Need to convert 16X9 to 4:3 letterbox for DVD

Hello
Can anyone tell me the settings I need to convert 16X9 to 4:3 letterbox for DVD. I am mixing other 4:3 letterbox content. Evertime I make an mpeg with Quicktime conversion it is squeezed. I want it to be letterbox in 4:3
Thanks in advance.
I am using Final Cut Pro 4.5 and DVD pro 3
Regards,
Dana Gonzales

In addition to using the advice above, make sure in Compressor (or other item you use to encode) that you are using the 16:9 encode ratio. If you are using QT conversion (which it sounds like from Final Cut?) also make sure that ratio is checked. Unlike a 4:3 m2v which will be 720 x 480 when you open it in QT, the 16:9 will be 720 x 404

  • Convert 1:66 to 1:77 for DVD

    Hi there,
    Here's a tricky question, and I'm wondering if anyone's had success (or any advice) as to how to convert video with a 1.66 aspect ratio to a 1.77 aspect ratio for DVD export. Here's what I'm working with...
    I've cut DV non-anamorphic video in Final Cut Pro, and cropped it to its necessary 1.66 aspect ratio. However, I need to make a DVD specifically tailored to widescreen televisions, which have aspect ratios of 1.77:1. I'd like my 1.66:1 video to fill the height of the widescreen television. This means, of course, that there will be thin black bars at the sides of the video on the television, rather than on the top and bottom.
    Has anyone had any success with this and/or any advice of how to go about this? Thanks very much for your help.

    I explained it wrong, Silal... Sorry about that.
    I want the 1.66:1 movie, when played from a DVD, to fill the width of a standard 4:3 television, and the height of a 16:9 widescreen television. This way, it utilizes the maximum space for each type of screen without distortion.
    Now, I can make two versions of the MPEG-2. One version is a standard, 4:3, "letterboxed" MPEG-2, designed for 4:3 televisions (with black bars on the top and bottom). And the other is a 16:9 MPEG-2, where the footage is upsized to fill the height of the 16:9 frame, leaving black bars on the sides.
    The problem is... if a 4:3 MPEG-2 that has been "letterboxed" for 1.66:1 footage is played on a widescreen TV, you get black bars not only on the sides of the image, but above and below it as well. I'm trying to avoid this.
    The only problem with the method I've come up with is that... if I give people an option to choose a "standard" or "widescreen" version of the film with these two different MPEG's, I think that most people would assume that the "standard" version is "pan and scan" and the "widescreen" version is "letterboxed." They'll both TECHNICALLY be "widescreen," since they both conform to the 1.66:1 aspect ratio... They'll just be formatted for two different types of TV's. It's confusing.
    If only there were an option to export a 1.66:1 MPEG-2... Because then the DVD player could do the work for me. It'd automatically fill the width of a standard TV and the height of a widescreen TV. But I don't think that's an option, but maybe I'm wrong.
    Anyway, I'm sorry about the confusion, man... And again, thank you very much for taking the time to answer the question.

  • Best Method for converting a 16x9 video to a letterboxed 4x3 DVD

    I'm not quite sure what would be the best method for this.  My client is using a 4x3 screen and SD projector at a large meeting, and they want me to just create a DVD that is letterboxed.  I have one Premiere CS5 project that's 1920x1080, and another project that's 720x480 widescreen (1.2).  I created a new sequence in both projects that is 720x480, 4x3 (0.9), and what I do is just scale the timeline down so that it's letterboxed.  Is this the best method for achieving this?  Or would you do something else?  I don't like the idea of scaling my timeline down in Premiere.

    Hello.
    As Jim so rightly points out above, you do not need to do anything.
    Just use your normal 16:9 widescreen footage, and author as normal.
    Your player will letterbox automatically when it is connected to a 4:3 screen in setup (just make sure "Pan & Scan" is not also there)

  • I need help converting an excel formula to javascript for a fillable form.

    Here is the scenario,
    If a person travels for 1 or 2 days we pay out a mealsrate of 75% per day. If 3 or more days we pay # days less 2 days * 25%. I hope that makes sense.
    V7 = Days, F14 = Mealsrate
    Formula in Excel
    =IF($V$7 = 1,$F$14*0.75,($V$7*$F$14)-(($F$14*0.25)*2))  and it works.
    I am VERY NEW to javascript (like yesterday) so don't laugh. I really have no idea what I am doing, but I was trying. Here is what i got. (by the way, It doesn't work)
    if(this.getField( ("Days").value=="1")){
    var f =this.getField("Mealsrate");
    event.value= f.value * .75;
    }else event.value = (Days * f.value)- (f.value *.25)*2;
    I appreciate all the help i can get.
    Tracie
    I'll be back on Monday, I hope I can find my post.

