Need to start over, how do I clear the music in iTunes but keep books, apps

The external drive I connect to my laptop changes designation (E:to F: to E: to G: etc.) every time I plug it in and now I have two copies of everything.
What I would like to do, first, is wipe out all the songs in my iTunes library. That is music only, apps, books etc are stored locally on the laptop, the music and music only is on the external hard drive.
Then I want to figure out how to keep my external hard drive at the same drive letter and re-add my music from said drive.
If anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! I tried that before with Vists and it didn't work. It seems to have worked with Win7.
I did a select all, deleted items from iTunes library but kept the files. I did all this with the hard drive disconnected. I went ahead and name the drive (m:) as you suggested. It works on two levels the drive is a My Book and contains my media.
I'm not going to mark this as solved until I've had a few on-off cycles.

If I am understanding you correctly, it sounds like you are returning to an old iPhone that has been erased and you would like to set it up as a new device without restoring from a backup which would affect the name of your iPhone, as well as the contents therein. Basically, it seems like you may be stuck on a screen that is asking if you would like to restore your device from the backup that is filed under the name of your new iPhone, or if you would like to set up the device as a new device. I would suggest that you set it up as a new device to achieve your desired results.

The only supported method to get media onto an iDevice is via iTunes. Read the User's Guide it will describe how to do this in detail.
iCloud does not put media on the device, but using iTunes Match and iCloud it is possible to have access to all media that exists on your computer, but only when the device has Internet access. It will not load media onto the device.
Use of 3rd party tools to transfer files to the device is not supported.

Your music should be in your iTunes library, that is how it gets synced to the iPod. If that music is not present in the iTunes library, you will need to get a 3rd party software for the computer to get the music off the original iPod and then move it to the iTunes library to be able to sync it to the new iPod. I'm attempting to delete music from my iPhone 4 (iOS7). When I connect it to iTunes, and the music shows up, I delete the music from the phone. When I disconnect the phone, the music is still there. The same thing happens if I try to sync the phone before disconnecting. I have "manually manage music" checked. Additionally, when I reconnect my iPhone, the music I "deleted" from it when it was previously connected to iTunes no longer appears, preventing me from trying to delete it again.
I know I can swipe left on each song to delete it on my phone, and I have been, but that takes a long time when you're trying to delete everything on your iPhone.

I've about had it up to here with this new Photos scheme. I reorganised my Aperture libraries on both my iMac and MBA in preparation for this, delayed turning Photos on for a couple of days until I thought everything was ready based upon the limited advice that was out there, and then got stuck in an endless loop of "uploading" and "preparing" every time I opened Photos. There are 19,975 images in my Aperture library on the iMac. I was stuck at Uploading at anywhere between that number and 19,000 with no progress after hours of waiting. I tried all the tricks mentioned here including re booting, restarting the app, repairing/rebuilding the database, killing the "cloudd" process, etc.today Today when I restarted Photos, it now said I had 23,775 images to upload- 4000
more than I have-and of course it got stuck there, like it has for the last week.
I copied the previous Aperture library (pre Photos migration)back to my iMac and opened it in Aperture. Thankfully, all the photos I had taken on my iPhone this week during this Photos clusterphuck transition were in the Aperture Stream so I didn't lose any of those. I'm willing to give this whole thing one more shot. So i need some advice. It is hard to say from your post, why the migration did not succeed in your case.
by "stuck on upload" do you mean, you opened the Aperture library in Photos, and Photos converted it to a Photo Library, and then the upload to iCloud Photo Library did hang? Or did already the upgrade to the Photo Library fail?
If you want the Aperture library to upload to iCloud Photo Library, it needs to be on a disk formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled) and the original image files must not be referenced. Referenced originals will not upload.
Also, the upload may hang, if you do not have enough free iCloud storage, orr if one of the videos or photos in your library is in an unsupported format or corrupted.
To start over, try to repair and rebuild the Aperture library before opening it in Photos. Try all Aperture Library First Aid options - starting with repairing the permissions. (Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual)

You will have to delete the photos that are already in icloud too; otherwise you are risking duplicates.
Can you launch Photos at all? If yes, delete all photos in Photos and empty the Recently Deleted album. Wait for the deletion to sync to iCloud. Then delete the Photos.photolibrary.

Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a computer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto or Aperture, both have its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you are an iMovie/ Final Cut user, both apps have their own individual Trash location that needs to be emptied, too!
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.

When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

HT1338 How can I start a software update from scratch? error states that it was corrupted during transfer but when it starts over later, it still give the same error

Software updates tells me it needs to download and install a new version of itunes. When this notice first appeared the download started but stopped after about 34 MB and said the download was corrupted. Later (after many restarts), the notice appears again but the download starts where it left off and immediately gives me the message that it is corrupted. How do I force the download to start over from scratch?

Check the version you're being offered, and go to Apple Support Downloads.
Read the info on the update and decide if you actually need it. (if your OS version is 10.6.4 as shown in your info, I doubt that you will need it at all).

The sort fields should generally be empty unless you've putting in custom values to sort solo artists by their surnames. You can apply common changes to thousands of tracks at once, just don't apply the wrong change because there is no undo.
It is a good idea to backup before undertaking large scale changes. See this backup tip for a suggested approach.

Don't quite understand what you mean, but it says at the bottom that you are still using iWeb 08 so depending on what OSX you are running, you might consider upgrading to iWeb 09. This works with Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks.
Apple no longer sells iWeb so if you decide to upgrade, then you'll need to purchase iWeb by going to Amazon and buying the iLife 09 or 11 boxed sets, both of which contain iWeb 09.
Install this on your Mac and it might solve your problems, or just ditch iWeb and start again with one of the newer programmes out there that are still being supported and updated, such as RapidWeaver, Sandvox, Freeway Pro/Express, Flux 4, WebAcapella 4 and EverWeb (http://www.everwebapp.com).
