Need to get a bootable external E-SATA HDD connected via E-SATA ExpressCard adaptor

We need to get a bootable external E-SATA HDD connected via E-SATA ExpressCard adaptor to this laptop however there are 2 main question before we purchase those hardware:
1 - will it be bootable at all?
2 - what speed is going to be provided by the ExpressCard slot on this laptop - is it comparable with E-SATA standard?
I'm purchasing the card here http://www.ebay.com/itm/add-2-eSATA-Hard-Disk-ports-for-Laptop-Notebook-PC-fits-34mm-Expresscard-slo... but still can't understand is it compatible and what speed will I get on the slot of my laptop - taking into account your official specification:

Could you please advise us on the above?

wiki explains that "...The ExpressCard has a maximum throughput of 2.5 Gbit/s through PCI Express and 480 Mbit/s through USB 2.0 dedicated for each slot, while all CardBus devices connected to a computer share a total 1.06 Gbit/s bandwidth." - but:
how can I know whichever bus (PCIExpress or USB) is used in my laptop for this interface?

Just like you would create a new folder anywhere. Open the drive's icon from your desktop or the Finder, and click shift-command-N. (Or use the Finder menu if you prefer - File - New Folder).
If you can't create a folder, your drive may be the wrong format (you can't write to a Windows/NTFS formatted drive, for example). You'll have to back up any files you have on there, and then use Disk Utility to reformat it to Mac Extended (if it will only be used on a Mac) or MS-DOS format (if you want to share it with a PC).

Looks like the Silicon Image drivers were moved to the incompatible software folder during install/upgrade.
Downloaded latest drivers, errored out of install claiming that the drivers were from an unknown author!!!
Emailed their tech support this evening describing problem.

If you'd like to change the audio output of your Mac, you can do so by accessing the Sound preferences in your System Preferences.
Before you start, open the Output pane of Sound preferences (choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Sound, then click Output).
Choose a sound output device
From the list of sound output devices, select the one you want to use. All sound output devices available to your Mac are listed, including the computer’s internal speakers, devices plugged into your computer’s sound port (), USB speakers, and AirPlay devices.
For any device plugged into the computer’s sound port, choose Headphones.

What do I need to make a bootable external disk?

I got a response from Apple support that said I could make an external disk a bootable one, like a flash drive or ext hard disk, by using an OS X Installer app that was supposed to be available at the Mac App Store. I looked and couldn't find it. Since we no longer get a hard-copy of the system install disk, I was trying to figure out what to do to make a 500Gb external disk one I could boot using the MacBook Air with its limited GB storage.
So if anyone can give me the simple solution I'd appreciate it.

Get an external disk drive. Start by partitioning and formatting it:
Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Next, clone your existing system disk to the external one:
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
     1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
         button.
     2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
     3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
     4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
         to the Destination entry field.
     5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
         the Source entry field.
     6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Test the new clone by:
Boot Using OPTION key:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
      "OPTION" key.
3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
4. Select the external disk's icon.
5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.

Need help finding a bootable external hard drive for a G4 Mini

Without going into details of a 3 month and counting 'nightmare' (several well-known vendors), I still can not find a hard disk drive that will still boot a PPC G4 Mini over Firewire 400. As I understand it, the Oxford (now J-Micron) 940-series chip-sets are not compatible with pre-2009 Macs. Can anyone provide clarity as to the precise requirements in this application and/or suggest a 1 to 2 TB drive that will still boot a PPC over Firewire? [And before anyone is stimulated to be 'cute' (snide), No, the G4(s) is not my only current Macs but I do have significant (valid to me) reasons to keep one working.]

Okay, I just looked at that OWC Elite Pro (not that it was unknown to me previously) - and they're still claiming that it has the Oxford 934 chip set. (so far so good). OTOH, I've been in daily contact with OWC techs and senior mgmt for several months now and no one there has ever suggested this as a potential alternative. I've been a loyal OWC customer since 1988 and had always highly--recommended them to friends (PREVIOUSLY). At the same time, on their so-called MiniStack "Classic" (NOT) model/page, they list the newer Oxford 943 chip set (which they've know for almost at least 3 months now (and have admitted in writing to me) will NOT ever boot a pre-2009 Mac (PPC or Intel) until/unless they come up with compatible firmware. Meanwhile (and to date), that same web page states " It can act as a boot drive as well." Which is a known, proven and admitted lie - which I've reminded them of at every possible occassion since October (and still they persist) . But, they'll be glad to take your money - they took mine after I had explicitly asked before purchasing 2 of these units if it would boot the G4 - and was told yes, but they knew/know it won't (go figure). Furthermore, be forewarned that their Guardian MAXimus is by far the worst POS I've ever seen in 30-years as a Mac addict. There' SO much wrong with it/these, it'd take me a few days to write it all out - as if I would want to ever revisit that sub-aspect of this continuing 'nightmare'

