Need to save streaming video - what to do?

My apologies if this is the wrong forum, but I didn't know where to go...
There is a 30-second streaming video clip on the web that I would like to save/download for a legal promotional personal use.
Is there any macintosh software I can use to "grab" this file? I've read the source page as best I can, but it always leads to a non-linkable windows media file
Fast help would be appreciated. The file will only be only for a week.

Snapz Pro X 2 with Movies will allow you to capture the video off the screen as it is played back. Not cheap: US$69 but it works superbly and is well-documented.
You can investigate other solutions by searching MacUpdate or Version Tracker. The user-submitted reviews accompanying the listings can be helpful in sorting the wheat from the chaff.

1) Screen Capture -- Any streaming video that can be watched/listened to can be captured. Several applications are available that can do this but I generally prefer SnapzProX. This class of program essentially allows you to "record" the audio and video as it is being played back on your computer. This is normally done using a very simple but very fast codecs which create rather large files on your computer but which can then be transcoded to a more efficient format for playback whenever you wish.
ADVANTAGES: You end up with a fully self-contained copy of the media which can be locally archived, moved, copied, and is available as long as you keep the copy.
DISADVANTAGES: This approach can require large amounts of storage space depending on the commpression format used and the number of files stored. Depending on the material involved, this could constitute a copyright violation of media use.
2) Save As... -- If you have/purchase QT Pro and/or an appropriate third-party QT component (like Flip4Mac in this case), you open open/play the streaming file in the QT Pro Player and save a copy of the movie that contains a resource pointer to the online streaming server. For all intents, you have a "copy" of the file stored on your computer that can, within certain limits, be played back whenever you wish.
ADVANTAGES: Since the saved movies are very small, you can save a large number of them on your computer. Since they open and play just like standalone movies, they are very easy to use and share. Since control of the content remains with the orginator and access (public or limited) remains as intended by the originator, you would not be violating copyrights here.
DISADVANTAGES: Material may be changed, removed, or unavailable for one reason or another at any given time. Playback requires connection to the Internet.
3) Bookmark/URL List -- As a last resort, you can always bookmark or copy the relavent streaming server URL to a "hyperlink" list and open the media manually whenever you wish/are able to do so.
ADVANTAGES: Nothing to buy.
DISADVANTAGES: Requires extra effort on your part, still won't open in the QT Player, and still remains subject to the online vagaries mentioned above.

You have to import the video to your computer by connecting the iPad with cable and then using iPhoto if you have a Mac or Windows Explorer or any other camera application that will import photos and videos. Read this for instructions.

Make sure that you backup and sync with iTunes as well, if You have never synced with iTunes before, it might just be easier for you to backup with iCloud. You can restore from the backup when you get the replacement iPad.

I need help with streaming video

I have 7 videos I've produced that I would like to
progressively stream from my web site. They're all approx 400 x 200
about 2 minutes long with sound. I have a scene set up with each
video in a separate keyframe so you can navigate from one to the
other in the same scene.
I can get the videos to play locally. When I upload the swf
and .flvs to my server, they won't play. One error message I get on
output states that "**Warning** The linkage identifier
'FLVPlayback' was already assigned to the symbol 'FLVPlayback', and
cannot be assigned to the symbol 'golden', since linkage
identifiers must be unique." What I did there is rename each video
in my library from FLVPlayback to a unique name so I can identify
it.
I get that output error message for each of the videos that
I'm trying to publish. It sounds like I have to change the
Identifier in each video, but I haven't figured out how to do that.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Ah, I see what happened. Every time I import a QT into the
library, Flash creates a FLVPlayback component along with a .flv
file. I cleared all but one FLVPlayback component and reimported
the .flvs to stage and now I have streaming video on the website.

One more issue. I've selected one of the prebuilt skins
(Clearexternalplayseekmute.swf) to control video, while it works
locally, I can't see it on the server. Do the skins need additional
code to work?

Record Streaming Video from Computer

I need to "capture" streaming video that plays on a computer.
I can't seperate out the file, just need to record as it plays. If
Captivate can't do it, does anyone know of another program that
can?

I have had this problem with TechSmith's software as well.
Try turning off video hardware acceleration.
Also, make sure you don't move anything once you've begun.
Oddly, even screen recordings made with TechSmith's Morae recording .NET 3 applicaitons can lose the content and present a black screen.
Here's the drill:
    Record a software interaction.
    Edit and export video. (If you move the editing window, the recorded image seems to stay where it was, but becomes invisible. Sort of like sliding a cropping guide off a picture and onto a table.)
    Launch video player and play recording
    Move video player.
    Recording disappears until you put player back where it was.
I've had similar problems with Camtasia and SnagIt.

