Need to Downgrade from Tiger to Panther

I'm selling my iMac and need to downgrade it from Tiger to Panther, which originally came with the system. How do I go about doing this? In the process I also need to erase everything on my hard drive. Can I perform the downgrading from the original Panther installation cds, or erase the hard drive using those cds and reinstalling Panther from there?

Hello Kelly.
You need to backup all data first and use the Panther install package that shipped with this Mac and reformat the hard drive zeroing all data. Be sure to select HFS+ (or extended) with Journaling enabled when reformatting the hard drive. Instructions for zeroing all data included with this link.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107437
After doing so, re-install Panther and all software included with the Panther install package that shipped with this Mac when new. When completed, do not proceed with the computer setup assistant and shut down the computer.
When the buyer starts up the computer for the first time, he/she will be greeted with the computer setup assistant and you should include the Panther install package that shipped with this Mac as part of the sale.

  • Upgrade Safari 1.2 to 1.3.1 after downgrade from Tiger to Panther

I wished to restore performance to my G3 iBook by downgrading from Tiger to Panther, and have been successful with that and have restored all apps to Panther versions except for Safari. The downgrade (archive and install) left Safari 2.0 on my HD for some reason, which of course wouldn't launch under 10.3.9. I dragged Safari 2 to the trash, downloaded Safari 1.2 which installed fine. However when I try to upgrade now to 1.3.1, I am told by the installer that the software cannot be used with the disc volume (the system volume) I choose to install to.
(BTW, invoking Software Update says my software is all up to date, even though I'm only on Safari 1.2.)
I've seen the other threads which have suggested removing Safari pkg receipts from /library/receipts, but this hasn't helped me in this case; I can't find any thread that had a successful resolution yet. Anything else anyone can suggest? Many thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You can try using Pacifist to extract Safari from your install disk and install it. You may then be able to upgrade it more easily, although I can't promise that for sure.
Unless you are absolutely wedded to Safari, I find Camino to be at least as good (I think better) as Safari, and looks almost identical, so that there should not be much of a learning curve. I also use Firefox and especially like it for the measure of security it provides.
Please do not hesitate to post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Downgrade from Tiger to Panther?

    Hi All,
Is it possible to downgrade a Tiger Server back to Panther? We upgraded to Tiger on one XServe to see if there were any issues. Because we have one lisence we need to downgrade that server so we can install Tiger on the good one.
    TIA - Vijay

Archive and install is only for OS X Client.
If you really want to do this, the only way might be to export your OD Data using the "Archive" function in Server Admin. This puts the data in a format that looks just like when you do a command-line export of OD Data in Panther. You may be able to command-line import it to Panther Server. If you're interested in going with that, you can look up the info in the Server Documentation, or Apple Support files. I believe they have step-by-step instructions on command-line export/import of OD Data.
Besides the OD data, though... you're pretty much on your own. I don't know of a way to save all of your other services' settings.
    Good luck.

  • Downgrading from Tiger to Panther

I installed Tiger on an old Powerbook about six months ago. Since then, it has been very noisy, and always seems to be gasping for life. The old powerbook is 867 mhz with about 640 ram -- not ideal specs for Tiger, I guess. My question then is -- how do I downgrade to Panther? Do I need to completely wipe everything off the computer before putting in the Panther discs? If anybody has any experience with downgrading, it would be great to know. Thanks.

    You're welcome.
For quite a while though, I had been running it at less than
    1 GB of disc space.
Copied from Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space.
As a general rule of thumb: if the Available space on your Mac OS X startup disk is less than 5 GB, it is time to free some disk space. We suggest 5 GB as an absolute minimum as it generally requires that much free space to perform an Archive and Install of Mac OS X and still preserve some free space for VM swap files. However, more free space is better.
Although your Mac's specifications are plenty adequate for Tiger, this noise and potential hardware problem might be a coincidence that you are blaming on Tiger. Although most computer hardware can last a long time (especially Macs which is a factor in Apple's annual market share percentage for all computers sold since they generally don't need to be replaced as often as PCs), they don't last forever. It isn't a matter of if but when your hard drive has a partial or complete failure and although most don't experience a processor failure, it can occur.
Did a Hardware Test CD ship with this Mac when purchased? If so, I would boot the computer from the Hardware Test CD and run the Extended Tests to rule out a potential hardware problem.

  • Do I need to upgrade from tiger to leapord before upgrading to snow leopord?

Do I need to upgrade from tiger to leapord before upgrading to snow leopord?

No. You can update directly to Snow Leopard.
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and later.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. Download and install update(s) if updating:
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).
    E. To upgrade from an earlier major version:
Purchase the requisite installer package (Snow Leopard for example.)
    Boot from the installer DVD.
    Choose the install option:
    None required for Snow Leopard.
Archive and Install for versions prior to Snow Leopard.

