Need to unfreeze MacBook Pro

How do I  unfreeze my Mac book pro after foolishly trying to install Maverick without realizing my system is not capable of downloading the software?
<Subject Edited by Host>

You can try booting into Recovery.  Hold the command R key on boot sequence.
If you have access use the DiskUtility to format and reinstall the OS
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
If that does not take you to the internet recovery you need the original install disc.
genius bar could do it for you perhaps.

  • How much Ram do I need in a MacBook Pro for Software Engineering?

I plan to buy a new MacBook Pro in the next month for school and hopefully for work. I would like this computer to get me at least 4 years of use. I will be majoring in software engineering. My question is how much ram would I need in a Macbook Pro for software engineering? I am currenty looking at the 15" 2.3ghz base model with 8gb of ram as well as the 15" 2.4ghz base model retina. I really like the retina but its at my max budget. Will the 8gb of ram be enough since it is not upgradable? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am currenty looking at the 15" 2.3ghz base model with 8gb of ram
The MB Pro 15" 2.3Ghz with 8GB of RAM should do the trick.
Save your $$$ on the retina and stick to your budget

Provided the computer-end fits, you are free to use one with a HIGHER Wattage rating. No damage whatsoever will be done to any component, but it will likely run cooler (but may be slightly heavier).
If you use one with too LOW a Wattage rating, you will not be able to charge and run at the same time, and your computer's top speed (for its most intensive computations) will be limited.

Worse software you can install on a Mac. This software is so invasive, it's nearly impossible to uninstall.

  • How do I know what battery I need for my MacBook Pro?

Hello, Is there a way to find out what model the battery is that I need for my MacBook Pro without tearing it apart? I have the serial number and also the Hardware UUID, whatever that is. If I have to tear it apart I will, but I'm hoping to keep that to a minimum as I'm afraid to tempt fate!

skink - thanks for the kind words.
Depending on your model (check under the Apple menu, "About This Mac", "More Info...", "System Report..." and tell me your Model Identifier. Mine, for instance, says (under Hardware Overview):
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name:    MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier:    MacBookPro8,2
Depending on your model, a 'good' number of cycles might be as low as 300 or as high as 1,000. But if the condition is "normal," as you say (and as mine reads) you really shouldn't have anything to worry about.
If it's a battery that needs to be replaced by an Apple tech, it's 'built-in,' meaning you can't just turn it over and change the battery (such was the case with my 2006 1,1 model and some models after that).
It's always good to keep an eye on battery health and to use some methods of keeping your CPU load at a minimum when using battery power. Viewing movies, whether in the DVD player or those that are on your computer, will really tax your CPU and result in lower battery life. To maximize your battery life, try to have as few apps open as possible when under battery power - particularly those that drain your CPU. You can keep and eye on this by keeping Activity Monitor, in your Utilities folder, open at all times. If you see a process that's taking 10+% of your CPU load, that's an app you should close or at least keep an eye on - my Firefox browser will sometime get in the 13% range, but I don't worry about that.
Battery use is, for me, primarily about Internet browsing and email. I keep open Firefox, Outlook, Activity Monitor, Word, Acrobat, Word, TextEdit, and a few other small apps and I generally get 7+ hours on battery time.
I would also suggest using two little utilities to keep an eye on battery usage - one is "Battery Health" available at the App Store free. The other is gfxCardStatus which will let you use discrete graphics, changing your GPU to the less intensive processor. It's available at http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus and is "Mountain Lion ready" as of it's latest release.
Good luck - see how many more hours you can eke out of that battery before thinking about having it replaced. As much as I use mine, I know that I'm going to go over the 1,000 cycle mark before my AppleCare expires, so I know that I'm going to have to get it replaced. But for now, I'm getting the advertised hours and am quite happy.

  • I bought the wrong version as I need it for macbook pro but somehow bought windows...help

I guess I will have to wait until normal office hours.  I have no idea why it bought the window version as I did not realize that is what was selected.  I hope I can get it exchanged for the photoshop elements 13 for macbook pro retina display.     Anyone know if this is an easy switch and one they will do?

