Need to move audio clip to primary storyline without disturbing sync

I had a video clip in the primary storyline from which I detached the audio. I then lifted the clip by selecting it and clicking option-cmd-up arrow. What is the simplest way, preferably with keyboard shortcuts rather than dragging, of putting the audio clip in the primary storyline in sync with the video?
Here's a screen shot of my timeline after detaching the audio and lifting the video:

AFAICT you need to have some video clip to make that work. The following workaround is a bit messy, but can do the trick.
1) Add some short video clip connected below the audio (it can be a placeholder or a gap, or something else)
2) Select the audio and the dummy video and make that a compound clip (option-G)
3) Select the compound and command-option-downArrow to overwrite to the primary.
3) break apart the compound clip (select it and do Clip->Break Apart Clip Items, or Cmd-Shift-G)
4) delete the dummy video

Move, trim, or delete clips in the primary storyline without affecting connected clips
That’s just what I was waiting for!
But it's very difficult for me to use this option
First af all the choice of the "Grave accent", which isn't present itself on the Mac keyboard, is somewhat strange in my opinion.
So, according to my keyboard viewer, to get grave accent I have to use alt-\ or alt-9, which is itslef too complicated.... Couldn't they program a simple modifier key (alt, or command, or ctrl...)?
Anyway, in both cases I get strange behaviours.
Infact I get alert sound, which meanes something strange is happening, and the behaviours are not what I want...
    Any help?
    Thanks

You can set that key to something else that suits you better.
(just as you can customize keyboard shortcuts all over the application, changing and adding shortcuts as you wish).
The name for this command is "Override connections".
Go to  Final Cut Pro->Commands. This will open the "Command Editor".
In order to not mess with the default set of commands, first make a copy by selecting "Duplicate..." in the popup menu at the top left of Command Editor. Call this something meaningful (or leave it as "Copy of default").
Enter "Override connections" (without the quotes) into the search box at the top right. Now you can enter an appropriate keyboard shortcut for it.
(Note: if you choose something that is already assigned to a different function, you'll get a warning dialog box)

  • Can no longer select or move audio clips on Narration track - what happened??

I began my first Adobe Premiere Elements 11 project this morning, a short video (5 mins) I intend to upload to YouTube.  It's a comedy sketch involving inanimate objects that "talk", so it requires a lot of dialogue to be added to, in this case, the Narration track.
I am not new to Premiere Elements.  In fact, I've done quite a bit of fairly complex editing on previous versions of the software (I upgraded to 11.0 from 8.0).  I've never had this problem before.
After editing this project for well over 2 hours with no problem, I can suddently no longer move or even select any audio clip on my Narration track.  They are just frozen and stuck there.  Everything else works normally.  I can select and move all other clips on all other tracks.  Further, all audio clips will play, even the ones on the Narration track.  However, I can no longer move, select, or even add any clip to the Narration track.
I opened a new project to see if the problem persisted, but it didn't - I could add, select, move audio clips on the Narration track just fine.
I'm stuck and bewildered.  The project I've already invested 2-3 hours into seems permanently broken.  The audio clips on my Narration track will play, but I can't select, move, or otherwise do anything to them.
My fear is not just that I'll have to start this project over again, but I'll never know when it will break again, and I'll lose all my work again.
    Help!
Seriously, does anyone know what's happened?

Thanks for the details. As I suggested this idea that I had after reading this thread may be just nonesense, but I thought it would be interesting to try.
This is recommended done with a copy of the project that you have now.
For now, let us assume that the missing track names are part of the locked Narration Track syndrome. I am not sure if your narration clip was generated in Premiere Elements narration feature or created elsewhere and brought into the program. That would be interesting information to have. But, nonetheless, moving forward with this idea.
Given you cannot move, delete, change, etc what is on this Narration Track. Whatever is on that Narration Track traces back to an original on the hard drive and probably is shown in Media Cache's (Adobe Folder) as  conformed audio cfa and pek set.
    a. Find the narration hard drive hard location and move it to a new location (special folder on hard drive). When you go back to the copy of the problem project, you should be greeted with one of those "Where is....?" messages. Cancel out of that. Do not do anything within that message dialog.
    b. Right click the thumbnail for your narration in Project Media and select Replace Footage. Then browse to and select the original that you had moved to the computer desktop and the special folder there.. Click OK. That should restore the file (including whatever effects were made to the file) to the project.
    c. Has any of that had any effect on unlocking the Narration Track?
    Other maneuvers to try
    a. Trying to locate and delete any cfa or pek files associated with the problem audio.
    b. Switching to an Aero Theme for Windows if you do not have one set so far.
Thanks for giving all of that a look at.

