Need to uninstall software

First Mac in many many years. I need to uninstall software. How do I do this and make sure all related files are deleted as well?

Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind 4.9, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
AppZapper 2.0.1
AppDelete 3.2.6
Automaton 1.50
Hazel
AppCleaner 2.1.0
CleanApp
iTrash 1.8.2
Amnesia
Uninstaller 1.15.1
Spring Cleaning 11.0.1
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

Open Apple Mail, and open Preferences (under Mail in the Menu Bar).  On the General tab, check the "Default Email Reader" and set it to Mail (6.6).

How to download Acrobat Standard X from a CD? Do I need to uninstall the existing Acrobat software?

You download from the internet, not from a CD... you might install or copy things from a CD.
But to answer your question properly:
    1. What is your existing Acrobat software, exactly, including version number?
    2. Are you trying to install and getting an error? If so please give full details.

  • How do you uninstall software?  I have tried to download printer software that needs to be reinstalled and I cannot proceed until the original version is completely uninstalled.

I have installed printer software that needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled and I keep getting an error message saying that the application is running and needs to be closed before proceeding.  I do not know how to close applications and uninstall software.  Any help????

If its an actual application and appears as an icon in applications then click and hold over the icon and drag it to the trash can. That should uninstall it as far as I know.
If its like the HP printer software then there is an uninstalled icon within the folder.
    Hope it helps.

  • Can I transfer CC for Teams membership (Photoshop) to a new user on the same machine without uninstalling and reinstalling software? i.e. one user left new user started needing the same software.

We have Creative Cloud for Teams, most users using Photoshop.  One user left the company and has been replaced by another user.  I removed the first user's membership and assigend it to the new user.  When she runs Photoshop, she gets a 00 Days left message.  Photoshop still seems to be useable right now but I'm wondering if I need to uninstall Photoshop and re-install it using her credentials?  Seems like a lto of unnecessary work to me.

    Hi Batterry,
There is no need for removal of the product . You can simply launch the product , click on Help>Sign out . Close the product and sign in with the new user's Adobe ID & Password. This should activate the product .

  • How to UNINSTALL software?

I am having serious issues w/ my Mac (ie. Safari and other apps "unexpectedly quit", unable to open apps if other apps already open, desktop and Safari loading VERY slowly). I took my mac to a local Apple store, and it looks like I need to uninstall the Virex software that came pre-installed on my mac.
It was also suggested that I archive and re-install my whole OS!
I'm somewhat intimidated by the thought of messing w/ my OS, so I've muddled along w/ the same issues for several months now, doing quick, minor fixes to get me by (ie. closing open apps to use other apps, resetting Safari and the cache, trashing library .plist files and the icons folder). My usual quick fixes don't seem to be helping now, sooooo....it looks like I have to get down and dirty now.
How do I uninstall the Virex software that came already installed on my Mac?
How do I archive files (and what files SHOULD be archived, for that matter) and uninstall/reinstall my OS?

    KSilver:
Take a look at Dr. Smoke's FAQ on Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to launch and see if it offers any help.
In addition to John's suggestion to run Unix Maintenance (CRON cleaning) you may need to do some other maintenance. Gulliver offers good advice in Mac OS X System Maintenance.
Please post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • When I connect my phone iTunes tells me that I need to uninstall and reinstall a 64-bit version.  I have the 64-bit version installed.  Help

I have been fighting with iTunes for the past few days.  My wife deleted a file by "accident" and I have been working to get iTunes to work ever since.  I have worked through numerous issues and managed to work through them all, but have now hit one that I can't and that I can't find a solution elsewhere.  I have done the complete uninstall (complete meaning, very complete) and reinstall of the 64-bit version of iTunes several times now.  The software works fine until I plug in my old iPhone (4).  When I do, the software popps up with a message that says that I have the wrong version of iTunes and need to uninstall my current program and reinstall the 64-bit version.  Anyone else out there had this happen and if so, what did you do???

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, does your device connect without that message now?

  • Need to uninstall QuickTime 7.1

I need to uninstall QuickTime 7.1 and roll back to QuickTime 7.0.1. How can I manually uninstall QuickTime? What do I need to delete / remove from my system?
I have a software product called 3D Java that currently doesn't work with QuickTime 7.1. I have talked with the vendor to resolve the issue, but they told me to roll back to QuickTime 7.0.1 or upgrade to Tiger because of the issues with their product and the newer version of QuickTime. They also told me that they are trying to get Apple to create a reinstall to a prior version of QuickTime.
    Thanks!
    733 MHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

It is a little frustrating to see Apple pumping out software updates like a pez dispenser - everything from Security Updates - to bits and pieces of their iLife Suite - and all the rest of it - while not integrating an uninstaller or reinstaller on their QT release. But I'd assume one is forthcoming.
It is one thing to have a new version of Quicktime that negates the functionality of third-party software until such time as those vendors release new versions - I get that - happens every time. It's something else altogether to release a QT version that seems to be disrupting some of the core functionalites of QT and also giving people (esp. intel folks) a rash of other headaches.

  • Do I Need to uninstall Elements 10 in order to install Elements 11

I have Photoshop Elements 10 installed and I purchased and downloaded Elements 11 today. My problem is when installing the software it goes through most of the install untill it comes to "Shared Technologies", then it shows an error that says the "Shared Technologies" didn't install and the install backtracks and uninstalls everything that it had installed. So, does anyone know how I can install the downloaded Photohop Elements 11 without getting the error? I also have Photoshop Premiere Elements 10 and Lightroom 4.

no, you don't need to uninstall pse 10.

  • How do I move from a box license version of Adobe CS6 to a cloud license? Do I need to uninstall CS6

    Hi All,
We have a user who currently has a box (serial key) version of Adobe CS6 installed on his machine. We now have a number of cloud licenses available and I want to move hm to a cloud license so that we can install the apps available from the cloud.
Do I need to uninstall the previous version of Adobe CS6 and then re-install from the cloud or can I just re-license the software using the creative cloud for desktops application?
    Many Thanks
    Paul.

There is no need for it. You can run CS6 Perpetual and CC on the same machine without uninstalling CS6.

No need to uninstall unless you want to. Major versions can co-exist.

Do I need to uninstall CS4 (non-Education) Design Standard before I install CS6 ( Education) Design Standard Software? How do I do this, is there an uninstall mechanism available?

    Hi bmcgon1,
It doesnt matter if you uninstall  the older version or not.CS6 installer would be a new install and it would not overwrite or uninstall the older CS4 version software. if you dont intend to use the older version CS4 software you can unisntall using the Creative Suite Cleaner tool.

  • Do I Need to Uninstall Audigy 2 After Installing X-

I just installed a new X-Fi Fatalty. I thought the installer would overwrite or dispose of my old sound card drivers and software, but it didn't. So now my Start Menu has a drop-down menu for both my old Audigy 2 ZS and the new X-Fi. Do I need to uninstall the old Audigy stuff or can I just leave it alone? If I need to uninstall, what's the best way to do it's I didn't see anything in Add/Remove Programs that would apply. Thanks.

Don't you see "Sound Blaster Audigy 2" appear there (Add/Remove programs)?

Well, I'm looking for the Sound Blaster X-Fi in add/remove and don't see that either. I installed the 2.07's. I'm trying to stick the new 2.09's on, but I'd like to uninstall nicley. Guess I'll just have to use the setup.exe in the older drivers...yes, that seems to be working...not as pretty as add/remove tho.
