Need to connect MacBook Pro to older TV

I have a MacBook Pro and an "old" Sony Trinitron TV. I want to output the computer to the TV screen. What do I need? Web searches have been confusing and uncooperative.
This is what the back of my TV looks like.

You will need a converter box like this,
http://www.amazon.com/PC-To-TV-Video-Converter/dp/B001CJOLBW/ref=pdcp_e2
...together with a mini-Displayport-to-VGA adapter,
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU1NDg
...and a video cable with one male RCA phono plug on each end, to connect to the yellow ports on the converter box and the TV.
If you want audio to be sent to the TV set's speakers, you will also need an audio cable with a 1/8" stereo headphone plug on one end (to connect to the MBP's headphone port) and two RCA phono plugs on the other (to connect to the red and white audio inputs on the TV).
The video and audio cables can be purchased at any Best Buy, Radio Shack, or
other consumer electronics outlet. Mini-Displayport-to-VGA adapters are also offered by other vendors, often for less than Apple charges.

  • What cables do I need to connect MacBook Pro to the TV VGA port

    Nov 6, 2014 7:01 PM
    Hi,
The HDMI port on my Maxent tv is not working.  I am hoping to connect my MacBook Pro to the TV via the VGA port on the TV to watch Netflix and movies.  What cables do I need that will connect to a VGA port on a TV from my MacBook Pro (2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo)?  And will that cable support audio or will I need a separate audio cable?
    Thanks-
    Sheri
    OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

    Hey Sheri Lynn,
Thanks for the question. Our online store has a helpful tool that should guide you through the process of picking the best adapter for your MacBook model. You can check it out here:
Get help choosing Mac video adapters - Apple Store (U.S.)
    http://store.apple.com/us/mac/mac-accessories/cables/cable-chooser#!
If you are connecting via VGA you will need a separate audio cable if your TV supports it.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

How to connect macbook pro to panasonic hd tv with hdmi cable

    Hi m,
It depends which MPB you have and the inputs on the TV. The following assumes your TV has an HDMI input which will work with a computer.
This is if your MBP is from April 2010 or newer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241
First connect the adapter to the MBP and the HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV, then go to System Preferences > Sound > Output > select HDMI.
Or if your MBP is older than that and you have a Mini DisplayPort, you can use something like this: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/CBLMDPHDMID/
If it's older than that, for video you need a DVI or mini DVI to HDMI or whatever input your TV has. For audio, you need a 3.5mm stereo mini plug to RCA or optical (Toslink), depending on what audio input your TV has.

  • How to connect MacBook Pro 17" Mountain Lion with HDMI port on TV, Panasonic TC-P55ST50

Any experience with cables for connecting MacBook Pro 17" Mountain Lion with HDMI port on TV, Panasonic TC-P55ST50 (or similar)?

It depend upon the model (age) of you MBP.  If you have a Thunderbolt or minidisplay port, then you will need a minidisplay/HDMI adapter.
    eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/CBLMDPHDMI/
Or you can get an all in one:
    http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Premium-DisplayPort-Thunderbolt/dp/B004CADYD O/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1361985588&sr=1-3&keywords=minidisplay+hd mi
If you have an older mac with a DVI port, you will need something like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/DVI-HDMI-Cable-6ft-Male-Male/dp/B0002CZHN6
Note that audio is supported via HDMI for MBPs 2010 and later.  Earlier ones require tapping the audio output port.
    Ciao.

Just migrated using time machine from MacBook Pro to older Macbook. iPhoto 9.4.3 won't open. Tried reinstall - no change. (Mac OS X 10.7.5)

Did you migrate the app from Time Machine? Reinstall it.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
The reference to NovaMedia is that there is the remanant of an older app in there somewhere that won't run on 10.7
    Regards

In the "Arrangement" tab of "Displays" system preference, you can drag the display pictures to match the actual arrangement, drag the menu bar to the other display, or enable mirroring.

