Need to replace DVD drive

It looks like my Pioneer DVD-RW-DVR-107D will no longer work (read or write)with DVD disks. I still functions with CDs. However, it will not even accept a blank DVD disk.
I got very good advice from this site back in the fall of 2004 concerning where to purchase a replacement drive, including a model number, for myparticular Mac. The replacement did a high volume of great DVDs for me, until yesterday.
Can someone recommend the current optimum drive to replace the DVR-107D on an old Dual G-4 so that I can keep operating for a while? The current drive lasted from October 4, 2004 until now.
Thanks:
Bill Livesay

Hi Bill,
Just recently I added a Pioneer DVR110D to a dual MDD 1.25GHz.
I put the old driver in the lower bay, and the new one in the upper tray.
I bought the drive at OWC (www.macsales.com) for about $60 plus shipping.
With the Tiger update to 10.4.6, this drive is fully Apple supported for burning all kinds of CD's, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DL DVD up to 16x.
Hope this helps.

  • Need to replace DVD drive on my system.

My DVD drive has finally died after years of service and was wondering which of the following would be a good replacement to use:
    Pioneer DVR-710
    Pioneer DVR-112D
I know several people have used the 112D and given good reviews about it. Has anyone used the 710?

  • Macbook Pro 15" Need to Replace DVD drive

I was wondering where I could go to either purchase a new Matshita DVD-R UJ-857 drive for my macbook pro, or a comparable slot-DVD drive. It is out of warranty, and I would rather install it myself to save cash on installation, because I am knowledgeable in computer building. Will apple sell this part, if not, where can I go to purchase it/what drives will fit properly?
    Thanks!

    This is a compatible drive.

  • Is it available to replace DVD driver in MacBook Pro with SSD 512GB Crucial m4 2.5-inch SATA 6Gb?

I'v external DVD driver and I'd like to replace DVD driver with in MacBook Pro with SSD 512GB Crucial m4 2.5-inch SATA 6Gb.  Is it available? All your opinions are welcome.

Here is a post from another thread on this problem.
So here's the deal, don't expect SATA III devices to work on the optical port.  I just went thru this on both my 2009 and 2012 13" MBP's.   The 2009 is SATA II (3Gps) and the 2012 is SATA III (6Gps).   A SATA III SSD (OWC 6G) will only connect at 1.5 Gps on the 2009.  On the 2012, it actually connects at 6 Gps, but every drive I tried crashed (dropped drives, file errors, kernel panics), including a Samsung 830 and  Seagate Momentus XT 750.  Out of desperation, I stuck the (slow 500 Gb) Apple HD in, it connects at 3 Gps and works like a champ.   Check your System Info on SATA info.   If you have a 2009, don't waste your $$$ on high end SSDs or drives.  If you have newer, BEWARE, you're likely to have issues with high end SATA III devices.    On the bright side both Samsung and OCZ V4 work great on the main drive (450 MB/s read) and boots in 10 seconds!!      The optical drive SATA port is a major issue for everyone ( like me ) who buys MBPs because they can trip them out, this is a real nagging issue/obstacle.   This is a firmware issue that needs to be addressed by Apple. I'm hoping for a firmware update and that Apple isn't doing this intentionally.

  • Touchsmart IQ542 - Replacement DVD drive

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement DVD drive for my Touchsmart IQ542? The current drive has decided that it really likes the DVD that is currently in it and won't spit it out, I suspect that this problem will only get worse so now is probably a good time to replace the drive.
Ideally I would like to put a Blu-ray drive in but if that's not possible a replacement for what is already in there would be fine.

  • Need replacement dvd drive for ad-7910A

    Hi,
I have a Lenovo T61 that was dropped and damaged the dvd drive - the dvd drive is a sony nec ad-7910a which is 9.5 mm thick and IDE (i believe). I tried everywhere for an exact replacement, but apparently this dvd drive is obsolete. Anyone know which available dvd drive would be a suitable replacement?
    Thanks

    dvd drive or dvd burner?
DVD Burner Multi (Hitachi LG the best one good for all discs) - P/N 39T2679
DVD Burner Multi (Panasonic the worst one in my opinion) - P/N  39T2677
    DVD/CD Burner Combo (Hitachi LG) - P/N 39T2687
Don't think there is DVD reader available for the T61 (maybe i am wrong) there is one available for the old T4x series which you can also use but facia is slightly different, but won't affect the performance, you can get them on the ebay for couple of dollars.

