Need to capture dvd footage with great quality. dvdxdvpro doesn't do it.

hi
I have lots of noncopyright footage from dvd's that I need to convert for fcp, yet when I use dvd.dvpro the quality is not as good. Is there a better way I can do this and maintain the quality of the original video? Would it work better if I just hooked up the dvd player to a camcorder and recorded it that way? How about the canopus media converter? Would that be better?

as posted several times before; the dvd is where your quality problem comes from.
now as for chosing between dvdxdv and streamclip;
dvdxdv - afaik - only converts to dv, adding dv compression on top of mpeg2 compression.
mpeg streamclip lets you export into a range of formats, from original m2v (wihtout recompression) to any format quicktime supports. in this case, you might want to compare exporting to for example quicktime animation compression. yes this will create gigantic files that are too "loose" a fit for the heavily compressed m2v video from the dvd, but at least it will avoid adding another layer of compression.
in general; if all you need to do is straight cuts, avoid any conversion and try to work with the m2v files
that's about the best you can do
hope this helps

Hi apple users, I am in need of your expertise. I have a mov file and mp4 file which I need converted to DVD. However IDVD quality is terrible and wondering if anyone can help!?
I created project in iMovie then exported it to MP4 and also MOV file at highest definition possible + I added it to iDVD and had a number issues about encoding errors regarding the mp4 file. MOV worked but the quality was terrible.....
    MOV file is as follows:
    4.08GB
    Codecs: H.264, ACC
    Colour Profile: HD (1-1-1)
    Dimensions: 1920 x 1080
    Duration: 12:33
    Audio Channels: 2
    MP4 File is as follows:
    3.02GB
    Codecs: H.264, ACC
    Colour Profile: HD (1-1-1)
    Dimensions: 1280 x 720
    Duration: 12:33
    Audio Channels: 6
I have a MacBook Pro using the Yosemite system upgrade.
I have updated iDVD and iMovie.
I even bought the iSkysoft app from the mac store and that was terrible too.
PLEASE HELP i am getting desperate and about to launch this macbook into the air

First of all, Hunt--thanks for responding!
"First, where are you playing the MPEG-2, that you see that jitter?"
On both a MacBook Pro, an Acer laptop and my Mac Tower. I would love to think that it is a problem with the playback system, and that if I merely send the file off to the duplicator they won't have the same problem. Maybe that is the case...I don't know if I have a choice rather than sending it off to see. But it happens in the same spots, in the same way, on all three of the players so I'm a little reluctant to have faith.
"Another thing that can cause jitter in an MPEG-2 is the Bit-Rate - higher the Bit-Rate, the better the quality, but the larger the file. For a DVD, one is limited by the total Bit-Rate (both Audio & Video), but with longer prodcutions, some users choose too low a Bit-Rate. If this is the issue, one would need to go back to the original Project and do a new Export/Share."
Of course, but in the case there is no more 'original project.' It is gone like the wind, stolen along with his computer and backups.
I think I am stuck using one of two files as my master: a DVD he burned where I only see the stutter/vibration/jitter once, or the mpeg2 file where I see it three times. Hopefully, the duplication house can rip if off of one of them and not see the jitter. I know that in audio, my personal filed, you can do a lot to enhance already existing sound--EQ, compression, tape saturation emulation software, etc. I guess I'm hoping there is some kind of analog to the video world that address jitter after a source has been printed--if indeed the source has been printed to be jittery.
    Thanks,

  • Capturing HD footage with the Sony J-H3

I'm trying to capture 1080i/59.94 footage with a Sony J-H3 through firewire. I edited the capture preset for "DVCPRO HD - 1080i60 48 kHz" to have 59.94 FPS, 100% quality, and three different compression settings: none, uncompressed 10-Bit 4:2:2, and DVCPRO HD 1080i60. All of them were soft & pixellated. The DVCPRO HD 1080i60 setting was probably the worst, but the other two weren't much better. What kind of capture settings do I need to get nice crisp HD movs?

Not as HD, no. DVCPRO HD is a Panasonic format, and only the DVCPRO HD decks output that format via firewire. Sony's firewire HD format is HDV, but that is COMPLETELY different than HDCAM. No...if you look at the back of the deck, you will note that in that area of connections, it specifically states "DV."

  • How to make a 2 hour long dvd? With highest quality? PE12

I made a two hour long event which I plan on burning into a dvd with the highest quality. It's avchd files. I want to burn it in h.264 1920x1080i pal dolby. I then tried to export the file onto my computer but it showed the file size to be 36,000 which is about 35 gb. I need to know if I export it directly to a dvd, will the size be smaller or the same. If it will be a large 35 gb then I guess I'll need a bigger dvd gb size which all I can find is blu-ray single layers, but I only find 25gb, also do this recordable disks be allowed to play in any dvd player or just blu-ray? Any good cites to buy them cheap? Here are the pictures, first one is where it shows I want to export it to my computer, and the second is to dvd, (DVD is not put in.)

