Need to reorganize Aperture library: help please

I need to reorganize my Aperture Library.
I currently have all the images on my internal HD not stored in Aperture itself. I want to have the referenced images on an x-HD. I've backed up the images to the x-HD. I'm just not sure how to go about getting the images over to the HD as REFERENCED images.
Should I use IMPORT/MOVE? The problem is that I end up with duplicates if I do. If I tick off 'do not import duplicates' I can't see any images.
I think the majority of my images (RAW) are not referenced to begin with (due to a screw up that got me to this position); they must be unreferenced thumbnails. Which makes me think that I might do best simply deleting the contents of my current projects and reimporting everything using the backed up x-HD images as referenced masters. It would be in essence like starting over, but shouldn't take terribly long. (Only half a year's worth.)
Does that sound right?

I think what Kirby was getting at was that instead of importing using the Import window you can import using File->Import->Folders as Projects.
(BTW you can put images right into the message if you click on the camera icon at the top of the editor)
When you use that menu item you'll get this window:
Which allows you to set up the folder/project structure that you want the files/folders to go into in Aperture.
The settings are covered in more detail in the user manual.

Need to send Aperture library to client in South America

I need to get a whole Aperture library containing images and an Aperture book folders to a client in South America.
Today I have already successful transferred the library from an external hard disk that used Tiger, to my new computer's admin account that that uses Leopoard, then transferred it over successfully to a separate user account in the client's name.
I had originally planned to use GoToMyPC for the first time, to allow client restricted access of my computer for their account only, but GoToMyPC won't only allows global access to all accounts.
- I then tried YouSendIt (file too large as it's 2.61GB and limit is 1GB)
- Tried 'Cute Send It' as it has a 4GB limit (allowed me to select the file but constantly stalled on 'calculating time')
- I then tried ShareFile - (everything looked promising as it had 10GB limit, signed up for the 30 free day trial with my credit card details, then when I went to select the library from my desk top it was 'grayed out').
... anyone else got any suggestions?
Any help much appreciated as it's urgent now as I've been at it all day!

For the remote desktop solution you could try:
1) Adobe's [ConnectNow|http://www.adobe.com/acom/connectnow>. This is a screen-sharing service which might fit your requirements but (1) it requires you to initiate a session so requires some input your side, and (2) I'm not sure what would happen if you switched user away from the account on your Mac you enabled for your client (i.e. would the connection die)?
2) Apple's [BackToMyMac|http://www.apple.com/mobileme/features/mac.html] service is a screen and file sharing function that comes as part of a MobileMe subscription. It would allow your client to access your Mac computer (if s/he also has a Mac) but I suspect again it might not fit your requirements as it's really meant as a solution to share your own computers (and not to share with third parties)...you would need to share your MobileMe details with the client.
Alternatively if you just want to send them the files:
1) Again, as part of Apple's MobileMe, the [iDisk|http://www.apple.com/mobileme/features/idisk.html] service allows you to share storage space with third parties. Crucially, from a security perspective, you do not need to share your whole storage space but can select certain files or zipped folders to be shared (these can also be protected with a password).
2) Another option - and this is very old school I know - might be to just ship them the project/library on DVD (unless they don't have an Apple computer nor an Aperture licence)? I have an FTP server in my studio but for large deliveries of TIF files of over 2GB the process is painfully slow (for the client) and I usually just end up couriering them a DVD!

Itunes needs quick time? Instillation help please!

My computer crashed and I took it to a friend a few days ago to get it cleaned off. He cleaned everything off and gave it back to me running like a brand new comp.
So I was in the middle of downloading all of my things and I was downloading itunes again. When it was all finished and supposedly dandy I went to open it and it said it couldn't open it because it needed the newest version of quicktime and that I needed to reinstall it.
So I did what it said and downloaded the newer version of quicktime with itunes and restarted the computer like it told me to. Upon going to open itunes it gave me the very same message and said I need to reinstall it. So mildly ticked at this point I did what it said (for the third time) and STILL got the same message. ><
Can someone please help me!

You are not alone Spook. I have the same problem. Auto Quicktime Update has hosed iTunes. I have found no solution nor any interest from Apple to provide one, other than uninstall it all and try again, which doesn't work. This is an Apple problem, not a Windows problem. And the direct effect is to prevent me from accessing iTunes and spending money there.

Aperture Library Help

Hi,
When I try to upload photos to any website, using their upload feature, my Aperture librar does not show up. The iPhoto library, which I don't use, is the only available library.
While in Aperture, my library seems fine. However, when I look at the library in Finder.....my most recent project was from Jan 2012.
I think something is not right....anyone run into this before?

