Need to find a book about Java history

Hello,
I'm not sure I am posting in the right forum, but anyway...
I am currently performing a research entitled "The use of the Java platform in the entertainment industry". To begin, I need a book where I could find hitorical information about Java cretion and evolution, but I can't manage to find one. The history given on the java.sun.com website is way too short and all the books I could find deal with technical aspect of Java...
Does anyone knows a book that could interest me?

Thanks for the links, but as it is an academic
dissertation, I'd rather find a book... The Internet
is still not really trusted as an academic source of
information.
So there's no chance for me to find a book with a
proper history (better than the half page introduction
in present in every Java programming book)Well then why not try journals? You won't find one book from which you can write your whole thesis, and if you did, you probably wouldn't get very good marks. As a guide, my MSc dissertation had around 300 references and 60k words, which is not uncommon. Journal articles are far more targetted, and certainly more likely to cover such a specific area as what you are asking of.

Okay, kidding aside. The idea as presented so far is rather vague.
Is it going to be a stand-alone application, or a client-server one with a thin client, or a not so thin one? Where do you intend to store the data?

    Hello all,
I am student and I am writing bachelor work for Riga Technical University (Java technology in telecommunications) and I want to know what will be the correct Java technologies about which I can write?

    Seriously.
I'm not intending any insult by being dismissive, but it just doesn't make sense to ask that question here. If you have questions about your academic curriculum, the place to resolve those questions are with your institution.
Does anyone have idea or can give me content? If you're just hunting for ideas, do a little research to find a topic interesting to you and pertinent to your course. That's your responsibility as a student.
That said, what I think would be a decent enough question for the forum would be, "I've done some looking into X as it relates to the Java platform, and I've come to the conclusion that Y. What issues, concerns, or feedback do you see regarding my conclusion?" And then people can answer and discuss as they choose.

  • Excellent online book  about java

Over the last few weeks I have had some very helpful answers to my questions from the community on this forum. I thought I'd put a little back in. I found this online book and it is outstanding in its explaination of Java. Anyone learning Java should (imho) read it. And it is free!!

  • Need help opening a CD about family history

The instructions for the CD are (1) insert disc and wait for icon to appear on desktop [this I can do]; (2) open Netscape [here's the starting point for my question....]
Is Navigator the same as Netscape and which version do I look for [my mac is OS 10.6.7]? What do I need to know about installing it, given that I'm obviously not very tech-savvy?
And what does a browser have to do with a CD anyway?
I'm sorry if I picked the wrong forum to post this question! But I appreciate any help you can give me.

Follow the rest of the instructions in any web browser unless you run into further issues. This typically occurs when the files on the CD are the same format as those used on the web.

  • Books about MVVM, architecture, design patterns for Windows Phone 8.1

    Hi,
I'm looking for a book or books (or other resources) that explain how to develop an app with a proper architecture. I mean what each layer (bussines layer, data layer, network access) should do and how should it look like. I'm also looking for a book about
    MVVM.
Right now I'm struggling with how to create a layer for network communication - how to separate classes for requests and responses, how to manage requests and create some queue of requests and also to provide some way to cancel them when they are no longer
needed, how to work with servers that use some level of security (cookies, certificates etc.).
Another thing is caching - how to design a short-term cache or a persistant cache (database), what technologies I can use etc.
Last thing that I'm struggling with is also naming. How to name classes in those layers, e.g. to distinguish between classes mapping data from some ORM database, for mapping on JSON in network communication. etc.
I hope you got the idea :)
    Thanks.

Currently, I don't find a book about MVVM pattern for Windows Phone 8.1, but I think MSDN and some blogs have some useful samples and conceptions: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/jj883732.aspx
    http://channel9.msdn.com/Series/Windows-Phone-8-1-Development-for-Absolute-Beginners
And I think your question includes too much scopes, maybe you need to split it into some blocks and get help in the related forum
    Best Regards,
Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help

  • Need to talk through some basic Java principles

I know this is asking a lot, but I need to talk to someone about Java basics. I have an interview coming up. I am studying, but really need to talk through some things with someone who is familiar with Java programming. My email address is [email protected] If someone could send me a telephone number and perhaps spend 30 minutes on the phone, I would be very greatful. Thanks!

I don't know if there are any forums where they help you fake your way through interviews.

We have 30 ipads at our school and it is great.  We are about 850 student on my school and everyone are using the ipads. One hour at the time. (we have a booking system.)
I teach music and are using Garageband. I need to find away were my students that are working on a project can export the files and save them somewhere, so when they 7 days later open Garage band can import there song with all the correct  midi-tracks. When I export the song to Icloud the song become an Mp4 file (I think).  And I can import the files via Icloude.
This is because too many times the song has been sabotages during the week
    Dan Sweden

    Dan,
your students could store their projects in iCloud, only you would continously have to change the AppleIDs of the iPads, so each student could store the songs with their own AppleID.  I don't think this will be feasable.
The other possibility would be to share the projects to iTunes and to download them to iTunes  on a Mac at the end of each lesson. Does your school have Macs? This will not work with PCs.
See this link:  GarageBand for iPad: Get answers fast http://help.apple.com/garageband/ipad/1.2/index.html#chsec12c387
Look at the section "Share GarageBand songs",

  • Need help about java

    guys i need ur help.
i have just started to learn java. but not getting the basics of it. can u plz suggest any book for it ? so that i can start studying it. how should i proceed? plz provide me the necessary information about it.

I'd suggest forgetting about Java until you have
    learnt English.
ur, u, plz are not words. That's indeed a valuable input. I'm fearing the day
when I see someone writing code like
    pblc sttic vod mn(Strng[] a) {
    Sstm.out.prntln("Hw r u!");
ode]and complain about "Jav bad, Jav not run".
followed by someone launching a JSR "SMS 1ee7 sp3ak syntax for Jav" which gets immediately approved.

  • About Java 2 opaque font color question, help needed!

About Java 2 opaque font color question, help needed!
I was trying to test opaque font (the string has a foreground color and a background color), but i can't find the method for doing that.
i can change foreground by Graphics2D.setPaint(Color.black).
Anybody know how to change the background of the string?
    Thanks!

Hi. The way I'd do it would be to use the font metrics to find the length of a string and draw a rectangle and then drawstring over the rectangle. If you want an example, I can post it although I suspect theres a better way.

  • Where can I find knowledge about "java network programming"?

I am interested in network programming in java. I need some documents and I don't where can I find it?

  • Book recommendation about java objects

Hi I've been reading books and writing java for about 2 years. most of the books look the same. they cover different parts of java such as I/O, networking, GUI..
But I am very interested is understanding about objects and how they work or should be created and used. What does extending, implementing, interfaces,... really mean. I do have a general understanding of it and I use them all the time but mostly by looking at examples and based on my own ideas but it seems that most of the design that I do can be done in so many ways. I look at source codes of others and some designs make sense to me while others are confusing and have dozens of classes and sub classes all mixed into a package. I want to have a better understanding of object. any books or tutorial or other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you want a book specifically tied to Java, http://java.sun.com/docs/books/javaprog/ is very good. James Gosling is one of the authors, so it really reflects the design philoophy of Java. It is also clearer on the tradeoffs made in the design than books by "Java advocates" seem to be.
The class ic work on OOP is "Object Oriented Software Construction" by Bertrand Meyer. It needs study - but it repays the effort.
