Need to load Windows on an iMac, Advice please...

The boss has VMFusion and needs to load it on his iMac, I've never done this so need a 101.
Thanks in advance,
Geoff

No. VMware Fusion uses virtual hard drive image files. Windows (or whatever) guest OS you are installing mounts and uses these image files as if they are real hard drives. The image files are store on your Mac's hard drive volume, like any other file (except they tend to be bigger than most files). Setting up these image files is part of the wizard for adding a new virtual machine.
So there are no separate partitions being used, unless you want to install the guest OS on a separate partition. You can use VMware Fusion that way, but it is far more flexible to use the hard drive image files. For one thing, using the image files, you can install as many virtual machines as you want, limited only by the Mac's storage capacity. So you can have one for Windows XP, one for Windows 7, one for Ubuntu Linux, etc.

    Expansion Slots 4 PCI slots
    Display ATI Radeon 9000 Pro
    - VRAM 64 MB DDR
    - AGP 4x
    LaCie external DVD Burner.
I'm planning on doing the following:
I'm on a limited budget, can only afford to spend around $300.00
I Want to add 3 more 512 MB Sticks of the Kingston KTA-G4333/512 PC2700 Ram.
Also, I Want to Replace my 80 GB HD with either of the following:
2 - Seagate 160 or 250 GB SATA drives/8 MB Cache on the Rear Bays
And a - SIIG SATA PCI Controller Card (SIISCSATM12S)
    OR;
1 Seagate 160 GB ATA/100 8 MG Cache drive in the ATA/100 Bus Rear Bay.
And 1 Seagate 160 GB ATA/100 8 MG Cache drive in the front ATA/66 Bus Bay.
    My Question:
(Which would be better performance wise and for stability?)
I only want to have 2 internal Hard Drives so my Mac won't over heat.
I'm planning on Cloning my 80 GB drive to one of the new drives using Super Duper.
After that, I'll store the drive until I can afford to get an external OWC case for it.
I want to use the second new drive for a Photoshop Scratch disk and for temp video file work.
    Under 10.3.9 - I use:
    Photoshop CS2
    Toast 7
    Popcorn 1.0.3
    VisualHUB
On occasion I still boot into OS 9 for Photoshop 5.5., QuarkXPress 3.2.2 r5 and Adobe Illustrator 7.
I don't foresee being able to afford a Mac Pro and don't want to get a used G5 anytime
soon. I'm hoping my G4 will last me a few more years.
I suspect putting a ATA/100 drive on the ATA/66 Bus might hamper performance. And suspect using a SATA controller card in a "PCI" slot isn't as good as having a True SATA Bus, performance wise either.
I was just wondering which would be the better way to go for performance and stability?
The drives will be probably OEM either at OWC or NewEgg.
I'd really appreciate some help with this. Thank You.

With those applications and the intended purpose for the 2d drive, i.e. video and PS scratch, then go SATA. No question, best performance (without considering the cost of SCSI) to be found with SATA even using a PCI SATA controller. PATA been left behind, no ones doing development anymore.
I would suggest partitioning that 2d drive because PS and FS scratch disks are different in kind. FS needs unfragmented media, otherwise dropped frames and sync issues. PS scratch media are temporary and messy.
Depending on the drives and card, SATA drives should bench (with something like Intech QuickBench) at the high end of around 80-90 MB/sec. I haven't bought a PATA HD in years, but best I ever saw was around 60 MB/sec. 80-90 MB/sec is still very good even if say you can bench better in Mac Pro.
The Siig card you're considering is solid. I've used it in both 10.4 and 10.5, but only used it to boot in 10.4.x, never in Leopard. I had some issues with it my others cards, but easily solved by swapping placement.
I also have the two-port Sonnet Tempo, which is actually just a purple Firmtek Seritek 2-port card. I bought the Siig first, having to get it (and a bunch of other stuff) shipped overseas. I later bought the Sonnet because I could get it locally although for a higher price; with overseas taxes, customs, etc. for only the card --- it's a wash.
Anyway, I have two WD SE16 750GB drives in my MDD 1.25 Dual, which were originally on the Siig. With the Siig, QuickBench (I run the big 100MB files) showed 70+ MB/sec Read, around 55+ MB/sec Writes. I was a bit disappointed about the Writes. When the Sonnet arrived, I swapped and ran QuickBench again. With the Sonnet I see both Reads and Writes at 80+ MB/sec.
So as far as benchmarks go, the Sonnet/Firmtek wins. (I know Firmtek has a line of internal cards, including a 4 port version.) But I can't say I noticed any huge difference in everyday tasks. I had some sleep issues with Sonnet/Firmtek in 10.4.x, which was solved by downgrading the firmware.
I have FC Studio, but I capture to externals via eSATA.
I still have the Siig, it's in my MDD 1.0 Dual used as a file and Time machine server. Has a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB on it which doesn't bench to well on the Siig, but I haven't tried bench testing it with the Sonnet.
    Hope that helps.