  • Update: audio problems connecting macbook pro to insignia TV: resolved

There have been posts from users who have expressed frustration that they cannot get audio when they attempt to connect their macbook pro to an Insignia TV.

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2192206
Insignia customer service also attempts to state that the pre-April 2010 macbook pros cannot get audio output to the TV, because the units are designed to get the audio on the same HDMI and no alternative audio input is available on the TV.
    http://community.insigniaproducts.com/t5/Televisions/Connecting-MacBook-Pro-to-T V/td-p/5564
For the Insignia models (from 2010 onwards and possible some from 2009 as well), there is a simple workaround that does not seem to be published elsewhere on the internet (as far as I can see):
Use the HDMI port 1 only (audio does not work with port 2, port 3 or port 4) to connect your macbook and you will receive 1080p video signal.
Use a mini stereo audio cable (example link below) and connect your macbook audio output to a designated green color coded audio port on the TV located right next to the VGA. You will receive full stereo audio.
Example link for mini stereo audio cable:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00116VJIO

I recently acquired a new Insignia TV and had sound trouble.  I went to Best Buy to inquire about the cable in the link above and the sales manager had doubts.  He recommended a RCA cable with a male connection at both ends.  The RCA jack is on the bottom edge of the TV display next to the VGA connection.  The sound worked perfectly using the RCA cable from the headphone jack on the Mac.  I connected the video with a HDMI adapter from the monitor mirroring port.

Can't connect macbook pro to internet with airport extreme

If you have ethernet still on your MBP plug it in by ethernet and tell me if that works.
Tell me how the Airport is setup.. what broadband modem and router you have.
What OS on the laptop? Yosemite I guess.. since it is the most troublesome.
Did it work before whatever change was made? Has it worked in the past? When did it stop and what did you do that coincided with it stopping?
    Upgrade to Yosemite??

Having the exact same problem with connecting ML and Snow Leopard machines to a Windows 8.1 machine. Oddly enough, connecting and copying to/from works perfectly from a Mavericks machine, despite the problems reported about Mavericks regarding the exact opposite. • How much Ram do I need in a MacBook Pro for Software Engineering?

I plan to buy a new MacBook Pro in the next month for school and hopefully for work. I would like this computer to get me at least 4 years of use. I will be majoring in software engineering. My question is how much ram would I need in a Macbook Pro for software engineering? I am currenty looking at the 15" 2.3ghz base model with 8gb of ram as well as the 15" 2.4ghz base model retina. I really like the retina but its at my max budget. Will the 8gb of ram be enough since it is not upgradable? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am currenty looking at the 15" 2.3ghz base model with 8gb of ram
The MB Pro 15" 2.3Ghz with 8GB of RAM should do the trick.
Save your $$$ on the retina and stick to your budget

  • Connect macbook pro to my mac pro tower

I have a new macbook pro that I was using during an extended vacation. Now I need to go back to using my mac pro and I'd like to grab files as needed off my macbook pro. Currently my system is only using a wireless router with DSL service from Verizon. In the near future I would like to get my 3 main printers onto a wireless print network so both computers can use any of them.
So what's the most cost effective and quick way to get this done? I tried a basic ethernet cable I had and plugged the two machines together and nothing.

In the "Sharing" panels of System Preferences, under Services section of mini-menu bar.
refer to Apple Support article, also available in your "Help"

  • HT201180 What type of Fire Wire cable to use to connect MacBook Pro 2009 to tape-based Sony TRV720 camcorder

What type of Fire Wire cable to use to connect MacBook Pro 2009 to tape-based Sony TRV720 camcorder

USB is the slowest. Firewire is faster. eSata is the fastest (and will be superceded by Thunderbolt).  The old Fire was 4 pin (Firewire 400 and is essentially obsolete), new is 9 pin, Firewire 800.  All of the will transmit data, simply a different speeds.
For eSata connectivity, you MBP must have an express card slot (and the appropriate eSata connection card) and you external enclosure must have an eSata input.  eSata cables will only transmit data, therefor it will require power by Firewire or USB cables.
    Ciao.
