Need to repair disk - what do I do????!!!
I've done a check on the disk utility and it says the following:
"Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Apple Hardrive needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair"
However it doesn't give me the choice to click 'repair disk'. Do I need to reinstall? If so what is the safest way of doing this?
If I don't need to reinstall, what should I do?
Any help much appreciated!
Do this:
Repairing permissions is an important part of regular maintenance, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two.

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

i have a slow macbook, i ran live disk utilities (from hard drive), turned out I needed to repair disk from a installation disk. Did that, I got the volume (Hard drive) repaired from the installation disk disk. To this point, great!
When I reboot from hdd, then run disk utility, I get the same error message i did b4 repair. I went thru two rounds of this.....
Can anyone help? thanksSorry guys, I don't see how to reply to you so I use reply to "me" basically.
So the error I get is "volume header needs minor repair" and then you need to perform repair from the installation disk message.
I did repair not verify from the disk twice. Every time ending in the "the volume had ha been successfully repaired". Then I reboot from the internal disk. Run disk utilities from it, do verify and get the same error message I got before repair. I hope this can shed some light fr you guys. Sorry I didn't include details in the original

Constantly need to repair disk using Recovery HD to get Lion 10.7.2 to boot
I have a Macbook Pro 17" 2.8ghz I7 with 8gb of ram, OS X Lion 10.7.2, model series MacbookPro6,1....
Every time i reboot the computer or turn it on i get past the gray screen with the apple, it begins to load my desktop but stops just before it finishes loading everything. I can see my background image, some of my desktop icons, anywhere from 1/4 - 1/2 of my icons at the top, then i get the pinwheel and it doesnt progress any further than that.
The only way that i can get the computer to boot after this is to hold down the power button, wait for it to turn off... wait 20 seconds, reboot into the Recovery HD and use the disk utility to repair disk and repair permissions on Macintosh HD. This usually works, but one time i actually had to download a new copy of lion. After i repair disk & permissions, i reboot the computer and it responds like nothing has happened. My problem is that i do not want to have to constantly repair the disk and permissions every time i reboot the computer.
I did have one problem before all of this began, but it was about a month before this started occuring. I sent a bunch of unneeded documents and duplicate files to the trash as well as a couple of programs that didnt work anymore using appcleaner. When i tried to empty the trash, it deleted all but one file, or should i say most of the file. It was Dragon Dictate... it deleted everything from the main app package except for a plugin file. The plugin apparantly took up 0 bytes on the disk, and nothing i could do would allow me to delete the file. Finder froze every time i tried to delete the file, or should i say hung at the emptying trash window. Finder was still working. I could still open windows and move files around, however, i couldnt get the trash to empty. I left the screen up all night into the next afternoon, and it still hadnt deleted the file. The only way i could get it to not hang was to remove the file from the trash, and delete what else i had to delete. The only way i was able to get trash to stop hanging was to force relaunch finder by going to Finder>>Force Quit...>> select finder>> relaunch. Sometimes finder would relaunch, and sometimes it wouldnt. The only guarantee that i had to relauch finder was to reboot the computer. Eventually i jsut moved the file to a folder named Can not delete..... Now a month later i have to repair the drive each tiem i want to reboot the computer.
I know the drive isnt failing because i dual boot to windows, and that works flawlessly. No problems with reading/writing, other permissions, hardware, software, bluetooth, network, monitor, sound, camera.... nothing wrong on the windows side.Your problems started when you used AppDelete, it searches for files and can accidentally delete some files as well.
You should never use such a program, it's no subsitute for the developers uninstaller.
Because your issues reside in the Applications folder, a global use, your going to have to perform a backup, erase and resintall of Lion, all your programs and return of files from backup.
As you learned, a OS X overwrtie install isn't going to work.
Also when you use Disk Utility to Erase the Lion Parititon, use the Erase>Security Opiton> Zero aspect, it takes longer but maps off failing sectors which may be responsible for your issues and ones in the future.
Map off as many as these failing sectors as possible, with Zero Erase and Erase Free Space once in awhile. SSD owners need not apply. -
Need to Repair Disk Permissions Everyday? Same errors each time.
I have a White MacBook 4,1 - 2.1 Ghz 3 MB Cache, 800 MHz Bus. It seems like I need to repair the permissions everyday. Every time I do I get the exact same errors, when I start up off the Mac OS X dvd I get no errors under repair disk, but the same errors under repair permissions.
This is what I get:

Permissions repair complete
Anyone know what's wrong? There is no error. You could repair permissions continuously and these same notifications will show up.
Recent updates to iPhoto, Front Row, and an update for RAW compatibility have resulted in these permissions differences. Rather than replacing the old permissions with a new one, the system sees a symbolic "link" (the L you see in front of the permissions).
Nothing is wrong with your machine--we're all getting these notifications. Hopefully a system update will change the permissions for us in the future.

