Need to extract data from a bricked hard drive - Failure ID ucx77t-69j7ms-mfpx1f-60vp03

Hi My laptop (HP Pavilion Sleekbook 14, purchased in October 2012)  had gone slow recently, and finally its hard drive developed problems. At one point, it was so slow that it took a few minutes to sign off my user, so I shut it down manually while it was logging off. That was when it got really bad. Specifically, I reached the "Repairing disk errors. This may take over an hour to complete" screen. I left it to run for almost a full day and it didn't work. So, I rebooted the laptop and checked its diagnostics boot menu. It ran diagnostics on the hard drive, and on the whole laptop. There were no hardware problems or any codes for any individual components, except the hard drive. Specifically, it gave me the  Failure ID "ucx77t-69j7ms-mfpx1f-60vp03". I tried looking that up but I couldn't find anything. I wonder what that failure ID is for. Fortunately, I have a recovery drive, and most of the information on the laptop is backed up, but I need to extract some recently created data from my hard drive before I lose it by running recovery manager. I tried to back up some files, but the recovery drive could not reach any files to back up. I've also tried taking out the drive and putting it in an external hard drive enclosure then connecting it to another laptop, but it's telling me that the drive is only 25 GB when it's a 500 GB drive, and I still can't reach any files from C: inside. Can you help me figure out how to back up those files? They're only about 10-15 GB altogether, and I can easily fit them on another laptop.

The failure id message means the hard drive has failed and will have to be replaced. The slowness and other problems were early warning signs of a failing hdd.If the drive can not be read using an external enclosure-not much hope. You might try one of the free tools to recover files-especially #2 which claims ability to recover lost partitions.Maybe it can see your C partition. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm

  • Need to retrieve data from IBM Travelstar Hard drive from G3 Powerbook

The only problem is the G3 I had is broken, i now have a Macbook Pro Intel and need to retrieve the data from the old Hard drive.
I have removed the drive from the G3 but is it possible to connect it to my Macbook pro?
I'm considering buying an old G3 and fitting it to that then using target mode to retrieve the files.
Mac Book Pro 17" Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The most cost-effective solutions may be one of the external drive adapters such as the one from Newer Tech.

Just FYI, G3s do not support target disk mode. You'd have to have an AGP G4 or later.

  • How to extract data from an encrypted hard drive

Ok so i have a powerbookG4 with a dead logic board and i'm trying to extract all the data that i have from my hard drive. so i took out the hard rive and put it in a USB 3.5 hard drive enclosure, i can access some of the hard drive but the important stuff that i want are all encrypted by filevault in a folder that i can't access.
i tried to boot from the hard drive but it won't work.
do you have any suggestions??? help please....

Double-click the FileVault image and provide the password associated with that Mac OS X user account when prompted. If you don't have that password, but do have the master password, place the drive in a FireWire enclosure, use it to start up the computer, and unlock the FileVault account from there. If you don't have either password, the data inside is unrecoverable without them.

  • Extracting data from a Windows hard drive

My PC died and I bought a new iMac. I thought that turning my PC's internal hard drive into an external drive would ensure that all of my data would transfer. I set up the external hard drive and was able to get a few files; however, all of my music and photos are nowhere to be found. Is this simply because Windows XP was installed on the hard drive? Is there a way to extract this data and save it to my new iMac?

DiskWarrior is the best there is to "fix" various types of directory and corruption problems. In most cases, if DW can't fix it, nothing can. Disk Utility is great at finding problems, but can't fix all of them. Every Mac user should have a copy of DW.
Be sure to get DW on a CD, since that's what you boot from to fix the problem on your hard drive. You can download DW, but you have to burn it to a CD or put it on another bootable volume.

Stop using the drive immediately, un plug it.
Buy a copy of ProSoft DataRescue 4 and use it to search for deleted files.

  • Can I recover data from a reformatted hard drive?  I did not do a back up prior to talking to Apple Support and the guy having me delete the hard drive and start anew.  My bad but is all lost??

Can I recover data from a reformatted hard drive?  I did not complete a back up prior to talking to Apple Support and the guy having me delete the hard drive (10.5.8) and start anew (10.6.3).  My bad but is all lost?? Years of very important information....

You will need to purchase reovery sofware such as such as FileSalvage
    http://subrosasoft.com/software/filesalvage
You can download a demo copy that will tell you what it can recover
If you want to recover that you must pay for the software then
When you do the recovery, you will need another disk drive to receive the recovered files
Having install a new operating system on the disk after the retformat is going to gradually reduce the amount of data that this software will be able to recover for you

  • How do i retrieve data from my external hard drive?

how do i retrieve data from my external hard drive?

If your hard drive can be detected and shows up as a drive letter in my computer but you can't access your files, then you can recover your data off it with data recovery software easily. This way is the easiest and the most inexpensive way to recover your data.If you bring it to a computer repair shop that is available for data recovery servise, they will cost you $500-1000 or more.Hmm, a lot of money.
I managed to recover data from crashed hard drive with Tenorshare Data Recovery. If needed, you can download it and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether your data can be recovered. It will show you thumbnails for recoverable pictures.

