Need to rename photos already imported

I imported photos from a shoot, and after getting them into lightroom I realized the year was off in the camera. My import preset uses the year as the first part of the file naming convention. So now I want to rename the files by correcting the year in each one. Is there an easy way to do this? I suspect that unless I go through lightroom somehow, the catalog won't know where they are if I change them.
Thanks,
Jim

Click the link in my previous reply (ooooops, looks like the link broke - here you go - http://members.lightroomqueen.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/1135/185/the-time- on-my-camera-was-incorrecthow-do-i-change-it) and you can correct the exif capture time from within LR - even if you've fixed the name, it's probably worth doing that.  Then your normal naming template should have worked, but well done for finding an alternative solution!
Yes, you can convert already-imported photos to DNG, no problem.  Just select them in Grid view and go to Library menu > Convert Photos to DNG and it'll automatically swap them out (and can delete the NEF's for you, at the same time)

  • Renaming Photo on Import and Folder Destination LR4

Sometime back I moved away from Lightroom for two specific reasons. I'm interested in possibly returning to the LR workflow but I've reviewed the new LR4 and can not decipher if it is possible to do the two specific things that made me leave it behind. Here is what I want LR4 to do.
1). Allow me to rename images on Import with a custom name and ongoing sequential number. In other words the custom name would be the letter D and the ongoing number would look something like 234189. Final Image number would look like D234189.NEF. The key to this numbering system is the ongoing sequential number has to be remembered where it last left off each time a new Import is initiated. I'm not interested in having to reset the sequential number on each Import. The system I describe is an option on both Photo Mechanic and Aperture. I'm hopeful Adobe finally added this in Lightroom 4.
2). I need to have the ability to Import all images into a folder on the day of IMPORT. Not the day the Images were shot. Lots of reasons why I don't want folders on day images where shot. I won't get into all of that. Suffice it to say I need the ability for the images to go into the folder on the DAY OF IMPORT. Older versions of Lightroom did not allow this. It would only allow photos to go in to separated folders on day of image capture.
Thanks for any help that's provided. LR4 has some great new features and I have to say it is by far simpler to use than Aperture. I'm hopeful it can meet the two requirements above and if so I'll be moving back over.

Not sure what you mean by "Ongoing sequential naming breaks down as a completeness control as soon as you delete images from within the sequence" I'm guessing you mean that there will be holes within the system? If so, that's not an issue. With an on ongoing running number, the only thing I want to make sure of is that each and every image has it's own personal ID. I don't care if I throw away a dozen, hundreds or ten thousand images in between. Just so the ones I keep have a unique, easy to read Identifier/name. Who cares if there are holes in the system. That's what software is made for. Yes, I could put all images in one folder but what's the point to doing something manually when you are using computers to eliminate manual work. Doesn't make any sense. Finally, you are mostly right about Adobe not loosing many sales without these options. However, my earlier mention of two other professionally dedicated software packages, that do have this capability, suggests that I'm not the only guy wanting more customization. They may be loosing more sales than you think. I've worked with Lightroom for years, as well as Aperture for years and the same goes for Photo Mechanic. I find that most people who take a stand one way or the other haven't tried all the options in a full fledged work environment. Would be nice if Adobe and Apple combined their products so to speak so we could have the best of both worlds.

  • Iphoto keeps reimporting all photos on disk though i have selected hide photos already imported. this is new behaviour!

I am trying to import a few new photos from a 8gb card but Iphoto keeps reloading all the files that I have already downloaded AGAIN! This is new behaviour! I have the box ticked to Hide photos already unloded but it is grayed out so couldn't unselect if I wanted to. I've looked at the directions and they seem to say NOT to select the files on the card and drag them into Iphoto. It is taking hours to reload files that are already there. Any ideas? Cheers.

If this is new what  has recently changed?

  • Photos Keeps Wanting to Import Photos Already Imported

    I'm running Yosemite 10.10.3 with Photos 1.0 (209.52.0).
Every time I plug my iPhone 6 into my Mac, Photos wants to import certain photos that have already been imported. Seemingly, it's the same photos over and over that Photos wants to import again.
Is there a fix for this behavior?

Thanks for the responses, but never mind. I realized that I was actually importing them originally and then deleting them from iPhotos. I can do the same thing in Photos. No problem, then.

  • How do I rename photos after import?

I tried the filenaming template and direct input into metadata. Lightroom displays a message that the file name cannot be renamed_but no explanation is given. What am I missing?

Perhaps (this is a guess) Lightroom does not have write permission for the folder where these photos are located.

