Need to keep two paragraph styles on same line

Coming from Ventura and need to recreate all publications in Indesign - can't find the equivalent of "breaks - line break: none".  Need to keep two paragraph styles on same line.

Like Ventura, FrameMaker has been able to do this for decades.
You're correct about zero leading being inadequate, if not only in appearance, but also for maintaining the document through changes, especially if someone other than you needs to edit it.
Nested styles are logical to create and use. Search Google for terms like "InDesign nested styles," without quotes, for lots of links to tutorials and details.
If you need to create TOC entries for each of the two parts of text in this example, even after formatting with a nested style, InDesign's TOC will see only the single paragraph. If that works, OK. If you want to be able to create a TOC reference to each part, you'll have to create hidden text for each part, and you'll need to create a paragraph style for each, as well. This is because InDesign's TOC only captures complete paragraphs.
[EDIT] If you think this is an important feature enhancement that should be included in a future InDesign release, post a formal feature request in the form here: WISH.[/EDIT]

InDesign cannot create side-by-side paragraphs. The only viable work-around is to use tables.
I do miss Ventura a lot. For others, basically side-by-side paragraphs are successive paragraphs (one below the other) that the paragraph style can then format so they are next to each other, out in the margin as callouts, etc.

  • Multiple paragraph styles in one line

I'm creating a training manual and I am having trouble with paragraph styles. Here's an example of what I am trying to do:
"The Dog walks up the hill"
In the above example, I have created a style for the bolded text and connected it my table of contents. The idea is when I create and update the TOC, "The Dog" will be the entry with the remaining text omitted from the TOC. The issue I am having is because the text is on one line, I cannot have multiple styles. I've tried writing just "The Dog" and then either changing the style or deleting the paragraph break to connect the text below to the main line. Once I erase the paragraph break and the text is on one line, only ONE style is maintained. Now, I can modify the character style; however, because the paragraph style is still the one connected to the TOC, the entire paragraph appears in the TOC.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I've searched everywhere to no avail.
Thank you very much for your support.

It depends on the breed of dog.
Is the paragraph always a single line?
Is this dog the leader of the pack? IE, does the phrase you want to keep always begin the paragraph? If so, then you can separate the dog from the pack in the TOC. One way is to surround the pack with a unique character or marker in the main text, like End Nested Style Here, - one after dog, and another after hill, and create a paragraph style for the doggie paragraph to use in the TOC. This paragraph should contain a nested character style that applies microscopic text properties, like paper character color, font .1pt, and horizontal scale .1%. The TOC entries should use nested paragraph styles; the source paragraphs need you to insert the End Nested Style Here markers. The nested style definition in the TOC paragraph styles should apply no character style through the first end nested style marker, then apply microscopic through the next end nested style marker. This will shrink the walks...hill text to an invisible speck, so small that it shouldn't interfere with tab leaders and page-references.
Another approach is to use a single-row table for the heading, with the dog pent nicely in the left cell, and the pack in the right cell. Each cell contains a paragraph, so only extract the dog to the TOC.
Search Google for terms like "InDesign hide part of paragraph in toc knowhowpro," "InDesign suppress part of paragraph in contents knowhowpro," "InDesign two paragraph styles on one line," and similar phrases without quotes for some good discussions and a variety of approaches that include layers, anchored frames, and conditional text.
Search Google for terms like "InDesign conditional text," and "InDesign nested paragraph styles," without quotes for details.
http://forums.adobe.com/message/3206266 has a long discussion that may shed some additional light.

  • Keep a paragraph on the same page as the previous paragraph

I know I can keep a paragraph on the same page as the next paragraph but I need to create a paragraph style that keeps a paragraph of the same page as the PREVIOUS paragraph. Is there anyway to do this?
I used to be able to do it using my "old" M$ Windows DTP package.

    Hi Possum,
This works. Here is a screen shot from Pages with "Show Invisibles" (the blue spaces and paragraph marks):
Line spacing is set in Inspector to add space after each paragraph without adding blank lines (it's better that way).
Dish Title, all descriptions, Price and the blank line below are set to "Keep with following paragraph".
Do not include the final blank line (which is really blank) in this linking.
Type this in Pages. Copy everything and then repeatedly Paste. See if the new pages appear as you want them.

    Ian.

  • Two paragraph style in one script?