You need to make sure that "share previews with iWork and ..." is set in Aperture's preferences. And then you need to ensure there are previews generated for your photos. The latter should be the default, the former not maybe, but there are manuals to get you pointed in the right direction.

Ok you see this code here, it works perfectly for just 1 budgie class but I edited the budgie class and made it an array list with more than one budgie. How would I change the simulator code so it can support more than one budgie?

As the requirements of your application increase you will end up with an messy bit of code that no one including you can read. The long term solution to this is to redesign application cleanly using proper design patterns (Do a google search and read about theses).
A quick solution would be, in keeping with the current trend in your design is to introduce another method that would take multiple simulation objects and iterate through theme. It would be better if you introduce a new class to do this. Here is an example.

Ipod ITunes library help please!!!

Hi, i hope someone can help. I had to return my laptop to work and it contained my ITunes library (i have spent a fortune). I thought that i had stored all the purchased songs on a memory stick but when i put this into my new laptop it won't work. I have all the songs still on the Ipod and was hoping that i could somehow tranfer them from the Ipod to the laptop to create the same ITunes library again. I could kick myself now for not getting it done properly, can anyone give me a glimmer of hope?

You can use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
SharePod is also freeware.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

Panic Kernal: You need to restart your computer, Help please...

Yesterday I installed an update on my MacBook and everything went haywire. I installed the Apple updates
that were recommended for my computer when it did it's weekly update
check. After the install I quit all open applications and did a
restart per the on screen prompt. Finder closed and the computer just
sat for over a half hour and never would finish shutting down. No key
strokes or commands would do anything. As a last ditch effort I held
the power key down until it shut down. I waited a minute then powered
back up. The gray screen with the apple logo comes up then the spinning wheel. Then a
panic kernal saying the computer needs to be restarted. I tried ten
times then I reset the PRAM then I did two hardware checks. First the
short check then the long one. Both tests showed all hardware to be
fine.Then I called Apple. They told me to reset the PRAM, told me to
do a hardware check then told me to boot in safe mode. Then told me to
try an archive reinstall by inserting disc one, power on, then hold
the C key after the startup chime sounds. One of two things happen
when this is done, it either goes to a blank blue screen or the "You
need to restart the computer" message comes up. If I power on with the
disc in and hold the option key the hard drive and the disc shows on
the screen. If I click on the hard drive the "restart message comes up. If I
click on the disc the blank blue screen usually comes up but twice the
"restart" message came up. I have tried all of the start-up key strokes, Once I got into safe mode but I can't get into it anymore, it now gives the you need to restart message. I can get into Verbose and Single user mode but I don't know of anything to try once I'm in either of those modes.I tried to boot system from single user mode by typing in the command sh /etc/rc but a long list of code just comes up and says something about the panic kernal which I believe is telling me that the same problem
I have trying a normal boot is keeping it from booting in single user mode also. I can do a hardware test(I've done this 3 times and everything shows to be OK). The main problem I have now is it won't boot normally and it won't boot from the install disc so I am truly stuck. I am at a loss as to what I should try next
since I can't even reinstall the software. Any help will be greatly
appreciated especially since my free phone help ended 2 days ago and
today was the first time I ever needed it!!

Thanks for replying, I have no peripherals attached, I am booting from the MacBook Tiger DVD one that came with the machine. I get the panic kernal with or without the disc installed. All hardware checks out fine in the three hardware checks I've done. I am almost positive the problem is stemming from the Apple updates performed since this is exactly when my problems began(trying to restart after the Apple updates). I just can't get the machine to boot from the disc no matter what I try so I can reinstall the operating system. I even tried using an external DVD-ROM once to see if it would boot from it but it did the exact same thing as when I try booting from the internal drive. Yes my files are backed up to an external hard drive. I've got no problem doing a Nuke and Repave if I must but since it won't boot from the disc I don't know how I can even do this. I know it is under warranty but since the hard ware checks OK it looks like there would be a way to get it running again without sending it in for repairs. However I am starting to think that's what I'm gonna have to do. I'm just glad I still have an old clamshell iBook to work with so I can access the internet to seek help. Thanks for your input, can you think of anything else I could try?

Iphoto library & aperture library - help

Here is my deal...
I had been using iphoto and then a year ago got aperture and want to use it for editing, printing, books, etc. So, I have been importing photos right from the card into iphoto and then, within Aperture, I have been importing to folders/projects. When I got Aperture, I imported the whole iphoto library into aperture and opted for "keep photos where they are".
Now, I would like to change my workflow and just import to aperture, and avoid this extra step. The only problem is that my DSLR takes movies and iphoto will keep them all organized and display thumbnails for them, but aperture will not. What to do?
Option 1- to keep movies organized, I have to maintain this workflow

When You download your memory card to Aperture, Aperture detects that there is media that it cannot handle, ie, movies.
You then get a window pop up that asks you what do you want to do with this media. I just download it to a folder on my desktop, then import it into imovie and edit it accordingly, and continue to download photographs only into Aperture as usual.

