Need to restore Music on Ipod back onto PC.

My PC has crashed & I have lost all my music files, luckily all my music is on my Ipod Video. Is it possible for me to export my music from my Ipod back to my PC? I have looked through the user guide and I'm unable to find any details on how to restore music in this way. Any advice or tips would gratefully be received.
Thanks

I found this helpful. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=310452
I also had a computer crash and SharePod was extremely easy to use and I recovered everything.

  • HT1296 How do you put all music on Ipod back onto a previously crashed computer in which the original music files were not able to be restored?

Hi, HOW DO YOU PUT ALL MUSIC FROM IPOD BACK ONTO A PREVIOUSLY CRASHED COMPUTER IN WHIHC ALL MUSIC FILES WERE UNABLE TO BE RESTORED.
My computer crashed a few months ago and my IT guys were not able to restore my music files.. at least I can't find them. When I log into Itunes, all of my music and play lists appear but when I click to play a song in Itunes on computer, it says the files can not be found. My Ipod obviously has all of my music but I'd like to add more (without deleting what I've got on there) and to copy back whats on my Ipod back to my computer. If I plug together and my computer sync then I will loose all music... needing detailed instructions please.

from what i understand, the procecess is similar on both mac and pc, so i'll try help you here. have you set your preferences to "automatically update all"?
    Yes i have.
if this isn't working, maybe try moving one that you are certain is in the correct format, manually. import it from scratch to your itunes, and then copy it to the ipod.
If i click 'import files' the only files it comes up with are text file. Should it be doing this?' So the only files i can import are written documents :/
If i select 'add files' it dosnt add them to my libary at all.
I tryed what you said, i deleted my movies then loaded one into my libary which i no is in the right format but it still said that it is unable to put into my ipod.
Thanks for trying to help by the way :]

  • PC hard disk replaced. How do I get music from iPod back onto PC

My pc hard disk crashed. I replaced it and reinstalled Windows XP. I have lost all the music I had on my laptop. I don't want to reload from CD's again and I don't want to loose the music I downloaded.
Can I get the music from my iPod mini back onto my computer and if so, how?

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    iDump Windows Only
    iRepo Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • How do i get my music from ipod back onto a pc that i have reset?

My Pc recently had some trouble & i had to do an emergency reinstall of windows. As it was emergency i didnt have the possibility of backing up all files before i did it. When i connect my ipod to the pc it tries to sync & tells me that to sync it has to erase the ipod - *** all of my music is on the ipod & not on the pc i dont want to do that but it means i cant synce my ipod. Its the same PC as itunes was originally set up on but becuase of the restore it seems to think its a different PC so wont let me transfer files back onto the pc from the ipod.  Help!!!!

Make sure that autosync is disabled in iTunes/Edit/Preferences/Devices, set up your account, connect your iPod and right click on it in the device list. Choose "transfer purchases" to copy all bought music from iTunes to your new iTunes library.
If you want to use this computer to sync your device, right lick again in the device list and choose "backup"
This will perform a manual backup without the sync process. Set up at least one contact and event on your computer, to be able to merge data after your device got erased during the first sync.
Use the manual backup to restore your data and settings again.
Other music can only be copied if you use 3rd party software, see this thread for examples: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • I just updated my iTunes to the new software. When I plugged it into my computer and it said I need to reset my iPod. I did this and everything on my iPod deleted. Now, it won't let me sync my music or apps back onto my iPod. What do I do?

I just updated my iTunes to the new software. When I plugged it into my computer and it said I need to reset my iPod. I did this and everything on my iPod deleted. Now, it won't let me sync my music or apps back onto my iPod. What do I do?

It doesn't say anything. It runs through the sync process like normal and tells me all of the songs that it's synking. But then when it says I can disconnect it, nothing actually synked.

  • Is there a way to tranfer music from my ipod, back onto my hardrive?

My laptop recently died and i lost all the music off my hardrive, however i still have it all on my ipod. i now have a new PC but im reluctant to connect my ipod up as when it automaticaly updates i will lose it all. Is there any way of getting the music back off my ipod back onto the new hardrive as music files? any help with this matter would be very much apreciated!!
      Windows XP   30GB ipod video

If your iPod is set to update automatically you just need to take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. If it is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it: Managing Your Songs Manually
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Edit>Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.
There is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes

How do I get my music off the iPod back onto my computer after a crash....?
Restore the music form your most recent hard drive backup.
You do make backups of your hard drive, right?
There has to be a way.
There's many ways. If you search the forums, you'll find dozens of solutions. You can use the search box in the upper right portion of the discussions website.
Other wise what's the point of the ** thing.
It's an audio player... not a backup device.
If you rely on your iPod as a backup of your music.. then you are misusing the device. It's not intended to be used in this manner. Apple makes it difficult to get music off the iPod as a method to hinder music piracy.

The iPod backup that iTunes makes does not inlcude synced media like apps and music. Those items should be in your iTunes library.
You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

    Hello cgbuehling
You can, but only the purchases that were made from the iTunes Store. Other content that was imported from a CD or other sources will not transfer over.

    * Need help recovering music on iPod/iTunes *
I bought my iPod 30G when it first came out back in the day. With the protective case it looks like a Walkman, if you know what that is. The new ones are half the thickness of my old skool one. lol!
Anyway, years ago I accidently uploaded a virus in both my PC and laptop. Yeah, real *******. Well, the person who restored my computers couldn't save my music. I still have the iPod but my library on iTunes is gone. If I try to update my iPod in either computer it will erase every song I have on it and only upload the songs/album I'm trying to add. I'm told that this is something Apple did to prevent file sharing, blah, blah, blah...
Does anyone know a way around it? I keep buying CDs just not able to load them into my iPod thru iTunes.

    Hello yourantihero,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

  • My Computer crashed-how do i put songs from iPod back onto computer?

my computer crashed a while back and i lost everything. my iPod still has my songs but i'm not sure how i can (or if i can) get them back onto my computer!!! do i need to reinstall the iTunes CD? please help!!! thanks!!!!
    20GB iPod   Windows XP

If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • Can i transfer music from ipod back to pc after hard drive scrubbed?

i have a lot of music loaded. but our hard drive was scrubbed and the library from which this music came was erased.
i re-installed itunes, and at first looked for a way to transfer the music from the ipod back onto the computer.
couldn't figure that out. then tried loading a new cd into itunes so that it could be added to ipod. the software displayed this message:
The ipod "Kim Smith's (my wife)ipod" is linked to another itunes music library. do you want to change the link to this itunes music library & REPLACE ALL EXISTING SONGS & PLAYLISTS ON THIS IPOD WITH THOSE FROM THIS LIBRARY? (my caps.)
I assume that yes means that the 200 or so albums currently on the ipod would be erased and replaced by the one album i tried to upload.
i need a way to add new music to that which is already on the ipod, and to transfer those 200 albums on to the computer so that i can delete the christina aguilera album that my wife snuck on to the ipod.
has anyone had a similar experience?
    thx for any help here.

Do not click "yes". (Assuming Windows) Connect your iPod to your computer, and go into My Computer where it should appear as a disk. Enable hidden files if not already enabled. Open the grayed-out folder "iPod_Control" and then its subdirectory "Music". Your songs shouuld be in the "F##" folders. Just copy them to your computer. Alternatively, use a third party application like Yamipod. Once the files are on your computer, add them to your iPod library, and then you can click "yes" on that message. It should transfer all your songs to the iPod.
