Need to Undo Merge Events

Okay, so I did a bad bad thing. In photo view, I selected several photos in the bottom untitled event to merge into the event above it. I command-A'd to select the rest of the photos in that event and dragged them into my target event above. After 20 seconds of watching the beach ball spin, I realized I had selected all 8,000 photos in my library and moved them into that one event.
After a frenzied session of command-., esc, command-z strokes, it was apparent that nothing was going to stop the merge. 5 minutes later, sure enough, all photos were in that one event and all other events (probably over 100) were lost in space. No undo.
Browsed a few posts here to find out that I am SOL.
I did a Time Machine a couple of weeks ago, but am unsure where to locate the preference or other support file to restore my previous events. I also don't want to lose the photos I've imported since that backup. I have over 15gb of photos in the library.
Please advise.

If you have *not imported any new photos since the Time Machine copy* of a couple of weeks ago you can try this:
1 - while in the Pictures folder enter the Time Machine.
2 - go back in time to the latest backup.
3 - restore the library but keep the original library - we'll call it Lib B.
4 - move the restored library (B) to the desktop.
5 - rename the original library back to just "iPhoto Library" - Lib A
6 - open the Lib A package and move the Library6.iPhoto file to the Pictures folder.
7 - leaving the A package open open the Lib B package and move the Library6.iPhoto file into Lib A.
8 - close both library packages.
9 - launch iPhoto and see if your events have been recovered.
If that doesn't work or causes you to lose some events that were imported after the TM backup, you can replace the Library6.iPhoto file with the one you moved to the Pictures folder.
If you have to stay with the one event library you could create smart albums based on some time frame, i.e. month by month, then select the photos in one smart album and create a new event for them.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

How do I merge events - not just combining pictures into one event?

I have a iPhoto 09 and haven't upgraded yet. I have a bunch of events and it's hard to get through all of them. Can I combine the events while retaining the seperate events? Sort of an event within an event; not adding all the pictures from one event into anoher event and losing the deliniation.
Or, can I archive them somewhere so they don't appear in my Event list?

No. If you merger events you'll end up with just one event representing those that you merged.
To make selected events invisible in the Events mode do the following:
1 - select the events and double click on one of them to open all in the same window.
2 - type Command+A to select all photos.
3 - right or Control-click on any of the selected photos.
4 - click on Hide in the window that comes up:
That will hid those events from the list of other events in the Events mode and wherever else those photos are, i.e. albums, books, etc.
To makes the Events visible again use the View ➙ Hidden Photos menu option:
To make them permanently viewable you'll need to select those events and follow steps 1-4 above but click on the Show button this time.

Help needed in finding appropriate event in code

Hi,
I am designing an online examination system where the students can login into the system anytime between a 'start time' and an 'end time'. The problem that I have is once the 'end time' has lapsed, I need to fire an event to make a state change to indicate that the time has run out for those students who are still solving the questions.
What event should be fired for this? As the state change code does not depend upon any event that the user performs.

There are no longer events in Photos. The new Photos for Mac is structuring the Photos Library automatically into Moments based on dates and locations. You cannot change the moments.
When Photos migrates an iPhoto Library, it will create album for each event in the iPhoto Library, as a substitute, but these album based "events" are a fake, because albums behave differently from events.
In iPhoto each photo could be only in one event, so you could move photos from one event to another. With albums, dragging a photo from an album to another album will simply add the photo to the other album as well.
You will have to remove the photo from the original album.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

I am unable to merge events running iPhoto '11 - 9.4.2 (710.42) and Mountain Lion, 10.8.2. All options on the events down menu are greyed out and I am therefore unable to merge any events. Is there a solution?

I tried to drag one event into another event but was unable to do so. The event that I tried to move into a second one would only move to another position in the event columnn, but it would not merge into another one.

IPhoto '08 - Moving/merging events causes photos to be lost

I'm trying to move my photos from Picasa to my iMac. I have around 20,000 photos and movies organized into folders on my old PC. I am able to import the pictures to iPhoto but when I try to re-organize events (move some photos from one event to another, merge events) the iPhoto library gets corrupted. *When I click on the thumbnail I can see a big exclamation mark instead of a photo*.
I have faced this issue yesterday (after a few hours spent on organizing pictures in iPhoto!). Today, I tried to re-build the iPhoto library by holding option and command keys - rebuilding did not help. I thought maybe starting from scratch will help - I started from the fresh/empty library in iPhoto, things were moving OK for a while, but at some point I have observed the same problem: I merged two events and I no longer can access certain photos (I can see the exclamation mark instead).
I did not open/modify iPhoto package manually. All the operations were executed via iPhoto application.
While moving photos/merging I can see the set of the following errors in the Console:
* Unable to move /Users/Dominika/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2000/Tripto_CT/06_BristolCT06.jpg
to /Users/Dominika/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2000/Mar 6, 2000/06BristolCT06.jpg
There are quite a few of them, but they do not seem to create the problem. I have checked all the photos reported in these messages in the console and I could open them without any issue (no exclamation mark).
*The second type of error seems to be a source of the problem:*
** Couldn't convert path /Users/dominika/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2001/Inne/070_RockyNeckCT14.jpg" to an FSRef to put on the pasteboard.*
*I'm getting these messages in the console after merging two events, and I cannot access my photos under this event any more (getting exclamation mark)*
The third type of error:
* Can't make new movie: -2048 from path ..../Originals/2001/...jpg
When I opened the iPhoto Library package yesterday I confirmed that problematic photos are still available in the library (but under a different relative location then the thumbnails).
There seem to be a few serious issues with iPhoto. Apart from the fact that it easily breaks the consistency of the iPhoto library, it does not report ANY error to the user that bad things are happening behind the scenes.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Your issue seems to be with the underlying file system, not with iPhoto.
Some background:
Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.
When you move files between Events they are also moved on the HD.
Couldn't convert path /Users/dominika/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2001/Inne/070_RockyNeckCT14.jpg" to an FSRef to put on the pasteboard.
means that, for some reason, the file system is unable to execute that move. (That's the reference to the FSRef). However, iPhoto thinks the file was moved, hence the !.
I've simply never seen this issue reported here before. Is everything else on your Mac working correctly?
First off:
Check your HD for errors with Disk Utility, see if that reports anything.

