Need to restore but iPod not recognized in iTunes

I have the black iPod Classic 80GB for over two years and now it's getting some problems:
First, after it synced it would automatically eject, then go into "ejected charging mode" if I left it plugged in. I thought nothing of this, really.
Second, when plugged in the iPod screen goes to the one where it says, "Connected: Eject before disconnecting," but does not appear in my iTunes or in My Computer under my iPod's name and its drive.
I unplugged and rebooted my iPod since it froze, then plugged it back in, but it just did some cycle of the "Connected", "Ejecting", and "OK to disconnect" screens, but it never disconnected, but instead went back to "Connected", then repeats.
Now I plugged it in again and iTunes says it can't play the files on it, so I have to restore it. Problem is, it doesn't show up in my iTunes at all! However, it shows up in My Computer.
Help please?

If you're under warranty, exchange it! I did this today after appt at store, delted all apps and reloaded, with the same result. Technician informed me that Classics (I have 120GB) have a firmware issue that cannot be updated externally, so they exchange them with a new one.

  • Ipod not recognized by itunes or windows.

Hi there, I have an 80gb Ipod classic which is not recognized by itunes or windows. The "Use iTunes to restore" message appears on my ipod but when I connect it to my pc itunes does not recognize it. Windows shows a message informing me that I need to format the drive but is then unable to do so. Ipod will not go into disk mode either. I have tried reinstalling itunes and using the ipod in a different usb drive. I have also connected it to a mac and a windows pc but nothing happens. I have tried to use the diagnostics mode on the ipod but that will not work either. I am wondering if my ipod's hard drive is corrupted.

    Hello,
My iPod is not being recognized by iTunes or internet
explorer. It used to, but not anymore. It just
dosent show up when I connect it to my computer.
Also, the "do no disconnect" sign does not appear on
my iPod when I connect it. It is still able to
    recharge, though.
have u tried a different usb port?
I read that I have to restore it. I have tons of
songs in my iPod that I do NOT want erased! How can
I back these songs up? I have some songs on my iPod

  • 3G Ipod not recognized by itunes (Windows XP)

    Hi,
I've had a 3G ipod for about three years and it worked fine. About a month ago I plugged it in (into the USB port) and iTunes did not recognize it at all. iTunes froze up and my iPod did not appear in the left hand column. My computer somewhat recognizes it (only as a mass storage device) but when i try to open it via My Computer the window freezes. Internet Explorer and other programs work fine when the iPod is plugged in but iTunes and the iPod itself just freeze up.
I ran iPod diagnostics and the output file ended with:
"The iPod updater logging file cannot be found."
I tried putting it in disk mode but it didn't fix the problem either. Now when i plug in my iPod an "Autoplay" box pops up and after about two minutes it goes away, without really doing anything. This is one of the first iProblems i have not been able to fix since i got my iPod and i would really appreciate it if anyone could help me out.
    Thanks alot,
    NW2190

This may help some of you: my problem was that my PC did recognize my iPod, but my iTunes would not.
I have a 4th G iPod, and we installed iTunes 7 this past week on the family PC (a WinXP machine with latest Microsoft updates). Over the weekend, I loaded a few CDs into iTunes and made some corrections in the library info (fixing typos and mis-matched album cover art that iTunes 7 had "thought" we wanted).
Then, I tried to synch my iPod (4thG) to iTunes 7, but iTunes would not recognize the iPod. The PC recognized it just fine, but iTunes came up with a banner saying that iTunes 7 could not read the iPod, and telling me to "Restore" the iPod. My problem, though, was that the "resore" function is imbedded inside iTunes 7, creating a catch-22: I needed to restore the iPod to get iTunes to work with it, but I needed iTunes to work with it in order to do the restore.
After rebooting my PC several times and plugging and unplugging my USB connection for good measure, I had an idea: since my PC reconized the iPod, I would use Windows to help me. And it worked!!!!
    Here's what I did:
    1. Plug iPod into USB port on PC
    2. Make sure iTunes is CLOSED
    3. Go to "My Computer" in Windows
    4. Select the iPod "drive" and Open the file list
    5. Open the iPod Control folder (I forget what the folder actually was named, but it is a folder with about 5 or so small files that include things like "prefs" and "index")
    6. Then DELETE all those files
    7. Close out of "My Computer"
    8. Disconnect iPod from the PC
    9. Reconnect the iPod to the PC
As soon as I did that, iTunes soon opened, and it went right to the iPod options menu. I could then -- FINALLY -- choose "restore" in iTunes and start reloading my iPod again.
    Hope this helps.

