Need to MAX OUT my Ram

Currently running Dual 450 Mhz Power PC G4
with 384 MB SDRM
What is my max RAM?
Where do I get it cheap?
How do I install it?
Thanks
Rokr

Apple will only specify what they have tested themselves, and in some models of about that time the memory technology advanced just after a model had been discontinued. For glaring example, all models of the Beige G3 accommodate 3 * 256 MB DIMMs of the right type, but Apple only certified the last model as accepting up to 128 MB DIMMs (earlier models had been completely discontinued by the time the denser RAMs became available, so Apple never tested them and never revised its documentation).
It is important to buy from a vendor that actually tests RAM in Macs, not just maintains a database of what sales "stick" and what sales are returned.

  • Maxing out on RAM

    Hey
My old powerbook came with 128, I added 512 to start then exchanged that with a 1gig so it was running on 1.128. No problem at all. Spec said max was 640.
I now have the macbook pro 2.16 C2D 15.4 screen. It came with a removable gig ram and I had a gig from my previous MBP. However - I feel 2gig is not enough. This MBP says it can only do 3gig ram. Recent models can do 4. I'm wondering if anyone has maxed out the ram on a 3gig version and run it on 4.
I'm thinking of pullng out both 1gigs and sticking 2x2gig in it. Just want to make sure it is possible.
    Appreciate any help.

    Hi,
one benefit of 2x2GB is that you still have the 'pairing' advantage of some small percentage more speed when the memory is accessed.
And secondly, if you decide to get a Santa Rosa MBP in the future you can use this memory for it.
Other than that, you are right, not much use.
    Have Fun

  • How do I get my iTunes (both purchased and cd's) into the cloud as I cannot use match my iMac and MacBook are too old to use the right OS and maxed out RAM memory upgrades, but have iPhone 4S and now 64gb iPad and libraries on desktops plus iPod!!

So very excited bought iPad and new speakers today! Want to get all my music sorted as across iMac (G5), MacBook os 10.6 (maxed out ram and memory) and old iPod. Saw Match would be an option but can't use due to old OS so I can get the raw music library files but then what do I do to get all in one place? Any help appreciated.

A good route would be to attach a USB drive to the macbook.  You can use the drive to assemble a copy of all of your music from your various devices.  iTunes on the macbook can be used to create a new library, located on the USB drive, into which you can import all of your music.
    Two major benefits:
    1.  From here you can run iTunes Match across your entire music collection; and
    2.  You will have created a full local backup of all of your music on the USB drive.
Once complete you will be able to access the music from any iDevice capable of running iTunes Match,  Do remember as you add music it is important to maintain a local backup in order to keep your music safe.

  • Why does my memory max out at 70% (using iStat) @ 2x1GB RAM 667mhz

    Hi,
I'm using iStat as a monitoring service and I have 2x1gb RAM installed and a 2.4 core2duo processor. I run multiple programs at once (Firefox, Dropbox, MS Office, iTunes) and my memory hovers around 71% all the time (it gets sluggish around 70%). It never has gone up or past 74%. I figure it should max out around 100% right? I recently upgraded to 2x2gb or 667 memory. Will I still have the same problem of hitting a threshold? How do I get rid of this ceiling? Thanks!

    Hi bmose14,
I'm not entirely sure how iStat Pro monitors RAM (I always use Activity Monitor for that) but I know Snow Leopard changed how RAM is monitored. Previously in Leopard if you had, for example, 2GB of total RAM it would show that as available and then just immediately allocate the RAM that's being addressed by the GPU. But in Snow Leopard, I find that I have 1.75GB of total RAM (as it doesn't calculate the 256MB of VRAM my shared GPU is allocated).
I'm thinking you have the Intel GMA X3100 GPU (144MB of RAM) and as such that's being calculated here, in addition to the RAM being used by the programs and OS. With that being said, I don't think you can ever reach the 100% mark. I know I fired up iStat Pro on my machine (prior to responding) and I'm also hovering around ~80% despite Activity Monitor showing about the same as "green" in the pie chart.

  • Which 3rd party ram can I buy to max out my imac 2.93ghz i7 without the imac shutting down?

Which 3rd party ram can I buy to max out my imac 2.93ghz i7 without the imac shutting down? I know and apple knows that there is an issue with this but, I'm wondering if there is anyone here that has solved this issue. Apple wants waaaaay too much for 16 gigs of memory.