  • Can't Move Audio Clip

I need to shift and audio clip and I can't move it. There is a gray line a the top of the clip that does not appear on other clips, but I don't know what this means. I can shorten or lengthen the clip, but I can't move it. At the far right top is a button that indicates that I can speed up or slow down the clip and this button doesn't appear on the other clips. Occasionally a box pops up to let me say if this is a custom or a present and it currently is custom at 100 percent. The clip is highlighted in yellow, which would seem to indicate I can move it, but I can't. I'd appreciate help on how to fix this.
    Thanks.

hmmm... It seems to be a new big problem, I'm having the same issue...
    But with iMovie HD 6
I'm using Mavericks and I import a movie file into iMovie HD, then an audio file (I've tried mp3 and aiff) and both play, video and audio. Then I have to edit the audio file to sync with the video, and then is when iMovie HD freezes.
I've deleted the preferences (now iMovie opens only the menu, but the project doesn't appear at all, only that colourful loading icon forever ) I've repaired the permissions   restarted every single time and still nothing...
IS THERE ANYONE TO help us out, please?

  • Can't Move Audio Clips in Timeline After Expanding to View Waveforms (Premiere Pro CC 2014.2)

So, this seems to be a bit of a weird one, and I'd be pretty stoked if it ended up being something silly that I'm doing wrong, but I can't for the life of me figure out what that might be.
As the title suggests, I can't use the mouse to move some audio clips in a timeline once I expand the track to view the waveforms. This appears to only happen with independent audio clips (WAV. AIFF, MP3, etc), and not with clips attached to video. Also, it's worth noting that I don't have track keyframes turned on. I was hoping that was it, but it wasn't.
    So, what happens is this:
    1) I drag an audio clip down to the timeline (I can drag it onto an existing track, or drag to the bottom of the sequence and create a new track. Neither option seems to get a different result.).
    2) So long as the track isn't expanded and the waveform isn't visible, I can move the clip left, right, or up and down to a different track.
    3) As soon as I expand the track to view the waveform this functionality goes out the window. When this issue happens I can use the keyboard to nudge left and right, but that's about all the movement I have.
    4) It's almost as though the track becomes corrupt. The lanes for the track don't redraw properly, and the track is pretty much unusable. I can't put anything into it, and I can't take anything out. All I can do is delete the track and start again.
Complicating issues is that this doesn't always happen, but instead is one of those "vast majority of the time" issues. I can't see any rhyme or reason for why it works or doesn't. I seem to do the exact same thing, but occasionally get different results. It doesn't matter what type of file I'm using (WAV, AIFF, etc), and this only happens with independent audio clips.
Once again, I don't have track keyframing turned on when this happens. Believe me, I wish that was it.
I have already filed a couple of bug reports about this over the last month or so, but haven't heard anything yet. I was wondering if anyone else was having the same issue, and if so, whether they had any workarounds.
    Mandatory system info:
    Windows 7 Professional SP1 (64-Bit)
    Intel i7-3820
    32GB RAM
    Nvidia GTX 980 (350.12)
    Premiere Pro CC 2014.2

    Update:
I was just looking to post a screenshot of the timeline when I discovered something interesting. As soon as I use the vertical scroll bar to the right of the sequence, the tracks start to work again. Close off the waveform and the clip goes haywire. Move the scroll bar a tiny bit (or a lot), and suddenly the clip starts working.
    Pretty bizarre.
The good news is that for the time being that could be a workaround, though it would be great for this to not happen at all.

  • Cant move audio clips around in the timeline? Help?

When my clips are in the timeline in iMovie 11, after a few times of moving them around, it suddenly stops allowing me to move the clips around anymore. Any Ideas?