    Hi all,
I have two paragraph styles, the first is applied to first, 3°, 5°, ... lines, and the second to second, 4°, 6°, 8°... lines.
how i can group them in the one script?
Please revert if you have not clear.
    Thanks & Regards

    Just in case sorour needs it to do something more complicated, it's simply<br /><br />>for (var i=0; i<app.activeDocument.selection[0].paragraphs.length; i++)<br /><br />>  if ((i & 1) == 0)<br /><br />>    app.activeDocument.selection[0].paragraphs[i].appliedParagraphStyle = "style a";<br /><br />>  else<br /><br />>    app.activeDocument.selection[0].paragraphs[i].appliedParagraphStyle = "style B";<br /><br />>next i<br /><br />Select all paragraphs and run the scriptette.<br />This script, and any other solution, runs on <br />i paragraphs,<br />not <br />i lines.<br />Note the distinction; you can't apply a paragraph style to a single line, only to paragraphs. If you intended something for consecutive lines in a single paragraph, it'll get a bit more complicated.

  • How do i keep my paragraph style list from growing without my permission?

Im trying to keep my Paragraph styles organized. Everytime I add a table into my pages document it adds a new header or body eventhough all the fonts in the table are already set up with the paragraph styles that are in the document. Also it wont let me delete the style so I have to rename it and i do so with putting zzz in front of it so it goes to the bottom of the list. unfortnately, i can not figure this out.

Just go back to the main Discussions page and scroll down through the different forums and you'll find it

  • How do I use multiple paragraph styles in one line?

I'm working on my thesis in APA style.  I'm creating a Table of Contents with the help of Pages.  When you get to Level 3 in APA headings (no problems with Levels 1 and 2) it needs to look like this:
[0.5in Indent] Masculinities in higher education.  For men, the college experience.... (paragraph starts on same line as the heading).
I created a paragraph style for the (bolded) heading above [Heading 3].  When I do this, like magic the heading shows up in the table of contents (yeah!).  However when I do this the rest of the paragraph shows up too (boo!).  When I highlight to change the just rest of the paragraph (not the heading) to the style "Body" it changes the heading too and removes it from the table of contents.  How can I make 2 paragraph styles work together in the same paragraph so I can use the tale of contents tool??  Surly there is a work-around.
    Pages 5

As the name implies, paragraph styles are not intended to be used on a unit smaller than a paragraph. Therefore if you want the TOC to be automatically generated then you need to have distinct  paragraphs... as you specify the APA style with the content and heading continuous then you will have to manually create the TOC.

  • I'm trying to create a running header to pick up one of two paragraph styles...

I have a Header_1 and a Header_11 paragraph style. I need the running header to pick up either instance of those; as it stands, InDesign can only pick up one style at a time...

You have to define a running header based on a character style and apply
the char style to your titles.
Alternatively, you could create 2 master pages with two different
    paragraph-based running header text variables.

  • Problem:  Photoshop CS6 applies two paragraph styles when one is selected

    Hi everyone,
When I change the heading title within my text box, I select the heading and then select the appropriate style.  Instead of just changing the heading, the body text changes as well.  Is there a setting that's causing this to happen?
Thanks so much for your help!

First Bug: Simply having a layer selected (even a text layer) and then clicking the "Create New Paragraph Style" will create a generic style (with default settings). You have to tell Photoshop what settings it is that you want to create a style with. Simply double-click the text layer icon (not the layer name or the blank area around it) and this will open the text layer for editing and select the text. Now when you click the "Create New Paragraph Style" button, the settings of the selected text will be made into a style. This is how they are performing the step in the video as well, but from your description it sounds like you are skipping a step. And remember, there are two different ways of creating text: single click the Text tool to create line (character) text, click and drag a text box to create paragraph text. That is why we have both Character Styles and Paragraph Styles.
Second Bug: The Paragraph Style is applying with your text transformations calculated. So, if you create a text style that uses a 24 pt font, then you create text and transform it so that it 200% larger, when you apply the style you will end up with a font that is at 48 pts. A 50% transformation will result in a 12 pt font, etc.
Third Bug: Not sure why that is happening to you. My Mac uses half as much RAM and doesn't run into that problem. My guess is it would have to do with the fonts you have installed on the system. Do you still see this behavior if you disable all the fonts on your system (through Font Book or your favored font managment utility)? Your suggestion that it may have something to do with Fonnnnt Shop or WebInk may be true to. Just because they aren't open currently doesn't mean they haven't modified Photoshop and the way it runs.

  • Need to keep two mono channels separated when exporting to mini-dv

I need to export a project to tape, but I need to keep the two mono channels separated. When I go back to check the audio channels have been mixed. The VO has to remain separate from the rest of the audio (music & sfx), because the client intends to create a another translation of the video.
I'm using FCP6, and I am connected to the deck via firewire. I'm uncertain as to whether my problem lies in FCP settings or in the deck settings (I've searched my deck manual and can't find anything mentioned on this matter). Any help would be appreciated.

