Need to use color profiles? If so, which one?

1. Do I need to set a color profile in InDesign / Photoshop / Illustrator when matching a color to a Pantone Bridge book CMYK swatch?
2. If I do / do not use color management, will I have inconsistencies with my Photoshop tif and my Illustrator eps being placed into my InDesign doc, and finally output to PDF for an online printer?
I don't yet have a calibrated monitor and I need a visual reference that's reliable in terms of the fake "solid" color I'll be printing (a yellow-ish gold color)?
Thank you for any thoughts and input!

Let's see:
1.) The Pantone "Bridge" swatches are or can be used in addition to existing Pantone libraries already installed with the application(s). This can be done whenever it's convenient.
2.) Your color settings actually should be setup before you start designing, preferably when you've completed the installs. The concern is your RGB settings when you created the .tif in Photoshop. A workaround would be to open the file and "Assign Profile", hypothetically this would update the file and be updated in InDesign as well. The export to PDF is correct as long as the same color settings are applied.
3.) Your color settings are a personal preference, however I'd choose: RGB space = Adobe RGB, CMYK space = SWOP coated or US sheetfed coated v2, select: Use Blackpoint Compensation, and 20% dot gain ( default ).
Always consult the online printer and see what they accept and ask them if they have a profile. If they do, you should be able to "Assign Profile" in InDesign.
The Pantone reference books are based on US Prepress workspaces and are the defacto standard in the industry, so you can trust them.
Remember, it would be prudent for you to get an accurate proof before sending the job online. This gives you the opportunity to "catch" whatever mismatches ( if any ) occur before it ( the job ) goes to press.

  • Need help with Color Profiles between Photoshop and iPhoto

Hey guys, I'm a photographer and have always used Photoshop in comination with iPhoto. I am having great difficulty lately with color profiles randomly changing within albums of pictures. I need all of my images to be in sRGB, but some somehow end up in Adobe RGB. It seems to happen at random. Apple seems to think it's an Adobe problem. Adobe isn't sure what to do. Anybody aware of any known issues between CS5 and iPhoto using OS 10.8.4 with regard to color profiles and how to fix them?

The article also says you need Scribus to then further process the SVG file.
@shaunamm You need to open the SVGin Illustrator, not place it. But I doubt that you will be able to get the effects in Illustrator.

  • Newbie needs help with color profiles

somewhat new to digital photography and send most of my stuff to local lab (Costco) when needing to print. I have a mac, with Leopard, and use Lightroom to export to jpgs and upload to the lab site.
Simple enough, but I noticed their site had the icc's available to download. My intent is for lightroom to rendor and export the photos the way their lab will print them.
Why bother to really develop the picture to my liking if it is just going to print differently.
I dont use PS and not sure how I can, if at all, utilize the color profiles the lab provides in LR.
Sorry if I am not making sense, any and all help is appreciated from you really smart people:)
    Thanks

    See http://lagemaat.blogspot.com/2007/12/mildly-lightroom-workflow-for-printing.html
You can now also use the
LR/mogrify plugin to convert to any profile you want. Much quicker than the photoshop route.
Note that there is no reason to do this if you do not hardware calibrate your monitor. Otherwise sending them sRGB is more than good enough. On a Mac, make absolutely sure that you at least software calibrate your monitor. See http://www.computer-darkroom.com/colorsync-display/colorsync_1.htm
Doing this will already improve it quite a bit, but there is no substitute for hardware calibration.

  • Using Color profiles and exporting for web browsers

I've been trying to figure out the answer to this question. As I'm sure you're aware Safari supports color profiles while other web browsers like Firefox do not. I would like to setup Aperture so that it displays and exports images for the widest audience possible. Unfortunately it embeds a color profile and my images on the web only display correctly in Safari. I've tried changing the proofing profiles and export settings to no avail. I didn't seem to have this problem in iPhoto, a picture there looked the same on screen as it did in Safari and Firefox but I can't achieve the same with Aperture...