Quicktime Pro will do full screen streaming videos that are compatible with Quicktime installed Codecs. If the video of the Olympics on the website has a specific URL to go straight to the video, then yes, you can call upon it with Quicktime Pro's player and then watch it fullscreen.
If the video of the Olympics was embedded such a way that you can't find the direct link to the video, then the limitation is how the webpage is designed. Thanks to Flip4Mac, there is now also a Windows Media codec you can install for Quicktime as well:

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution. We can't see your computer so we need to know some details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what fixes have you tried?
where is you library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

Video Stream Protection, what version to buy

Hi All!
I need to stream video files but verify that the user
requesting the video has been approved to access it.
My idea is to use some sort of signature based authentication
(ie: that the url passed to the media server has some data that the
server can then look at and verify validity to allow access to the
videos).
By reading at the docs, for some reason I get the feeling
this can't be done in the Flash Media Streaming server, and that I
need to use the Interactive edition. Is this correct?
Is there other sort of built in authentication that I should
use instead with the FMS server?
I'm trying to find out so that I know for sure what product I
need to buy.

Thanks for the reply Graeme! Although I could write a servlet
to do the authentication and pass the stream to the client from it,
that seems to me, defeating the purpose of having the streaming
server, since i could just as well get the files from the
filesystem... (unless I'm missing other advantages)

I need advice on creating streaming video applications in FMIS

Hello all,
I have gone through Tom Green's helpful tutorials on streaming from the vod folder (FMS Developer) and using his application to stream from the applications folder (FMIS).
What I need to know now, is what to do to create a player for use on my video page. Just when I think I have this figured out a little more, I end up stymied.
For example, I just downloaded and read through the 22-page intro to the RealEyes REOPS player. This isn't the first time I have researched this player, but every time I start reading up on it, it feels as though it's making sense, then the treatment drifts straight into software engineer-speak and I'm left thinking this will be impossible to grasp.
I researched Strobe. Yet another exceedingly-difficult bit of information to understand when you're a beginner. Ultimately leaving me staring at the screen wondering what I just read.
I have a full, licensed copy of FMIS running on my web server and I want to stream video from it. I really don't care if the player is flashy or not...I want the viewer to enjoy the video, that's what is important. I don't need closed captioning, I just want a full-screen capable player. Something basic that will play SH and h.264 clips. If one player can't be made to do both, I'll need one for each.
I'm self-taught PHP and database design, self-taught web designer, I have tackled big projects before and I am undaunted by this one...I JUST need some idea where to go.
For instance, when forst prompted to read Tom Green's tutorials, they made no sense to me. It took helpful posts from all of you on this forum to get me to the 'aha!' moments that allowed me to appreciate Tom's tutorials. I need that 'aha!' with regards to buildign applications. The one Tom uses in his Part 3, Beginner's guide to using ActionScript 3.0 with Flash Media Server 3.5 tutorial is cool, but it's not a player. I know enough to change the RTMP path and video filename to make this thing stream my files from my server, but there's another gap in what I want to do and what I need to know to head in that direction.
Any and all input will be absolutely appreciated.

Really need Help! - Java Video Streaming

Hi,
I bought a 'Creative' web-cam today and I want to be able to display real-time video in a Java applet. Could someone please help me to do this.
What classes do I need to capture the video, and use a server to either broadcast or stream the video to a client( applet ).
I have JMF 1.2.1 installed with jdk1.3.1
I'm kindof new to Java and really need to know where to start.

What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running on?
What are the properties of the media that you have on the Timeline and what is the project preset?
In the absence of details such as that, I would generalize and suggest that, if applicable for your version, look at
sharing opportunities under ...Computer/AVCHD and the presets there which are applicable to your situation.
And, be aware that you can change those settings, if necessary, under the Advanced Button of the preset
selected.

LIVE Streaming Video-Equipment and Cables Needed?????

I am planning on starting a 24/7 live online tv station through ustream or livestream. I will be using my apple Macbook Pro to do this. However, I would like to be able to play DVD's, and other recordings from a DVD player through a video switch board/video mixer into my computer and into ustream. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what equipment I am going to need to do this. I already have everything to produce my shows. I just need to know what kind of video switch board/video mixer I will need and what connection cables I will need to run the video mixer to my Macbook Pro. If there is a better way to do this, I am open to suggestions. I am on a tight budget, but am willing to spend some money. Please keep in mind that I would like this station to be a 24/7 programming station on ustream or livestream and that I need to be able to set video up to run on an automated schedule. on FMS and let the other clients play it. In a few steps:

If you're using Flex2 and FMS2 (the latest FMS is 3), you
might need to
cuange the connection encoding to AMF0 (which is what FMS2
uses) in order for this to work.
Hope this helps; I've written it from my head so it probably
has mistakes, but it's the general workflow; the docs in the
language reference for specific functions mentioned here will also
help.