Merge events in photo

How do you merge events in photo (iPhoto) on the iPad? The (for me) normal Wayne in iPhoto of dragthing one event over THE other did not wrok

I was asking because I was importing photos from my Canon 40D camera. Some photos imported are marker as such by a green checkmark, but others, are imported but are not checked. So when I connect the camera again, the iPad photo app imports them again. When I connect annoteer Canon camera (the S5is), everything import normal.
I use the iPad on vacation only as a backup for the cameras. Later I will import the photos on my iMac.
Any suggestions?

Merge Events / Split Events buttons missing

The new iPhoto has removed two buttons I use frequently: Merge events and Split events. When I go for a weekend trip, I want all of the photos to be in the same event.
The Merge option and the Auto Split option is in the menu. But it'd be nice to have it on the control bar at the bottom again, as it was before.
How about an option in the Preferences to put things in the control bar?

I also missed the buttons to Merge and Split events which I do frequently. I did find a keyboard shortcut for Splitting Events is the S key. Simply select the photos you want to split off into an event and then press S. So, I thought they must have made M a shortcut for merge, but no, they didn't. I will also send feedback to Apple regarding this. We should have a way to customize the bar with these options.

Merging events in iPhoto with pictures named the same in each event? Will I lose the photo or will iPhoto rename the duplicate names?

I am trying to merge 2 events in iPhoto, but i notice that in the first event my photos are named by my camera as DSC_001, DSC_002, etc. But the same is true of the photos in the second event DSC_001, DSC_002, etc. If I merge these 2 events will I lose pictures that have the same photo/file name? Or will iPhoto change the name of DSC_001 from the second event when it merges event 1 & event 2? I am hesitant, I don't want to lose half of my pictures.

With iPhoto 9 and later when merging events the files stay in their original folder inside the library so there's no problem with files with the same file name. It's when you export same named files to the same folder on the hard drive that you may run into a problem.

Merge Events Crashes iMovie '11

I have been searching to an answer to this problem for months. I organize my iMovie events by month, which involves a fair amount of splitting and merging events. Back in the August/September, 2012 timeframe, I could no longer merge events without iMovie '11 (9.08) crashing every time. It starts just fine, sets up the merged event, then just quits. No forum of any kind has discussed this same kind of problem. I had not, as far as I can tell, made any changes to my configuration betwen when this worked and when it didn't.
I have an iMac, 20-inch, Mid 2007 running OS X 10.8.2.
Things I have tried:
1. Checked memory (I have 4GB, so no issues) and hard drive space (also no issues 302 GB available).
2. Reloaded iMovie. No change.
3. Reloaded Mountain Lion. No change.
4. Moved two events to an external drive and then tried from there. No change. Still crashes.
5. Looked at all of the other causes for crashes of iMovie and took those steps (deleted plists, ivx, etc...). Nothing works.
I just can't find any relief from this problem. Nothing I do seems to have even the slightest impact.
Has anybody has this problem and/or know how to fix it?

I am not entirely surprised this isn't considered a known issue. I was unable to find any evidence of others having the problem, at least until you posted this morning. I was really relieved to see I am not alone, although I am sorry you are having the same frustrations.
I did report the error to Apple on at least a dozen occaisions with a fully annotated error report each time it crashed. Or maybe 12 out of the 50 crashes. I can readily reproduce the problem, and moving the movies to another drive didn't change the behavior.
I ended up spending a few hours reimporting all my video since August, 2012, and now everything is aligned properly. And I'll continue to do the same workaround going forward. But I would like the program to work as designed.
It is now a known issue since you reported it? If not, is there a way I should be reporting it as well?

I clicked "block images from...." in the right click menu and need to undo it

i was opening the right click menu so i could click "open link in new tab" for pictures on facebook and accidentally hit "block images from..." and i can't see photos and need to undo it. i found one website that said to fix it by clicking these....

Automatically merge Events in iPhoto?

I'm trying to get the program Hazel (or Automator for that matter) to automatically add newly downloaded photos to iPhoto....however, i end up getting multiple events of the same thing....is there a way to use Hazel or some other program to automatically merge these Events (since all of the photos are from the same file folder.?)

Every import creates at least one new Event. You cannot import to an Event. I've scanned the Automator options and I can see no way to merge Events. If Automator can't do it I doubt Hazel can, but best to drop a line to the makers. Maybe they can help.

     I am displaying LED light symbol to the output. I need to change the cell value that mean LED display from red to green on double click event. I am able to get the modify cell for data_changed, but I need same event on the double_click...