When buying HD versions of shows, only the HD copy will automatically download now (probably due to requests from people who don't need/want the SD version and complained about it being forced on them). The SD copy can be downloaded from your purchases area in iTunes, though. On the main iTunes Store page, go to Purchases under the Quick Links and then select TV shows. Click the "Not On This Computer" button. Uncheck the "Download HD when available" box and you should then see the SD copies of the shows and be able to download them.
    Regards.

  • What cables do I need to connect MacBook Pro to the TV VGA port

    Hi,
The HDMI port on my Maxent tv is not working.  I am hoping to connect my MacBook Pro to the TV via the VGA port on the TV to watch Netflix and movies.  What cables do I need that will connect to a VGA port on a TV from my MacBook Pro (2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo)?  And will that cable support audio or will I need a separate audio cable?
    Thanks-
    Sheri
    OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

    Hey Sheri Lynn,
Thanks for the question. Our online store has a helpful tool that should guide you through the process of picking the best adapter for your MacBook model. You can check it out here:
Get help choosing Mac video adapters - Apple Store (U.S.)

If you are connecting via VGA you will need a separate audio cable if your TV supports it.
    Thanks,

  • Need to run macbook pro in 32 bit mode to run and external modem how do i change from 64 bit to 32 bit

I have a macbook pro which i presume runs in a 64 bit mode. living in a country without broadband i need to use a 32 bit modem, can i change the system to run this modem at 32 bit as it wont load at 64?

Reboot holding 3 and 2, see if your modem works.
Rebooting again sets it back to 64 bit.
If 32 bit works then your fine, for now, but eventually your going to have to go 64 bit.

  • How much hard drive do I need on the Macbook Pro?

I am buying a Macbook Pro 13" to use for email, internet, word processing and photo editing (in raw and jpeg).  It comes wtih 500 or 750 GB Seriesl ATA hard drive which is way more hard drive than I need.  I will keep most of my photos on an external hard drive and in a cloud and retain about a thousand photos on the Macbook's hard drive at a time for viewing and processing.  I would like to upgrad to the Solid State hard drive but want to choose the least amount of hard drive that would be sufficient for the applications I would like to run and the realtively small amount of photos I want to store on the Macbook Pro.  Do you think this would be sufficient?  Is the solid state hard drive so much better than the serieal ata hard drive that it would be a good investment?

The downside of moving a lot of your storage to an external hard drive is that then you need a second external hard drive on which to back the first one up, and you need to remember to actually DO the backups regularly. I greatly prefer to have a large enough internal drive to store all my files, just because it makes backing them all up so much easier (and therefore more likely to be done often).
As for the downside of SSDs, do they need any more downside than costing several times more per GB of storage than hard drives? Particularly when they're still in their early childhood, are still improving by leaps and bounds, and better SSDs will probably cost half or less than half as much per GB a year from now as they do today? There's more than enough downside to discourage me from buying an SSD now. Thanks, but I'll wait for prices to come down, sizes to increase, the limited-write-cycles problem to be addressed on Macs, and SSDs' long-term reliability to be more definitively confirmed. And frankly, I just don't care whether a file takes half a second or three seconds to open. I can afford to wait 20 or 30 seconds a day.

  • What kind of SSD do I need for my Macbook Pro 13(MD102E/A)?

    Hi guys and gals,
The thing is that my hd is dead as punk so I will have to replace it. I want to replace it with a Solid State Drive, can you guys help me find what kind of hard drive can I use for this model: MD102E/A Macbook Pro?
    Thanks in advance.
    Ade Goldman

Any 2.5" SATA SSD will work. Is it your plan to do the work yourself or take it to Apple. If the latter, then you will need to arrange to have an Apple SSD installed by them. They will not install one that you buy. If you do the work then shop for a suitable product at OWC or you can purchase other brands at places such as NewEgg.com. OCZ and Samsung both have compatible SSDs. Be sure to get one that supports SATA III 6 Gb/s also referred to as 6G.

