Need to run XP programs w/ Windows 8

Hi all, I just picked up a new Toshiba L855D-s5117 running Windows 8. Besides getting use to the "new" Windows 8 software, I have several rather expensive programs that run on Win XP, but wont run on Windows 8.  A friend suggested that I partition the hard drive and install WIndows XP along with those programs in the partition or run an external drive with XP and the programs. Is either of these a viable option and would one be better than the other?  Is there anywhere where I could get guidance to do this?
Thanks in advance.

Your best bet is to run Windows XP in a virtual machine. I recommend that you upgrade Windows 8 to the Pro version and use its virtual machine, Hyper-V.
I have installed Windows 7 in Hyper-V and it works just fine. See my message about that.
Greg Shultz explains the process here (and you can google for many more descriptions).

  • Running My Program From Windows?

    Hi, now that I'm done with my program, is there any
    way that I can run the program from windows by
    creating a shortcut? I would like the program to run
    on other machines without having to start or install
    the JDK.First, the other machines do not need the JDK - they need the JRE which is much smaller. Second, your question is a variant of the most asked question on this forum. Try searching for "exe" or "executable" or something similar and you will find lots of answers.
    Quickly I can tell you that if your program use any GUI (ie AWT/Swing), there is no way you can avoid having the JRE on the target machines. You can, however, make installation programs that install the JRE along with you program if you wish.

  • Running java program at windows startup

    I need to run java program at startup and then it will continue to run in its own thread.
    Any body having idea how to do that programmatically?
    Zeeshan

    This is one option but this is not feasible in my scenario as this application will be running over a network which involves hundreds of computer so is there any way to do it programatically?
    I mean if I can load java class file through an exe file then I can load my class file in the startup using C++.
    Any Suggestions.
    thanks for the help

  • How much disk space is needed to run Boot Camp using Windows XP?

    How much disk space is needed to run Boot Camp using Windows XP?

    But you can't install XP if you have a new Mac.
    Try running XP in a VM or aquire Windows 7 which is the only one supported now.
    And you will need more like 60GB for Windows 7, so I would skip on 20GB just to be safe.
    20G is a fine minimum for XP, I was not responding to any inquiry about Win 7.

  • I want to run java program on windows environment as background process

    Hi all
    I want to run java program on windows environment as background processSo command prompt return after executing java command and program on background In Linux we can do this easily but I do not how to do this in windows
    for example look this programe
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class TestClass {
         class ravi extends Thread{
              public void run(){
                   try {
                        String target_file = "ravind.txt";
                        File targetfile = new File(target_file);
                        PrintWriter writer = new PrintWriter(new FileWriter(targetfile)) ;
                   for (int i =0 ; i < 100 ;i++ ){
                        Thread.sleep(10000);
                        writer.println(" ravindra shukla ");
              } catch (Exception e) {
                             e.printStackTrace();
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              TestClass test1 = new TestClass();
              TestClass.ravi r1 = test1.new ravi();
              r1.start();
    System.out.println(" return from main ");
    first i compile this
    javac TestClass.java
    then i run this by using this command
    java TestClass
    but becouse i put sleep on threads run function so it takes to much time to get return on command promt .... i want to run this programe as background process so command promt return as soon as i execute java command

    Thanks dude
    This solution start java TestClass works fine . But it does not solve my problem
    It opens another black window and that black window persist till the life time of my program
    Is it possible application run on complete background without opening another black window as in Linux

  • Run Labview program on Windows 7 Ultimate

    Has anyone run labview program (built application) on Windows 7 Ultimate? Is there any issues? I'm trying to define the system requirement for my application installation and run time. Windows 7 Ultimate was required by my coworker for another application and I want to make sure this requirement won't affect my labview application.
    Thanks very much!

    I'm sorry to say you're screwed, it only works on W7 Home Premium.
    Nah! Just kidding, from a programming point there's no noticable difference between the different W7 versions.

  • Need to run a program that requires windows... do not want to buy windows!

