Need to format my macbook
I've been having trouble with my keyboard. Certain letters do not work, but mostly result in other commands being performed or other keys being "pressed". It is not my actual keyboard, as I have tried attaching a USB keyboard, but it does the exact same thing. Someone suggested that something could have over written my preferences. Just needing some help with wiping my whole mac...
Boot from the software install DVD that came with your Mac, choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, erase the drive, reinstall the OS.

Try the other USB port. If it still doesn't show up in Disk Utility then there may be something wrong with your Mac. Try something else in each USB port and see if it is seen. If the other thing, like a USB thumb drive, does show up in disk utiltiy then the USB ports are fine.
Power down the system and restart with the drive connected, go to DU and see it it is seen. -

Would my friend's dvds work to format my macbook pro to factory settings as if out of the box?
i also had windows running on my mac, i used disc utility to erase the partition for windows, not bootcamp, so the partition is empty, i cant get the main hard drive extended as it was before because it gives me a message saying "could not modify partition map because filesystem verification failed", and when i try to verify it through disc utility it says that i need to my os x dvd and repair it, if i just format it, will that all go away?

Slightly more complicated answer;
You may be able to boot from the disc and use Disk Utility to partition and wipe the HDD (though it may not boot at all).
You can't install an OS from the other computer's discs. It simply will not allow the installation.
You would also be violating the software licence agreement.
As your originals are 10.5.x, you can buy the Snow Leopard retail installer (10.6.3) and format and install from that.

First, I'd advise you to make a backup. Time Machine is fine, but I recommend making a bootable backup with Carbon Copy Cloner if possible.
Then, insert the Snow Leopard DVD (it's a retail version, right? Not a grey disk meant for another machine?) and run the installer on the disk. Should be automatic from that point in. You don't need to reformat your drive.

Always smart to format, install the OS, make sure all is working properly, then install in your computer. That is unless you like installing/removing hard drives in a laptop.

Is your external hard drive formatted for Mac? To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Put the new drive in your MacBook, then format and partition the new drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer your OS back to the new drive.

I use my iPod on a MacBook with my iTunes library, but now want to ALSO use it as a simple hard drive on my PC for files transfer.
In the Windows explorer, I am told that it is not formatted and I am proposed to format it, which would erase all data on it.

Thanks a lot in advance.To use the iPod Classic on both the Mac and Windows PC, you need to format it in FAT32 filesystem structure, which both OS can recognise.
Yes, formatting it in FAT32, using iTunes, will erase all music and data in your iPod, but that is no problem if you have all the music in your Mac iTunes library.
So to do this,
Install the Latest iTunes in your windows PC, run itunes and check that all is in order (you can navigate, play some sample songs in itunes.)
Connect your iPod to the Windows PC, USB 2.0 port (please dont use USB hub with iPod Classic, -my bad personal experience, freezing itunes and windows)
iTunes will pop a windows asking you to reformat it in FAT32 and Restore
Click ok. (HERE there maybe some problem, if your iPod hardisk is not in tiptop condition)
When Restore is complete, eject the iPod
Connect it to your Mac and sync iTunes library.
If you want to use the iPod in Windows as an external hd, you have to set it in Disk Mode. first then Windows will recognise it as a portable HD.

Instructions examples:
1) Go into disk utility and erase the hard drive.
Problem: when I do that, it doesn't let me because the erase button is in the "greyed", so I can't click on that.
2) Restart the computer and hold down "c" and follow the instrctions...
Problem: I did that, but it just restart normally, it doesn't take me to some special screen.
3) Restart with the Mac OS CD installer and hold down "c" as it reboots.
Problem: same as number 2.
4) Restart and hold down "option" - disk utility - erase HD
Problem: I did that, and the hard drive icon with the arrow pointing up pops up; however, when I click on it, it just boot up as usual, and when I go into disk utility, I had the same problem as number 1.
This is really frustrating!! Please help!!

No disk inserted, you need a bootable disk to use the c key at boot.

Perhaps you held it too late.

