Need to restart from OS X CD

I need to reboot from OS X disk but optical drive not reading disks. Can you tell me best way to go about this?
Cheers

Hi, ycartlee, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
After you start up normally from your internal hard drive (not the OS installer CD/DVD), can your optical drive read the installer CD/DVD when you insert it? Does the drive read any other CDs or DVDs?
If the drive has trouble with most or all discs but seems to be trying to read them, you may want to try a drive cleaning kit (available at any DVD movie rental shop). If it only has trouble with one or a few discs, those discs themselves are probably dirty or damaged. If the drive seems totally inert (no sounds, won't pull in or eject discs), the drive is dead or has become disconnected from your computer's logic board.

  • Running Lion. Verified Disk. Warned HD corrupt, and need to restart from disk and run repair. No idea how to do this without a physical disk.

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro has been acting up a little. I tried the usual repair options: repair permissions, zap P-ram, and Safe Boot (although I've never gotten the machine to Safe Boot properly since installing Lion). I ran Verify Disk and it stopped part way through, saying that the HD is corrupt. It instructed me to start up from the (installation?) disk and run the repair function from the disk utility. (I've included a screen shot of the Verify Disk screen). I have no idea how to go about this without a physical start up disk (Lion). I do have the disks that came with the computer at the time of purchase (Will one of those work?).
    Thanks,
    JGW

    Thank you!
I was able to access the recovery function and used the Disk Utility to repair my HD.
Would you recommend that I still re-install Lion?
Again, thank you for taking the time to help me!
    Best wishes,
    JGW

I'm trying to upgrade from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard but my macbook keeps ejecting the disc.  It started to install the first time and said it needed to restart to finish, restarted but ejected the disc.  It ejects every time now.  I've also installed the 10.5.8 combo update but that didn't help it.  I've tried restarting the macbook with the disc in, holding c, all that.  Why won't this work?!

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

Just to make certain, you inserted the original installation disk and started the MBP holding down the C key?  Did the Optical drive reject the disk or did it just spin?  If the former, the lens in the drive may be dirty and needs to be cleaned.  If the latter, you will have to take it to an Apple repair facility.
    Ciao.

After upgrading my operating system, after being on different pages for sometime, i get a shaded that comes down and says i need to restart my computer then tells me to send in error report when it reboots....what do i do

This is called a Kernel panic.

Did you do anything else apart from ungrading OS?
    Did you add memory?
Bad or not well seated memory modules are often a cause of kernel panic

  • PCI-GPIB does not like returning from computer power-save mode. I need to restart the application. Uggh! Customer not happy.

It seems volatile memory is lost on the PCI GPIB Card. When the system returns from power-save, I cannot get to my GPIB instruments. I have to close the application and restart it. I've tried unregistering and reregistering the gpib globals and resetting the device interfaces (reissuing the ibdev command) without luck. I am using Visual Basic 6, but I also get the Measurement and Automation Explorer to fail in the same way, so I don't think it is my development environment.

Can you change your power save settings? What operating system
    are you running?
Also, some BIOS's have options for power save. For example, recent
IBM's can be set to maintain power to all peripherals, or only to main
memory. Of course, you would want it to maintain power.
I suspect the GPIB board and its driver are completely unable to
handle power save operation. It probably was never considered while
    it was being designed.

Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
          logo appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

Sounds like you may have a hardware problem since it won't read from DVD, and it is only a year and a half old.  Hopefully all it is, is bad RAM*:

About once a month, when my computer goes to sleep and I wake it up again I get the dreaded 'You need to restart your computer message'. Like I said, it only happens about once a month and not every time I wake it up.

  • Trying to recover from constant kernel panics 'You need to restart your...'

Since last night I've been having major problems with my MBP. After installing some software on my Windows 7 Bootcamp partition, and following a restart, I got a kernel panic and the message "You need to restart your computer.." in 5 languages, and the screen would freeze.
Disconcertingly the desktop video was totally screwed up - the best way I can describe it is that a looked like a really, really bad 8-bit display, with huge blocky pixels.
Multiple attempts at pressing and holding the power button, then restarting, simply replicated the problem. In the end I was eventually able to boot up using a superduper clone. I decided to reformat the MBP HDD and copy the clone over. However, during the process the screensaver came on and froze the system, so I had to restart and repeat the process, this time switching off energy saver preferences and the screensaver.
So I'm back up and running (for now). I'm about to restore my energy preferences and test out the screen saver. Fingers crossed, but in the meantime, has anyone else come across an issue like this?
I've got 3rd party RAM installed, have had it for over a year, so not sure if this is the problem (hasn't been so far). As part of my initial troubleshooting I tried resetting PRAM but this had no discernible effect, other than to make the patchy block video more uniform (if that makes sense?)
I haven't tried the Apple Hardware Test yet, just got to find my original disks! Spec of MBP as per signature below.
Lastly, after I restored my system a browser window appeared, pointing to a file in my system library which contained the following:
    # File lib/activerecord/connection_adapters/postgresqladapter.rb, line 116
    def quote(value, column = nil)
    if value.kind_of?(String) && column && column.type == :binary
    "'#{escape_bytea(value)}'"
    else
    super
    end
    end
Any views / comments / tips greatly appreciated.