    We have been very happy Mac users for years now- recently I purchased some school software for my son (Switched on Schoolhouse) and it only runs in a Windows environment! I am so disappointed with this, but on further investigation saw that I could run windows ( I do NOT want to resort to this) just to run this ONE program!
    I saw somewhere that there are emulators out there that allow you to run this software on a mac without needing to install windows at all- they failed to mention which one they were using and I am very inexperienced about this and would love if somebody could point me in the right direction!

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
    I concur with the recommendation of Crossover.
    A fairly new addition is Macindows http://www.pioneeringsoftware.co.uk/pages/products
    Since both offer time-limited trial versions, maybe try them for yourself to see which one better fits your needs.

  • Running intensive programs on windows

    can i get some feedback from macbook pro users who use windows solely or through bootcamp? personal experience. i want to use windows very intensively on a macbook pro, through bootcamp. i want both os's. i'm wondering how the systems and hardware respond to intensive windows use, cubase, reason, VSL, video/photo editing done in windows. is there a performance difference? or does it just load up windows as if it's the native os?
    thanks alot!
    and please, no fanboy **.
    edit: for the curious, i own tens of thousands of dollars worth of pro audio software for pc, i'm thinking of making the change to mac very very slowly and am considering a macbook as my main laptop.

    I run Bootcamp on a Macbook Pro with XP Pro. I have been using Macs for years and personally I don't agree that hardware or build is any more reliable than a well built PC. I've known a lot of Mac friends who have had hardware trouble and have had to pay a lot of money to get it fixed. Even on a Macbook Pro the DVD drive will die pretty quick if used often just like any average PC drive. Its a personal choice to use a Mac.
    I've tested Bootcamp for video and audio editing. Not with Cubase unfortunately. I've used Wavelab and Pro Tools with Mbox. There are USB issues. There are trackpad and mouse issues. Also Bootcamp freezes up in short 20-30s bursts and a horrible noise comes out of the speakers which will effect your audio work. This crash seems to be random but occurs at least once every 10min. The computer or software appears to continue to run in the background you just lose the ability to use the trackpad or keyboard whilst this occurs. Whilst editing I've lost the external drive I use for my video and audio. There appears to be a USB issue. Not a 100% sure but I suspect Bootcamp played a part in this drive dying and I am currently trying to recover lost video files.
    Apple does not give any real support for Bootcamp. I've read claims that Bootcamp with Windows 7 is stable but I take these as claims until I see any real evidence. I've had to mod the latest nvidia drivers because the ones on the latest version of Bootcamp are still too old. I don't recommend Bootcamp for anything in its current unsupported state. There are issues which stretch back years that have never been completely solved. If you want to run windows then keep your PC.
    I prefer using my Mac for design work or have to use it if I want to edit on Final Cut Pro. I'm currently experimenting with the idea of trying to get Mac OS to run stably on a PC. If anyone figures out the answer I am tempted to switch to PC.
    Lately Apple has started to bug me with hardware and software reliability issues. It seems to be getting worse the more people buy Macs and this rush to buy Macs might end up being a Fad too far for some.

  • Witch specifikation will i need to run AutoCad via bootcamp (Window version)

    In order to run AutoCad on a Macbook Pro via bootcamp, what kind of specification will i need ???
    I´m thinking about the 17 inch Macbook Pro.
    About processors i have to choises, either the 2,2 with 6 mb L3 and turbo-boost up to 3,4 or
    the 2,3 with 8 mb L3 and turbo-boost up to 3,6
    Next there is Ram, how much will i need ??? Again i have to options, eigther 4 or 8
    I´m going to study next month and i haven´t woorked with AutoCad before, however i wan´t a system running perfektly and completely without any problems what so ever.
    Now it would be pretty ekspensive for me to upgrade, so i´ll only do it, if i really have to, in order to get that perfektly running system.
    What do you say ?, Have an idea ?

