Need to restore full system from wireless TM backup...

Yesterday, my hard drive crashed on my MacBook, took it in, and the helpful folks t the Apple Store quickly replaced it. Now I've been doing regular backups using Time Machine and a USB connected hard drive for several months now. I've restored individual files several times, but this is tyhe first time I need to do a full system restoration.
The problem lies in that the version of Leopard I have a disk for is 10.5... That does not recognize wireless hard drives. The fresh hard disk put in my computer yesterday had 10.5.1, which still does not recognize hard drives. So I had to set up my mac and then try to use Migration Assistant.
Well, Migration Assistant sees my hard drive, but then goes on to tell me "0 Time Machine backups found." I'm getting that sick feeling that I've just lost the better part of a year's worth of data. I know the data on the backup is good (as have as recently as last Saturday used it in Time Machine), but if it cannot be accessed, then it is clearly of no use.
Hooking the disk up USB directly to the computer does not work either...
Can anyone be of assistance?

I would try updating the Macbook to 10.5.3, and install any Time Machine and Airport updates (don't worry about iLife, etc.). Hopefully, your Mac will find the Time Machine drive after updating and you can restore. A note about system restores and Time Machine: after reverting to a previous backup, Time Machine needs to create a whole new backup set, so it will delete a LOT of old backups to make room for a full backup (at least that's what it did on my iMac).

  • Want to restore printing system from Time Machine backup

I reset my printing system and am hoping I can restore all the printer settings I had from my time machine backups on my time capsule. I can't find instructions for doing so. Can anyone provide details?

Thanks for the reply. I read somewhere else to look for com.apple.print as well, and to restore it, but I cannot find this file anywhere on the current hard drive or within Time Machine in any of the many backups. Is it a hidden file? If so, how can I find and view hidden files?
They're not hidden files, but they are system files. You can include them in a Finder search, but you don't need to search for them: just navigate to them.
To get to the contents of <your home folder>/Library/Preferences inside Time Machine:
Open a Finder window, preferably in List mode (in the Menubar, select View then +As List+ ), select your home folder in the sidebar, then +Enter Time Machine.+
Navigate to the backup you want, either by clicking in the "cascade" of Finder windows or the timeline on the right, One of the top-level folders in your home folder is Library. Click on the triangle in front of it, then do the same with the Preferences folder that's inside the Preferences folder.
In there, look for the com.apple.printxxx files.
Select the ones you want (so they're highlighted in blue), then click Restore at the bottom right.

  • Need to restore my comments from a previous backup

    Hi Everyone,
I recently had a problem with my blog and had to scrub everything from my .Me account and my dive (don't ask - it was all about corrupted formatting). In the process I killed all of my comments and I wondered if anyone knew where that folder is kept? Is this also synched when updating so that one has a local copy? I am very curious.

MMe blog comments are kept on MMe servers, you can get to the raw comments by mean of server side javascript. See my post here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7095635&#7095635
If your blog and comments are still intact, I suggest you to leave them alone, start a new blog and link the previous blog in the new blog.
I have way to extract MMe blog comments into HTML files (had done it on several occasions), even that, there is no way of merge the extracted comments into new blog (except manually copy+paste).

  • After formatting my HD and eventually restore my system from a backup on Time Capsule, will I still have access to my old backups as normally used to do via Time Machine?

I have a Time Capsule (4th Gen) and my backups on it, I need to completely erase my hard drive. My question is: after formatting my MacBook HD and eventually restore my system (OS X 10.6.8) from a backup on Time Capsule, will I still have access to my old* backups as normally used to do via Time Machine?
*(-and to the newer backups- if I had not restored my system from the last backup).
    THANKS

That's a good question. Technically, Time Machine should make a new backup but not erase any old backups. But if there isn't sufficient space on the backup drive, then I'm not sure if Time Machine will simply warn you or just go ahead and remove old backups to make room for the new ones.
In any case, the new backup should have a different backup folder on the backup drive. That's my understanding. You can learn more at pondini.org.

  • What cable do I need for a full migration from a 2011 MacBook Pro to a new current one-wireless migration way too slow.?

What cable do I need for a full migration from a 2011 MacBook Pro to a new current one-wireless migration way too slow.?

All you need is an Ethernet cable.
Just plug it into both machines. Don't bother with a crossover cable, just a plain old Ethernet cable will do. The Ethernet ports on the Macs are smart and will adjust appropriately.

  • How do I restore a system from an older time machine backup?

How can I restore my full system from a time machine backup using a "snapshot in time" older than the most recent time machine backup?
For context: I am doing work on my machine that required making a full backup (in time machine), working on the computer, then doing a full restore. Unfortunately, when I briefly connected the my external disk during step 2, time machine started and added a "newer" backup than the one I need to restore. Any advice?
    Thanks!