Help needed in installation on a external USB portable HDD

i have a WD My Passport USB 3.0 500 GB HDD
i have successfully installed various os like Ubuntu, pinguy, mint etc.
and so far i'm unsuccessfull in installing arc linux
i use the net install cd and the installation is smooth
only whn i reboot and boot off my hdd
i get an error saying cannot find filep [something on similar lines and when i try booting again [without a reboot] i get error 18 and and boot cylindar size exceeds maximum value type error
i tried rootdelay=8 from the Beginars guide wiki
and after scavenging through forums even enabled usb in the hook file while installing
i still cant boot
please help me

Do I need AAAA records in DNS for MPs for clients connecting via DirectAccess?

This is my situation:
Have had SCCM 2007 r3 installed for some time
Have DirectAccess implemented for over 2 years
We are in Mixed Mode
Have always had issues with DA connected clients getting adverts from SCCM
DA connected clients do not report heartbeat
In troubleshooting I have added the ipv6 boundaries and followed all the articles on FW settings and DA settings. Still no luck.
I ran across an article that said you need to have AAAA records in DNS for you MPs. Is that true? and if so, how do I get them into DNS as they are not there right now.
Any help (especially if I am on the wrong track) would be helpful.

Yes, I know this is an old post, but I’m trying to clean them up.
No CM07 does not need a AAAA record. Honestly this is going to be a DA issue not a CM07 issue.

I have my western digital 500gb harddrive connected to my airport extreme so I can use my HD wirelessly. I tried searching for files in my wireless harddrive through finder, but it doesn't seem to search it, only on my macbook itself. Is it possible to search the harddrive wirelessly?

I spent over an hour with Apple Tech support and they said that Finder/Spotlight WILL NOT search a networked drive. However, I did find a bit of a work around:
1. In Finder Preferences: General - Select check box - 'Always open folders in new window'
2. Open up a Finder window
3. Select Airport Extreme. (Left column, Shared, name of Airport base station)
4. Select networked drive
5. Double Click a folder in your network drive that you want to search (this opens new window)
6. In the new window, type what you need in the search window (upper right hand corner).
Remember: The Finder window will default to the 'This Mac' in the search column (light grey line below the Toolbar)
7. In the Search column, This Mac and Contents are selected in Dark Grey. You should see
Search: *This Mac* "folder name" Shared | Contents File Name
8. Now select "folder name". This will search the contents of the selected folder and bypass your Mac.
If there is an easier way, could you please explain. TIA

PS - If you try to select your networked drive in a new window as in step 5, this still won't work. You can only select specific folders within the drive. Lastly, you can move all your folders and files to 1 folder, however, this increases the search time (My network drive is 320GB in size and a search for 1 known file took just over 3 minutes).

Getting a White Screen at Start Up/no power is getting to any external devi

A few months ago, I purchased an older Mac Mini (Power PC) for my husband. Now when he tries to start the mac mini, he is getting a blank white screen. I also noticed that no power is getting to any external devices that are connected to this mac mini. During the startup, there is a quick flash of power to the keyboard and that is all. I have tried to following:
1. Full Reboot of the computer
2. Reset the RAM
3. Reset the PRAM
4. Reset the PMU
Still not getting any power to any device and still getting the white screen. On a side not, I can hear the computer starting up and I am getting a light on the mac mini.
Does anyone have any other ideas? I do have an appointment with the Genius Bar later this week. I am just trying to decide if I need to buy him a new computer or if this can be fixed.

Does it go straight to a white screen or does it make some intermediate screens, like gray, gray with a spinning wheel, blue...anything?

SATA/RAID connecting and applying

i've just bought a whole new computer, MSI motherboard VIA K8T800 neo series (MS6702 v1.0).
i'm having problems setting my SATA hdd.. from the manual i see that there should be some options during bootup where i enter the BIOS and activate the onboard option to enable using the SATA.. my problem is that i can't find the proper option under the Integrated Peripherals ->OnBoard PCI Controllers, it only shows the LAN and AC97 options with no RAID or SATA option to enable.
i've checked the connectors and everything is connected just fine, tried the other connector for the SATA hdd and changed between the power supply sockets.. no results :(
should i try to update the BIOS to some newer version, and if so which one do you recommend upon due to yer experience.

im however not sure about my SATA hdd if it's SATA I or II .. i got this one without a jumper, im not sure if its missing (and its SATA II) or if its SATA I and it should have nothing with the jumper.