There was an issue with mid/late 2010 iMacs mostly, as evidenced in one of the threads:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2588800
However, I'm not aware of any current or remaining problems. I have a mid 2010 iMac and solved the problem by sticking with a total of 12 GB RAM (4 GB OEM original and 2 x 4 GB added from OWC). So, if you're not sure, contact OWC - they were actively working on the problem last year and if you buy 16 GB from them and they don't work, you can easily return it. Or, be super safe, and stick with a total of 12 GB - I'm finding that 12 is really quite enough even though I do a fair amount of photo, graphics, and video editing.

  • My laptop has 1g ram i need to know how much ram this computer will handle, i have a dv6426us

I'm needing to upgrade my RAM I have a total of 1G now, I need to know what this particular laptop will handle. The OS is Vista Home Premium and it takes as much as 2 hrs to reboot sometimes
I have a Pavillion DV6426US Entertainment Wide Screen
Thanks for any help that you can provide

    Hi:
You can install 2 x 2 GB of PC2-5300 memory (total of 4 GB), if you have BIOS version F.25 or newer installed in your notebook.
Maxing out the memory should help the performance, but you should look into removing any unnecessary software and stop any unnecessary programs from running at startup.

  • Maxed out Mac Pro (nearly new) DEAD SLOW - why???

*I have always been a PC guy (animation and film production is what I do -- www.speedbumpstudios.com) but I decided to bite the bullet and go Mac. I maxed out my Mac Pro-- if it's available, I got it. It's a 15,000 machine. Great. So I've had it for a few months and the thing is so dead slow I am finding it almost unusable. My three year old PC laptop kicks its butt. Here are the symptoms.*
*Opening Photoshop takes anywhere from 1 to 3 minutes. Once it is open, if I try to open a file, it takes another couple of minutes for the finder to pop up so I can search for it.*
*iTunes regularly hangs and/or takes several minutes to load. My iPod, which is also new, sometimes cannot even connect to it (error).*
*HP scanning software takes minutes to open. Once the scan is ready to be saved, it takes minutes for finder to even offer the option to name the new file.*
*Almost all the software on this thing starts up painfully slow.*
*IMPORTANT: I have noticed that the machine runs almost all right immediately after a restart. The longer it runs, the worse these symptoms get.*
*ALSO IMPORTANT: -- I had been running Boot Camp on the machine, allowing me to boot into Windows XP. Recently bought Parallels and ran that. While this Mac never ran great, the problems seemed to get markedly worse at that point. I have since, out of desperation, removed Parellels completely, but the problems persist.*
*I am, of course, sick about how much I am paying for this machine that is supposed to be the best available and it about as useful as a boat anchor. WHAT SHOULD I DO!?*

    George, I feel your pain. I too have a maxed out Mac Pro;
    Mac Pro - 8 Core (Dual Quad-Core 3GHz)
    16GB RAM (Crucial Memory)
    4x 750GB Drives
    ATI 1900x Vid Card
    2x 30" Cinema Displays
etc etc etc .... I even have a 2-port eSATA cables installed (OWC) with a 1.5TB external drive (Iomega, and fast as the dickens!)
My machine has been in the Apple repair facilities THREE times so far (I am working with an executive relations person for 3 months now) and we are about to swap it out for a new machine because the term "ghosts in the machine" apply to many Mac Pros. In fact, the last time Apple fixed this machine was yesterday, replacing a bluetooth module, and as soon as I booted the machine it started having kernel panics (for the first time), we thought it was the RAM Riser cards being seated wrong... after making sure everything was seated properly, and doing a complete OS reinstall, it is still kernel panic-ing every hour (if I let the machine sit quietly)...so, there is a ghost in this machine that does not want to go away.
To get your situation though, MY machine has ALWAYS been much slower than the dual-G5 I replaced last April. You are not alone here. This is an 8-Core machine, ran Tiger slow and is now running Leopard only about 20% faster, which is still slower than the G5. Makes me want to cry sometimes because I paid, what, $1300 for the processor upgrade alone?
Something is wrong with your machine. I suppose you have already tried to reinstall, reformat your drives, correct permissions, etc and still found your machine wanting in the ways of speed, right? What you need to do is to contact Apple Executive Relations and tell them what is going on. Once they see that you ordered such an expensive machine (no one buys extra RAM from Apple so they will sympathize right there!) they WILL contact you and work with you until your problem is solved. The only reason they have not replaced MY machine yet (they will usually do so after the 2nd or 3rd repair attempt) is because in my case I cannot afford the downtime. Now, however, I think we have to because no one can figure out why this machine is having panics after sitting still for an hour.
Anyway, be assured this is NOT representative of Apple or the Mac Pro speed. Mac Pro's are plenty fast, and unbelievably fast with newer, Intel-based software (CS3), and even though Leopard has many many bugs it is faster than Tiger. My partner has the same machine as I do and it is so fast I think it does most of his work before he even arrives in the morning.
Work with Apple, let them fix your machine or replace it. They will.