Random Kernel Errors and need to repair disk
After trying to partition for Bootcamp, the computer locked into a Kernel error. I went to validate the disk and discovered that I need to repair the disk. I have tried booting from my OSX installation disk to access the repair disk functionality. I receive a kernel error each and every time I try to boot from disk. Details as follows - please advise.

Is it required that I use the exact disk that shipped with my computer? (Go figure, it's in Minneapolis, I'm in Atlanta...).
The DVD however is in no way scratched or dirty. I will run the hardware test and report back.
Thank you for the leads. -
Disk Utility says I need to repair disk
My computer is running a little sluggish so I went into the Disk Utility and selected verify disk. I got the message below. I inserted the OS X disk but the repair disk option wasn't available. I bought the computer with Panther and got Tiger later, unfortunately I don't have the Tiger disk. How do I fix this problem?
Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
Checking volume information.
Macintosh HD
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

Volume needs repairIf you are running Tiger, you need the Tiger install disc you purchased in order to run Disk First Aid repair.
And withhout your Tiger install disc, you cannot perform an Archive & Install retaining Tiger, etc. so bad move not keeping this in a safe place.
Your only other option is running fsck.

Need to repair disk but dvd is broke
hi. despite using logic9 and ableton8 extensively for some years my actual knowledge of computers and the os is shameful just to warn you
ive often done "repair permissions" but was told to do disk repair also from time to time, so i did the verify disk and was told i need to do a repair of the disk
the trouble is when i got my imac it came with leopard os and unfortunately disk 01 of the 2 osx discs that came with the mac is broken. i have since upgraded to snow leopard and have that disk still in one piece but i think its just an upgrade disk and not sure if i can use that insted to repair the disk?
when it comes to things like this i have no clue which is shameful concidering the extent to which i use my mac
manny thanks
kevkevherb wrote:
well yeah this is my problem as that is the broken disc. so say i one day need to format the hd reinstal osx and recover files from ext hd (like if the mac went for hardware repair) am i basically screwed? or can i still get a leopard disk from apple?
You should still be able to, just call Apple Customer Service with the Mac's serial no. and model (and a credit card handy). Replacement discs are usually around $16 or so, I understand - that's the cost of burning one from the master for that build, post and packing. Take that number as a guide only - it's been quoted for a long time now so it may be different.
Meanwhile, if all you want to do just now is Repair Disk, boot into Single User mode (hold down ⌘S on start up).
When everything stops loading, type
fsck -fy
and press return (note the space between k and the hyphen),
If it comes up as repair carried out and HD seems OK, run the command one more time to ensure it just says HD OK without any repairs noted.
If it says more repairs are needed, run it until either it comes up OK or it says the disc can't be repaired.
To exit, type
reboot and press return.. -
Itunes locks up, and I need to repair disk permissions.
Itunes locks up on my Imac after it has been running for a while. I have had to repair disk permissions, which show many Itunes corrections are needed. I am running the latest Itunes.
Disable Photo Stream in iPhoto's preferences and then go back and reenable it. See if that will jump start the process. If that doesn't help try this: make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto check its preferences to meka sure all is as you expect and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

Signs of HDD trouble? (Need to repair disk periodically on MacBook Pro 8,2)
SUMMARY / TL;DR: Twice in the past year, Disk Utility has been unable to repair the HDD. Should I replace it
I have a MacBook Pro 8,2 (OSX 10.9.5) with 16GB RAM (Crucial) and the original 750GB HDD. I run Disk Utility and/or Onyx about once every month or two to repair permissions and do maintenance. I do so because the computer seems to get slow sometimes. (ie slow to bring up thumbnails in Adobe Bridge or slow on startup whereby after login, it is a few minutes before I can pull up the Dock). About two or three times a year I get a 'disk needs repair' error. Twice in the last year, disk utility has been unable to repair it and I have erased the drive. Once I did a fresh install, once a Time Machine restore. Apple Hardware test returns no problems on regular and extended tests. DiskTools Pro shows no issues.
This machine does a lot of what I consider heavy work. I've used it for a number of Maya and After Effects projects. Most of the time I am working in Photoshop on a Cintiq.
Are these 'disk needs repair' signs of a HDD that needs to be replaced?
I live about 2 hours from the nearest Apple store in Houston and my AppleCare expired in October. If I make the trip to take it in, I feel like there not going to find anything.
Any tips or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Here's what I got from EtreCheck. I noticed a few things I took care of that aren't shown here. Google Drive was causing Finder crashes and there were a few Paragon NTFS Launch Agents.