  • Import and rename photos via Automator and ExifTool

    Hiya,
Just finished my work on a Automator workflow in order to import and rename photos from a portable hard disk.
I had the problem that my portable hard disk (with integrated card-reader) was not recognised by Image Capture or Aperture. Therefore I couldn't import my photos straight away into Aperture.
Another problem I had was that Aperture doesn't rename photos while importing. Whereas other Automator actions offer this feature, they all didn't fulfill my requirements - yeah, I can be very fussy
That's why I started initially to write a Perl script based on ExifTool in order to copy and rename photos to my liking. Once this was done and very much in use, I started to put it into an Automator action with a little AppleScript around it.
Eventually, I initiated the entire Automator workflow with the Check For Disk action.
More information and the files needed can be found on my website http://photography.stephanjaeger.eu/2007/03/improve-your-digital-photography-wor kflow.html.
The only drawback of this script is that only one camera is supported. At the moment, I work on a solution to support several cameras.
The Perl script can used by itself, if you feel comfortable in using the Terminal.
I hope you find the information and the Automator action helpful.
    Any feedback appreciated.
    Best regards,

    Brian,
Thanks for giving it a try. Let me know how you get on!
If you have any problems, please don't hesitate to contact me.
By the way, you don't have to use an external hard disk. You could replace easily the first step in that workflow with an other action, such as defining a folder that should be monitored, or selecting manually a folder that contains photos.
I hope that I find some time over the week-end to make some changes to the script. I will set up as well a page on my web site with more details.
    All the best,
    Stephan

Hopefully someone can help me with my question.  When I try to add photos from PhotoStream into my iPhoto Library a message appears asking to view the photo in the library (as if it were already imported).  When I click View it brings me to my iPhoto library but the photo(s) are not there?

When I try to add photos from PhotoStream into my iPhoto Library a message appears asking to view the photo in the library (as if it were already imported).
How exacly are you trying to import from the Photo Stream? Dragging from the stream to the events? Ctrl-clicking or right clicking?
If "Show in Library" does not show the event, then your iPhoto Library may need repairing or rebuilding;  try to run the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools, if you have not already done so. See this post by Old Toad on how to do it:    Rebuild iPhoto Library Version 11:

  • Why is iPhoto 11 not recognizing already imported photos from 4S?

I just plugged my 4S into my iMac i3, which is running OSX 10.8.2 and iPhoto 11' all products are up to date on software updates. I wanted to removed some videos off my 4S to free of some space on the phone.  I normall use icloud for all photo syncing and what not so plugging my 4S into the imac is not a common thing for me.
After opening iPhoto I noticed that the photos that were selected as "New Photos" were most duplicates of older photos that were already in my iPhoto library, some dating back a couple of years ago.  I keep copies of them on my iphone to show people when I'm away from my imac.  What I don't understand is why is iPhoto thinking these are "New Photos" and not "Already Imported" photos?  What is even stranger is that when I look in the "Already Imported" photos, those same photos (the ones that iPhoto wants to now import again) are showing up there too.
So my dilema is, that iPhoto is saying that out of 1,289 photos on my 4S, 354 are "New Photos" to be imported but about 250-300 of those are NOT new, they already exist in my iPhoto library. Why is iPhoto not reconizing already imported photos?
Also, if I am using Photo Stream to sync my photos across everything.. why do I even have any new photos to import??  Shouldn't everything already be there when I open up iPhoto, why would I need to import any photos from my 4S if icloud and Photo Stream work correctly with iPhoto 11' ?  I have checked and made sure numberous times that I have Photo Stream and icloud turned on in all the correct places and devices.
What I'm currently using:  iPhone 4S iOS 6.0.1 and iMac i3 OSX 10.8.2 and iPhoto 11' version 9.4.2

You'll need to create a new, temporary library and import into that with the option to delete from your iPhone. Then delete the library and go back to your current library.

  • Import // rename photos

    does anybody know
how can I replace about 2000 photos in indesign without having to import and rename the photos?
for example if I have 4 photos in a document, named A,B,C,D located in a folder named X
and I want to replace them with 4 different photos, named E,F,G,H located in a folder named Y , is there a possible way to do it automatically instead of manually?

I got that.. is just an endless procedure to re-link each image...as well as rebuilding from scratch (with bridge contact sheet)
I cannot rename the images because they belong to specific libraries and they ought to have the specific names however
your second suggestion "export the file to a .inx file and open the file in a text editor, like notepad or something, and then find the reference to a.tiff and replace it with b.tiff.", might be faster because I already have txt files listing the images. SO the replacement in a notepad of a.tiff to b.tiff its more than easy.
if I do  that what could you please tell me what is the next step in order for my initial .indd file to take the information from .inx file?