The command I'm executing works fine when it's executed from the command line with the same user, but the java error stream kicks out the following error when I run the code:
"SERVERERROR] Error from Server: Error Loading Library 'libsybase'"
I checked the path in java.library.path, and the path to the libraries are there. I can also run other commands and not get this error, such as the DB2 command.
Any ideas of what the problem could be? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks.

Thanks for your response. I'm not sure what you mean by application server. I was able to put the same command in Perl and it worked fine. Could it be an environment variable or something not being set? I can see all of the paths under java.library.path.

Need a tiny bit of help please!

Hey guys,
I have a full set of renders for a character. At this time I
have a 3 point stand and an 8 point walk motion. Basically 3
separate images for standing and 8 separate images for walking.
I want to use AS3 and have the character standing and doing
the 3 point animation. Then I want to make him walk via user
control with the 8 walk images.
To this point I have searched everywhere for a tutorial on
how to do this but all I end up finding is for artists and how to
draw the animations. But like I said, I have the animation images,
I just need to learn how to implement them into flash.
In the end to learn this, all I want to do is to properly
encorperate the images into flash so that I can do a test movie and
have the character doing his stand animation and then when I press
left or right have him do the walk animation. From there I will go
onto collision and whatever I feel like learning at that time.
Right now, just getting a standing animation and a user controlled
walk would be great.
Could anybody point me towards a good tutorial on how to do
this?

A lot of the avi files made on Windows machines use variable bit rate mp3 audio, which QT will not play. One workaround is to use this freeware Windows video processor to change the format of the avi audio.

Open the avi in VirtualDub, set the video menu to Direct Stream Copy and set the audio to Full Processor Mode. Then choose either uncompressed audio in the compression item in Audio Menu or IMA audio. Now open the avi and then use Save as Avi in the File menu. The video will be passed through with no change to the new avi but the audio will be changed to the new compression setting. The two compression types I mentioned will play in QT Player with no problem. You will need to have the video codec for the avi in Video for Windows form. If you can play the avi in Windows Media Player you have the right codec already.

Connect iPhone to iTunes.
Select restore.
When prompted, select restore as new.
If you've already done the "Erase all settings" option in Settings > General > Reset then it is already set up as new.

Need iPhoto/Elements file system help please

I have over 8000 photos in various albums in iPhoto 9.
Some photos show up in multiple albums. I assume the various album pics are linked to the one actual picture file on the hard drive.
If I export one album at a time to Elements, will It actually save multiple copies of the same file on the hard drive?

iPhoto'09 allows you to import the albums/events selectively. However iPhoto'011 does not allow that from Elements Organizer.
In iPhoto'09. if you have organized your photos without selecting the preference of copying files in iPhoto library during import, which means, your iPhoto library keeps the references of the images. In such case if you import from iPhoto into Elements Organizer, organizer does not create separate copies.
But yeah in case of iPhoto'011, it does.

Backing up iTunes Library, help please

I just got an external hard-drive that I would like to put all of my music on instead of filling up my main HD.
How would I go about copying my current iTunes library and putting it on the external HD?
Also, how do I make it the primary place the iPod will sync from? I plan on loading songs directly to the external HD instead of to my disc HD.
Help is greatly appreciated.

Simple.
1 - Quit iTunes.
2 - Drag the iTunes folder to wherever you want it.
3 - Start iTunes and hold the Shift key.
4 - iTunes will ask if you want to Create a new wlibrary or Choose an existing library.
Select Choose existing library and go to where you dragged the iTunes folder.
Drag the old iTunes folder (My Documents -> My Music -> iTunes) to the trash. Don't empty the trash yet.
Make sure iTunes still works.
Quit and restart iTunes (without holding the shift key) and make sure it works okay. If so, you can empty the trash.

can I now delete that project? will photos stay in the albums for later use.

Take the time to think about how you will use Aperture. Léonie just posted an excellent overview of this here.
We hear all time from user's complaining that something they've encountered should not happen in a "Pro" application (I am _not_ referring to you) -- as it turns out, you've stumbled on one of the things that _is_, imho, a great part of a "Pro" app: it's a kit in a box, not an assembled appliance. You get to build the appliance you want.
Take the time to do this right, now, and Aperture will become a robust Transformer/Leatherman. (Don't take the time and you'll likely end up with some kind of sprawling Tinkertoy.)