The option key held at boot gives you Startup Manager, which gives you a choice of bootable options provided the boot cd is inserted obviously.
If you didn't wait for the cd boot option to appear and clicked the hard drive and arrow right away, it's possible you missed the cd boot option as it takes a bit longer to appear on the screen.
If you went all over the above and can't boot from the 10.5 cd, then what likely occured is your operating system was upgraded to a later OS X version like 10.6 or later and the firmware has been updated to ignore booting or recognizing that 10.5 boot disk as that operating system is now obsolete.
Another option is your using the wrong 10.5 disk, like it's from another model of Mac with different hardware drivers, thus can't be used on your machine.
Sometimes the disk is a retail copy, but is only for compatible Mac's that came PRIOR to the release of the retail disk, obviously not for Mac's that came afterwards because of new hardware drivers not on the burned disk.
If your machine is on 10.4, it might not have enough RAM for 10.5.
If your machine is on 10.5 now, then you should be able to boot from the disk that came with the machine, unless it's defective, scratched or dirty.
If your Mac is a Intel processor Mac, then you should be using 10.6 at least now, it's still getting updates to 10.6.8 (not for Safari or Java 6, but you can disable both and use Firefox)
Usually a 10.5 issued Mac is too old for the later OS X versions of 10.7 and later, perhaps the MacPro tower being the rare exceptions.
OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still
Also usually a 10.5 era issued Mac is beyond it's end of life stage, likely to die soon and not worth spending great sums of money to upgrade RAM and all software for 10.7 and beyond, your better off buying a new machine for 10.7+ or use it on 10.6.8 max until it drops dead or sell it online.
You didn't state your Mac's model identifier, it can be gleamed from System Profiler or Apple menu > About this Mac > More information.
With the model identifier, current operating system version running and the RAM amount installed, we can look up the machine on our database and recommend a course of action or if you cannot install 10.5 on that machine. -
Error screen after formatting my macbook
I formatted my MacBook Air a few days ago in order to decongest it because it showed I had barely any disk space left despite me removing almost everything from the computer. Before formatting it, I backed the hard drive up to an external drive in Mac OS Extended (as recommended on a post). After formatting the laptop, I was taken to a menu which had options such as Restore from time machine backup or reinstall the OS etc. I chose to reinstall the OS since the reason I formatted the paptop was because of the issue with disk space, and restoring from the backup will essentially just take up all the space again. After about 4 hours of the reinstallation process, the installation stopped and the computer froze. I decided to restart the computer. The computer did not automatically go back to that menu, so I pressed Cmd + R as recommended online. This took me back to the menu and at this point I needed my computer to work so I may do assignments. I chose to restore the backup instead. After an almost complete restoration, I got an error message stating that the restore cannot be completed. Baffled, I restarted the computer. When I restarted it, it said "the computer was restarted due to a problem" or something along those lines. Since then, right after displaying that message it will give me an error message which I have attached though a picture. Immediately after showing that code, the computer restarts and does the same. Over and over again. I am a student and do not have access to funds or an apple store, which is why I decided to format it myself instead of seeking professional help. Please help me understand what is going on and how I may fix it. Thank you.
Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

Not able to format my macbook pro
I am trying to format my MacBook pro i got fail message while installing mountain lion from external bootable external hard drive but setup is not completing when I checked it I found that the OSX not able to unmount the Macintosh HD the mail partition.
now my laptop is not working at all please help.

Ahmad M.AL-jalladTry connecting the exFAT drive back to the Windows notebook and use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in your Taskbar.
Run a updated malware scan and/or remove any original data and reformat the drive again.
Your issue doesn't appear to be widespread, so I'm leaning towards something that got messed up somehow.
Mac's can read/write MBR/GUID and FAT32/exFAT drives, only can read NTFS, so it shouldn't be having a problem. -

Look for cloud solutions such as DropBox, OneDrive, SugarSync or others. They are all cloud based services that sync documents between computers via the cloud. Of course another solution is simply a flash drive formatted in exFat so that Macs and Windows computers can read it.

I had a 640GB HDD in my Early 2008 Macbook and it was just too much it would always freeze up the computer a bit for only a few seconds but ya. Then I realized that it was the size of the HDD that was causing it since the Early 2008 Macbook models can only handle a MAX od 500GB while the Early 2008 Macbook Pros could have a MAX of 640GB (Lucked out there!) lol But ya the Early 2008 Mocbooks can only handle a MAX HDD size of 500GB and that's it!! lol

i have 3tb seagate goflex external hard drive.its brand new in package.i took it out of case and deleted partitions that were created by manufacturer.so now i have 2800 gigs.its formatted ntfs.will it work for late 2010 27" imac internal hard drive replacement.i found a apple repair place that will charge me 50$ to swap drives for me assuming i have the drive.i will have to install leopard myself at this price.i dont want to have to pay for anything other than the swap.will this hard drive work with this format or do i need to format it differently.

How do I copy a music file with artwork to a non Apple phone? Sometimes it works, sometimes not!
