Need to replace Superdrive

I screwed up trying to make my superdrive regionfree, so now I need a new one (since there is no firmware update, or any firmware downloads for the shaite!). At this point I'm inches from ******* on the f*#cker!!
Back to the point; does anyone have a suggestion for a new DVD-drive to replace my Matshita uj-825?
Please help, mac in distress!

I buy mine from macsales.com & if you blow the firmware up trying to hack it, that's on you. Blame Hollywood for this, Apple could care less about reigon codes, but beings they offer DVD player out of the box & the movie industry dictates the licensing requirements, this is what happens.
Welcome to apple discussions. Friendly advice: don't jack with firmwarez on the net & stay cool.

  • Off-brand options for replacing SuperDrive ?

    Hello all.
I have a MacBook Pro 17", late 2009 with a bad SATA Superdrive that I need to replace. I'd like to know two things:
    1. Can I use any 9.5mm SATA slot-loading DVD drive?
    2. Anyone have any suggestions that might be a fast or more reliable drive that the Matsushita that the laptop comes with?
I ask #1 because I am traveling in Colombia and anything Apple cost liteally 3X as much as in the states.
    Thanks for any feedback.

this claims to be an updgrade:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/superdrive/MacBook_Pro_17
there are other options, also on this site though:
you may not like this suggestion but it may benefit you in the end. there are options to make your optical bay area, another HDD (or ssd) which can potentially expand your storage capabilities. so anything you're running via cd could be uploaded via any usb optical drive (except the apple made usb superdrive which will only work with the macbook airs and the minimac's), which will greatly reduce your carrying load but boost your storage space to digitally back up your optical information and allowing you to get any option of usb optical device.
this will let you take out your optical drive, and add another 2.5" storage drive. http://eshop.macsales.com/search/optical+bay
these may all void your warranty since these are not apple supported.

I have an iphone 4s that is  over 2 years old. The phone's battery is no longer able to hold a  charge for an acceptable length of time.  Assuming I need to replace the battery, how much will this cost at an Apple store?

Basically, I'm new to Apple, despite using them before, but I've never actually owned my own.
Since buying this phone off a colleague at work, I seem to be having problems with it. First, I noticed how rubbish the battery life is, then my charger almost went up in flames and thirdly my camera lense is scratched beyond belief.
I know the phone isn't within warranty, although I was lead to believe it was before and during buying it, so basically I'm extremely disappointed with the general make up of iPhone's considering they cost such a **** of a lot of money, you'd think they'd be built to last.
Back to my main point, how much would it cost for a new battery? Or a new camera lense if anyone can help me with that? (I know that the back of the phone was refurbished just before my buying it, so literally just the camera lense)
    Thanks!
So basically it sounds like you bought an abused used iPhone and somehow that makes the phone subpar because dispite the abuse it should still last forever and look like new? Batteries don't last forever, even under ideal conditions, so your expectatoins are unrealistic. Take it in and have an estimate done.

Here's the steps to follow if your printer isn't turning on.

  • I need to replace the HD on a p7-1206 with a SSD

I need to replace the 2TB system hard drive in a Pavilion p7-1206 with a 120GB SSD. What is the best procedure for transferring the Win 7 OS to the much smaller SSD? I created the recovery disc set. After starting the Recovery Discs to install the OS on the SSD an error message said that SSD capacity was less than the original disc and stopped the install process. Do I need a procedure that will reproduce all 4 partitions on the SSD in working order or can some partitions be ignored?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Portege Z830 - screen has been broken and I need to replace it

    Hi
I have Toshiba Portege z830. My screen has been broken and I need to replace it.
Is it possible to install some IPS screen instead of original LTN133AT25-601? Which IPS screen is compatible with LTN133AT25-601?

    Hi
The original LCD which was used in Z830 was an 13.3"(HD) 1366 x 768 TFT Color LCD.
So if you want to use other display, then you should pay attention to the screen size and the connectors.
I think these are most important key elements.

  • Do I need to replace my Hard Drive?

My Mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro recently was not able to boot on startup when I reset the NVRAM. I looked on the commands and there was something to do with a hard drive error. I had to reinstall OS X for me to use it again.
Since then my computer has been unusably laggy at times and performance has dropped. YouTube and other videos will lag uncontrollably and Minecraft runs at about 1 FPS. I am also running bootcamp and problems are consistent on Windows 7 as well. Do I need to replace the Hard Drive or just completely reformat it and reinstall OS X from a bootable disk?
    THANKYOU