You basically have to tell indesign what image you want to link to. If you say that you want to link to a.tiff and then you want to change the image to b.tiff you have to Relink the image. As all indesign sees is a path to the file, i.e., c:\mydocuments\eugene\images\a.tiff
InDesign has no way of reading your mind and inserting the b.tiff instead.
The only other way to do it is to rename b.tiff to be a.tiff
Or if you export the file to a .inx file and open the file in a text editor, like notepad or something, and then find the reference to a.tiff and replace it with b.tiff.
But you don't want to do that.
What I'd do is load up my cursor with all the images I wanted to place and go to each image and just click on it to insert the new image.
    or
I'd select the images in the links panel (Window>Links) and choose Relink, and then when prompted to relink A.tiff I'd choose b.tiff, and when prompted for the next image I'd select the new image I wanted to place.
But InDesign won't be able to read your mind, you have to tell it what image you want to replace the other image.

  • IPhoto 11 (9.3.1) Q: howto delete already imported Photos from iPhone with iPhoto?

    iPhoto 11 (9.3.1)
    Steps:
    a) i startet iPhoto
    b) choose device iphone
    c) marked some phots
    d) clicked on import selected photos
    e) delete photos after import: NO
    f) photos imported to iphoto library
Now i have my photos imported.
when i now go in iPhoto to my iphone device i see now a section with my already imported photos
Q: how i can delete some of this already imported Photos from iPhone with iPhoto?
    PS:
i know there is the "Image Capture" app. but i like to do this with iPhoto, because i see there the already imported photos which i can delete safely from iphone.

You'll need to create a new, temporary library and import into that with the option to delete from your iPhone. Then delete the library and go back to your current library.

  • Trying to create a slideshow from a current album in iPhoto 11, but it tells me "the photos you selected were downloaded from your published albums. U can only view these photos. To use them u must import them"  What do I do? I have already imported them.

If i already imported the pictures from my cameras SD card and placed them into an album why is it not letting me make a slide show with these pictures.

Give this a try:  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.

  • Navigate to already imported photos outside of Lightroom 4 and add them to collection

    hello -
this is probably a stupid question... i just recently used my raw software and not Lightroom, and imported photos onto my hard drive. i now want to add those photos to a collection in Lightroom. i can't figure out (to save my life) how in the world do i navigate to photos IN Lightroom 4, but photos that were already imported with another software. can anyone help? thanks!

Here is the easiest way (in my opinion):
    * select files in Explorer/Finder
    * drag them to Lightroom (library) grid.
    * review import settings - make sure 'Add' is selected at the top of import dialog box.
    * click 'Import'.

  • Importer does not recognize already imported photos

    Hello,
I have a really annoying problem with Aperture 3.0.3. The importer does not recognize already imported photos and wants to import them again and again. This is true for photos from my iPhoneand also for photos from my Nikon. If I enable "Do not import duplicates" then some photos vanish from the importer, when I the iPhone view is open. In the Nikon view not even one photo is recognized as already imported.
Also very strange is that when I have the iPhone (iOS 4.1 installed) attached to the Mac, Aperture opens the importer automatically and shows all photos correctly - but strangely, both iMac CPUs are at 100% until I click either "Cancel" or "Start import" or I disconnect the iPhone.
I tried the following without success:
    - Correct permissions on media library
    - Repair media library
    - Rebuild media library
Imports from my iPhone last very long and seem to hang most of the time. I have to kill Aperture to make it work again all the time.
To me, it looks like there is something really messed up at the base of this program.
I have about 20000 files in my library - face recognition is not turned off - most of the preferences are at their default, I think. Did not play around very much.
Does anybody know what to do? I don't want to lose all my Projects (sorted all pictures into their own projects). But I want to work with Aperture again. When its working, it's a great tool.
    Regards
    Alex

I've had the same problem. For some things, like videos and photos on my iPhone, I've found as many as 5 copies of the images despite keeping the 'do not import duplicates' checked.
I've also found a bug with the import function, where if I'm importing from folders on my hard drive, sometimes it finds no images at all (even if they don't exist in my library). Simply cancelling and going back into import and the miraculously appear (including images that have already been imported despite having 'do not import duplicates' checked.).
I've been going through my library deleting all the duplicates, and managed to free about 10GB of space.
Having moved from Lightroom the 'technical side' of Aperture seems very antiquated. For example, if I remove a duplicate video - then try clicking on that video in Aperture, it literally takes about 10-15 minutes of spinning disc before Aperture becomes responsive. It also often hangs up on the 'updating previews' when I quit.
Such a shame aperture is so bad. I really like the functionality - eg. having my photos automatically sync with my Apple TV, but it seems to be absolutely full of bugs.

  • How to delete already imported photos?

So, I connected my camera to my computer and ran iPhoto to import some of the pictures. Since most of them were videos, I left my computer to do the import overnight. My camera doesn't charge while importing, so it turned off, luckily my selected photos and videos were already imported. In the morning, I couldn't pick the option of deleting my imported photos from my device (the camera was already disconnected from my Mac). Is there any way of deleting these automatically? An option of deleting already imported pictures and videos when I connect my camera?
    Thanks in advance.

use the camera's format command to reformat and erase the memory card
a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos
