Need to restart to see external devices

Okay. This is a weird one.
I have a printer (Officejet 6210xi) hooked up to my Airport Extreme (dual-band), as well as an external hard drive.
Nearly every time I want to print, I need to pull the plug on the AEX to restart it and get it to recognize the printer.
I admit, I haven't tested this with the external hard drive.
Any suggestions of how to fix this or what else to try?
Thanks!
—I can add any info you need, just let me know.

Are both connected at the same time even though not powered on?

Fire Wire: MBP OS X.4.11 Can't see external devices. PLEASE HELP!
My MBP will not "see" my new MB or my back-up drive—both connected via a firewire 400 (6 pin) cable. Both running Tiger X.4.11
I have used this cable to connect my MBP and a TiBook in the past as well as to back-up onto the LaCie e-drive.
I have run "disk repair" and "permissions" on both machines.
BTW—"permissions" are regularly out of wack on the MBP. But, the disk is OK according to Disk Utilities.
I also cannot put the machine to sleep after logging out. Has a hard time shutting down as well. Sometimes I need to force a re-boot.
Can't run Disk Doctor because I don't have a bootable disk yet. It's coming via snail mail.
The new MB "sees" the e-drive connected with the same cable.
I can't transfer my files to the new MB nor can I back up.
Is it time for a "clean install"? Makes me nervous that I cannot backup before trying anything drastic.
    Can someone please help me?
    Thanks in advance.

Put the more recalcitrant computer into Target Drive mode by starting it with the T key down until you see the yellow on blue screen. Then connect it to the other machine by firewire cable while both are already awake.
I hope that you did not do any upgrades while you had external drives connected... that is an automatic problem. Always disconnect from externals and accessories before doing any upgrades. Always back up before doing any upgrades.
Firewire networking is not the same as using a computer in Target Disc mode. In Target disc mode, you are using the internal drive of the Td computer as an external. That should allow you to run disk utility. Do use the proper disc utility version for the OSX version that is on problem drive. ie don't use the Leopard disc utility for the Tiger disc or vice versa.

  • Cant  see external devices using firewire in Final Cut HD

After installing iLife anad iWork I stopped being able to import from an external device over firewire using Final Cut Express 2. I upgraded my OS to X 10.4.7 and that didn't help. I upgraded to Final Cut HD 3.5 and that didn't help either. I am able to capture in iMovie just fine. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Did you update quicktime over a previous version?
There are some issues with some computer configuration, firewire, iMovie, FCE and QT 7.

  • W540 - need to restart to see second hard drive

I installed a second hard drive via a hard drive caddy, it works fine but sometimes after the computer wakes I cannot see it anymore and need to reboot to see it again.
It's not visible when I browse my computer, and the shortcut I placed on my desktop does nothing when I click on it.
Both drives are SSD's.  Windows 8.1.
    Anyone else having this problem?

    Hi Aslg,
Check if there is any drivers for that adapter or you can also check with updating the system BIOS once.
If you are trying to connect SSD drive, please download Solid State Drive firmware and install it.
    Hope this helps.

Connect the drive and open a finder window.
Does the drive show up in the sidebar with your Macintosh HD.
If it does you have a software problem and let me know so we can troubleshoot that problem.
If it does not show up, it could still be software but we should proceed as follows.
    First, reset the pram.
From the instructions on the apple support site.
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (the key with the apple symbol), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
4.. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
If still not visible, follow this article's instructions.
What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338
After this if it is still not visible:
Choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click More Info, and then click FireWire.
If the device appears then you have a software issue.
    - now we would resume troubleshooting software
If the device does not appear you likely have a hardware issue.

  • Find external device without restarting?

I have a firewire card recorder (from Sony camcorder) which is supposed to appear as a external drive. If i plug and switch it on BEFORE turning my iMac on - it's OK. I see it, i can read/wtite, so on. But if my iMac is already working - i plug me device, switch it on and... see nothing.
The question is: how can i make my iMac see the device WITHOUT RESTARTING? Somewhat like this: plug, turn on, push the button - there it is! I'm sure suggestion is simple, but i don't know how to find it in OS manuals. Thanx.

Hi! No. Disk Utility doesn't see it.
    Ytre it is
    http://www.sony.ru/biz/view/ShowContent.action?articlesection=16&site=bizenRU&contentId=1201538210014
while used with PC/WIndows it's automaticaly mounted as disk. But with iMac - just thru system restart...

  • Is there any way to see if a file has been saved to an external device, or to see a history of which external devics have been connected to an iMac in 10.6.7?

I have a client that believes someone came into his house and took some digital files (photos, stored in iPhoto) off of his iMac (2.66GHz running v10.6.7)
He usually just sleeps his computer while away and requires no password to login.  Is there any way to see if an external device or CD/DVD has been used to save files?  Is there any wya to see the history of a file and determine if it has been saved anywhere else?  I know this is a long shot, but I figure it is worth asking.

Will it continue to say that the device is in lost mode if it has been restored?  My Find Iphone is saying that when the device is connected to the internet that it will be locked and that a message (that I typed in) will appear. It also says that I will be notified and that a sound will occur when it is connected. Now my iphone has been updated to the ios7, but I don't think his ipod was updated.

  • My HD needs to be reformatted according to Disk Utility, but even when I use an external device for startup, Disk Utility cannot reformat the HD

I have a Macbook with a 500 GB Hard Drive. A routine check on Disk Utility told me the disk needed to be reformatted. I restarted from an external USB drive, but when I try to use Disk Utility to repair the HD or to reformat it, Disk Utility is unable to do anything with the HD (cannot repair, cannot erase, cannot reformat the HD).  Is there a utility App that can help me with this, or is the HD unrecoverable?

    Hi
Thanks very much for your reply. We have been starting up from a backup (USB) drive and use the disk utility that is on the backup drive so the internal (problem) HD is not being used for anything (except for wanting to repair it). Still Disk Utility cannot reformat or repair the drive. I have also run Onyx but it tells me everything is OK on the drive.
But I have made a little progress. Using my old install disk for Snow Leopard (10.6.3) I have managed to do a fresh install of the system on the internal HD. Unfortunately, I also asked the install disk to transfer/migrate the settings and documents from the backup drive back onto my internal HD. The install appeared to work, but then it got hung up on copying the documents from my backup drive to the HD. After letting it sit for 2 days without going anywhere, I stopped the install process. I am going to try again, just using my Snow Leopard  CD to install Snow Leopard, and nothing else. If that works, I will then get on to the problem of copying the rest of the settings and documents from my backup.
But since the Mac works OK off the USB  backup, and will also run off the install CD, I am guessing the problem is with the HD and the only solution might be to replace it if I can't repair it. But the macbook is several years old, and I am not sure it is worth buying a new HD for it.

  • I NEED TO SHARE MY LR CATALOGS FROM LAPTOP TO MAC AND EVEN IPAD WITH NO EXTERNAL DEVICES - I WOULD LIKE ANY EDIT I MAKE FROM ONE COMPUTER TO BE MADE ON THE OTHER - HOW DO I DO THIS ?? THANKS!!

I NEED TO SHARE MY LR CATALOGS FROM LAPTOP TO MAC AND EVEN IPAD WITH NO EXTERNAL DEVICES - I WOULD LIKE ANY EDIT I MAKE FROM ONE COMPUTER TO BE MADE ON THE OTHER - HOW DO I DO THIS ?? THANKS!!

All the info you do with your image files is stored in the Lightroom Catalog file. The Catalog file cannot be located on a network it must have a physical connection to the computer.
While the Catalog is in use a LOCK file will be temporarily placed alongside which prevents its use by any other device.

Airport Express (the small Airport device, which is the only one with an audio connection) works through Airtunes, which only works with iTunes. The computer won't send ALL system sound to the Airport. If you actually want to send sound outside of iTunes, use Airfoil.
