Need to setup a POP account
I just upgraded my MacBook Pro(2009) to the iMac Retina.
I just can't seem to be able to setup a POP email account on my new computer. Even when I select "other email accounts" it creates an IMAP account and then I can't change the incoming mail server. That doesn't seem to be important because I can receive emails.
The problem is that I can't send emails. My ISP is only providing detailed setup information for a POP account.
Any suggestion?

When you select Other Email Account, you must hold down the Option key (possibly labeled “alt) before clicking the Create button. It will change to Next instead. Then, you can set up the account manually.

I bought my first mac and the Apple Mail successfully set up my gmail account and I was able to manually set up a separate IMAP account in Apple Mail. But when Apple Mail set up my hotmail account, it told me that the user/password aren't verified and won't work. Sure enough, the hotmail account always shows as offline, and when I try to take all accounts online, I am prompted for my hotmail password, which is then rejected. I am able to access my hotmail account via Safari using the same user/password, so I know the user name and password are correct. And I checked the POP server, port and ssl settings in the non-working hotmail account that Apple Mail set up, and they are the same ones recommended by hotmail. I tried your suggestion of setting up a new user on my mac and trying to set up the hotmail account in that new user's Mail account, and I had the exact same problem. Help!

I use entourage for my work POP account which is the same account I have also setup at home (but just with a different smtp).
I'm trying to set up the account on my iphone and it keeps telling me that the POP verification failed OR that the smtp verification failed. I have no clue what I am doing wrong.

Unable to create POP account on blackberry phones
Hi,
We have been struggling now for a month to simply setup a pop account on our blackberry phones.
We go to the email setup wizard and straight away it is asking for a username and password, we enter our email address for username and password of the email account for password, we click next and then it displays a message to enter the username, it keeps displaying this on both of our phones.
We have hotmail and yahoo accounts already setup on our phones, these were setup with no problems at all.
Also we have been able to setup pop accounts in the past with no problems.
We are unsure on what we need to do now in order to get this setup correctly.
I have followed these steps to try and resolve this but we dont seem to get the same pages pop up, we dont get no message to agree to any terms and conditions, just the option to enter username and password which does not work, like on step 4 of the below webpage.

You are being asked for a USERNAME where it fails, right?
Is this the initial first screen you see after you click on the BlackBerry's email setup icon?
I suspect it is asking for your BIS data account username and password.
Or the BlackBerryID username and password.

Is there anyway to setup a POP account on the iPhone to send only? I do not want to pull my POP mail to the phone but I do want to be able to send mail using the account.
In a word, no.
After creating an email account, you can disable the account on the iPhone without deleting the account, which prevents the mailboxes for the account from being available, but also prevents receiving or sending message with the account. -
Pop account randomly refuses connection
We setup a pop account that is used on multiple conputers at the same time. Now one computer gets randenly the message connection refused enter password.
Password in keychain is correct. Login settings are correct. User also uses à imap account and there are no problems with that.
Log is not helpfull.POP3 is not suited for multiple connections. You cannot connect from multiple computers at the same time. It will take 10 minutes to time out and accept new connections.
You should use IMAP. -
In the new mail app for OSX v10.7 Lion it seems I can only setup my gmail account as an "imap", when I need to set it up as "pop"... PLZ HELP I NEED MY MAIL TO WORK!!!

Then select Other
Then select "Add a Mail Account and click create
Then go to google for the settings you need:

I am trying to setup a secondary e-mail account which is a POP account. However, when I try to setup the new account, Mail detects it as an iMAP account. Once Mail sets it up as an iMAP account it doesn't work. I cannot figure out how to override the automatic setup and manually configure it as a POP account.
Yeah, silly as it seems, OSX is trying to do too much for us, not on 10.8 to test, but try this...

I'm not sure why you would want POP over IMAP. When IMAP is so much more versatile.

Anyways if it works like 10.7 Mail. When adding the account trick it. Do this by just entering some fake email address and password into the boxes and click continue. It will then say it could not find the correct settings, click continue. Now you will be given the option to enter everything manually.
Now you can choose POP and manually enter the POP and SMTP settings for Yahoo. Which I believe are pop.mail.yahoo.com, Port 995, SSL and smtp.mail.yahoo.com, port 465, SSL, authentication required. Enter your correct email address now.
Once added go back to your accounts list and edit it to make sure that it now lists your correct yahoo address and not the fake address in all areas.
Note: Be sure when entering the fake email address to not use a major provider it likely knows. So don't choose @gmail, @hotmail, &c instead use something like @weevilfarts.com.

They run a BES server onsite for the Exchange account.

Most BES-level service plans (from the carrier) include some number of BIS accounts as well. The first thing, IMO, to set up is the BES account...get that activated first (the BES admins will know how) and allow it to fully synchronize. Then work on the BIS accounts...see this guide:

I have a POP account but need IMAP
Hello,
My ISP only offers POP accounts. Because I have a tower and a laptop I really want the emails to be in sync. After researching I realize I need IMAP and .Mac.
I dont think I can switch from my ISP yet. Our website it quite big and we still have 2 years paid up with them.
Any suggestions? Would some sort of fowarding work or would it be slower? Also I really need to keep my email address(es) the same.
Thanks a lot for any advice.Why not forward the messages to a web mail account like Yahoo or GMail?

Do we need to enter full email address in Incoming mail server settings on POP Account or just the username? For example does it have to be [email protected] or only jim.nicholas works? How does it affect the way the emails are delivered between laptop (primary device) and ipad ???

Mail crashed the Mac (Kernel Panic) and I restarted. Mail then said it was damaged and to quit. I did. I relaunched and mail rebuilt the messages. But it left all 9 of my POP accounts out. I see no way to add them back except the tedious process of re-entering each one.

Can anyone tell me how to get Mail to recognize the previous account setup?Can you go to homefolder/library/mail, and in that mail folder, what do you see? a folder for each of your pop accounts by any chance?
Do you have time machine on by any chance? If so then you could search just before the crash and locate the homefolder/library/preferences and looking for the file com.apple.mail.plist, and copying that file to your homefolder/library/preferences on your mac.
else you may have to manually re-enter each account