You shoudn't consider replacing your drive unless you know that's the problem. AHT, to the best of my knowledge, does not do surface scans on drives and it can't tell you if you have bad sectors. It can, however, identify other problems so running tests on the system might help you.
Other things to consider are the following:
How much free disk space do you have? If you're running out of disk space the system will not be able to swap out properly or easily and your system will bog down.
How much memory are you using? If you're using a lot then swapping will be rampant and your system will slow down.
Are there problematic applications that don't work properly that are consuming too much memory or hitting your system with a lot of disk reads and writes?
If you're using Mountain Lion, have you upgraded to 10.8.4? If not, do so. A lot of your problems may disappear.
The easiest way to check the first 3 above is with Activity Monitor. You can find a good write up on it with the following link:
    http://www.scsc-online.com/Activity%20Monitor.html
I'm sure there are others on the web that are every bit as good as well. If you're still convinced your drive is the problem then check out this link for a list of drive testing tools:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1544280
That list is pretty much the web's de facto standard list of reliable hard drive testing tools currently available for Macs, and it's reasonably up to date, unlike some of the other lists on the web that are 5 years old or older. I really wouldn't assume it's the drive until you check out other stuff first.
    Good luck, diddypants.

what exactly do i need to look for when i'm at a store or online?
    what size hard drive, any? 250GB, 500GB, 750GB, 1TB
    3.5" SATA
    7200RPM
    does cache matter?
    anything else?
people's responses to: Need to replace my late 2006 imac hard drive - what should i be looking for to replace it?
    1. You can use any 3.5" Sata drive, WD or Seagate would be good choices.
    2. Do not use "green" drives like the WD Blue series. WD Black are fine as are Seagates.
    3. The 2T green will work fine in the Intel iMac's. I always suggest using the quieter and cooler running Blue's or Green's in the iMac's.
    4. Personally I have upgraded the Hard Drive in several Early Core Duo's using both 320GB and 500GB WD Cavair Blue's.
    5. WD Caviar Blue or WD Caviar Green, they run cooler and quieter than the WD Black or Seagate's.
    6. I'm very happy with the WD Caviar Blue that replaced my factory installed 160GB Seagate HD a few months ago.
i've found some good DIY tutorials for install

thanks for the quick reply kappy,
i plan to purchase a new imac when they are actually shipped, in stores, and i know all my handicap assisted devises will work on it
you say "Do not buy a drive designed for SATA 3 6 Gb/s interfaces as some may not work on the controller in your iMac"
at frys it breaks the groups like this:
    Interface (32)
    SATA/300 (17)
    SATA/600 (9)
    PATA/100 (6)
could you take a look at this link to frys and recommend a hard drive

like you said it's got a limited life and just need something to get by till the new imacs arrive

  • I I have a late 2005 power PC G5 that I want to bring back to life.  I need to replace the original hard drive, a Maxtor 250 GB Sata.  Can I replace it with modern drives, SATA 5-6 etc?

I have a late 2005 power PC G5 that I want to bring back to life.  I need to replace the original hard drive, a Maxtor 250 GB Sata.  Can I replace it with modern drives, SATA 5-6 etc?

I knew I should never get rid of my old G5's.  By the way, there is a browser still supported for the PPC, TenFourFox, if you're not using it already.  Go to the Floodgap website (they author it)  download it for free.  The only thing it doesn't support is the Flash plugin, but the browser works great. Other video types are supported.  It's based on Firefox, and runs most of the plugins and add-ons. It's very fast, and beats all other browsers on the browser compatibility and speed test.  That's now my default on my G5's.  Firefox and Safari are no longer supported.  As far as the OS, both Tiger and Leopard were solid for me.  The reason, as I stated before, was iMovie.  The version in Tiger with iLife was far superior to what Apple changed it to.  They 'dumbed it down' for the masses.  Even the newest iLife 11 on my Mac Pro quad isn't is good, in my opinion.  So Leopard should be fine for you.  It's a much larger browser in terms of sheer megabytes and disk space, but it's fine.  As far as getting an OS disc, I'm seeing Tiger for about $45.00, Leopard for $50 - 60.00 on that famous auction site.  As far as RAM, I have 8GB in my G5 2.3, but you should check Activity Monitor when you are running your apps.  See how much green slice you have left (unused RAM).  You might find you don't need eight.  A Mac Pro will grab more free RAM than a PPC machine will.  I have a hard time maxing out use of my 8 on the PPC.  Not true with the eight on my Mac Pro.  The OS doesn't hesitate to grab and use it.  You might be OK with 6GB on your PPC. More will not make you faster, as long as you still have free RAM available.  As far as backup on your resurrected machine:  look for a firewire enabled backup if can.  Use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) and make a clone backup.  Next time your PPC machine wipes out the hard drive, just take your Firewire drive and plug it into another PPC machine, and you can select it as your boot drive. You'll be back and running in five minutes.  You can also take the physical drive out of your enclosure, and put it in your tower to replace the failed drive, and you'll be back to where you were in less than ten minutes, OS and all.  The PowerMac has an 800 port, so you can do the 800 on the machine to an 800 port on your backup. A firewire 800 to 800 cable is only about $8.00.  It runs nice and fast through the 800 port.  I like the OWC Mercury Extreme enclosures.  They use USB, Firewire 800, and eSATA, so all your options are open.