  • Need to downgrade from OS 10.5 to OS 10.2 on Old 17" Powerbook

I need to downgrade my original 17" Powerbook from OS 10.5 so that I can operate OS 9. I have the original 2 install disks, which are 10.2, but I can't start up from the disk. My CD/DVD drive is bashed in so I have to use an external CD/DVD drive, but I successfully upgraded using this system. Every time I try to start up using an install disk below 10.5 using the "c" key method (I have tried the Powerbook 10.2 install CD, a 10.4 install CD from a Mac mini, and the 10.4 install CD from my current Macbook Pro), I get a grey screen with the apple, a blue screen, and then it boots up like normal to show my 10.5 desktop. I need suggestions on how to downgrade this computer because I really need to run several OS 9 programs for my research. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you.

You cannot simply install a lower version over an newer version. To install an older version you need to first erase the hard drive. See the following:
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit Disk Utility and return to the installer. Proceed with the OS X installation.

  • Need to upgrade from Tiger ASAP

So...I feel like an idiot. Somehow I never noticed before today (or even considered the possibility) that the new iPhone requires 10.5.8 or higher and I've been lazy about updating my MacBook Pro from Tiger. I was so happy I got out of store with my phone by 8am...and then I plugged it into my computer and discovered the problem. I'm upgrading from the original iPhone and I was hoping to sync my new phone with the contacts and apps and everything from the old one, but I obviously can't do that yet.
I'm fine with updating my OS but I wanted to ask for advice on the process of backing up everything on my computer beforehand and for anything else I might need to know about switching from Tiger to Snow Leopard. I'm hoping to get this done as soon as possible so I can enjoy my new phone (I mean, I already am, but it would be better with all my stuff synced on there!)

    Hi soaction;
My usual method for backup for an upgrade is to create a bootable clone on an external drive with either SuperDuper or CCC. Once the clone has been created, I always test it to be sure it can boot the Mac. Once I have done that, I proceed with the upgrade.

  • Need to downgrade from FF5. Where is the version 4 installer?

Due to the incompatibility with necessary add-ons, I need to downgrade FF5 to 4 immediately. Only the link for the previous installer is for 3.6.18 here:
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Where can I get the version 4 installer?

Hi Mate, I've had the same problem with my Alpine stereo I think.
I've found a few posts about trying an old .iswp file I think it is.
I use it in my car alot so I don't think I'll be upgrading it again.
    Good luck,

  • Downgrading from Tiger 10.4.11 to Panther 10.3.5?

So my old IMAC G5 (17in 512MB ram running Panther 10.3.9) recently had service at the apple store to replace the motherboard and the power supply. As a courtesy, they installed Tiger 10.4.11 when my computer shipped with disks for Panther 10.3.5.
While running the software updater, the OS update errored out and wouldn't restart from the apple menu. I had no choice but to do a cold restart which I knew would be bad. Now the computer boots past the gray screen with the turny gear and then the OS screen loads but the load bar doesn't load.
It's my assumption that I should reinstall the OS but without the retail Tiger disk I am screwed (since all I have is Panther). Any thoughts here on downgrading operating systems? I read all about it in the support section. I just want to know if anyone has actually done it and the thought of having to buy a retail Tiger version on ebay makes my blood boil (oh, that includes leopard too!) All the machine is being used for is leisure at this point, internet surfing and the like. Thoughts anyone?

Hi Karen, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Don't run the Panther's Disk Utility on the Tiger HDD, unless you want to erase things and go back to Panther.
Tough without the Install disc, but some things to try...
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Tough without the Tiger Disk problems, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
    1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
(SPACE between fsck AND -fy important)
    3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:

The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
    4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

  • Downgrading from tiger to 10.3.9. best way to do this ?

    hello !
just got a new g5 dual 2.3 (not core) and i dont want anything to do with tiger ! (running lots of software that does not play nice with tigers..)
what is the best way to downgrade to 10.3.9 ?
    thanks !

Hi csw, to "downgrade" to OS 10.3.9 you must first erase your entire drive, then install 10.3.x from the install disk and update to 10.3.9 with the 10.3.9 Stand Alone Combo Update
Do not use the disks that shipped with another Mac as these disks are model specific but rather the full retail Panther install disks.

  • Transfer from Tiger to Panther

If I am trasfering my files from a computer that has Tiger onto a computer that has panther, will it work? Do I do it the same way? Also, will I be able to move the Microsoft Office (on the tiger) to the other computer? or will I have to buy another? Thanks.