  • Satellite M70 replacement DVD drive advice needed

    Hi
The Mat****a US-841s DVD drive in my M70 has expired.
I would like to replace it with a Sony Optiarc, but I notice it says operating system Vista and I've got XP Home.
I have spent hours researching this and I can't find a drive that's compatible, can anyone tell me if the Sony is ok or recommend a suitable alternative?
I don't want to fork out money and then have lots issues I just want it to work straight out of the box although minor fiddling isn't a problem..
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Hey Andy,
I dont know if the other drive that you mean will working in your Satellite M70 but I would recommend checking the user manual of your notebook. There you can find a list of compatible drives they are pretested. You should find this information on the first pages I think.
    Check this!!!
The point is that not all drives are compatible with all notebooks so you should buy a pretested drive.

  • Replace DVD Drive

I have an HP 7320 slimline desktop, running XP 32 bit. I'm upgrading to 2 gig memory, and need to replace the DVD drive. It is IDE; however, the hard drive is SATA. On the motherboard, it looks like there is a second, open connector for another sata device. My question is it available for a new DVD drive? I do not like the cable for the IDE drive. The problem with the current drive is when I push the button to open the drive it "kerchunks" a couple of times, but the drive does not open. I tried using a straight paperclip & punched into the small hole on the front of the drive, I can feel it engaging in some sort of a button inside, but the drive does not open. Can I replave with a SATA drive????

    Hi:
Yes, you should be able to, if you have a SATA power connector near the DVD drive you plan to replace with a sata one.
You will also need a SATA data cable, of course.
I did that on an old HP d530 CMT.  I didn't have a SATA power connector near the optical drive, so I had to get a Molex to SATA power adapter.
    Below is what I got.
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details-print.asp?EdpNo=3151189&Sku=ULT4010...
Mine had an IDE HDD and IDE DVD.
So after replacing both with SATA and those thin data cables, it really opened up the real estate in the case for better airflow.

  • CD-ROM error on boot after replacing DVD drive -Qosmio F20-574

Ok so I have a Toshiba Qosmio F20/574 and I'm trying to replace the factory DVD drive (TEAC DV-W28E) with a Liteon DS-8A1P (f/w CX12). With or without a DVD drive Im getting a CD-ROM error on boot. The only time I do not get it is when I boot with the factory DVD drive.
Here are the things I've tried...
    -Cleared the CMOS
-Removed the bezel to make sure its plug all the way in
-used the EEPROM utility to set the drive to slave.
-tested the drive in another laptop
-unistalled the factory dvd drive through device manager and tried to boot with the new dvd drive
Here are the things I found weird...
    - in the BIOS (ACP BIOS 1.30) under Device I/O it shows the Hard Drive and cd drive but its not listed by name, its showing only the IRQ of the master and secondary IDE controller (Built-in HDD Primary IDE (1F0H/IRQ14), CD-ROM Secondary IDE (170H/IRQ15)). This doesnt change, even if I boot without a DVD-Drive.
-There is no BIOS update available for this laptop. This is a Toshiba from Japan and Ive tried using Qosmio F20 BIOS 1.40 from another region but it doesnt work.
-I cant seem to find an update firmware for the Liteon DS-8A1P (CX17)
I cannot think of anything else to try. I really need help! Any ideas?

    Hello
your Liteon DS-8A1P (CX17) currently in SLAVE or CABLE SELECT Mode
you must make it as MASTER
Toshiba accepts drives in MASTER settings only
you can not make it by jumper , because there is no jumper inside the drive
you can make it master by:
1-firmware update to the drive to make it MASTER.
2-by soldring pin 47 to pin 45 inside the drive (not recomended).