  • IPod NOT recognized in iTunes...'Recognized' in My Computer...W7

Hello, just joined community, my name is Dominick, glad to be here.
So all of the sudden my iPod is NOT being recognized by iTunes.  I have the most recent version of iTunes.  I am running Windows 7 64-bit on my Lenovo Laptop.  Long story/synopsis below...
It is being recognized in 'My Computer.'  It is recognized as "Removable Disk."  If I click on it, it then says "You need to format the disk in drive G [USB port its in] before you can use it".  Then asks me if I want to Format Disk or Cancel.  However, if I ask it to Format disk, it fails to do so every time.  After failing, it then says...
"Windows can't Format G...Check to see that disk and drive are connected properly, make sure that the disk is not read-only, and then try again.  For more information, search Help for read-only files and how to change them."
Can anyone provide some clarity on this statement?  Can I change its properties to read-only and will that work?
Again, my iPod is NOT being recognized in iTunes, so I cannot restore it.  I figured that would be my best solution at this point.  When I run Diagnostics in iTunes and run the "Device Connectivity Tests", it tells me all 3 Support Services are working/green amd 2 of the 3 Ports are working/green...the only not working/red item is "No iPod...found", which of course just means itunes cant recognize my iPod when plugged in...back to square 1.
Also, I came across the Apple page dedicated to troubleshooting an iPod that is NOT recognized in iTunes, but is recognized in My Computer.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363?viewlocale=en_US
However, after exhausting all options listed here, my iTunes is still not recognizing my iPod.  I then tried uninstalling iTunes and all its component programs, e.g. Quicktime, Bonjour, Apple Device Services, etc. and reinstalling and this did not work.  I then tried plugging in my iPod into a friend's computer with latest version of iTunes and that didn't work either.
To provide a little more background on how I got here, my iPod was acting funky over the past 2 weeks...meaning it would be slow to response, random songs would freeze/not play, and then start playing again, or freeze altogether, then I'de have to reset my iPod by pressing Menu and middle-button...I was planning on restoring it yesterday just to fix its minor issues that at the time were just annoying...but as fate would have it, here I am now...
When I plugged it into my laptop to Restore it yesterday morning, it took a LOOONG time for iTunes to recognize it, then iTunes told me the iPod was corrupt and I should Restore it...well, being an ignorant peion that I am, I instead disconnected it and tried Resetting it again to see what that would do...it then was totally frozen, wouldnt respond to pressing Menu and middle button to Reset iPod, and wouldnt get recognized by iTunes or My Computer when I plugged it in...once the battery died, I was able to charge it up, all the music and files were gone, and I had to select a language...I then plugged it into my Laptop to see what would happen, and per above, here I am now with iTunes no longer able to recognize iPod, but My Computer can, and everything else per above.
I've tried EVERYTHING I can find under the sun to fix / Restore my iPod / get iTunes to recognize it.  Any last-ditch efforts from the Apple Community?  Again, I already exhausted all options I can think of / find, including per link above...http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363?viewlocale=en_US....my hope is mebbe someone else here can provide another option that will magically work or can decipher what my Computer is telling me per above when it fails to Format my iPod.  Otherwise, this iPod is probably now FUBAR...
Hope that makes sense.  Please lemme know any thougts or questions.  you may have.  Thank you for your time.
    Dom

    From the Classic iPod manual.
    To reset iPod classic:
1 Toggle the Hold switch on and off (slide it to HOLD and then back again).
2 Press and hold the Menu and Center buttons for at least 6 seconds, until the
    Apple logo appears.

  • 3G iPod not recognized by iTunes 7

I installed iTunes 7 and now my 3G iPod no longer shows up in iTunes. I'm running WinXP Pro SP2, and my iPod still shows up in Explorer and can be removed with the Safely Remove Hardware wizard. The iPod functions perfectly when removed. I've tried everything in this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716 but the problem still remains. Since the iPod Updater utility has apparently been integrated into iTunes 7, I obviously cannot use the restore option since the iPod does not show up in iTunes 7. Running an older version of the iPod Updater utility results in an "invalid iPod service version" error message and the utility exits, making it impossible to use its restore option. If I connect the iPod to its dock when iTunes 7 is running, iTunes "freezes" for a couple of seconds as if it's detected the iPod, but nothing show sup.

  • IPod not recognized in iTunes/My Computer, almost caushes computer to crash

My 4G iPod (click wheel, 40GB) is not coming up in iTunes when I connect it to my computer (Windows XP). It is also not showing up if I look in My Computer, but it listed under the Device Manager. So I have no way to disconnect it from my computer without detaching it while the Do Not Disconnect screen is up.
Also, when the iPod is connected to my PC, it does everything short of crashing the computer--programs slow down to a screeching halt, I can't open other programs, but when I disconnect it, it's fine.
I have the current version of iTunes running, I've restarted my PC and reset my iPod to the original settings...I'm thinking that I need to restore the iPod, but because it isn't recognized, I can't!
    Any advice?

I've been using the iPod with this PC for over a year now, and the only problems I've had is being unable to eject from iTunes (though doing so from My Computer was fine) from time to time.
Disk Management lists the iPod along with the other USB devices; I don't know the exact wording and I don't want to go through the whole mess right at this moment.

  • BRAND NEW iPod not "recognized" by itunes and "appears to be corrupted"????

I recently purchased an 80gb ipod classic and when I came home to connect it to my computer, itunes opened and the following message appeared:
iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this ipod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod
I just got this, and had never even turned it on, so how can it already be corrupted? I tried disconnecting and then reconnecting the ipod, to no avail. I then restored the ipod, again still message. I even quit iTunes and then reopened it, and still it says the same thing.
Here is a screenshot of what I'm seeing:

Thanks, I ended up getting the newest version of iTunes (I had 7, just not 7.7 or whatever that little insignificant update was) and then tried again. This time, itunes itserlf wouldn't even open because that version of itunes only worked with Mac OS X 10.4.10, and I had 10.4.4
I did a software update for my OS, which I HATE doing because of all the glitches and possible problems associated with updates but restarted the computer.
After doing Opaldad's helpful tip, I connected the ipod and restored it. After that, its working perfectly.
    Thanks for the help
and to anyone who has this in the future, make sure you have the current version of itunes and your OS
Now, just have to wait for my 14 gb of music to upload