  • HELP! File cache Maxed out at startup

Hello everyone, I have used this forum to answer my everyday questions but I have not found the answer to this question. As of late my Mac's file cache gets maxed out instantly. I have 32GB of RAM and near 28GB gets used up in the file cache. I try using memory cleaner and the file cache will not delete. I have to use the terminal command "sudo purge" to delta the file cache. Just yesterday, I started up my mac and 27GB was already in use in the file cache.
I recently installed Lightroom 5.7.1 and Camera Raw 8.7. And the problems have started since I installed one of these apps.

Un-install Memory Cleaner and let the OS handle memory. It does a better job. Un-install using the developers instructions.
    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

  • Coding Solvency Simulator, Maxing out with jdk1.3?

Am using java to develop a Social Security Solvency Simulator for public use on my Common Sense on Social Security website. It appears to me that the tools I'm using are now maxed out by the code I've written. Simple System.out instructions don't execute. I am using JCreator as my development tool, and jdk1.3 as my java platform. I have a 333 MHz CPU and 160 MB of RAM, running Windows 98. My 18 .class files add up to 210 KB, which doesn't seem like a lot, but I do create about 160 somewhat complex Cohort objects in order to track the possible effects of Personal Retirement Accounts. Should I switch from JCreator? Upgrade to a more powerful Java platform? Add RAM? Any suggestions?

i looked at the page in both netscrape and ieeee and had no problems. my system is a pIII 733 with 512mb ram but....
i think your problem(s) have other causes than this.
    1) your not printing out system messages... ummmmmm.. yes you are
here are some sample messages from ie

in both cases you have to access the java console in the application to see these. you may already know this but since i can see stuff and you say you can't i wonder if this isn't the problem.
    2) you are complaining sort of about performance. i would definitely throw all your class files into one big jar. right now you are causing the browser to download all the files it needs on an individual basis... this is very slow.. put it all in one archive file and this will go faster
here is the big explanation of why...
all files 40 (wild guess here)
    in 40 files (200k) vs 1 jar file(210k)
download time over 56k modem connection speed of about 5.3k
    200k + (40 files X 2k HTTP overhead each file) = 280k
    total download time 52.8 seconds
    or...
    210k + (1 file X 2k HTTP overhead each file) = 212k
    total download time 40 seconds
as you can see this is quite a difference especially as my assumptions are biased against the jar file. namely the http overhead is low and we assumed NO compression for the jar file.
for more information on jar'ing stuff try here http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/Books/JAR/
well i hope this is all helpful

  • Maxed out MBA vs Standard MBP

I am currently a Senior in High School and we are provided 11" MacBook Air (2012) w/2GHz Intel Core i7, 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD 4000 Graphics, and 121 GB Flash Storage. I'm most likely going to be attending Belmont University as a Music Business Major. My main concerns are speed and overall performance in a laptop while dealing with high-powered professional software. My current choices would be between a maxed out MacBook Air (2014) vs a Standard MacBook Pro (2014). Also, being a Music Major, should I invest in a decent sound card? Internal or External? If someone could help me, that would be awesome! Thank you!

