Need to transfer apps & contacts from old 4 to new 5S - BUT...

I hadn't updated the OS on the 4 for a long time, since each upgrade made it perform worse. Now I can't get the 4 to upgrade (when I try, it just says "software update unavailable, try again later"), and Verizon says without doing so I can't transfer over my apps and contacts to the new phone. No worries about photos or music - those are saved elsewhere already. Any advice? Thx!

Verizon is wrong. You have a current backup of your iPhone 4? If so, follow the directions here:

No iTunes content is included in any iPhone backup, so after you restore your new phone from the backup of your old phone, either re-download your apps & music, or sync it to your new phone.

You do not put contacts into itunes at all.
Iphone syncs contacts with Outlook, Address Book, etc on your ocmputer, not itunes.

What you see in iCloud is stored in iCloud, so it really doesn't matter what computer you are on. Once that computer is signed onto iCloud and the iCloud options are selected, you have full access to all of that information, and much of it is pushed back to your computer.
If you are referring to the data in an iCloud backup created by an iOS device, then that is not something that would be on a computer at all.

Plug it in and sync.