    Yes, but I am inclined to agree with user Templeton Peck - I prefer Boot Camp.  Otherwise I was MAX OUT the ram upgrade.  And isn't it FRUSTRATING how expensive the new AutoCAD by Autodesk for MAC is?!?!  It's twice the price of a new MAC!  NUTS!  I did give the free trail a go & have to say that I like it....but not when I've already paid for a PC copy!  Frustrating, just frustrating...
    BTW - recently upgraded to the i7 15"MBP w/ Thunderbolt.  LOOOOVE it!  Can't wait to see what Thunderbolt technology will bring...glad I waited.
    Cheers!

  • Advanced Excel user needing help running VBA program in Numbers 09

    I am preparing for Dental school, a very tough program, indeed, and wanted to use a powerful tool that helped me out in my undergrad:
    I have developed a Visual Basic program in Excel which gives the user a few simple forms through which I can enter data (terms and definitions, or possible test information) and then take short tests, play a silly game, print flash cards and so on.
    I worked very hard to get this going on Office 2007 - very VERY hard given Office 07 is the most evil creation ever!!
    I may resort to running gulp Vista to get this running, but what a pain! I am aware that Applescript is an option, but would hope there is some compatibility with my previous work. The more code I can preserve from my previous program the less time I will have to invest in developing the Mac version.
    This is a highly advanced thing to do, and I realize most people don't do this sort of thing. If anyone is as crazy (and geeky) as me your help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Where are you finding Applescript 3.2.1 ?
    As far as I know, the current AppleScript is 2.1.2 and is part of mac Os X 10.6.
    Office for mac is unable to use VBA.
    Numbers is unable to take benefit of this missing VBA.
    AppleScript may be used to mimic some VBA features.
    Look at :
    http://mactech.com/vba-transition-guide/index-091.html
    In fact, I guess that you grabbed Xcode 3.2.1 hoping to be able to build AppleScript applications.
    This require a serious learning curve.
    Look at :

  • How much RAM do I need to run windows through paralells sucessfully/smoothly?

    I have a MacBook with 2 gb of memory and need to run a program for school that is only available through windows. The program requires 128 mb ram to run. What would be the system requirements necessary to run windows through paralells and then this program on top of it. Do I have what it takes? or is my MacBook able to be upgraded to meet those requirements?

    You didn't mention which version of Windows the program requires, or which MacBook Pro model you have.
    I have successfully run Windows Microsoft Office 2010 and other older Windows applications under both XP and WIndows 7 with Parallels 5 in 2Gb of total RAM on my mid 2007 MacBook 2,1 with integrated GMA 950 video on both Mac OS X 10.5.8 'Leopard' (though Win 7 is not 'officially supported') and 10.6.6 'Snow Leopard'
    But performance is, uh, 'limited', especially for processor-intensive applications like graphics programs.
    My Core2Duo 2.16Ghz processor often runs at 100% of one processor, so the fan is often running at high speed all the time Windows is running. It is still possible to run Mac applications like Mail and Safari at the same time.
    Since I upgraded to 4Gb RAM (although by design, my Mac 2,1 system only recognizes 3Gb) Windows 7 runs a bit better, though still at a slower speed than the same program with Windows 7 under Boot Camp where it has access to the full 3Gb.
    I do own a copy of Parallels 6, purported to provide some performance gains, but I have not yet installed it, because I doubt that my current configuration will provide enough performance gains to warrant the time and trouble to install Parallels 6 and then have to once again deal with Microsoft Support over yet another 'reinstallation' of my perfectly legitimate, legal copy of Windows 7 Home Premium.
    If you don't need simultaneous access to both Windows and Mac applications, Boot Camp will likely give you adequate performance with XP in 2Gb.  RAM memory upgrades are certainly available from Apple and reliable vendors such as Other World Computing (www.macsales.com) where I've purchased several of my RAM and hard drive upgrades for a MacBook and a MacBook Pro.

    I have windows running on my mac laptop, i want to install parrells as i need to run some specialist software - how do i do this?

    You mean you don't want to dual boot to run the program in Windows?
    Have you looked in the Boot Camp forum? you can run the software already natively in Windows. Parallels just lets you run Windows under or side by side with Mac OS (sharing memory and processing resources).
    Parallels of course uses the SAME Windows partition you already have (usually, unless you want to buy and install a 2nd copy of Windows and create a VM).