To be honest I would look at a refurb mbp with a mechanical hard disk, especially for your needs. I suggest staying far away from the newer generations coming out of apple. I do physical data recovery, as in a cleanroom and deepspar operation, and I also repair computers. The SSDs in these new apple laptops fail at a tremendous rate and I can't pull data from them. I had one last week and one this week that had catastrophic failures somewhere on the SSD. The price for a replacement SSD starts at around $450 and goes up to about $600. That's half the cost of a newer mbp.
An earlier version of the mbp will suit your needs just fine and you won't risk losing data to a proprietary and outlandishly expensive SSD down the road. The built in sound on apple products is pretty good but an external USB DAC is going to be much better. I personally use a rather inexpensive soundblaster DAC I got from Amazon.
EDIT: The reason I suggest a mechanical hard disk based storage option is the ease of upgrades to the entire PC. The hard disk can be easily replaced with a standard SSD and the RAM can be upgraded. You CANNOT upgrade RAM on anything made by apple these days - a huge turn off for someone who wants to keep a machine for longer than a few years. The SSDs are upgradable if you'd like to pay out the nose.

  • Maxed out CPU Usage, happens suddenly, no obvious cause, please help!

I've had an XServe-G5 running well for about 18 months, with anywhere from 2-5 active users at one time. The server is only running AFP, Software Update & FTP services.
For the last 2 months, without warning, the CPU usage will max out, with only a small amount of disk & lan access with it.
I've found a less than ideal solution . . . . the cpu max out seems to be linked to 1 or 2 users logged in at one time, but not always the same users, if these users disconnect then the CPU usage returns to normal. I haven't found a way to identify which user/users it is, so I disconnect them through 'Server Admin' one by one till I get a result.
This goes on up to 5 times a day. I've checked the AFP access log when the problem happens, but can't see anything there that isn't there normally, the error log has no events. When there are no users logged in, other than the local 'Admin', the problem does not occur.
We've resorted to only logging into the server when needed, but it's getting to be a major pain.
    Please help!

Many things can cause this. What do you see in "top"?
One example is when you hit the "corrupt .DS_Store" bug in AFP. See afp548.com for a discussion, e.g.:

    Hi Chefjeegar
Yes that screwdriver kit has the #00 phillips screwdriver that you need to access the RAM and hard drive. You'll also need the Torx driver to change the hard drive. http://www.amazon.co.uk/LINDY-Computer-Technician-Precision-Torx/dp/B0000934GO/r ef=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1348072554&sr=1-1
For a good explanation about RAM look at the page on OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/
In the UK Amazon or eBay might be your best bet for cheap RAM but read the description and reviews carefully. For a little more expensive but with a better warranty is Crucial UK http://www.crucial.com/uk/
A good resource for working on your MacBook is ifixit.com http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Core_2_Duo
Is your external hard drive formatted for Mac? To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Put the new drive in your MacBook, then format and partition the new drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer your OS back to the new drive.
Yes, you can put an SSD in the MacBook.

It would be necessary that you have to use "Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool". (see Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6 )
The order varies depending on your individual needs:
    1. Maybe you have to activate/deactivate, so please have a look there:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-deactivation-products.html
    2. Sometimes, we know in the meantime, the "opm.db file" is the culprit. In this case you should delete it.
    3. Did you already try "uninstalling and re-installing"? Be careful with (de)installing aso. by (de)installing by your own resources. As much as I regret it and as strange as it may seem I fear it's a challenge for Adobe's Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. Sometimes - for whatever reasons - CC doesn't "want" to work. In this case you should CC completely delete and reinstall by help of Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. (A try to uninstall by own resources is not enough!)
I quote: Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool helps resolve installation problems for Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Creative Suite (CS3-CS6) applications. The tool removes installation records for prerelease installations of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications. It does not affect existing installations of previous versions of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications.
Please use: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html   and follow the prescribed sequence of operations
    4. If necessary and for further questions click through http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html or http://helpx.adobe.com/de/contact.html and if "open" please use chat, I had the best experiences.  The chat button is activated as soon as there is an agent available to help.

  • My hard drive is about maxed out, what are my options

I have a MacBook that is about 5 years old.  My hard drive is about maxed out.  Trying to determine if it is worth trying to get a larger hard drive, whether I just go to a portable hard drive (a bit of a pain since I travel so much) or something else.  Don't think I can even upgrade to Mountain Lion because of lack of hard drive space.  I love my Mac, but am looking at possibly going to an iPad for travel as the Mac is heavy and I have to carry two computers (work and personal).  Considered buying a new Mac, say an Air, but don't have that kind of cash to drop for it.
Would appreciate any opinions out there?  If I upgrade the hard drive, what kind of money are we talking about?