Well basically, I will import a .mp4 video file into the timeline and then I will import an audio file in from itunes. After a couple of trys to sync the imported audio file and the video up correctly, it just decides to not let me move the imported audio clip around anymore in the timeline. Any ideas? and thanks for the responce.

  • Replace clip on primary storyline with connected clip?

    Hi!
Is it possible to replace a clip on the primary storyline with a connected clip?
A possible scenario where this would be useful is if you want your recorded voiceover on the primary storyline. If you have a blank clip where the voiceover goes and put the b-roll on a secondary storyline connected to the blank clip, it would be easy to just drag the recorded voiceover on to the blank clip to replace it.
Any idea if this works? I think I have tried dragging with all the modifiers...
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply.
One scenario I often have is that I work in parallel with the reporter writing the voiceover. I usually put down the b-roll while he writes it to save time. Thats why I would leave a gap for the VO.
I could always leave the b-roll on the primary storyline and have the VO connected, but to me it makes sense to use the primary storyline for voiceover and sync to take advantage of the magnetic timeline.
Overwrite to Primary Storyline doesn't really work for this since it overwrites instead of replace, so if the VO is longer than the empty clip you end up overwriting your next clip too.

  • Audio scrubbing just moves audio clip

Hello; I'm a new iMovie user and I'm just finding my way around in the program. I have an old G4 with iMovie 4.01 and I can't seem to get the audio scrubbing to work. According to the Pogue book on iLife 04, "In iMovie 04, for the first time, you can scrub by Option-dragging your mouse back and forth across an audio clip. iMovie plays the sound under your cursor." [p. 361]
So far everything I've tried has just ended up moving the audio clip from side to side, Option key or not. What am I not doing right here?
    Thanks.

Bit unstable ..but Apple warns that it still is; "use at own risk", etc.
I wanted to see if current (version 6.0.3) iMovie HD, etc, works OK with the new system. So far, no problems.
Safari looks a little different - different typeface, and these buttons at the bottom of each post ("Did this topic solve your issue? Yes No") appear odd ..but maybe that's because it's still in the process of being tweaked and refined. There's a handy "make an Widget" button in Safari, letting me draw around, say, the topmost 10 posts on this page, and then I can call that back as a Widget overlay on top of anything else which is on the screen ..making it easy to pop in and out of Discussions..
Just downloaded a newer version yesterday, but have yet to install it (today).

I am not getting any sound out of the .mov file here (old woman telling story):

  • Need to put HD clips in SD sequence without aliasing, any way to do this without converting clips to ProRes?

Editing a 1080p project shot with Canon 5DMkii.
Have a 1080p H.264 sequence that I planned to change to ProRes when all finished, before exporting to make a DVD.
Many shots have problems, and the only way to get around them is to reframe.
I figured, no problem, DVD video is SD, so I have 600+ pixels of frame-height to play with.
Now I have a rough cut and I have put some clips into a sequence preset to 720x405.
Unfortunately, when the original clips are anything other than 100% of their 1920x1080 size, it’s aliased as heck.
EXCEPT when you convert the original clip to ProRes.
I didn’t convert to ProRes before editing because it quintuples the size (the project has 45GB of footage and my internal 1TB HD has limited space), plus on this project the small difference in final-product quality that converting before editing brings wouldn’t matter.
I really do need to reframe many of the shots, and I wouldn’t terribly terribly mind converting to ProRes now, except that when you do, Compressor adds “ProRes…” to the new clip name, so you couldn’t just reconnect the already-edited sequence with the newly converted clips (or could you)?
    So,
Can the downsizing of HD clips in an SD sequence be done without aliasing?
If not, can a whole sequence (15 minutes) be reconnected to clips to clips that
have the “Apple prores 444 hq” added to their name? (I tried and the converted clip is grayed out, can’t select it)
       3.  If not, can the whole 45GB of footage be converted to ProRes, but keep original names unchanged?
If none of the above is possible, any other solution?
    Thank you very much

