely over DHCP from your ISP and that can change.

  • Connecting to AE Base Station upon waking iMac

I have the Airport Extreme (UFO looking one). I have a new 27" iMac and MacBook and at times they will not connect to the wireless network. It generally occurs when I wake either one up. Generally, I can turn off the Airport card and back on and it will reconnect. Other times, I need to unplug the power from the base station and plug back in. Any suggestions?

So I downgraded the firmware to 5.5.1 and have not had to reset the AE once.

  • How to set up wireless keyboards to work on 2 computers within 3 feet of one another

We work close together -- within 3 feet and need to use wireless keyboards if possible. One computer will recognize
the Apple wireless keyboard but my laptop will not recognize either of the 2 Apple wireless keyboards we own. I have changed
batteries, made sure Bluetooth is on and there is no other interference. Appreciate any help.

If the KB is paired with something, it needs to be deleted from that system before it can pair with something else. BT devices may only pair with one thing at a time.

  • When my daughter connects to our home wifi she has to be within 5 feet of the modem, once she moves upstairs she loses wifi connection and then when choosing the network, it can't find our wifi network?

When my daughter tries to connect to our home wifi, she has to be in the basement within 5 feet of our modem.  Once she comes upstairs she loses the connection.  All of our other devices connect to the wifi on all levels of our house, including her Dad who also got an iphone 4 and her ipod works as well as her brother's ipod and my blackberry.  I have tried resetting the network settings to no avail. I have already had our modem rebooted through our internet provider so I know the signal is good (as well as all other devices connect to wifi) I am losing sleep over this and she is quite frustrated so any help would be appreciated.  I'm starting to wonder if it's a defect in her phone???

Is her iPhone in a case by any chance?  If so, remove the case and try again.  How does her iPhone work in free Wi-Fi locations?
    Try resetting the iPhone...
Press and hold the Home and On/Off buttons simultaneously until you see the Apple logo, then release.  This may take up to 10 seconds.  This is the equivalent of a re-boot and you will not lose any data.
If none of the above work take it to an Apple store or AASP for evaluation.  She will not be charged folr this and they will suggest a solution if there is a fault.

  • I told my wireless network to forget two airport expresses so that I could rename them.  Now the network does not see them even when plugged in about 10 feet away from the airport extreme base station.  Does "forget" mean forever?  How to reset?

I told my wireless network to forget two airport expresses 1 1st gen, 1 2nd gen so that I could rename them.  Now the network does not see them even when plugged in about 10 feet away from the airport extreme base station.  The network does recognize a totally new 2nd gen express.  Does "forget" mean forever?  How to reset?

The network does recognize a totally new 2nd gen express.
Then, it sounds like you have already reset the 2nd Gen Express, and now you need to set it up again, like you did the first time. Only, this time, assign the device name that you want to the AirPort Express.
Do NOT use the name that Apple suggests.....which will be something goofy like........Sueswimsf's Red Apple AirPort Express
    Assign a simple name.....something like     2ndGenExpress

  • I recently purchased the Apple Airport Extreme Base Station so that I can have wireless, my question is: so I need anything else so that my guests can have internet access via my router?

Hello Anyone and Everyone who can answer my question,
I would like to be able to offer wireless access to the internet for my guest's who use my apartment above my garage that is about 75 feet away from my house/computer. I have a MacBook Pro and have satellite internet service through an ehternet connection. I recently purchased an Apple Extreme Base Station with simultanious Dual-Band (MC34OLL/A), that is in the process of being shipped as I type, and am wondering if I need anything else to install in the apartment for the wireless to work with the Apple Extreme Base Station? Thank you for any help in this matter.
    Sincerely,
    Lizzy

In AirPort Utility, enable the guest network by selecting your Extreme, then the Edit button, then the Wireless tab, then check the box for "Enable Guest Network":

  • Can there be a hardware issue on the iPad that causes you to unable to join wifi networks or only if you are within 5 feet of routers?

I used to be able to connect my iPad to my house wifi network walking all over my house then one day it stopped.  When i tried to connect to my network I would get an message saying "Unable to Join network".  I found that if i was within 5 feet of my router it would connect and work just fine.  At the same time I tried it at multiple other networks that I have before (girlfriends and other friends houses) and could not connect with same issue.  Only place I can connect is my work wifi.
Can connect to wifi with my iPhone with no issues
I have reset my network connections

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
Try This - Renew IP Address:
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list

  • Do I need to add Base Station MAC address to list?

Hi, If I choose to use MAC address filtering on my Airport Extreme Time Capsule, do I need to add the wireless MAC address of the Base Station to the list of allowed MAC addresses???  I'd feel real bad if I set up a list, didn't include the base station's MAC address and then could never get in to the network again because I, in effect, locked myself out???  I doubt that address needs to be included but I would like some feedback on that.
Second, does the one MAC address filter list apply to the Guest Network as well if I should choose to turn it on???  If that was the case, I would just turn off MAC address filtering why guests were present.
    thanks..  bob

If I choose to use MAC address filtering on my Airport Extreme Time Capsule, do I need to add the wireless MAC address of the Base Station to the list of allowed MAC addresses???
No. Timed Access would be for wireless devices....computers, mobile devices, printer, etc., that are connecting to the Time Capsule. The Time Capsule does not connect to itself in this regard.
I'd feel real bad if I set up a list, didn't include the base station's MAC address and then could never get in to the network again because I, in effect, locked myself out???
Sometimes, users lock themselves out by mistake by entering incorrect times for devices to connect, and they often forget that they can connect to the base station using an Ethernet connection and get back in that way.....since Timed Access only applies to devices that connect using wireless.
does the one MAC address filter list apply to the Guest Network as well if I should choose to turn it on???
    Yes

  • Do I need a separate base station to stream to a AX

I have an Intel Imac and I want to stream airtunes to an AX.
I do not currently have a wireless network. My Imac is connected to the internet directly through an ethernet cable from my dsl modem.
Can I stream just by connecting the AX to my stereo and turning the airport in the imac on, or do I need a separate wireless router first. The AX documentation makes it look like I need another AX or AE that I would use as a base station?

AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - iTunes Setup
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
    o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
    o Set time automatically: (unchecked)

o Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
    o Network Name: <enter a name or leave default>
    o Radio Mode: 802.11n (b/g compatible)
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
    o Channel: Automatic
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)