Honestly, the only way I have to capture it is to recapture what I just exported and look at the audio channels
This sounds more complicated than it needs to be. To what are you capturing, a camera or a deck? Either way, you must be capable of playing back the tape on whatever machine you have and monitor it from that using headphones at the very least.

  • SAPScript: How to combine two text in the same line?

    Dear Gurus,
I have a case to combine hard code text and long text in the same line.
For example, i need to display following line:
    'Project name:' <long_text>
How to do it in SAPScript?
Can we do it with following code?
/: 'Project name: ' INCLUDE Z_TEST OBJECT TEXT ID ST LANGUAGE &NAST-SPRAS&
    Thanks & Regards,
    Ari

    Hi,
You can achieve that by this method,
    Goto Tcode SO10
Give the Object Name 'Z_TEST' & Id
See the Paragraph format for the Text,  you can do it from Menu
Format>Line . If it is /: change it to =.  Save
Now in the SAPScript Text editor in which you want to print
    P1 'Project Name :'
/: INCLUDE Z_TEST OBJECT TEXT ID ST LANGUAGE &NAST-SPRAS&
    the output will be
    Project name : Abc xyz

  • Two fields on the same line in sreen programming

    Hi All,
I need to create a selection screen which would have two fields (their texts and their irespective input fields) in the same line, on the screen.
I was able to achieve this by using code--
    SELECTION-SCREEN BEGIN OF LINE.
    SELECTION-SCREEN COMMENT 1(31) text-a04.
    PARAMETERS: sch_begd LIKE qppnp-begda.
    SELECTION-SCREEN COMMENT 52(22) text-a05.
    PARAMETERS: sch_endd LIKE qppnp-endda.
    SELECTION-SCREEN END OF LINE.
This could allign the fields - start date (text-a04) and end date (text-a05) in the same line along with their input fields.
But I am facing two issues with this code-
    1. I am not able to get the underline same as we get when we create selection screen using 'select-options' and 'parameters'.
    2. This is causing accessibility issues, as the field text and the input field are no more linked (since I am using text element to display the field text, like for start date), it cannot find the text to be read for the input field and hence the checkman errors.
Please suggest how to achieve the same.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Arpita.

    Hi Arpita,
Are you trying to have select-option field in your screen in dialog programming?
If yes than you can use the following approach else ignore this.
Create one screen (100) and create subscreen area on this screen and call this subscreen in PAI and PBO of screen
Using call subscreen check F1 help for calling subscreen in PAI and PBO.
Now you should create your selection screen on the subscreen use selection screen begin of screen (100) option of defining
selection screen and then add your selection options here.

  • Need to get 2 fields displaying on same line, but close together

hi -- I have 2 related fields that I want to display on the same line -- the first has length of 10, the second length of 20.
On the same page, I also have some fields that are length 100.
Let's call my first field ID and my second field NAME. I want NAME to display quite close to ID (maybe about 5 characters apart).
I have its Begin On New Line = NO in display attritutes, Field = YES, and col and row span = 1.
But the field of length 100 -- let's call it BIG -- causes problems. NAME displays way out to the right, beyond the end of BIG.
I've tried setting the column span on BIG to 3 or 4; it helps a bit, but not much.
I'm not sure how column widths on a page (if there is such a thing) are defined, but I'd like to get NAME displaying in the
column after ID (or close to it, whatever will help me do this), where the space between ID and NAME is maybe 5 or 10 characters.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks much,
    carol

hi Denes -- I've looked extensively at your example, and I think I understand conceptually what needs to happen. But I'm not
quite getting yet. I've been playing around alot with the column span of the various items on my page... I'm wondering if you'd
take a look at something I posted on apex.oracle.com. (workspace dew_mir, user [email protected], pswd labitu). Application 30636
    Field LOV Display, page 2.
Of the left fields, Site Name, Site Common Name and Description are col span of 3. Latitude, Longitude, Elevation, Date Time Loaded
and Date Format are col span of 2. The rest (the short ID fields) are 1.
Objecttype Name and Lat Name represent the fields I want displaying further to the left. I'd expect Objecttype Name to
be rendered after the end of the first column, which I would think would be just to the left of the short ID fields. Instead,
it looks like it starts after the 2 column fields. For Lat Name, I'd expect that to be rendered at the end of the second column,
which I'd think would be just to the left of the lat/long/elevation fields, but it's after the 3 column fields.
Clearly there's something I don't understand about how columns are set up.
    Thanks,
    Carol
