Need to format new HD but lost restore DVDs

I just bought a new MacBook Pro 13" laptop. I also bought a new 500gb WD Scorpio Blue hard drive at the same time. My plan was to swap out the stock 160gb HD, and install the 500gb drive, and then format, install Leopard using the Apple Restore DVD, and then use Migration Assistant to transfer files etc from my old MB.
The problem is my wife threw out the MBP box, which contained the Install/Recovery DVDs. Doh. Now I do have a retail Leopard disc (and retail iLife 09 disc) that I bought to update my old MB a few years back. Can I use the Leopard disk to setup the new HD on the MBP 13"? Will I run into any issues regarding drivers or specific files that are on the factory Restore discs but not on the retail Leopard disc? Am I better off going to the Apple Store and trying to get replacement Install/Restore DVDs?
Thanks

Another option is to purchase an inexpensive external SATA enclosure. You can just put your new drive in the external enclosure and use either SuperDuper (free for full clones) or CarbonCopyCloner (completely free... but accepts donations) to clone your internal drive to your new one in the external enclosure. After you complete the cloning process... restart your machine holding down the "Option" key. This will bring up a screen that will let you select your startup disk. You would then pick your external drive (you need to actually press the mouse button here... if you have "tap to click" enabled, it won't work at this point). This will launch your OS from your external drive. Note it will be a bit slower as the USB/Firewire bus is somewhat slower than your internal SATA bus. Try it out a bit to make sure everything is working okay. Then you can just swap the drives... putting your old one in the external enclosure as a backup. NOTE: There have been quite a number of issues reported with third party drives... the Scorpion Blue in particular. This is related to firmware 1.7:

Why don't you talk to apple and find out if backup exists? That conversation with apple will stop your guessing.

It would help if you would tell us which version. If it's PSE 12, just install the trial and enter your serial number into that.

If your computer is running an OS X prior to Snow Leopard 10.6,
the answer (if it is an Intel-based Mac; not old PowerPC model)
would be to buy the retail Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD from Apple
for about $20, and install it. Then update that to 10.6.8 by using
the installed Snow Leopard online to get Combo Update v1.1 for
Snow Leopard 10.6.8. After that is installed & updated, run the
system's Software Update again, to see what else is available to
    that system.
Later systems can then be looked into at Mac App Store, once
the computer is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
And if your computer is a Power PC (G4/G5, etc) and has no
Core2Duo kind of CPU -- See "About this Mac" in apple menu
to disclose the general info about your Mac. Also you can see
even more by clicking on "More Info" when looking in there...
If it isn't an Intel-based Mac, it can't run a system past 10.5.8.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Purchased new mac, but lost serial number and no longer have access to registered email.  Help

    Hi,
As the subject header states, I purchased new mac, but lost my serial number and no longer have access to registered email.  I had purchased the Creative Suite Web and Design C6 version.  Support said they can only forward my lost serial number to the registered email.  Since she was without effective tools, she recommended I post something on the forums for support.  Anyone have the ability to get me back to using my suite?
    Thank you,
    Philip

Only the person(s) you spoke to have the ability to provide you with the serial number.  People here can merely suggest where to look for it.  If you registered your software when you installed it originally then you should be able to find your serial number stored in your Adobe account online in the Products section.
You might want to try updating your information in your account if the email is the only thing holding back from getting the info sent to you.

  • I need to format my iPod but I don't want to lose my files!

Hello, obviously I'm here looking for help lol.
The problem is this; I purchased my iPod mini December 2005 and never had any problems until several weeks ago. When I plug my iPod into my computer, it always says it needs to be formated. Seeing that, I do believe that it needs to be formated. However, I DO NOT beleive that all 435 songs including ones I purchased for should be wasted.
Someone might say I need to back everything up onto a data DVD from iTunes. The only way you can do that is if you're using the home computer of your iPod. Time went by and I have a different computer so I don't have all of my songs on my current computer.
Seeing how the computer recognizes the iPod (despite the fact it notes it needs to be formated) is there any for me to transfer ALL of my files from my iPod to a data DVD disk? It gets really frustrating to have an iPod that costs alot and knowing it's not working how it's supposed to & knowing music that I purchased are about to be whiped out.
So just wondering if there's any tricks or program/s I can use or do to solve this problem to transfer my files from the iPod to a DVD so I can format the iPod without losing everything. Thanks.

there are 3rd party applications that will do what you need. Use the search function or google.
That said, the fact you didn't back up your purchased songs to CD/DVD or external hard drive when you moved computers or just as a practical matter is irresponsible.
Those songs are files just like a Word document or anything else. If you don't back it up and your only copy gets damaged then its your own fault for not backing up.
In this case your iPod is not to blame for having the only copy. All hard drives die. Period. You are lucky you have time to back up your files off the iPod now before everything went. You need to have more than the copy on the iPod of your purchased songs. Back up or waste $400 bucks of music

  • In NEED of a new battery, but I do need help.