  • What type of internal Hard Drive do I need for 2015 Macbook Pro 13"

I want to replace the 256 GB hard drive that came with my 2015 MBP w/ Retina with something much larger like a 1 TB hard drive. Is there a specific type of hard drive I need?
Solid State Hard drives seem to be a ton of money for a 1 TB Drive. is there anything in the 100-300$ range that will have more gigs of space and be an improvement to the hard drive currently in the 2015 Macbook Pro w/ Retina?
Would something like this be an option?

Update your records.  None of the retina MBPs have soldered in SSDs.  One fastener holds them in place.

  • Need Help, Upgrade or Not? Do I just WANT or really NEED a new Macbook Pro?

Good day everyone, I love these forums, so much valuable input and information from you all.
My question is, *should I upgrade* to a new 13" early 2011 Macbook Pro, from my present computer, an early 2008 white Macbook 4.1 with 4gig RAM, 180g SSD Vertex 2, new battery, and with Applecare till Oct-2011.
My questions are whether *spending almost $1,800 cdn* for a new 13" Macbook Pro, + Applecare, + 8gig ram, + various display adapters, and hopefully keep my sata II OCZ 180g Vertex2 SSD are going to be worth the upgrade? I could sell my older Macbook 4.1 for @ $700 cdn, so the difference is @ $1,100.
*The male ego* in me has a NEED for SPEED...but my realistic rational side says ...$1,100 buys lots of other things...
My present Macbook does what I need, *but is limited* because of the SATA 1.5 bus, however I love my new 180g Vertex2 SSD. It gave my older Macbook a new speed boost. Unfortunately I went to see the new Macbook Pro's and fell in love... Do I NEED, or do I WANT????
The *new Macbook Pro's specs and features* are very appealing, as I love the aluminum body, the SATA III bus, the future potential of Thunderbolt (5 gig Super Duper CCC clones...), and the 5,900 Geekbench scores, my current machine is 2,900 Geekbench (imagine with a sata-II Vertex SSD...) My current xBench specs are below:
*My present computer usage* consists of a 24" external monitor, three external HD (Super Duper, CCC, T/M) and I always have running at the same time programs like Mail, Safari (12 tabs open), VM Parallels Desktop running XP SP3, iPhoto, iTunes, aMSN, iCal, Youtube, VNC, Skype, HTML software, Time Machine, basic photo editing, etc...
*My present setup* works fine, and naturally I read the forums about the new Macbook Pro's, and there appears to be lots of issues, heating, monitor, fans, noise, wifi, etc..... hmmmmm... maybe I should wait for the next incremental Macbook Pro upgrade?
*Decisions, Decisions... :)* Keep what I have, or spend $1,800 and than sell my old Macbook...?
Thanks for reading my long post, and looking forward to *any of your thoughts,* IAN...

  • I need to upgrade MacBook Pro

Hello and happy new year to you guys!
I own a MacBook Pro 15" 2,53 GHz mid-2009. since I'm a poor student I can't really afford buying a new one for now, I just purchased an iPad mini 2 (which I don't regret at all).
So here I wanted to upgrade it since the ram seems to be not enough now (It has 2x2 gb), I always only have 800 - 150 MB left. I am not sure if it's why my Mac is a little bit slow, but anyway. I decided to upgrade the ram.
The thing is I'm not sure if I can actually post link there but I was actually going to buy these:
http://www.amazon.fr/Komputerbay-DDR3-SODIMM-broches-1066Mhz/dp/B0031GELDM/ref=s r_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420154084&sr=8-1&keywords=SO-DIMM+DDR3+PC3-8500 the problem is there are multiple versions of it, like:
    2x4 Go
    2x4 Go Apple HS
    2x4 Go HS
    2x4 Go HS Apple
I really wanted to do all this by myself I've checked here: http://support.apple.com/fr-fr/HT1270#link2 but I still have no idea what HS and HS Apple mean, please help.
Since I am here I wanted to ask a few more question:
-Do I also need to upgrade my Mac which has 250 GB with a SSD? Or just replacing the RAM will be enough for now? I don't really need a lot of space I have about 3 external disk with 2TB in.
-Also is there a site cheaper than Amazon to buy the rams? I live in France.
-And is it worth buying a new bluetooth card so I can use Handoff on my MacBook Pro with my iPhone 5 and iPad mini 2? While looking for upgrading my MacBook Pro I've read that I could actually upgrade the bluetooth to use Handoff.
Thanks for reading. (Sorry English is not my native language)

