Need to download Lion

I am currently running OSX 10.5.8.
is there a way to download Snow Leopard from the internet so I can have the mac app store so I can then download Lion?
Or is there a way to skip Snow Leopard and direcly download Lion?

No.
First you need to check that your current Mac meets the System Requirements for Both Snow Leopard and Lion...
Snow Leopard Specs:
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Lion Specs:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html
If it does... then you need to Purchase and Install Snow Leopard
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
And then Purchase and Install Lion...

  • Do I need to download lion to move onto mountain lion?

I am downloading snow leopard right now, and I was wondering if I need to download lion before I download mountain lion? Can I just go straight to mountain lion?

You don't need Lion 10.7 but do need to update to 10.6.8. If you're installing it from a retail DVD and not using a copy on your organization's LAN (if any), it'll be either 10.6 or 10.6.3.

  • Do I need to download Lion seperately for each mac in my house?

Do I need to download Lion seperately for each mac in my house? Which would also result in paying for it multiple times, or is there some way to install on multiple macs with one download?

No. You can install Lion on all the computers you personally own. Just be sure each is running Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later. Open the App Store on each computer and log in using the Apple ID you used to purchase Lion. Click on Purchases. Click on the Install button to the right of the entry for your Lion purchase. The installer will be re-downloaded.
You may want to read the following first:
    Make Your Own Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that  you can use without having to re-download Lion.

  • Need to download Lion again?

I have the latest version of OSX Lion 10.7.3, but when I open Appstore, it says that I can download Lion, even though I already have it installed. If I go to the "Purchased" tab in Appstore all my bought Apps are installed except for Lion where it says "Install" instead of "Installed". Does anyone know if this is an update or if I just should ignore this?
    Thanks in advance!
    //Patric

Ignore it. If you're running 10.7.3 and Software Update says you're up-to-date you're good to go.
You may want to take the opportunity to download and save the Lion installer.dmg, if you don't have one, in case you ever need to re-install.

    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Starting an hour ago, the Mac App Store says I need to download Lion 10.7.4 again.  Anyone else?

I am currently running Mac OS 10.6.8 with all updates on a Mac Mini (3,1--the model with 5 USB ports).  Previously, I purchased, downloaded, but did NOT install Lion 10.7.3.  Yesterday, I successfully downloaded 10.7.4 via the Mac App Store, but as before I didn't install it (planning to do that this evening).  However, starting about an hour ago, the Mac App Store indicates that Lion has been updated and that I should download 10.7.4 -- again, apparently.  I'm using the same AppleID account (the only one I have).  Anyone else have the same experience?  Is there a 10.7.4 version 1.1?  If so, nothing in the software description mentions it...

This answer sidesteps my question.  I'm aware that I could have upgraded from 10.6.8 to my previously downloaded 10.7.3 and then updated to 10.7.4 using the smaller updaters (I would favor using the Combo).  But since the 10.7.3 FileVault security issue directly applied to me, I wanted to upgrade straight to 10.7.4, where it was addressed.  Also, since my internet connection is quite fast, taking 15 minutes to redownload all of it again was not a deal-breaker for me.  Interestingly, the instance of 10.7.4 I downloaded last night is 25 bytes longer than the 10.7.4 I downloaded the day before.  Performing a 'diff -ra' within 'Terminal' between the two instances of the 10.7.4 Installer app revealed that the changes are confined to a single file within: 'Install Mac OS X Lion.app/Contents/_MASReceipt/receipt', and that they look like timestamp differences, so I'm now guessing that the two instances are functionally identical...

  • Download lion dmg

    Hi all!
I bougth a Lion copy about a year ago. Now I want to do a clean install on my Mac so I've to download the dmg of Lion from App store. Anyway from App Store I can't no more find my Lion purchased copy. Any idea to solve this problem?

You don't need to download Lion from the App Store because you can do a clean install starting from Recovery HD, holding Command and R keys while your Mac is starting > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 After starting in Recovery, erase Macintosh HD in Disk Utility, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
However, it's better to make a bootable copy of your Lion installer onto a DVD or USB drive so you won't have to redownload Lion every time you want to reinstall it.
If you don't see Lion listed in purchases, check if it's hidden, and if so, unhide it > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4928 Do this before reinstalling OS X Lion from Recovery. After unhiding, go to Purchases and you will be able to download Lion. Then, use Lion Diskmaker to create a bootable DVD or USB drive with Lion > http://liondiskmaker.com

  • How to download lion installation files using windows

    Hi,
I installing a SSD into my new Macbook Pro and need to download Lion so I can do a clean install.
My problem is that I only have 1GB download limit at home so I would like to download at work. But work only has Windows based machines. Is there anyway to download it on a windows?
The nearest Apple store is 2 hours drive away, and I cannot connect my Mac into the work network.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

You didn't mention a redemption code.
You can download it, on a Mac. Do you know someone with a wireless network and a large download limit?
I would seriously be looking at updating your Internet Plan. A standard update of any OS (Not just the inital Lion download) will wipe out your allowance in one hit. If you want to keep your system up to date, you will find it almost impossible on 1GB of monthly download data. Even if you bought Snow Leopard and installed it, the updates would well outweigh your allowance.
    Cheers

  • How to download Lion to External HD

I need to download Lion from Apple Store to an external Hard Drive and make it bootable. Where can I find step by step procedure?

Do you want a second install of Lion?
You can Clone your current install of Lion to an external drive.
Or are you looking to make a Lion Install USB key with this new download to the external drive?
If you are looking to make a USB installer key then you need to direct the download to the external and do not proceed with the install. Just disconnect the external when the download finishes and the computer restarts to start the install.

  • Im on a Mac OS X 10.6.8 and i need 10.7 Lion and its not letting me download it because i want to download it for a minecraft bukkit server everytime i run it says this requires 10.7 lion or higher and im trying to download that! What do i do?

ps: sorry for my english :S

You apparently are using a version of OS X you did not purchase using your Apple ID. Although you can download Mavericks you cannot install it over your current system. You must repartition your hard drive, then reinstall the version of OS X originally installed when it came new from the factory. That would be on the installer discs that should have come with the computer. If the computer did not come with discs from the factory but OS X was pre-installed (Lion or Mountain Lion) then you can perform an Internet Recovery:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Do I need to download drivers for an HP 8600 all in one printer after upgrading to Mavericks from Mountain Lion?

I am about to upgrade my Mac's OS from Mountain Lion to Mavericks.   I recently networked to my Mac on our home wireless network an HP 8600 all in one printer/scanner and an HP LaserPro 127.   I saw a note posted in a non-Apple forum stating that the Mavericks upgrade should include the drivers needed to run these products on Mavericks.   Is that correct or will I need to download a new set of drivers from HP after I upgrade to Mavericks?
    Any guidance would be appreciated.