Installing 10.4.11 on External Hard Drive Needs to be Firewire Bootable

I have a PB G4 1.67 ghz. 2 Gigs of Ram 100 Gig HD The main hard drive failed, the first hard drive to fail on me in 24 years. In the worst place at the worst time away from all my support, tools and software. It goes to Apple Care.
The Drive was partitioned into 3 sectors #1 for the system and the software that installs with 10.4. #2 for other applications and # 3 for mostly storing my work.
#1 died and I tried all the goodies Disk Warrior, which told me it was bad and did manage to save some things where to put them where I am not sure, but there in the trash, not emptied yet on my
iBook G4 1.1Ghz. I also tried Data Rescue, both seem to be good programs but need to be installed before the crash. So am pretty new software burned out. But whatever works the best.

I know how to format from Disk Utility, and install a new copy of 10.4.11.
I did keep pretty good backups of the Library so all my mailboxes, emails, address book, Keychain and all the essentials are there. Oh thank you..for those who say Back Up. I am going to be the back up Guru, after I get this one up and back into the world.
Now I used a simple drag and drop system to a separate hard drive, that I use just to back up these important files. Not flashy, but oh my gosh they are there. But they are on a seperate Hard Drive. Not the new one. No operating system on the back up hard drive and is only 50 Gigs. Only geez..
My question, what is the best way to get the essential files from Library on the Back Up Hard Drive on to the new fresh install of 10.4.11. On my new external 120 Gig Hitachi which is in a small little metal Firewire 400 and 800 case with the Oxford 922 chip.
I could simply drag and drop these files, a lot of manual labor, possible massive openings, but I want the best system and it seems there is software that is made to do not want this. But I am really burned out and do not want to learn another new piece of software that works pretty good for some and others like this.
I am open to ideas and do not want to create file folders within file folders or files within files, but it seems if I just drag and copy from the working Back Up files to the same empty folders , i.e. mail of the new Hard Drive applications , things should be OK ?? Ideas, don't do this...
I do have all my mailboxes, all 135 of them, plus the 10’s of thousands of messages that go with them and the info that goes into each box. The mail would probably be the most worrisom as it is rather big. Working on storage for that.
I have A New 120 Gigs HD, I had a 50 Gig partition before, and I was pushing that limit, mainly because of iPhoto and iTunes I was thinking 90 gig 20 gig and a small 9 gig Gig just for a small second install of a clean OS 10.4.11 just in case . This will ultimately be a storage drive as I am going to get a 160 Gig for the internal disk. But that is a repair trip away and I need to get this HD up and running be bootable

Ok my thinking on this has changed. To much time and too much trouble. Lets Just set up a new account set up the filters and boxes and get on with life.
I have the messages I restored, I will get more when there recovered off the hard disk that crashed is restored, so a long term solution is where I should be headed now.
Although I do not know what this means for getting my address book back and Keychain which is also very important and sort of goes along the line of mail importing.
So what is the recommendation for storing and being able to access in a similar manner large volumes of mail say 60,000 among 100 folders and then will grow.
I average 300 per day, much of it I want to save. I see I can save the messages I now have to any any folder I want, and if I save it in Rich Text then even a simple program like Text edit can open the message, read it and keep the proper format.
However, I by going to folders, I lose the strong search capability, that is so wonderful and strong in Mail and the threaded capability of messages that is also so wonderful when researching these letters to get the information I keep them for. Suggestions.? I have Office 08 but only use it when I have too. I have Apple works but it's getting dated. I am open to new programs. I prefer tested ones that last. There is some good shareware and I took a look at Mail Steward and have it. But shareware can come and go and for something as important as mail. I need proven product.
This storage of mail will keep my mail box size down, some had as much a 10 thousand letters. The nice thing about mail was you could search all that information so well. I know there are a fair multitude of shareware programs, but would like to keep it simple in a very stable program with the robustness of mail or even greater, but not a huge learning curve. Yes I want everything.
This is the real answer, backup is easy, but keep those mail files to where I can do a multitude of things with them and be safe. I think I read somewhere that Mail does not like more then a 1000 messages per Mailbox. That is small for my needs.
So suggestions from here, or start a new thread. Or. Plus should we go on to the keychain which is so vital. Plus address book. ??? Hopefully that will be easier.

If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc. you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod. I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.
