Need to Install Snow Lion on iMac that has Lion Installed

I just bought a 27" May 2011 iMac that came with Lion. I bought a copy of Snow Leopard that I need to install to run my programs. I've created a separate partition to load SL onto. Now what? Will it install even though Lion doesn't have Rosetta?

Lloyd Lathrop wrote:
I don't understand why I can't just install SL onto the empty partition I created on the hard drive like I did with my G5 (I have Tiger on one partition and Leopard on the other).
Because you normally can't install a operating system OLDER than the one that came with the machine.
You got Tiger and Leopard, because the machine came with Tiger and then the new OS went onto another partition. No problem.
Becuase 10.7 came out mid-product cycle, there are machines of the same hardware that originally ran 10.6, then 10.7 was installed on them, so because the hardware is the same, 10.6 or 10.7 can be installed on them, provided you have a method to get by the firmware.
Your firmware will not let you boot from the 10.6.3 to install or any pre-10.7 disk for that matter.
The 10.6.3 disk only has hardware drivers for pre-10.6.3 issued machines. 10.6.4 and later comes on machine specific disks from Apple.
So you have to follow the link for the "the procedure" which you basicially combine the 10.6.3 and the 10.6.8 combo update together then Firewire target disk mode it to a empty partition. Which means you need another Mac.
Once it's on the drive it will boot, the firmware won't stop that, it only prevents pre-10.7 disks from booting.
That's my understanding of it, in the thread there are others posts how they got it working on iMac's too.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3264421?start=0&tstart=0
The easiest way to install 10.6 would be to call Apple and ask for the replacement 10.6.4+ machine specific disks, however they could consult their records and see it's a refurb and it orginally came with 10.7 and deny you, but you can certainly TRY as that's the easier method than making the combined disks.
Another method would be to search high and low for another user with a Mid 2011 iMac and the machine specific 10.6.4+ disks. Even if you did this, you STILL need to use Firewire target disk mode because the firmware will block you from booting from any pre-10.7 disk.
But once you got 10.6.8 on the machine it will boot and you can clone it and option key boot from the clone and reverse clone.
You have everything, just you perhaps don't have the ability to go about it, you might find the assistance of local Mac geek that can do it for you.

Why do you need to re-install? Try to fix the problem.
I would assume a 10.2 full install would be fairly cheap on ebay.

Any suggestions on which version to download?

There are no downloads(aside from updaters in Software Update.) You need to purchase a iLife 09 or earlier DVD or install iPhoto from the computer's original disks.

  • IPod was synced with IMac that has died.

My Ipod was synced with my IMac that has completely died and now I am trying to resync it with my Windows Vista machine. I was primary using my IMac but now I must use my Windows Machine and when I try to sync my iTunes library it wants to reformat my IPod. The library on my Windows machine is a old copy of my music and if I reformat my Ipod I will lose over 400 songs that are on my IPod and not on my Windows machine. Is there anyway I can get my IPod to again work with my IMac without reformatting it?

    Hello leftwir,
No. A Mac formatted iPod, cannot be read or written to on a Windows Machine. If you want to make that possible, you'll need the help of some third party software such as [XPlay|http://www.mediafour.com/products/xplay]. If you go that route, you'll need to copy the music from the iPod Nano over to your iTunes library on your Vista computer.
If you can't or are unwilling to go that route, your only other option is to salvage the music off your iMac's hard drive and copy it over to your Windows computer.

  • I have an Intel based iMac that has just developed two small spots on the screen. One 1/8" circle at bottom and a tiny circle at top.  The fading on and off light isn't working anymore either.  Does anyone know anything about this?

I have an Intel based iMac that has just developed two small spots on the screen - they look light brighter spots on the screen. One 1/8" circle at bottom right and a tiny circle at top right.  The fading on and off light on area surrounding the screen isn't working anymore either.  Has anyone else had similar problems?  Any solutions?  Thanks!

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

I have a late 2006 iMac that has just started giving me a message to reboot after a black screen comes down slowly from the top top of the screen to the bottom.  I reloaded software and restored from Time Machine, but it keeps happening, now several tomes a day.  Any insight as to the issue or a proposed solution?

Unplug any peripherals you have except your keyboard, reboot, and check activity monitor for apps.  Keep running apps to a minimum to find the App causing the issue.