Please excuse if I go over some things that you aleady know, but again I do not want to take anything for granted that would prevent us from moving forward on your project.
    When you wrote
When I go to Blu-Ray on the Status it says No Burners detected, and with AVCHD it says Busy.
    1. Does your burn dialog have a field named burner location:? If so, does your Blu-ray burner show up as a choice in its drop down list?
    2. And, with that "...with AVCHD it says Busy", have you selected Publish+Share/Disc/AVCHD disc and inserted a Blu-ray disc instead of a DVD disc, when you get the Busy message? The choice of Blu-ray is a Blu-ray disc; the choice for AVCHD is only a DVD disc. So, please clarify that point.
    3. Have you tried Publish+Share/Disc/AVCHD disc with a DVD double layer single sided disc?
    4. As a note..the maximum bitrate for burn to DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc 4.7 GB/120 minutes and 8.5 GB/240 minutes is the same, that is 8.00 Mbps. Whereas, the maximum bitrate is much higher for the AVCHD burn to DVD disc and the Blu-ray burn to Blu-ray disc (about 15.74 to 15.50 Mbps for AVCHD DVD, and about 20.19 to 24.0 Mbps for Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc. More details on the exact values if needed.
What is the bitrate of the AVCHD file that you have imported to the Timeline? See if you agree...if the source has a higher bitrate than the export bitrate, would not you expect smaller file size for the export? And if the source has a lower bitrate than the export bitrate, would not you expect a larger file size for export?
Do some mini tests runs to prove or disprove that. Look at the Space Required and Bitrate reading in the burn dialog when you have a given disc in the burner tray.
    Please review.
    Thanks.

Do you have the equipment that will play back AVCHD DVD as well as Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc?

  • Unable to capture HDV footage with FCP 5.1

I've captured HD footage onto my old computer (10.4.11) without any problem but now I'm trying on my new one and it doesn't want to know.
First off there was a problem with the Firewire port ejecting my hard drives randomly so I took it to be repaired and they replaced the logic board and the port works fine.
I've looked at all the posts I could find, I've trashed my preferences, reinstalled Final Cut Studio ( after uninstalling then updating the software). I've made sure the camera is set to HDV playback rather than auto and that the iLink HDV/DV conversion is off. I've tried all the easy setups and all the custom ones I could think of but still FCP (5.1.4) won't allow me to capture. On some settings I have had device control but no image, on others it said the camera isn't connected. The only way I've captured footage is by using the HDV Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 which works fine.
The camera is a Sony HDR-HC7 connected directly to the iMac with a Firewire 800 / iLink cable or daisy chained through my external hard drive with a 400 / iLink cable (neither of which makes any difference) I can also capture SD footage from both the HDV and a Panasonic SD camera when in DV-PAL setup. The HDV camera also shows up as connected in the system profiler.
This is driving me nuts so any help would be appreciated and if there's any other info I can help with to make this clearer let me know.

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who was having the same problem as you. Although you say the camera playback is set properly, please recheck this. go into your camera's playback menu>menu>standard set>VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your firewire from the camera. Make sure camera is set to HDV NOT auto. replace firewire cable. Now open FCP. Go in Audio/video settings>A/V devices (farthest tab on right). In box for playback edit to tape different from video output (make sure it's checked) mirrored (checked) Video playback 1080i50, Audio HDV. I hope that works now.

  • Capturing HDV footage with incorrect timecode

Rookie mistake. I started shooting a new project on my brand new canon xh-a1s, and in the excitement I forgot to stripe my first few tapes. And it being a film project I've been constantly using the playback to look at the takes I just did. So what's happened is I don't have a nice clean 0;00;00 to 1;04;00 timecode on all the tapes, rather there are frequent spots on the tapes when it's started a new timecode at 0;00;00. So when I capture my footage into premiere pro cs3, it gets confused and either drastically unsyncs the audio or repeats the same 4 seconds of sound through the whole clip.
Oddly enough when you play the captured footage outside of premiere, in windows media player say, it looks and sounds fine. But premiere chokes on it everytime I import it or capture it.
Right now I've managed to capture successfuly going clip at a time with the capture now function, and staring at the timecode waiting to hit stop just when it gets to a new timecode. Sometimes I hit stop on time and it captures cleanly, sometimes I don't and it doesn't sync or skips the audio. But obviously trying to go through 8 hours of footage this way is an arguous, unreliable, and incredibly time consuming process. Logging clips doesn't work either because it never seems to stop the capture on time to save the clip.
Does anyone have any suggestions as how I can get the audio into premiere properly without doing what I'm doing now?

