Need to run 3 DVI Displays from my Mac Pro

Hello,
I have a 30 inch Display (the first gen, with the DVI connector), an old 23 inch Cinema Display (easel stand), and a 17 inch flat screen display (easel stand). I'd like to hook up all 3 to a Mac Pro. Does anyone have an idea of what graphic cards I might need to do this? I'm currently running all 3 displays on my G5, but I assume those graphic cards won't work in a Mac Pro. Thanks very much.

Well, I guess, you’re talking about one of the the 2009 Quad-Core Mac Pro’s...?
This one comes with the NVIDIA GT 120... (One Mini Display Port / One DVI Port...)
The same applies to the ATI Radeon HD 4870... BTO option...
To connect a 17-, 20- or 23-inch Display to one of the Mini Display Ports you might need the
“Mini Display Port to DVI Adapter”:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU1NTE
To connect a 30-inch Display to one of the Mini Display Ports you might need the
“Mini Display Port to Dual-Link DVI Adapter”:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU1ODY
Otherwise use the EVGA GTX 285 Mac Edition...
This one comes with “Two Dual-Link DVI Ports...
In any case, one needs Two Graphic Cards to connect Three or Four Displays...
Be aware, one can install either the HD 4870 or GTX 285, both have Two auxiliary power cables...
The GT 120 doesn't have those cables...

  • Need to extend my DVI cable from my Mac pro to my Apple 23" cinema display

I need to extend my existing DVI cable to the maximum allowed distance (without using a repeater) of 3m or 15'. This means I need a 12 foot extension cable Male to Female. I don't need to extend the USB or Firewire ports.
I've searched the threads and seen discussions but am interested in feedback from someone who has actually done the extension and is happy with the outcome.
I understand that the 23" monitor can use a single link cable and that the interface is DVI-I. Anyone tried this?
    Many thanks for the help!!
    Mac Pro, 2.66GHz, 4GB mem, 2TB storage   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The graphics board has a DVI-I port, but since the Apple display only uses the digital signals, you can use a digital only cable, which might be a bit cheaper. Take a look at the female connector on the cable, though. Make sure it has holes for all the pins on the display's plug. The plug may have the analog pins, even though it doesn't use them.

  • Extending my desktop across 2 (DVI) displays from 15" MacBook Pro Retina

Hi. I bought a new 15" MacBook Pro Retina a few days ago and am trying to connect 2 Dell displays with a view to extending my desktop across them both. At the Apple shop I was told I simply needed to buy 2 Thunderbolt to DVI converters (my 2 displays both have DVI out) and hook them up... Not true. If I try this my desktop only extended across 1 display. The other display isn't even picked up by my MacBook Pro.
So does anyone out there know how I connect 2 DVI displays to my MacBook Pro without buying a Matrox Dual Link? If I bought an HDMI to DVI converter cable and connected one display via the HDMI port, and the other display via the thunderbolt port, would this work?

May not be an upgrade issue ..
You have a fast processor. and 8GB of RAM is more than sufficient.  (The processor cannot be replaced)
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space. Less can slow the system down.
If your Mac seems to running slower, try the suggestions here > Mac troubleshooting: What to do when your computer is too slow | Macworld
If you have not done so, especially with school files stored on the hard drive, make sure to back up your important data on a timely basis.  Help here >  Mac Basics: Time Machine
Not a good idea to post the serial number of your Mac on the net. I have asked the moderators to edit that information for you. It has nothing to do with upgrading.

  • Running two Apple displays from one Macbook Pro?

I have two Apple displays with mini-display ports.  I have ONE Macbook Pro with ONE mini-display port.  Problem.
I purchased this USB 2.0 to DVI Display Adapter from Monoprice but still can't figure out how to get my mini-display ports to work with this.
Is this even the right product?

You can use another DVI, VGA, or even HDMI display for far cheaper with this adapter, US$60 plus shipping:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/VIDU2DVIA/
Warning: Results may be unacceptably laggy.
But a converter to Mini DisplayPort is quite expensive, US$150 plus shipping:

Do I need to run and anti virus program with MAC OSX Lion? Have heard different opinions!
You will continue to hear different opinions here, where thoughts range everywhere between "anti-virus software is the evil spawn of Satan" to "anyone not running anti-virus software is a fool."
Truth is, this is still a very personal decision on a Mac. Depending on circumstances, it is still very easily possible to stay safe without using anti-virus software, but circumstances and personal preferences vary widely. Besides which, anti-virus software cannot even remotely provide you a guarantee of protection!
To learn how to stay safe (with or without anti-virus software), and how to decide whether to use anti-virus software, see my Mac Malware Guide.

Yes the original Install Discs can be replaced for a nominal fee. Call AppleCare, you will need a credit card and the serial number of the machine. You can use the AppleCare Contact Info for the phone number on your part of the planet.

  • I need a 1TB SATA HD for my 2008 mac pro - recommendations?

I am running out of space on my mac pro and want to add in 1TB.  There were apple 1TB HDs in the mac store that were compatable with my 2008 mac pro not so long ago, but in my lackluster approach I have returned to buy one and they are no longher listed in the store.  Are they still avaliable and if not can anyone recomend an alternative.  I've not got the buget to go solid state for the whole TB so looking for old school HDs.
Thanks guys, this forum has helped me consistantly throught the last 6 years!

Never buy a HDD from Apple. Amazon or Newegg or any place has more and better price and options.
You have 4 drive bays, don't put anything on the boot drive except the system (and apps)
    Buy yourself a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD $144
Move all the media and data to a 1-2TB WD Black
(Use your existing drive now as backup)
500GB SSD are now $299 but you only need about $82 for 128GB
I would never use a HDD for the system  And your 3,1 never felt or ran so well as it will
    System / media / backup / scratch / user
You can even put a drive, esp SSD's, in the lower optical drive bay.

  • Can I install the ddr2 pc5300 memory from my Mac Pro 1,1 in a Mac Pro 3,1 that requires ddr2 pc6400?

I have replaced a Mac Pro 1,1 with a used Mac Pro 3,1. I am trying to canibalize as much as I can. Will the slower RAM from the 1,1 work in the 3,1? Dare I just stick it in and try, or might I cause damage?

I don't quite understand. I do plan to try installing the old ddr2 pc5300 667 from my Mac Pro 1,1 into my Mac Pro 3,1 one pair at a time, just to confirm each pair is in working order and happy in its new home. I have 8x2 GB of RAM I hope to move.
I am uncertain what you have said from there. Yes, the cost would be cheap, free in fact! Is this what you meant? You had suggested buying 667 from Amazon, or similar -- but I don't need. And you have made the point that 8 DIMMs is beneficial--which I will have covered. (great tip)
I think what I am most uncertain about is the comment about what will run cooler. Maybe you mean if I purchased newer memory, the design has become more efficient, so the expense is worth considering?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Monitor displays wallpaper after mac pro powered down

since I replaced my MBP with a new Mac Pro, after I shut down, my wallpaper is still displayed on my display (HP 2335).
I can even disconnect the DVI from my mac pro, and it is still displayed. I've never seen anything like this.
    Any ideas?

Similar thing happens to me. I'm suspicious that the other 2 times I have heard of it (including your account), it has been the combo of an early 2008 Mac Pro and an HP L2335, which is what I have.
I don't have a fix - just find it slightly annoying.