You can use Firewire Target Disk Mode to transfer data between Panther/Tiger Macs (actually as far back as 8.6).
Applications tend not to move well in this respect as many need proper installation to install the relevant components in the different directories within OS X. I think Office may be okay but remember that unless you delete Office from the original computer you're probably bending the law (Read the End User Licence Agreement).
    kind regards

  • I need to downgrade from the version 1.1 to 1.0

Just bought my new ipod nano 6th generation and everything worked great. a few days later it prompted me to upgrade to the 1.1 version. after the nearly half my library wont play on my ipod. ive tried a number of things to fix it with no luck so now im just looking to downgrade back to the 1.0 version. for some reason the files are no longer on my computer so does anyone know where i can download the file along with the signature file or maybe anyone who has to 1.0 version can email it to me? this issue has been such a pain and definitely has made me lose faith in buying from apple again

You need to get a copy of the older 1.1 firmware. I found it at http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/   Next connect your iPod to your computer and then hold down 'option' when clicking the 'restore' button in the iPod overview screen of iTunes. You will then be asked to select the iPod firmware you wish to use. Select iPod_1.1_36B00109.ipsw (which should be the name of the file you downloaded) and your unit will be reverted back to the older firmware.

  • I urgently need to downgrade from Acrobat Pro DC to XI. Help?

I teach the creation of accessible PDF documents and have a new computer. I installed various applications onto it including some Adobe products.
The course currently teaches how to use Acrobat Pro XI. This will change with the release of DC but not immediately. I have a class tomorrow and need to have Acrobat XI installed. How can I downgrade ASAP?
    Gerry

    Hi Phil,
The licence of Acrobat DC will not work with Acrobat XI, even its not possible to downdrade the licence from Adobe Acrobat DC Pro to Adobe Acrobat XI Pro if its not a volume licence.
Option to downgrade the licence is only available for Enterprise customers i.e with volume licences, and for that you need to contact our tech support, go to Contact Customer Care page and then click the "Still need help? Contact us" button to initiate a call or chat.

  • Help! Dead laptop and need to downgrade from 10.5, in particular, Mail

My G4 1.67, barely coping with 10.5 has died. I am now existing on my 11 yr old 400Mhz sawtooth until I have the funds to buy a new machine.
The HDD was rescued and is now hooked up to my Sawtooth (praise be to OSX flexibility in this regard)
However, the machine is on impulse power, 1/4 that of my 6 year old laptop.
As it has only 768MB RAM, even Tiger is a bit of a push, but livable. Leopard is not.
I do have my old 10.4.5 image and want to bring it up to date.
    1. I have an iPhone, so could I use that to bring my Safari bookmarks up to date?
    2. Mail - how could I bring back to my Tiger world the current state of my Mail on Leopard?
    3. Is there anything else I would need to pull back (keychain?) or is it best to somehow pull the entire user account back in?
    Thanks in advance

Unfortunately your 10.5 system will not run on your 400 Mhz G4.
You can upgrade to 10.4.11 on it using the update here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html
    following these directions*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
iTunes 9.2.1 for 10.4.11 may work better:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1056
If not, buying a used or refurbished 867 Mhz or faster PowerPC Mac will allow you to use the Migration Assistatant to bring in data off your old 10.5 hard drive.
Here's my FAQ on buying used or refurbished Macs*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/usedrefurbished.html
Some tips from this user tip may help you move data back in, but only if you can bring it down a version:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=435350&tstart=10
Lookup emlx converter to bring your Leopard e-mail down to Tiger, that may work. I haven't tried it.

  • Went back from Tiger to Panther and have really screwed up...

I have been unsuccessfully trying to get an HP Color Laser Jet 2600n to print with a GC iMac running Tiger, and finally decided Tiger just won't play nice with it, as I have another older G3 iMac running Panther that will print. So, I decided to go back to Panther on the first G3. And like a moron, didn't bother to read ahead of time online if there was anything I should do. And so I archived settings and preferences, and now cannot login to the computer. Is there anything I can do, or have I just royally screwed myself? I tried reinstalling Panther using the disk, and it installed again, but I still can't login- when I booted the computer using the disk, it didn't give me the archive option; it just installed the software.
Is there anything I can do? Anything at all? Oh, I'm so mad at myself!

Do you have another Mac? If so, you could boot your machine into target disk mode (hold down 't'), hook it up using a firewire cable to the other Mac and recover your stuff that way. Essentially, target disk mode turns the computer into a very expensive hard drive.
Alternatively, if you have an external drive you could boot from, you could install OS X on that drive, boot from that and try to recover the data that way.
The best option depends on what you have available to work with. If you post back details of what' available, somebody can help you figure out the best strategy.