Thanks for that information, unfortunately I'm not really any closer to solving the issue since I've already tried that. 1) by default, doesn't Aperture automatically embed the sRGB color profile? 2) if I set view>proofing mode to sRGB shouldn't what I see on screen match what a "dumb" application such as Firefox does when it ignores the embedded profile and display sRGB? I've tried going into the preferences>export settings and changed everything to sRGB IEC61966-2.1 but I see no difference in the final image between that and the default setting.
I guess my question is more specific to Aperture since I don't have this problem with other applications. For example, in photoshop if I do Export for Web it strips out any embedded profile and when I open that image in Firefox and Safari side-by-side they are exactly the same. But not so when I export an image from Aperture, when opened in Firefox it is desaturated and flat and of course in Safari it honors the embedded profile and looks fine.

  • Need suggestion on Color Profile settings for printing image

I am trying to print the image below on a Xerox Docucolor 242.  Im trying to get a better understanding of profiles and all that, which I THINK I do now.
Under Color Settings in Indesign, I have under Working Spaces, RGB is set to my monitor brand and type and CMYK is set to my exact printer.  I have both of the Color Management Policies set to Off.
When I print the RGB version of this image, everything looks ok except for a very faded look.  Probably noticed mostly because of all the black background that is used.  When I print the CMYK version of it, it seems to print nice and dark but there is a strong white halo effect showing around both the flames which doesnt show on the screen or the RGB printout.
Anyone know what settings are causing the faded look in the RGB printout and the halo effects in the CMYK printout?

As others have said, this is a complex process, but one that is solvable.
I agree with others the RGB profile should NOT be the monitor but the profile of the original image. For most midrange cameras this will be sRGB or Adobe RGB depending on the settings in the Camera when the images was captured. It is NOT arbitary and choosing the wrong profile will have a large affect on the image.
The CMYK profile for the printer is more complex. There are two steps in calibrating and profiling a Xerox printer. First the calibration, or linearisation, sets the printer to a known state that can be repeated. This is best done with a spectrophotometer and not the CalorCal software provided by Xerox which uses a known colour chart scanned from the glass of the copier. The glass method of calibration does not calibrate correctly at the black end of the curve actually turns over reducing the available black, and is due to reflections from the glass. Calibration is normally done daily.
When the calibration has been completed a full ICC profile is created by printing a profile chart of some 2000 colours and reading this with the spectrophotometer. This is only valid for a calibrated printer and for the type of paper used. Different papers will require different profiles. It is a once only operation.
Another thing to watch out for is how your RGB images are being converted to CMYK. There is a setting both in the Creative suite and in the printer to set the black compensation. What you want to achieve is the same black as in the original image. In the CMYK case this will be printed as a combination of black toner pus a mixture of CMY to incread the density. The profile takes care of this for you.
Your description of weak blacks suggests that the black me be being printed as pure black toner.

  • Need  help using color checker passport with photoshop CS6

    Hello all,
I'm having an issue using the Color Checker Passport with Photoshop CS6.  Here's my configuration:
Mac Mini using OS 10.8, but very recently updated to 10.9 (Mavericks).  My problem is the same on either OS version.
    Photoshop CS6 ver 13.0.6 64 bit extended
    Adobe Camera Raw 8.4
X-Rite Color Checker Passport ver 1.0.2
Canon 70D shooting RAW in sRGB color space
NEC Multi-Sync LCD monitor calibrated with Spyder 3 Pro ver 4.0.5
Now here's the issue.  I go through the recommended workflow and generate a profile with no problem.  Then in Camera Raw (after restarting all applications) I apply the profile to a photograph and instead of getting a nice color-corrected image my image has a greenish-yellow tint to it.  It's very noticeable and I haven't been able to figure out what I'm doing wrong, if anything.  I re-calibrated the monitor, re-did the workflow with other pictures, but still get the same result.
I greatly appreciate any help or ideas on how to remedy this.  I've sent an inquiry to X-Rite via their Support Web Page, but haven't heard back from them yet.
    Thanks,
    Kevin H.