...or, always look at the timecode display in the viewfinder or the LCD before you press REC.  The nice display will ALWAYS indicate when you've reset the timecode. If the display is 00:00:00.00 or similar and you are NOT the very beginning of the tape, pressing record will start a new time code sequence everytime.
If you have END SEARCH, use it.  this will usually work as long as you haven't removed the tape.  Either way, rewinding the tape until a non-zero timecode appears and then pressing REC works.  The camera will increment the timecode from that value..
I'm not at my editting station, but I seem to remember that PPPro has a capture setting that will cause it to ignore timecode breaks--you then edit out the rough section at each break when editing.  Unless you're going to do something clever like recapturing HDV after capturing SD, you're not going to use the timecode anyway.
Then in the future, always look at the timecode display before you press REC.  There is really no reason to stripe if you always remember this.

  • What's the best setting to save  footage (.mov) to dvd/cd with best quality

Hi, I'm editing a little movie that might be played later on tv/cinema. I 'm trying to keep/burn my footage into a lighter format but I can't guess which setting is the best. Would the setting be good enough? (also do I burn it on a dvd or data cd?...) Is somebody could help me? Thank you, Laurence
(my footage were filmed with a 4 chip camera)

If you have the camera to import into iMovie I don't understand why you can't send it back to tape. That will be the best quality and the fastest time.
If your PowerBook doesn't have a DVD burner you could take the tape and camera to a friend that has a Mac and a DVD burner. Send the file to iMovie and then iDVD for burning.
Once you export to a lower quality QuickTime file some of the quality will be lost forever. The tape would be identical to the iMovie version.
There is no "best" export method because every file is different. I would use Movie to QuickTime movie, sized at 640X480 and select the H.264 video codec and Apple Loseless audio codec set at 48kHz stereo. Use the same frame rate as your source and a bit rate about 2,000.

  • HELP NEEDED CAPTURE DV FOOTAGE WITH HDV VIDEO CAMERA

I'm trying to capture DV video footage I've done years ago with my Sony DCR-HC40E PAl into FCP version 6. with my new camera HDV video Sony HDR-HC7 1080.i/mini dv so I can capture it into FCP but it's jerky, An yone know the setting for both the HDv camera and FCP to get the footage perfect as the rginal video.
    Cheers

From the FCP menu bar: Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup > DV-PAL > OK. (Use DV PAL Anamorphic if you shot wide screen).
Menu bar once more: Sequence > Settings > Set Sequence Preset > OK.
That camera should detect the DV format tape and playback with the correct settings automatically.
All you ned to do is connect it via FireWire and capture.
For everything else, here's the manual for that camera: http://www.docs.sony.com/release/HDRHC5.pdf

  • Capture DVD footage

I am trying to figure out how to capture footage off a DVD I have....
I had 8 mm film transferred to DVD and want to further edit it. But, I can't seem to figure out how to transfer the data from the DVD to my computer to do my editing....
I look at the contents of the DVD and it is a bunch of odd filenames... It is running under a YesVideo programming, it appears from Costco. I had had a Windows-based program on my Windows-based computer that allowed me to capture some video... but, I can't seem to figure it out now on my Mac.

is your DVD a data DVD or a regular DVD (ie does it contain VOB files or not).
If it does, you can follow Applemans Tip linked below

    Hi Perro,
Try telling us all exactly what methods you are performing that is causing you the inability to capture. System specs, capture settings, logging methods, deck connection, etc. Tell us what you are doing and someone might be able to tell what you're doing wrong. This isn't 20 questions here...
Also try a Google search for FCP capture Sony Z1 there's a lot of information out there.

    Hi
We've just setup this system and we are trying to connect the xbox360 HD to FCP 6 through the AJA HD but cannot get any HD video signal in the AJA, the audio is working so there is connection between AJA and the MAC. We've tried it on SD mode from the xbox and the video signal turns on fine but its not what we want, we need to capture 1080i footage. Could it be something wrong with the cables? Well, the xbox is connected to the AJA through component cable (green, blue and red), we tested this connection directly on an HD TV and we can see footage, when connected to the AJA, nothing happens.
Has anyone tried to connect and capture xbox360 HD 1080i through the new AJA HD?

    Hello,

I have a usb cable with the camera. I  would like ot know if captirng via usb is a good option or if there are other better options .

Premiere can not 'capture' footage from any source using a USB connection.
Capture from tape into Premiere requires a firewire connection (DV & HDV).
For your camera, you should use the USB connection to copy the media files
from the camera to your hard drive and then 'import' the footage into Premiere.

Or... take the analogue outs from your dvd player and run them through an

Press play on the DVD player and hit Capture Now.
Not as clean as converting the files but...