That is a non-standard sequence setting. SD in NTSC land isn't 16:9.  It is 4:3 anamorphic.  720x486...anamorphic (squeezed).
Editing H.264 straight from the camera is wrought with errors. Besides the sluggishness of it, the non-RT playback...exporting has all sorts of issues.  Not exporting proper sections of footage, not exporting the full sequence (the tail might get cut off), loss of sync upon export...much more.  All of those issues have been mentioned on various FCP forums.  H.264 is not a codec FCP 7 deals with well at all.
Converting to ProRes before editing is your only way to ensure vary little issues.  And converting to ProRes 422 is recommended.  Not HQ...not 4444.  Your footage will not see any benefit from those formats, even though they sound more impressive. All you will get is larger files.  Heck, since you are going to DVD, ProRes LT would be the optimal choice.  Even if you went to BluRay, ProRes LT would be fine for that format.  H.264 is an 8-bit format...ProRes LT or 422 will get it to 10-bit, and allow for better grading.  But ZERO benefit will be had with HQ or 4444...those are for other uses...with higher end formats.
Not enough space? Get another drive.  Internal SATA, if you have a MacPro...are 2TB for under $150.  You can get an external 2TB for $200-$300.
    3. Yes...use MPEG STREAMCLIP to convert the footage to ProRes.  422 or LT are recommended.  Then you can reconnect, but you will need to make a new sequence that is ProRes...not H.264.

  • How an earth do I add long audio clips to an object without it cause problems?

There must be a way of accomplishing want I want in Captivate. This seems so basic and straightforward, there MUST be a way. My situation is this....I have a design where there is a picture and buttons for different items in the picture. On click, users should see a text caption and listen to the text caption's audio.  Many times they also see an animation with the audio and text.
    1) We desinged Captivate to have buttons that on click would display the text and animation. That works, but with the audio it is a different kind of story. With the audio added to the text caption, the audio cuts off. Somehow or somewhere, Captivate is set to only play x seconds of audio if the audio is attached to a text caption.  This is the only explanation I can figure out. So basically, adding several seconds of audio to text captions is not a good idea.
    2) As second alternative, we are using rollover slidelets, which do part of the trick (on rollover show text and play the audio). However, there is no way to "on rollover" display animation. The only way to to this is to set the slidelet to "on click" display animation.  That does not work since we can't have half the actions happen on rollover and the other half on clicks. Confusing!
    3) Since slidelet seems the best alternative for achieving what I want (displaying audio, textbox + animation), I tried the following...in rollover slidelet hotspot i set it to "on rollover" "no actions". i also set the slidelet to be invisible. i set the rollover hot area to "on click" display textbox and slidelet. That of course did not work. Even though the slidelet hotspot is set to do nothing, it stills plays the audio (attached to the slidelet) on rollover.
So, I am back to the drawing board. If this does not work, we will have to scrap all interactivities done in Captivate and do them in Flash instead. Ideas?
This is a very simple and basic interactivity feature how come it is not easily accomplished in Captivate?

I think the default way transitions work is to ignore handles and instead use the visible media. I'm betting this is the way imovie does it, but I don't know.
Try changing this behavior in the preferences by going to:
Final Cut Pro --> Preferences --> Editing
And then change the "Apply Transitions Using" setting from "Full Overlap" to "Available Media." I'm hoping this changes the default behavior back to how FCP 7 works.

  • Adobe Prem 5.5 PC - Editing a multi camera & audio Concert into separate songs without losing sync

I have just finished completing a full synchronisation of multiple cameras and audio sources that took some imense amount of time to finish - phew!
Now I need to edt this into 11 separate songs, each with its own opening and closing titles.
I cannot easily cut in or using ripple delete or another cutting tool to change this without the calamity of losing sync.
I almost need to save this whole project as a scene and then re import it as another sequesnce and just cut it to suit each song but still not sure what method for saving it as I do not want to drop a generation.
Or should I copy and paste into a new sequence but then sync is a problem as soon as I cut it !!
Anyone who might have had experience of such a heavy workload of a project that could offer some advice, would be most welcome please.
In an older editing system, I was just able to save as a scene - just not sure with Premiere.
I have 5 or 6 video tracks and a similiar number of audio tracks so far, so worried about the sync issue now.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Alan

I'm sure you're way ahead of me, but my simple question is stacking and synching your various cameras and using multi-edit wasn't what you wanted?