  • Need to run windows on new imac with lion.  where do i get windows for mac?

I have a new iMac and am new to Apple after 30+ years with PC-based hardware & software.  First of all, and not to offend, but anyone who says Mac computers are easier to use than Windows computers must be talking about people who just came out of the jungle and are seeing their first computer.  Sorry, I just needed to get that off my chest.  That aside, I have legacy software that I need to run on the Mac (actually, one of the programs is CALLED Legacy).  I'm told that if I want to use Bootcamp or Parallels software I need to install Windows on the Mac.  Is that a special kind of Windows made for Mac, or will just any old Windows do?  I've checked Bing and Google but they're so "ad-crazed" that I couldn't find anything.
I'm sure that, after 30 more years, I'll probably have the Mac OS down and find Windows 21 (or whatever they'll call it) to be difficult to use. .

Nope. Any flavor should work including both 32- and 64-bit versions. See these for more:

  • Need HELP with Windows on my iMac.  Thanks.

I'm an experienced Windows user. I bought the iMac 20" Duo Core 2 (2.16ghz) because of the hardware and the design. I want to use Windows XP Pro (then Vista) almost exclusively.
PROBLEM: Windows installed and worked PERFECTLY (without the Mac OS or Boot Camp. I also installed the Mac drivers for Windows. Everything went beautifully UNTIL I started installing the Windows drivers for my external firewire sound equipment. Then the computer wouldn't fully boot. Every manufacturer I spoke with concerning my external equipment said that they did NOT plan to update their drivers to use Windows on a Mac. They said that there are problems and issues with the new Duo Core 2 processor in a Mac running Windows. These are DRIVER issues that may never be addressed by individual equipment manufacturers.
QUESTION: Do I need to reinstall the Mac OS and keep it updated in order to avoid conflicts with Windows' use of the Mac hardware? Or can I simply install Windows only, and try for workarounds?
Thank you very much for your replies.

Thank you, Eric, for your VERY helpful reply.
I've reinstalled Windows XP Pro S2, and got the system up and running again.
The problem I initially had was with the M-Audio Firewire Solo external soundcard. Once the driver was installed, the computer locked during booting. The M-Audio tech I spoke with was exceptionally knowledgeable, and he said they were working on updated drivers for both the Mac and the PC, but not for Windows on a Mac.
The problem could be that the firewire port uses the same IRQ as the hard drive. Although there isn't technically a conflict, the firewire port could be interfering with the boot when it's connected to a phantom-powered unit. And this unit cannot be hot-wired. However, the computer locked simply upon installing the driver with no unit connected.
I've decided to change over to a external soundcard that uses USB instead. I'm hoping this will solve the problem.
I purchased this computer for digital audio recording in Windows. If there are more conflicts that I cannot workaround, I'm going to have to return it and get a PC-based Intel desktop system. I don't want to do that however. I really, REALLY like this machine. But I need it to work with my equipment.
BTW, I've searched the other forums here on Apple.com. Several people have written in about the problems they've had with both the firewire and USB ports - using the MAC OS. So it's not just a conflict with Windows.
I really appreciate your reply. Thanks again.

  • Buying a new iMac, advice please :)

    Hey all,
I will be purchasing my first iMac soon after many years I'm changing from PC's and Microsoft and headin over to iMacs.
I am looking in to buying the 2.7Ghz Intel Core i5 I would be using
    Mostly for music and gaming.
I was wondering would I need to increase the ram from 4 to 8GB or would this not be necessary? Also is there any others changes that you think I should make or a better time to buy one? I want to make sure it is the right choice before info ahead and purchase it.
Any advice would be really handy!
    Cheers and thanks

  • Need to upgrade my hardward...advice please?

BeeJay just answered a similar question, but this is slightly different. Help is appreciated...
The new Mac Pros are up, which I'm sure we've all seen, and I have been holding out.
    I'm running currently, Logic 7, on dual 2.3G processors, on a G5, 10.4.11
I'm budgeting around $2500, and I'm going to upgrade to Logic 8.
Should I go with the the brand new Quad-Core
    Mac Pro Quad Core
One 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processor
    3GB (three 1GB) memory 640GB hard drive 1 18x double-layer SuperDrive
or macmall.com is selling the (now older)
    Mac Pro 8-Core Workstation - 2 Quad-Core 2.8GHz Intel Xeon Processors, 2GB RAM, 320GB HD, 16x SuperDrive, OS X 10.5 Leopard
You know what I mean? I could go with the quad core brand spanking new with more memory but one less processor, or go with the older dual quad core for the same price. Will I be frustrated with the older one because it becomes obsolete now, or will I be frustrated with the single quad core?
    Any advice???Please?