  • Time Machine Full Recovery From Wireless Backup

I am reporting this as a learning experience for all.
I just had a hard drive fail on my MacBook. Apple Care was golden and now I have a clean install with Leopard.
Here is my situation. MacBook backed up via time machine on a wireless network. Windows on boot camp partition. Dedicated disk (1TB Buffalo) connected to wife's iMac via firewire.
I want to do a full recovery. I start up leopard and it gives me the option to do a full recovery during setup. I have no time machine backup list provided. I continue with setup. When I go to the recover option of time machine I am asked to select a file. This is when I call tech support.
Tech Support says I should have had the backup disk connected directly via firewire for setup to see it. Time machine stores the backup under these conditions as a Sparse bundle. Now that I am past setup I have to do a migration rather than a recovery. I start up the migration assistant and I still cannot access the sparse bundle as it is grayed out. The leap here is you have to mount the sparse bundle, double click, then it shows up as a disk you can migrate from.
Windows Partition, as TS puts it is "on its own".
The confusion for me was that I could not recover exactly as I had backed up.
I hope this helps someone. Cheers!

It seems to be. All music, photos, applications, etc. are present. I have not had time to do a complete review of my migration, I will track this post for a while and report any problems. There were significant OS updates which were required. I thought that they would be included as part of the migrate, not so. Perhaps they are on a true "full recovery" from setup, any one know?
Migration has no option for any part of the OS. It assumes you already have it.
If you recover your entire system from a TM backup (assuming nothing significant was excluded), you get your entire system back exactly the way it was: the OS, Apps, settings, preferences, user data, etc.
You don't load a new OS from the Leopard Install disc -- you only use it for it's copy of Disk Utility and the installer -- everything else comes from your TM backup.

  • Restored system from Time Machine backup disk but the system could not start-up

On MacBook Pro early 2008, restored the entire system from Time Machine backup disk to the entire disk.
The previous system on the backup disk had FileVault turned on.
The restore completed successfully and I was prompted to restart the system via the new restored system disk.
I heard the normal start-up sound, then the Apple logo, but it stuck at the logo screen. And the cooling fan run at almost full speed?
I have been waiting for a few hours, guessing it might FileVault the disk.
Finally I have to shutdown the machine as it stuck at the logo screen forever.
Anyone has the same issue? Any ideas?

BTW, I also tried Repair the system disk, Fix permissions via Disk Utility.
I guess I must lose some files either during the backup or the restore.

  • How to restore file system of the previous backup from OSB using webtool?

    Dear all,
I have some problem regarding to the file system restoration.
For example, I have backed up some files yesterday and today those files have been made change.
So tomorrow I am planning to restore the files from the yesterday backup (the original files before made changes) to other host for testing the data.
Is it possible to do that, since when i restore i can see only the latest ones and search options during restoration are not working well (as date, date range,.....) ?
Your reply to me is very important.
    Thanks and regards,
    Rasmey

There is no recovery partition on drives which haven't had 10.7 or 10.8 installed. You need to use a Mac OS X install DVD to restore the backup.

  • Can I restore my system from install discs when DVD drive is not working?

Can I restore my system from install discs when the DVD drive in my iMac G5 is not working?
There is a disc jammed in the drive and when I try to do an install in Target Firewire mode using a G5 Tower I get an error saying the software cannot be installed on this machine, before I can even select the iMac's drive. I'm using the grey software install discs that came with the iMac.
Is my only option to open up the iMac and get the jammed disc out?
    Thanks

You need to set up the FireWire Target Disk mode installation with the iMac as host, so that it runs its own install disk. The G5 tower should be the target, so that you are "borrowing" only its DVD drive.
Shut down the iMac. Put the iMac install disk into the G5 tower, and reboot the G5 tower into TDM by holding down the T key. Connect the FireWire cable and then restart the iMac while holding down the option key. Hopefully the iMac startup manager will see the install disk that is in the tower; if so then select it and boot from there.

  • I had to restore my system from a time machine backup. It Failed...

I had to restore my system from a time machine backup. It seemed to go alright up to it asking me to resart to complete the installation, but it would not boot. It forced a panic screen that told me to force quit my computer and resart which did not resolve anything.
Now I have installed the original Leopard 10.5 but I used to have 10.6.8 on it. How can I get it back to 10.6.8? or do I have to buy it again?
Any ideas why the restore failed?
    thanks,
    R.

It seems you had a kernel panic (see attached link):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742
Regarding upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6.8), you will have to install the disk you used originally.  If you have lost it, then you will have to get a new one.  The Apple online store sells them for about $29.  When you install Snow  Leopard, you should then do a Software update.
    Ciao.