  • I transferred data from my external hard drive to my restored Mac Book Pro via migration assistant and now my external hard drive in time capsule has red minus signs. How do I get rid of that without getting rid of any of my data?

I used Migration Assistant to transfer my data from my external hard drive via Time Capsule to my restored Mac Book Pro. When I now go into Time Capsule I there are red minus signs in the corner of all the folders that are contained in my back up. How do I get rid of this and access my previous back-ups?

Select the drive and Finder > Get info and at the bottom "ignore permissions on this volume"
You can copy the files, but the ownership on the files still belongs to the other user account, once your done copying, then perform a #6 Reset Users Permissions and that will set all the ownership to that account.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Another method is to copy the entire folder, then change it's permissions.

  • What is the exact name of the cable I need to connect my old hard drive from my macbook pro (it has been taken out of the computer) to my new macbook pro?  I need to transfer files from the old hard drive to the new computer.

No eSATA to USB. Just a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. Google SATA/IDE to USB adapter and you will get tons of links to buy them. Most likely your local computer electronics store has them, although they might be more expensive buying locally than online.
I have several. You can get either USB 2, which what I recommend, or USB 3. USB is backward compatible so a USB 3 adapter will work on a USB 2 port and a USB 2 adapter will work on a USB 3 port. Backward compatible in both directions.
I suggest a USB 2 type because there have been some problems with certain USB 3 devices, the USB 3 interface used isn't all that good in those certain devices. USB 3 is still fairly new where as USB 2 has been around for over 10 years.

  • Can I restore settings, apps and data from an external hard drive to new Macbook Pro?

I recently lost my Macbook Pro to water damage.  It was about 3 years old and tuned for comfort.  Unfortunately, my most recent backup is at least 3 months old.  I purchased a new MacBook Pro and I'm wondering what my options are for migrating my settings, apps and data from the old hard drive to the new MacBook Pro?  I have a USB drive bay that I plan to attach to the new MBP to gain access to the old hard drive.  Someone suggested Migration Assistant but my research hasn't turned up any information about migrating data from an external drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS!  I guess my research wasn't THAT thorough.   I booted with the external drive attached and setup immediately gave me the option to setup using Migration Assistant.  It was a little slow via USB (2+ hours) but it was nothing compared to the time it would have taken to do it manually.  My new 15" MBP looks exactly like my old 13" MBP.  AWESOME!!!
    Thanks again!

  • Can I recover data from an internal hard drive that I removed from my MB Pro?

A few months back my HD failed on my MB pro.  I have since then replaced this HD with a SSHD.  My question is can I recover this data from the old hard drive?  I remember when I was at the Genius Bar one of the techs told me there was a company I could send the HD to and they could recover the data.  Does anyone know of such a company?
    Thanks

here is one of many companies.  But it is expensive and not guaranteed.  http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/

Internal or external hard drive? Was the drive still working before you replaced it?

  • How do I recover data from my dead hard drive?

How do I recover data from my dead hard drive?

Is it dead or corrupt? There are recovery programs out there, however if your HD is head, paying pros to do data recovery is VERY costly.       Some have removed the platters and installed them in likewise drives that dont have head crashes, but torque tolerances are tight, and doing it right is a bit advanced and tricky for most. Ive done HD disk swaps 4 times and had success 3 of the 4 times. It requires cannibalizing another working HD.   In the future remember the golden rule, 2 copies is 1, and one is NONE.
Its likely you could find a local computer repair station that can do it for you cheaply.  HD dont really "die", they have fried SATA bus, or crashed HEADS........the platters DO demagnatize over long time due to heat and degauss of the data (poor storage, etc).........but in specific, a HARD DRIVE DOESNT DIE ,.........only the flying head mechanisms that read and write the data, and SATA / bus that feeds the data DIES,.......but the data (unless corrupt or magnetically corrupted) is THERE

    Hello, Esmin77.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I see you want to restore your MacBook Pro from an external drive.  Here is an article that may help you with this process if you used Time Machine to backup these files.

  • When transferring data from an old hard drive to a new one, is there a way to keep alias files and folders in tact?

My mac and I rely HEAVILY on the use of alias files and folders. The simple version of my question is: When transferring data from an old hard drive to a new one, is there a way to keep alias files and folders in tact?  These are not symlinks or symbolic links, they're all alias files and folders.
Is there any software out there that might help me with a solution?  Are there any tricks or tips you can give me to try?

Use either Setup Assistant at first start, or Migration Assistant on subsequent occasions and all will be transferred intact. Given your wording I presume you are Unix savvy and will appreciate the problems that duplicate userids would cause, so of you use MA for the migration, make sure the target Mac has no userid equal to that on the source and you will be fine.
SA does not have these issues since it runs before any user account is created, so it can simply copy over everything. But MA runs after the fact and only solves the issue partially by changing the UID in the user directory, leading to permission problems.