Sorry pmelley if I sounded rough about it. I said you cant go wrong with either choice. My point was that any new Mac Pro you buy will not be obsolete for a long time. You used the word FRUSTATED and I was trying to CALM your CONCERN. I also get STRESSED when I buy electronics because I also do alot of research. I spent alot for my 8 core and my extra RAM so I know how you feel. Just remember these new Macs are way ahead of any software currently available. Once again I apologize.

  • I need help with windows 8 on my pc, PLEASE!

HI, i have windows 8 on my pc. I've been playing games on my computer for 8 months since I bought it. I woke up the other day got on Big Fish to play my games as always, and ever time I push play it starts up then immediately goes back to the play. What
is going on? The game won't stay on the screen, I've tried everything to fix it, please help me.

    Hi,
I guess you're referrring to a game named  "Big Fish" which is installed in your system, and it stops working, right?
Here're solutions I found on the Big Fish forum:
    Check error message.
    Update your video card driver.
Kill the game via Task Manager, restart the game.
    Run the game as Administrator.
    Reinstall the game.
It's recommended to post this issue in Big Fish Forum for they're more familiar with this product.

  • Loading Windows XP

I'm in the process of purchasing my first iMac. Unfortunately, I need to load Windows XP while I move applications to the Mac. If Parallel is running, can I simply load Windows XP or do I need a special version of XP for the iMac?

As a fellow switcher from PC to Mac... some tips for getting started.
First, make sure your XP install CD is a legit and "retail" copy - far less chances of any issues with the virtual machine. Any version of XP (Home, Media Center, Pro) will work - but for the ability to tweak the system, Pro is the best choice.
A couple tips for setting up / using Parallels - Shared Files alone is sufficient for passing data files between the PC and Mac environments (keep all the data on the Mac side for easier backup); the other option - Shared Profile - makes things too confusing. Don't use Parallels' 'suspend / resume' functions for the virtual machine as that is the most YMMV prone feature; shut it down like it was a real PC.
I shouldn't need to point this out, but even though it may be a 'virtual' installation, this Windows installation will still need antivirus and spyware blockers. Parallels will offer to install the Kaspersky security suite (else you can install something like ClamAV or AVG)...
Like you, I once had almost everything on the PC side, but I'm down to a handful of apps (mostly M$) that have no equivalents in the Mac world or I don't want to give up.
Good luck and enjoy the ride.

  • I need to install windows on my mac for a programme I have to use.. Do I just need to buy a windows 7 cd or is there more to it?

    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows
XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  For Boot Camp
4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

My nb205-311/W crashed and I need to re-load Windows, but don't have a disc. Does anyone know if the laptop comes with one? Don't remember there being one in the box.
Does anyone know where I can get one? I cannot find any way to actually contact Toshiba to request one.
Thanks for any and all help and advice!!!

They don't come with a physical disk these days, and haven't for several years.  They come with a app to create them from a hidden partition on the hard drive, but that also requires an external USB DVD Burner.  Otherwise you can go to this post to find out how to order replacement media.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Windows 7 on iMAC 27" , I need help in the decision please?

    Hi All,
I just got the iMAC 27" i7 with 4GB RAM and planning to upgrade to 8GB soon. I need to install Windows, but as I heard that BOOTCAMP supports vista and windows 7 is not officially supported,
    should i go for vista?
or try to install windows 7? what are the issues?
    * If windows 7, should I go to Windows 7 64bit & why?
I do really need some guidance in this one....

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
Apples BootCamp lets you install a 32-bit Windows XP with at least SP2 or Windows Vista onto an Intel-based Mac.
And 64-bit Windows Vista on these Macs http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846
Windows 7 support is currently in the pipeline.
See the Tech Specs of BootCamp here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1899
And the announcement of Windows 7 support http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3920
Personally I use XP 32-bit and never had any problem.
I avoided Vista since I don't need it and therefor see no reason to shell out money for it.
Quite a lot of people have already installed Windows 7 even without official support from Apple.
The hatter has an ongoing thread full of helpful tips about Windows 7 http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1866970&tstart=15
With the 8GB RAM you plan to get I would suggest the 64-bit version of Windows 7, since with 32-bit Windows you won't be able to use all the RAM.
    Regards
    Stefan