I have the old macbook Pro, 15-inch, the all silver one, not the one with the black keys/border. Anyways, I know I need a new battery because when I take it off the charger, it dies within 30+ seconds. I was just wondering which battery I should get. I prefer one from a legit website. I'm not sure if the new macbook pro's work on my mac? I'm a noob with apple, so I am not too sure. I got this computer from my brother.
My battery's model number says (A1175), but the battery's I see on apple.com are MA348LL/A.
Post links if you can. Thank you very much.

I'd go with something like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/A1150-A1175-MA348LL-Replacement-Lithium-Polymer/dp/B003DXF JY8/ref=sr18?ie=UTF8&qid=1293587521&sr=8-8
There are cheaper ones on the site but some are aftermarket or really old.

  • Need help formating new HD  ???

Just got a new External firewire HD to put my iTunes library. Its a G drive 500gb.
Do I need to reformat the HD before transfering my iTunes folder (if so how)? Do I need to partion the HD(same how)? Don't know what to do...
I want to make sure I do this right so the HD is fast and reliable... The only files on this new HD will be the iTunes files.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

If all you plan to use it for is to store your iTunes
    there's no need to partition.
Just open Disk Utility from Utilities:
    1. Click the "Erase" tab
    2. Select your entire disk, the 500 GB on the sidebar
    (the uppermost icon).
    3. Format: "Mac OS Extended"
    4. Name the Disk
    5. Click on erase
    -mj
    [email protected]
    om
    That's all? Great....
    thanks a lot.

  • I need to reinstall logic 8 but lost serial number

I have had to wipe my hard drive and now need to reinstall logic 8 before i install Logic 9 upgrade, but I have lost the serial number for 8. What should I do?

    Hi
If you intend to upgrade to Logic 9, you should not need to actually install Logic 8 (unless you want to).
You will need the 8 Serial number in either case if you are using an upgrade installation disk set for Logic Studio (2).

  • New Superdrive, but lost Airport

My combo drive died in my Ti Book 800, since my Applecare expired, I bought a dual layer Matshita Super Drive from OWC. The installation went well, but I lost my airport card afterwards. The icon says it's on but the system profiler says it's not. I've reseated it and checked the antenna, but it doesn't turn on. My external Belkin pc-card works in the system, but I can't seem to power up the internal card. I toss out the airport prefs too. Any ideas??
    Thanks,
    Bob

Yes, it is the Belkin. I don't remember if I loaded any drivers for it. The Belkin seems to work fine and I guess it will be the final solution to this problem. I have always used both cards, not simultaneously. Yes, the Belkin is faster with better range, but it sticks out and is not hot swapable. I couldn't leave it in when transporting the PB and it would mean I would have to shut down and reboot all the time. Also, there is a part of me that is bothered by an issue that I can't resolve. I did a hardware check and the internal airport card passed. I just haven't resolved myself to the idea that this is a problem that I can't fix.
Thank you for your help and interest.

  • Need to format c:\*.* but keep my ITunes library

I cannot find the anser to a seemingly simple question....
Assuming I have properly saved my itunes library to an external hard drive, how do I reinstall my itunes library after reinstalling Windows?
I'd hate to start this process without reassurance that I will recover my daughters itunes libray, playlists and ratings.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Assuming you have copied the entire iTunes folder - which includes the iTunes Music , Album Artwork and Previous iTunes Libraries folders along with the iTunes Library files - from C:\Documents and Settings\ user name \My Documents\My Music to the external drive, all you will have to do is paste it into C:\Documents and Settings\ user name \My Documents\My Music on your newly formatted computer.
The entire path to the iTunes folder on the new installation must be identical to the path on the old installation, including the user name .
Have a look at this User Tip .
Post back with any further questions.

  • Installing Cs5 on new iMac but lost my serial number

I purchased Cs5 through my school in 2011 and installed it on my macbook. I have a new iMac and want to install Cs5 on it (because I have the discs) but I can't redeem my serial number. Is this because it was already redeemed once? I don't believe I ever registered this product...I have the product code and receipt of purchase and I just want to put in on my new computer.