I looked at the Mactracker program and it says the memory specs for the Mid 2009 MacBook Pro 15" are:
    204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
and wherever you get them, make sure you ask them they are guaranteed to work in your particular MacBook or that you can return them if they don't work. One thing you might want to look at is faster memory - it might be cheaper. So if the memory were rated at 1333 MHz, it would run fine in your MacBook since it memory bus is only 1066 MHz (you can always use memory rated faster than your bus, but never slower). For example I just saw the 1333 MHz 8GB kit for $75 US (at http://www.bestbuy.com/site/corsair-2-pack-4gb-1-3ghz-ddr3-sodimm-laptop-memory- kit/1623588.p?id=1218273846150&skuId=1623588&ref=06&loc=01&ci_src=14110944&ci_sk u=1623588&extensionType=pla:g&s_kwcid=PTC!pla!!!66713924146!g!!55678495279&kpid= 1623588&k_clickid=6bd738e7-c831-4005-9bae-e56cd74712ff&kpid=1623588&lsft=ref:212 ,loc:1&ksid=6bd738e7-c831-4005-9bae-e56cd74712ff&ksprof_id=8&ksaffcode=2760&ksde vice=c) and the 1066MHz memory was $90 US - so 75 euros seems same as the $90 memory, but not as good a deal as the $75 memory or the $70 memory at http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=889312&gclid=CPu__NXA9MIC FegRMwodnHIAgw&Q=&is=REG&A=details
Try to get memory with a lifetime warranty also. I've always had good luck with Amazon (and never a problem for returns). Also OWC or macsales.com is a good source, but not sure what issues are to sell from US to France and if VAT issues (is that only in UK?).
But as long as you verify with seller the memory will work with your model of MacBook Pro and if they say it will and it doesn't, you should be OK as long as they are reputable and stand behind their sales. You should probably ask advice of friends in France who have upgraded their memory and see what their experience was where they bought their memory. And verify that the warranty will still be valid in France(?) or where ever you live also from where every you buy it.
I think the "Apple HS" and "HS Apple" and "HS" are just minor typo's, as could not find anything like those comments in my looking at US memory web sites. When you get the memory look closely at all the memory chips on each of the cards - they should all be the same make/model/speed/type if good quality memory - not chips from several makers on the same card even if the specs might be the same.
Another thing to keep an eye out for is the voltage rating of the memory - memory rated at 1.35v is higher quality than memory rated at 1.5v according to what I read at http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1771553/35v-memory.html
Also, the SSD upgrade I think is a very good idea - I did that on my MacBook and have been very happy with it - speeded things up a bunch compared to the regular hard disks. All the newer MacBooks now come standard with SSD drives and there's a reason why - they are a lot faster. Transfer speeds up to 5 times faster (about 150MBps max vs 30MBps for regular disk drives). Another thing to think about is if you don't use the DVD much you can put a second drive (like the SSD where the DVD drive fits) and have lots of disk capacity. The down side is if you use your DVD a lot, it's awkward to carry around an external DVD player, but having a SSD for speed (with the OS and APPS on it) and the hard drive with your data/user_files on it is very nice). Boot up speed with and SSD is typically under 20-30 seconds and from a regular drive about a couple of minutes if I recall right. You need to get a special bracket to fit in the space that the DVD drive was in that holds the SSD drive (or another 2.5" SATA drive). I got a Crucial CT480 SSD drive and have been very happy with it for the last year. Would guess they have faster drives now than it, so do a little research and ask lots of questions.
    Good luck..bon chance