Hi all,
thanks for your time.
Have tried testing cables both usb and firewire and they work fine with other external hard drives.
1.Have also done finder>preferences>unchecked then checked 'external hd'.then when that didnt work, tried shutting down before repeating but nothing.
2.also saw instructions for PRAM reset and followed that too by pressing option+command+P+R during start-up chime but still nothing.
hope you can help me out!
thanks,
ClaudetteHow was the disk originally initialized? What system was it on before you hook it up to your Mac? Are there any files on it from earlier use?
The message you are getting is telling you that system doesn't see the isk as a Mac volume and you need to initialize it before you can use it. -
Need to repair disk frequently, only happens after running VMWare Fusion, though
I have to repair my disk by booting with command-R at least twice a week. The disk gets corrupted and peformance goes down the toilet.
I have finally isolated that it happens only after I am have run VMWare Fusion 3.1.3. Whether I leave it open or suspend the VM doesn't matter. Of course the solution from VMWare was "pay for an upgrade to Vmware 4", but that is not in the cards for me.
Anyone have similar issues or problems.

Sorry, I should have been clearer on the VMware response. 3.1.3 is the lowest version they run on Lion and should work (minus the bells and whistles of 4), but I think he was just trying to upsell me 4.
Unfortunately, no. While the initial response from VMware was the release of the 3.1.3 update, it was quickly determined from all the reports that people were still experiencing issues with 3.1.3 on Lion. (I suspect it became more prevelant after the 10.7.1 and 10.7.2 updates. For the record, I did not have an issue with 3.1.3 on Lion, but I upgraded to Fusion4 before 10.7.1 came out.) While not everyone experienced an issue with 3.1.3 on Lion, there were enough reports coming in that VMware has pretty much stopped saying 3.1.3 is ok on Lion. But old webpages with outdated info still live on in Google, etc.
On a brighter note, VMware dropped the price of Fusion. Fusion3 was $70 when it was initially released. Fusion4 is $50. So from that point of view, VMware is give you $20 off. -
Attempt to install Mountain Lion has highlighted need for internal disk repair. Even after "repair" ML still says disk is damaged. Attempt to restore from Time Machine back-up failed - cannot 'see' internal HD to restore to. Help! Has attempt to install ML caused these problems or just highlighted existing need to Repair Disk? Even so, why can back-up from Time Machine not see the internal drive to restore to?
Csound1, William & Sig .... thanks for taking the trouble to reply. I fear you are right - I'll need a new disk. I'm booked in at the Apple Genius Bar in Bordeaux, France on Wed ... quite a challenge as my French isn't great! The current internal disk is 500gb, does anyone know whether I can upgrade my 21.5" iMac (circa Oct-2009 vintage) to a larger size internal disk, 1Tb or even 2Tb? I already have one external 2Tb drive and another one on order (I have masses of media stored and more planned as I've just taken up photography). Seems a bit of a pain managing with only 500gb internal storage. OR, can you advise me on how I can store all my photos on my new 2Tb external drive - I can't seem to figure out how to set the path for iPhoto to see them (I can't even figure out where they are stored right now!). Same with iTunes, how do I set the default storage to the external drive (I moved everything manually and then imported them all from the new drive - it worked but seemed very convoluted). Any advice on how to manage multiple drives gratefully received. And thanks again for previous replies.