  • Connecting audio clips with Q-key not working

I cannot properly connect an audio clip to a storyline clip using the Q-key.  It positions the clip at the play head, and it shows a connection to the storyline clip, but when I move the storyline clip the audio clip does not move with it.  If I drag the audio clip to the storyline, it works properly.  And if I connect a video clip using the Q-key everything works properly.  Is there a Gotcha with audio clips and the Q-key that I'm missing?  Or perhaps a known bug?  I couldn't find anything about it.

Where is the playhead positioned when you hit the Q key? It looks like somehow the playhead is parked at the last frame of the outgoing clip - and if so, then the program is working as it should.
What happens if you move the playhead one frame to the right using the right arrow key and then hit Q?
    Does it work then?
Also: do you have skimming turned on? And where is the skimmer? The position of the skimmer takes precedence over the playhead if skimming is on.
One other thing you might try: press the closing bracket key "]" to select the left edge of the incoming clip.
If all these fail, then you may need to trash preferences (there are four, not just two, files to trash; it may be easier to use Preference Manager to handle this).

  • When clicking an audio clip on the timeline in Premiere Pro CC 2014, it duplicates it on a different track and makes it impossible to work.

I'm experiencing a disturbing issue as it actually prevents me to do the work in Premiere. I will put as much info as possible:
    1) Project started on a different computer (the editor), PC with Premiere Pro CC,
    2) Now opened on my Imac with Premiere Pro CC 2014,
    3) I am not editing, simply trying to move audio clips on different tracks to export audio tracks only,
    THE ISSUE:
    1) Here is my timeline:
    2) When I select an audio clip to highlight it, Premiere creates a duplicate on a different track:
Note that the clip highlighted in the previous screen cap is the duplicate and I didn't click it, Premiere highlights it as soon as it is duplicated.
    3) When I click out of the timeline or scroll up or down on the timeline, the duplicates disappear. However, when I try to move the original clips, it doesn't do anything, they are stuck in place.
    ANTICIPATED ANSWERS:
    1) You work on 2 different computers with 2 different versions of Premiere Pro CC, what do you expect? --> The amazing thing about Adobe CC is that it shouldn't be an issue and now I have to deal with it in this way,
    2) Try and save an updated version of your project from your computer. --> Already done that.
Thank you for your help. I usually use the customer support chat but I am on the other side of the globe and it is now closed. This issue prevents me to work so I need to solve it quickly.
    Kind regards,
    Aurelien

This sounds to me like it could be a graphics related problem are you on the latest driver. Something else you could try, start a new project and import the one from the PC into that rather than directly opening it in the MAC

  • Audio clips on question slides?

I am new to captivate and so far, I love it.  However, I am working on a drill and practice tutorial in Captivate 5 and need to add audio clips to my questions slides.
I have tried adding a roll over text as was suggested in an earlier thread, however, when I play the project, the audio doesn't play.  My audio clips are about 1-3 seconds long and I need them to be repeatable (not just once as the slide opens).
I haven't had any trouble with the audio on the regular slides, just on the question slides.  This is a quiz and I would like to use the random questions feature so it (the quiz) doesn't become predictable. If you have any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate any help.
    Thanks so much!

Looping the audio on a question slide might not be the best strategy unless you are using this for some gentle background music that you wanted to play while the learner was answering the question.
For instructional voiceover, the rollover caption would be the better choice.  There are two parts to a rollover object.  The rollover area is the hit area that your mouse must roll over.  Audio attached to this part will play once when the slide loads.  So it's a good choice if all you want to do is tell the learner where to find more info. E.g. "Roll your mouse over the Info button if you don't know what to do."
The other part of a rollover object is the caption or image that will appear when the mouse is rolled over the rollover area.  Audio attached to this part will play each and every time the mouse event occurs.  This is the best choice for adding audio if you think the learner may need to hear the instructions more than once but you want to leave them in control of when they hear it.
As soon as they roll the mouse off the rollover area, any audio attached to the caption or image will cease to play.
