Need to install leopard on my macbook and superdrive is faulty

I recently upgraded my hard disk from 120 gb to 320 gb. After installing the new hard drive, tried to boot the machine using the original leopard disk. But the problem is that superdrive keeps ejecting the installation disk.
How can I install the operating system on the new 320 gb hard disk when the internal superdrive does not seem to be working.
Can you please suggest a solution?
Thanks in Advance

if I get an external dvd drive, will macbook recognize it via USB?
Also, can you please explain 'copying DVD to the MB'. What does MB stands for and how do I copy the leopard disk to MB.
I am sorry this is the first time that I have tried changing the hard drive in my mac and do not not know much about it.

My Mac has Snow Leopard 10.5.8. I want to install Mtn. Lion. Apple says I first need to install SL 10.6.8 and that it'll be available at Software Updates. It isn't (and I've installed every software update I can pull up.) Now what?

10.5.8 is Leopard. 10.6.x is Snow Leopard.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard you can still purchase a copy from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.] Ask for a Sales Representative.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
If you need to purchase Lion call 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. Ask for a Sales Representative. They will check your Apple ID, and email you a code and instructions.  The cost is $29.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download.

Does your Mac meet the requirements?
    Lion 10.7 System Requirements
        •    Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor (most models released since late 2006 - early Intel-based Macs with Core Solo or Core Duo processors aren't compatible)
        •    2GB of memory (recommend at least 4GB -- and ideally even more, as you'll see benefits in many computing tasks)
        •    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended) for Lion download from Apple App Store; or Leopard 10.5.x if using Lion on USB drive
        •    7GB of available space (10GB recommended)

  • I have tiger (10.4.11), and I would like to upgrade to snow leopard(10.6).  Do I need to install leopard(10.5) first?

Do i need to install leopard first? I was planning to but snow leopard off of amazon.

The Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should still be available from Apple for $20. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list.
If they no longer have any in stock you will have to buy it from eBay or Apple resellers that still have stock. But you will have to pay a premium since the DVDs are no longer being made. Snow Leopard DVDs are already up to $100 on Amazon.

  • Installing Leopard on New Macbook

I recently purchased the new Macbooks that came with Snow Leopard, but because they are going in a school enviroment and our software compatibility issues, I need to install leopard on them. I can get the device to boot and show me the retail install cd, but when I click the cd for install it freezes.
I suspect that the device is booting possibly in 64-bit mode and know I can hold down 32 to get it to boot in to 32-bit mode, but when I do that it wont then let me hold down the option key to access Boot Manager.
Any ideas or insight would be greatly appreciated...
    Background:
We recently purchased 25 of the new Macbook for distribution in a school enviroment. When the devices arrived I attempted to do a NetRestore from our Snow Leopard Server with the Leopard image that works on the older macbook models, but when it comes to this model (no firewire edition, suck) it gets a kernal panic error. So I was going to do a manual configuration on a single one of these devices and then use the image utility to create a new image, I could hopefully NetRestore with.

    So,
    Etresoft was correct.
After some troubleshooting and a call to AppleCare, some discoveries were made that were challenging. I was forced to install Snow Leopard and check the compatibility of our Education software to see if it would run without a problem and it did (thank God).
The next obsticle was creating the .nbi of the image off the "New Macbook" that no longer supported "Target Disk", with some discussion on the phone with the Apple Rep we both concluded this would only be possible if I were to install Snow Leopard on an external drive and then install the Snow Leopard Server Admin Tools and boot to that. Once that installation was complete, I was able to boot from the external and use the Image tility to get the new image off the device and moved over to our Snow Leopard Server.

  • Installing Leopard 10.5.1 and then updating OS

I have a new Macbook Pro and I need to install Leopard 10.5.1 for software compatibility reasons. I tried doing an install of Leopard 10.5.1 last night but it appeared not to work. Can I install Leopard 10.5.1 and then do the updates on my Macbook Pro? If so, what are the steps that I was missing the first time around?
    Thanks

Ok, you got me there. Missed that change. There are limitations, however. Here is the Apple KB article about it --> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1948
Note the warnings at the top of the article:
Intel-based Macs support starting from an external USB storage device's volume that:
    * Has been formated with a GUID partition type
    * Contains an installation of Mac OS X 10.4.5 or later, or Mac OS X 10.5 or later, which is compatible with (or shipped with) the Mac that the USB device is connected to. Note: You should not use a version of Mac OS X that is earlier ("older") than the version your Mac shipped with.