  • Newest version of firefox downloaded, i need an older version so that my adobe acrobat X pro 10.0 and Norton can be used as add ons. Which one please?

I need a different version of firefox to work with my adobe and norton. can someone please help me. I have tried the 32, 30, 29 and 22, they all say the add ons for those 2 plus one more add on i have say not compatible. I need firefox for work. Any info on how to make any of those work or which to try to work would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Norton updates frequently, so that should not be a big problem. If you run LiveUpdate several times, you likely can get a compatible toolbar. http://community.norton.com/blogs/product-update-announcements/firefox-32-support-norton-toolbar
The Adobe "Create PDF" extension is a more complicated issue. If you are stuck with version 1.2 (perhaps the last update available with Acrobat X?), this thread might be relevant: [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/999499 Firefox 29 broke Adobe Acrobat - Create PDF 1.2]. However, for security reasons, it would be better to try to figure out how to get it to work with Firefox 32.

I need to set up a home office using my MacBook Pro.  Does anyone know of brands of flat-screen monitors that I can plug into my  laptop in order to enlarge documents for better visibiilty?  I have 2 perfectly good flat screen monitors that work with Windows but they have no drivers compatible with Apple products.
    Thanks.

Apple has a 27" monitor with 2560 x 1440 resolution.  It has everything going for it but it has a price of $999 (ouch).  Check with OWC, they specialize in Apple peripherals, have decent prices and a good reputation.

  • Hard drive on macbook pro 13' needs to be replaced, any suggestions on which one as per today? mine was since 2009.

    Hello
i was told my HD needs to be replaced as it is damaged (no exact explanation here from Apple but nevermind)....so is there a specific HD to avoid to be installed? i bought my mac in october 2009. Thank you for the advice.

Thank you both, really useful info.My mac is for now 250 gb 5400rpm. I have to say this 250gb is enough for me.
I was offered as below for replacing the hard drive.
Would be Samsung a good option? hybrid one? for sure I take note no Western. And I would go indeed for 7200 rpm as suggested by you too.
New hard drives starting with the most expensive:
SSD hard drive instead of regular winchester:
    120 GB Samsung SSD meghajtó 28 000Ft +afa
    250 GB Samsung SSD meghajtó 42 000Ft +áfa
          -    winchesterek:
    320GB 5400rpm winchester  20 000Ft+áfa
    500GB 5400rpm winchester  22 000Ft+áfa
    1000GB 5400rpm winchester  27 000Ft+áfa
Faster winchesters with 7200 rpm ( a bit quicker than 5400rpm):
    320GB 7200rpm winchester  24 000Ft+áfa
    500GB 7200rpm winchester  26 000Ft+áfa
    * Hybrid Winchester:
It includes a 500 GB Winchester and a 8 GB SSD hard drive (hence hybrid ), combines the speed of SSD and the speed of the Winchester (it takes cca 30 sec to start the laptop instead of 90 seconds):
    500GB 7200rpm winchester +8GB SSD  34 000Ft+áfa
Also since my date needs to be saved/recovered by data saving company, I was suggested to bring an external HD.
Any suggestion on external HD to buy? or not to buy? then at least i will have a copy before getting new hard drive for my mac.
    Thank you

  • Need new computer ....help which one?

I have a budget of $325. I'm looking more at the $250 range but anyways. I need a desktop computer tower only that has good specs to run the sims 3 on at least medium settings. I don't care if it's refurbished or new. I'd prefer at least 4 gb of ram. Anyone point out some links to some? thanks

Unfortunately, in that price range, you're just not going to find a computer with enough hardware to run the game, most likely even at low settings.
You'll need to look for a computer with a dedicated graphics card, starting at a bare minimum of 500-600.

I know, I know - but its too expensive to order it from Toshiba, and the places I've found via Goggle look a bit dodgy.
    Would the

    PA3283U or