    OK, that Excel formula can be reduced a bit. The following custom Calculate scipt will do what the formula does:
    // Custom Calculate script
    (function () {
        // Get the inputs
        var days = getField("Days").value;
        var rate = getField("Mealsrate").value;
        // Set this field value
        if (days == 1) {
            event.value = 0.75 * rate;
        } else {
            event.value = (days - 0.5) * rate;
    It would make sense to add additional code to deal with negative numbers in either of the input fields.
    Edit: corrected a typo

  • Premiere Pro project setup and exporting 16x9 to 4:3 letterbox

    I need to export a 16x9, 720/30p CS3 project, for final viewing on a 4:3 projector in letterbox. *This project is about to kick off with a VERY short deadling and the shooters keep changing their mind about whether they're going to shoot in 720/30p or 720/60p. I need to plan for both to be safe. How will this effect things in my original 16x9 project setup if they give me both 720/30p and 720/60p video? And what about exporting for letterbox viewing in 4:3 if this occurs? I mean, if I start a project in 720/30p with CS3 and they bring me 720/60p video as well as 720/30p video, will I have to start a new project and start editing everything all over again, and vice versa? Also, how will this effect my final letterboxed 16x9 product? **I also have to provide this to the customer in 16x9 DVD format.

    Sorry, but you are at the wrong forum. The Premiere forums are here:

  • Need to convert JApplet to JFrame

    I need to write code for where I have 60 balls bouncing around inside a window. The client will then be able to select a button and it will pull out a ball with the number 1-60 written on it. In the future, Swing related questions should be posted in the Swing forum.
    First you need to convert your custom painting. This is done by overriding the paintComponent() method of JComponent or JPanel. Read the Swing tutorial on [Custom Painting|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/TOC.html].
    If you need further help then you need to create a [Short, Self Contained, Compilable and Executable, Example Program (SSCCE)|http://homepage1.nifty.com/algafield/sscce.html], that demonstrates the incorrect behaviour.
    Don't forget to use the [Code Formatting Tags|http://forum.java.sun.com/help.jspa?sec=formatting], so the posted code retains its original formatting.

    I need to convert PDF file to Word Document, so it can be edited. But the recognizing text options do not have the language that I need. How I can convert the file in the desired of me language?

    The application Acrobat provides no language translation capability.
    If you localize the language for OS, MS Office applications, Acrobat, etc to the desired language try again.
    Alternative: transfer a copy of content into a web based translation service (Bing or Google provides a free service).
    Transfer the output into a word processing program that is localized to the appropriate language.
    Do cleanup.

  • Need to convert to .img file

    I have an image, currently in .bmp format, but can be changed to .jpg or .tiff. I need to convert it to .img. I'm running CS6 on a Mac.

    Are you sure you don't mean img in the file name?
    Some cameras create file name like: img001.jpg, img002.jpeg, etc.
    Googling .img points to some type of image in AutoCAD?
    I find it hard to believe that AutoCAD cannot work with .jpg or tiff.
    .JPG is pretty universally accepted by all applications that deal with images.
    Who is asking you for an image with the .img file extension and what are they planning to do with it, (use in what application)?

    Hi Gurus,

    like i need to convert the available statement in report from English to Thailand.
    Is their any function module to convert, please let me know.
    thanks
    balu.

    Hi,
    Do you want text in Thailand , when your logon language is English that to dynamic text ? is it so.
    If not  I think  you can do this using Translation  .
    Mintain text-elements and then GOTO -> Translation.
    When you logon in that particular language then it will be displayed in that language only.

    I have a few labview .iv files that I need to convert to version 8.6.  They were created in version 4.0.  Can I download an intermediate verison of labview to process the conversion?  Or can i order a cd?

    Typically, you would need access to several version of LabVIEW to do the conversion.
    Open the 4.0 VI in 5.1, save.
    Open the 5.1 VI in 7.1, save.
    Open the 7.1 VI in 8.6, save.
    This example uses the most popular versions - ones you are most likely to encounter. 6.i was also popular, and might work somewhere in there.

    Hi,
    Goto SE71 of your script and identify the original language in header details.
    Now goto SE71, form name with original language and click change, usually if you check the radio button trnslate to all languages it is available in all languages... now if you want the form to be avialable in only few languages, click radio button to individual languages and click arror language selelction and select ES... and EN now form will be available in EN and Spanish...save and activate.
    Or
    Go to se71->changeform->form menu->copy from.
    u will find the option to change langauage.