  • I have installed FCE on my macbook and on my desktop. Then I accidentally migrated FCE from the desktop to the macbook. Now each time I launch FCE on the macbook it asks for the product serial number. How can I stop this happening?

I installed Final Cut Epxress 4 on my laptop and my macbook and then accidentally also migrated FCE from the desktop to the macbook. Now each time I launch FCE on the macbook it asks for the software serial number. I enter the number which is then rejetced as it's already been used twice. FCE launches anyway as the licence info had already been written to my hard drive when I first installed FCE. How can I stop it asking for the serial nmber every time I open FCE?

You need to uninstall FCE from you Macbook and then reinstall it.
If you are not familiar with the process, FCS Remover is an app that can uninstall FCE for you.

  • Installing Leopard on a Macbook with a Windows partition

I've heard that if your Macbook is partitioned with windows, you will have problems when you try and install the new Leopard operating system. Is this true? Can I just simply place a leopard install disc into my computer and get the new operating system without worrying about anything?

It's nonsense. I installed Leopard on my partitioned and Boot Camped drive with no issues or problems.

    Klapschaats,
Unfortunately, the installation media that comes with your Mac will only work with that particular machine. These installation discs are not the same as a retail copy of Leopard. The retail installation disc can be installed on any supported machine. The installation media that came with your Macbook Pro for example has data on it meant only for that machine. Think of it also as something like an "OEM" disc for Windows when you purchase a machine from Dell. That particular installation disc is licensed only for that machine and contains files specifically for that machine.

  • Installing leopard as an 'archive and install' and problems!

I have just made and archive and install of leopard on my macbook and although the programme told me the installing had been accomplished without problems, the computer could not start up. Instead of starting up it entered a sort of loop where it displayed the Mac apple and had a weel spinning for some minutes, then the screen went black as if it restarted the computer and then it went back to the mac apple on a grey/blue background and the spinning weel.
Can anybody help me with this problem? What has gone wrong and how can a save my computer!

This is just my disaster day! I finally managed to get Leopard installed, but despite the fact that I did an 'archive and install' the installation process had not kept my files intact - most of my work files have gone it seems and the Leopard did start all over keeping none of my settings at all.
I have now looked in the previous systems folder and only some files and settings are seemingly stored, but I don't know how to 'reinstall' them on my computer.
I must admit that Mac very much resembles macrisoft products in this case. What a disaster!

Is X-windows and GUI desktops supported on the ODA "engineered system" running a RAC database?  If it is, what is the yum command needed to install the X-windows, Gnome, and KDE package groups?

While I agree with the direction of the suggestions with installing packages for X-windows, we do not have a blanket 'apply any package' recommendation.
In particular we do not support altering the kernel (although we do have exceptions which we review on a case by case basis).
Basically, if the you want to alter functionality that would not impact core functionality you are usually fine.
A good guideling is : The more dependencies that there are between the package / rpm you are considering using the higher the potential impact on functionality - meaning higher chance for problems
Note: We do use VNC including Real and Tiger regularly , but we have no hard recommendation on how you may want to use X-windows. I have never seen a limitation other than comments on bugs
or incompatibility within the X-window product itself with certain kernel levels.
Patching may overwrite some packages that you may install, however,  _depending on packages/rpms added_ there is also the possibility that you will break existing functionality to the point
that patching itself will fail ( we have already seen a few cases of this in which case the proper mitigation is to remove / roll-back any alterations to the ODA before patching, and then adding the packages/rpms
back after the patching is completed.
From what you are discussing the impact should be low without conflicts, but please consider the above, and if you have specific packages which you consider potential problems
please create an SR so that we can review packages / rpms on an individual basis.
Once again: the main criteria for not supporting rpms is regarding the kernel itself
    Chuck