I think iCloud isn't coming until this fall and not until iOS 5 is publicly available. Right now there is confusion because all this stuff is still in beta and things are under NDA and may still change.
I'd just set the 3GS up the same as currently. When iOS 5 is available in the fall (and I don't think Apple has specified beyond "fall"), before you update, there should be any number of guides to setting things up and how it will all work. http://macworld.com is a good place to look for such information.

  • How do I transfer my applications from a 2010 iMac to a new 2013 iMac that has a Fusion Drive?

What is the best way to transfer my Applications from a 2010 iMac to a 2013 iMac that has a Fusion Drive. I am particularly concerned about losing all my old mail. My documents have already been transferred.

The best way is to make a backup of your old iMac. Do this either by cloning to an external hard drive through SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. OR Use Time Machine.
Then set up your new iMac using either Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant.
    See this link for more.

  • I recently purchased a 2013 Macbook Air, when I want to install a new copy, it says I need to sign in with an Id that has purchased mountain lion, help?

    Question says it all

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Did you purchase a second-hand Mac? If so, this is the answer. You need to purchase Mountain Lion by reinstalling the original Mac OS X version that came with your MacBook.
If you didn't purchase a second-hand Mac and you have a Mid 2012 or Mid 2013 MacBook Air, make sure you started up in Recovery HD and that you are using the Apple ID you used to set up your MacBook Air. Another option is to use Internet Recovery (hold Command, Option and R keys while your Mac is starting), because some users said it doesn't require any Apple ID.
If this doesn't work, contact with the Mac App Store support > http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact

  • Can my iMac that has 3gb of memory run lion and lightroom

Can I run lion and lightroom on my iMac. the computer only sees 3bg of ram

    I sincerely doubt it!
You have a 2006 model iMac that can only handle up to 3 GBs of RAM.
OS X, by itself, needs between 2-4 GBs of RAM to do its stuff smooth, quickly and efficiently.
Every update and iteration of OS X uses more CPU, GPU, RAM and hard drive resources.
You start running a high resource app, like Lightroom, along with OS X and your iMac is going to take a pretty good hit on performance.
It all boils down to not having nearly enough RAM memory for the application and tasks you require.
Here are the Minimum specs for installing OS X 10,7 Lion
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4949
Here are the minimum specs for Adobe Lightroom
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom/tech-specs.html
You would need at least 6 GBs of RAM to be able to run OS X and Lightroom
Based on your previous post, you must be taking a serious performance hit already running Lightroom or Photoshop.

  • How do I remove migrated PPC apps from Intel iMac that has the same apps?

Before I begin, please know that I've read a lot of previous posts but all the posts only had some of what I needed so I'm posting this as a new topic. OK, here I go:
My PPC running 10.5 just froze-up (that has since been solved) but in the process of solving that issue, I migrated everything as a different user (User B) INCLUDING my applications, to my Intel iMac - my iMac that also had the same applications on it - except they were intel versions and they were under User A.
So I essentially did an archive and clean install on my PPC.
Then, using Migration Assistant, I transferred User B onto my PPC. Now both of my computers have duplicates of most of my applications. In trying to fix this issue, I found out I should NOT have transferred my applications. So now I'm very confused as to which apps I should remove off my PPC and which I should remove off my intel iMac.
If I just delete User B from my intel iMac, that's easy enough but will that remove the dupes? I have a funny feeling it doesn't.
And then, which do I remove from my PPC?
AND THEN, are there other things I will need to remove from different places on my computer?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
And now, I've used migration assistant to move everything from user (B) back to my PPC. Now I have duplicate applications with "(from old mac)"

Normally application go in the Applications folder at the top level of the hard drive, not in any user folders. If you have applications in user folders that are the same as those in the Applications folder, you can delete them from the user folders. If you actually migrated PPC applications into the Applications folder on an Intel Mac, it would have replaced the Intel versions. To fix that, you would have to reinstall OSX on the Intel Mac.
The same thing would apply on the PPC Mac.

  • What is the latest, older model iMac that has a DVI port. I do not want a Mini-Display Port

I want to use an iMac for my seminar. My projector only accepts VGA connections. I currently use my MacBook Pro using a cable that has DVI Male on one end and VGA Male on the other.  I can't get a Mini-Display to VGA adapter.
What is the latest, older iMac that I can buy that has a DVI-D output? All the new models at the Apple Store have Mini-Display ports only.
    Thank you.
    www.ImagineThatToo.Org

The Early 2008 iMacs were the last models with DVI output. They have a mini-DVI port.
However, Apple sells mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapters, as do 3rd party developers.