Repair Disk from CD Installer?
Hi
I been having problem with my mac mini for a while now; stalling, not responding and quieting applications. Repairing permission don't help and the Repair Disk 'button' seem to inactive so I click Verify disk and it told me my disk is corrupted and need to repair disk from installer cd. That what I don't know how.
I had upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard last year. Which cd - leopard or snow leopard I should use and how to do it.
Please help. Thanks
JValeThomas. I thought I should answer your mentally ******** attack on my grandma (JVale). My grandma was truly thankful that you help her to do what she wanted to do and she did printed your Mac Backup Guide link from your ‘last’ reply for her to read later thinking she'll learn something useful from it.
But when my grandma answer The Hatter respond to her question and advising her to use Disk Warrior and SuperDuper and told him its too complicated for her as a ‘simple computer user’ and worried she may end up not be able to use her mac at all. You jump in and attack her to her reply to The Hatter. If she doesn’t want to use Disk Warrior and SuperDuper its her choice. Being old and still learning about her computer, of course, she won’t feel safe to try to do or use things that she don't know or understand. Why would she want to complicate things when she’s happy with her external drive and back up cd. And what is your right to attack her when her reply was not even for you - it for The Hatter????
My grandma (JVale) maybe a ‘simple computer user’ but for her age she did very well of keeping up with today's technology and not let herself left behind. She bought a mac computer and learn how to use it after someone told her apple computer is easy to learn to use for beginners. Now she’s happy that with her mac she could keep in touch with her relatives overseas through skype, yahoo messenger and yahoo mail and telling us all that we should change from pc to mac.
Why it offend you Thomas that my grandma is just a ‘simple computer user’?!! Tell me. Is your own grandparents or parents understand and can do what you could to computer. Of course, not. Its not their generation. DUMMY! Its a shame that with your superior brain never occur to you the possibility that maybe some of the member of the forum are simple computer user oldies who just want a simple solution to their mac problem. So. Who’s mentally disable now - or as you said yourself, the attitude just plain stinks. Yes. You are mentally disable and stinks! What you said TOTALLY APPLY TO YOU.

Repairing disk with disk utility question
hello,
I had a few questions regarding disk utility
1. I have 2 user account on my computer, one admin, one regular
2. run disk utility from regular account...tells me i need to repair disk
3. run disk utility from admin account...tells me the disk is fine
4. I want to run the repair disk function from my boot disk to be safe
5. will it erase my data or corrupt any data at all...I do have backup, just want to be prepared for anythingHello! You can't repair the boot disk unless booted from the install cd/dvd. It sshould do just fine repairing the hd while booted from the cd/dvd but it's always a good idea to have everything backed up. Personally I use multiple bootable clones. Tom

"Volume needs Repair" -Disk Utility--what do i do?
So, my computer was freezing & I had the insight to run Disk Utility on the Repair part, everything comes up great, but on verify, under "Network"--Volume comes up needing repair. I looked it up under About the Mac & see that Volume is empty of info. Here is the report:
"Checking volume bitmap.
Volume bit map needs minor repair
Checking volume information.
Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 3922629 instead of 3922551)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit"
Don't know if it matters but the indented portions of the report were in red, otherwise, in black.
What exactly am I to do with this information? Thanks! In this instance, "Volume" refers to the hard drive. (I quizzed my fiancée - she thought of speaker loudness too... )
10.1, 10.2 etc is the Mac Operating System version number. (ie My eMac is running Mac OS 10.4.9)
If you flip down the CD/DVD drive door on the front of your eMac, there is a sticker that has the serial number, a barcode, then a series of information.
In my case:
1.25G HZ/512MB/160GB HD/DVD-RW/CD-RW/56K MDM
Which means
1.25 GHz processor
512MB of RAM
160GB hard disk drive
DVD & CD burner
56k modem
Note that the "160GB" drive actually only holds 149GB of data - and will show up in Disk Utility as such, because of the difference between binary and actual bit sizes... (check out wikipedia...)
When looking at the list of drives to examine in Disk Utility, the internal hard drive will show up as "internal" in the list of attributes at the bottom of the page... (ie when you click on it, it then shows you
Disk Description - ST.......
Connection BUS - ATA
Connection Type - Internal
Connection ID - Device 0
SMART status should "work" (ie tell you if the drive is good/bad) because you're looking at the internal drive, not an external one.
All that said and done... I still strongly suggest looking inside the eMac's inspection hatch on the base of the computer... if your eMac is freezing up for no apparent reason, it's much more likely to be the capacitor issue than an error found by Disk Utility...

Alright, this just did start happening. All the dmg files that i try to open, i get the same error. A warning box comes up, and it says, "The following disk images failed to mount" Then it lists the name of the device, example..."vlc-0.8.5.dmg"...and
