Need to UPDATE but don't want to lose rankings, last played, playlists, etc

I need to download the new version of iTunes for some reason, in order to buy an ipod and even to download certain songs in the itunes store. This is very annoying.
In the past, when I've updated my itunes to a new version, I've lost the song rankings, playlists, last played info, etc for over 5,000 songs/videos. It was EXTREMELY annoying. I don't want to lose this info again when/if I update my itunes.
I now have over 10,000 songs on an external hard drive, along with the itunes folder/etc. I am using Windows XP. Can anyone here, anyone at all, tell me how I can update to the new version of iTunes without losing this info?
I will not update if I can't be guaranteed that this will work. I do NOT want to lose all this info again.

Ive had to update my software many many times actually and nothing ever was deleted.. The only time something was actually deleted was when i didnt update it when it told me to. Id say youd be safe to update it. If you are really worried about it you can back up your music first!!

If you are talking about a CDR disk, you may have a problem after restoring your Profile with having a "lock" on the individual files due to using a CDR and Firefox not working properly or an "alert" popping up. Easily solved by being observant after restoring your Profile and unlocking those files.

Text messages are included in your iPhone backup. Before switching over to the new phone, back up the old one, then restore this backup to your new phone. Connect the phone to your computer, but do not sync. Make sure iTunes is authorized to the same account that you bought the apps with. Then select "Transfer Purchases" from the iTunes File menu. Once this finishes the apps will be on your computer, so you can sync safely.

If your contacts, calendar, notes, etc. are synced to iCloud they will download back to your phone when you sign back into your iCloud account in Settings>iCloud. You can check to confirm that they are in iCloud by going to icloud.com from your computer and seeing if your data is there.

When I connected my iPod to make a playlist, I got a message saying that iTunes had "detected an iPod that might be corrupted" and I could disconnect and try again- which hasn't worked- or restore. Any thoughts? I don't want to lose all of my playlists.

What iPhone do you have? You can check in settings>>general>> about.
If you have a 3G you cannot update beyond iOS 4.2.1. The 3G is over 4 years old an was discontinued over 2 1/2 years ago. You need the latest ios to run the latest versions of some apps. If you have a 3GS you can update.
If your phone is not responding, reset it by pressing and holding down both the home button ad lock/ sleep button simultaneously until the Apple logo appears.

Need server vm but don't want to force users to download JDK

I need the numerical performance of the Windows 1.4.2 server vm for a 3D product I am working on, but don't want to force my users to download the entire JDK to get it. What is the official line regarding whether I can install just the server vm within their existing JRE? And can the vm be set within an applet?
This of course also poses issues such as version control, both dealing with what is currently installed and now also dealing with auto-updates.
I am currently paying a 325% performance penalty when using the client vm for numerical work!

JRE? No. Basically the entire JRE must be installed. There are certain parts that can be left out. You can check the readme for a list of those. I doubt it is going to save much.
I could be mistaken but I also think you will find that getting the VM to run in server mode will also require a configuration change in the browser - and you are not going to be able to do that via a normal applet. And it will impact all java from that point on as well.

Don't know passcode to iPod but don't want to lose everything!?

I just found my iPod and I cannot remember the passcode for the life of me. I tried twice & the second time it disabled for a minute, then a minute later after just one try it disabled for 5 minutes. I was just going to back it up & then restore it like last time this happened but this time it says that I need to unlock the iPod first. Unfortunately that's why I was trying to do that :-) I really really don't want to lose everything but don't know what to do. I just spent the past hour trying to figure it out, but no luck. If you backed up the iPad before you tried to update, you can restore the iOS and then restore from the backup. If you don't have a backup, there is nothing that you can do about it now.
You will have to restore the iPad in order to make it operational again and you will lose all of your data. If you don't sync with iTunes and cannot recover your media again that way, you can download most purchased content again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID.

Resetting my iPad but don't want to lose data

I need to return my work iPad to the company and therefore will be resetting it. How can I ensure I don't lose the data, how can I save it so that I can put this on a new iPad if I decide to get a personal one.
I also have an iPhone and don't want to lose anything from that when I reset my iPad, are they linked? Is there anyway to move this data across to my iPhone?
The data I'm worried about losing is the contacts, iMessages and bookmarks/favourites within Safari.

If, in iCloud settings on the iPad, you have Safari checked, your history and favourites will be synchronsied via iCloud and you'll be able to get them back on a new device synced to the same account. Same for contacts, calendar items and so on.

Boot Camp Version 1.3b expired.. need to update but don't have windows.

So let me run you through what I did so far.
I got a version of Boot Camp 1.3 beta. I successfully installed it and began to go through the steps to set up windows. I skipped the burning the windows CD option and went straight to the partitioning. I created a 20gig partition named "Bootcamp."
I then realized I needed to burn the windows CD from Boot Camp in order to install it. So I quit the Boot Camp Assistant Application. The option to burn the windows CD was no longer available so I scrapped the Boot Camp Assistant, re-downloaded the 1.3 beta version and installed it.
Still no opportunity to burn the windows drivers CD disc. So I quit the assistant once again. I attempted to re-open the Boot Camp Assistant and I got an error message telling me it expired. So I set the date back on my clock to a date before the beta version expired (prior to Sept. 30, 2007).
Then, I got this error message:
This version of Boot Camp Assistant is not supported in Mac OS X v10.5. Use Boot Camp Assistant 2.0, located in /Applications/Utilities/.
And that's where I am right now. I still have to have the date set back to before Sept. 30th, 2007 to get to the error message above or else it tells me the version is expired.
So I've determined that I need to update Boot Camp to version 2.0 or higher, except I don't have windows installed on my computer yet. The mac support page tells me that I have to open windows and then install the updates to the latest version of boot camp... which I obviously can't do because I haven't installed windows yet.
So I'm stuck with a partitioned drive and I cannot use the Boot Camp Assistant. I need the assistant to burn the windows install CD that I need..
I'm in quite a pickle. Any help would be appreciated.. thank you.

I don't have the Leopard disc because a man updated it for me in the mac store when I brought my laptop in for repairs.
You need to get that disk to use Boot Camp. Mac OS X 10.4 disks don't contain the drivers.
So, I have this Mac OSX install disc.. do I just insert it? And then what? How do I go about installing windows after that? I'm a little confused about how to get to the drivers and what to do I'm just not sure.
Once you've partitioned the drive and installed Windows, start up the computer into Windows and insert the disk. The installer should automatically start.