  • Replacement DVD drive - broken Mashita drive

    Hi,
I have a broken Mashita DVD burner, probably the UJ-845-B (I already removed it), but this one is no longer available. I'm looking for a replacement internal Drive. I've seen people using Pioneer, Sony and other types of Mashita DVD burners, but usually with other iMacs.
    I've got some questions:
    1. What DVD burners are compatible with my iMac G5.
    2. If I install a newer model Mashita will I need to update firmware and where can I get it (or does Apple provide it)
    3. Other things I need to take into consideration before buying a new one
    Thanks,
    Eric

    Hi,
Just some info on my own question:
I purchased a NEC/Sony Optiarc AD-7633A. I removed the old Mashita ( "How-To" documentation can be found on Apple's website) and then replaced the bezel (front side where CD/DVD's go in) from the Optiarc with the old one from Mashita. Some simple cutting of little clips is necessary to make things fit well. Place things back and works like a charm.
No updating of Firmware necessary and the Apple immediately recognizes the DVD drive
Good luck for all of you who need to replace their own Superdrive.
    Eric

  • Looking for replacement DVD drive

Have a P6650z desktop, and the dvd drive needs to be replaced. I intentionally didn't get a Dell b/c I was thinking that I'd be getting better hardware.
OK I'm looking at a couple of DVD drives, but I'm not sure if they will fit the bay of my Pavillion or not--the Pavillion has a special eject button on the outside of the bay itself. Could I install either of these drives into my Pavillion?

    Hi,
Based on this link, your machine uses standard bays that means any standard Optical drive should fit. Do you have any plan to add Blue Ray drive on your machine ? If YES, you can go for BD drive now, probably you have to pay around $10 more.

  • Replacement DVD drive T430

I need to replace the optical drive on my wife's Thinkpad T430 and I just want to check compatibility.  Does the same drive fit in the T430s and the T430?
Here are some drives I found.  Just don't want to order one and have it not be the right one.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The T430s drive is "ultrabay slim" (9.5mm) and the T430 uses "ultrabay enhanced (12mm). The slim drives will fit in the T430, but not very well. They are the same electrically. The 2 links you show have pictures of drives that were pulled from older machines.
This is what a slim drive from a T430s looks like:

  • Can Apple supply replacement DVD drives (IDE) for 2008 Mac Pros?

I have tried to find replacements for two faulty internal Superdrives on-line, with no luck.
Today I went into my local Apple Store and was advised to call with my serial number.
After calling & waiting I was told I needed to be put through to the technical department.
That turned out to be the Applcare line.
My Applecare expired a while ago & the office was closed anyway.
I haven't been able to find out directly from Apple if they can still supply replacement drives, does anyone here know (anyone actually got some)?
Please help me clear the junk of my desk and rid me of tatty plastic Samsung drives....

yeah, I think you nailed it there. technically Apple does still provide service for the 2008 Mac pro's but you'd have to take it in and wait.  Your mileage may vary-As you (and I) have found out, it'd be cheaper and easier just to go out, buy a new drive, and install the darn thing yourself. Besides, Optiarc (the original drive makers) aren't in business anymore, and....yeah....you'll probably find E sata  DVD drives 97% of the time, so probably go with that. I bought from MCE tech... an Atapi Blu Ray drive, which I had to buy because my superdrive bit the dust,  and a new DVD burner would have cost at least 50, so, I figured why not. In a pinch, you can use an ATAPI/IDE dvd burner from a PC  with no problem. Just plug 'er right in, and make sure the jumper is set to 'cable select' .. as for Pioneer, I know that OWC has the Pioneer blu-ray drive, but I haven't been able to find any plain Pioneer DVD burners, at least not around here.
So, i guess in answer to your question: technically, yes, but you'd have to bring in your mac pro and pay their prices.

  • Need New CD/DVD Drive

Need to replace my internal drive. Any suggestions? Preferably one with a DVD burner.

    Good Morning,
I hope you find this article useful, I did. I bought my superdrive from Other World Computing. At the time (June 2006) the model was Pioneer DVR-111D.
I have an older eMac, so there were some tense moments, when the article was not enough to guide me. The thing that really was frustrating was when I went to reconnect the display connector. The connector housing was so tight up against something (don't remember what is was), but I actually bent a pin and my screen was in a lovely green. I took it apart again and I had to remove the locking snap on the one side to make it work. I has been working fine ever since.
Here is the link to the article:
