Need tools to monitor bandwidth usage

Dear Folkz,
Is there any open source tool to monitor bandwidth on a switch port and take reports.?
plz help me!!

I think Open NMS (http://www.opennms.org/) and Cacti (http://www.cacti.net/) is one of the most used and best as per your requirements.

  • Monitoring Bandwidth usage for individual hosted sites on osx server?

Does anyone know of a good way to monitor bandwidth consumption for individual websites hosted on osx server?

Part of this answer depends on server configuration details that you haven't provided.
Are you looking for 'bandwidth' as in total bytes transferred for any given site? or are you looking for a megabits-per-second network throughput calculation?
Are your various sites logging to separate log files? or a single, unified log file?
If you want a total bytes transferred calculation, then that data is stored in the standard log files, so a simple parser that adds up the response sizes would suffice - it will tell you that x number of bytes/megabytes were transferred.
A bandwitch utilization graph (e.g. mbps) is a little trickier, though.
Are your sites running on the same port, using name-based virtual hosting to separate the traffic, or are they running on different ports?
If different ports then you may be able to implement some kind of network monitoring, but if they're all running on the same port (e.g. 80) then that doesn't work - you're down to Apache logging.
The standard Apache logs, though, don't include enough data to calculate a bandwidth graph. It does include timestamps of requests, and the total bytes in the reply, but that's not enough - the timestamp is only accurate to the second, and there's no indication of duration... for example, a 1mb web page served in 1 second equates to 8mbps, but that same file transferred in 30 seconds is only about 273kbps.
Since the transfer time is required to calculate the bandwidth utilization for the site, you'll need to amend your logging to include the transfer size. You'll need to enable mod_logio and add the %O (output bytes) and %T (request time) variables to your log format. Only then can you calculate the bits-per-second throughput of your site.

  • Tracking/monitoring bandwidth/usage

Scattered through our house we have six Macs all using our wireless network.  Every month we are running uo against or exceeding our alloted usage of 60GB. I'm almost 100 percent sure that my youngest is the largest user of bandwidth, but I want to understand (and be able to explain to him) what it is that he is doing that is driving the usage stats so high and thus have him curb the behaviour that is pushing us over.  So what I am trying to find is an app that will allow me to monitor usage on each of my machines down to a granular level - application and website would be great.  Does any such tool exist?
    Thanks

You might want to check out Open DNS. Not only will it track usage by user or computer, you will be able to see (and block) any websites that you do not want others to visit.

  • Can I monitor bandwidth usage?

    Hi
I have an Airport Express being used by two PC's and a Mac; I'm using a PC whilst my Macbook is repaired. But the internet gets really slow and I suspect someone (not me, one of the other two) is most likely downloading in extreme amounts. Is there an application of such that will allow me to see who's using the most bandwidth?

I run vnstat on my router and have it update the figures every 5 minutes. I don't know if it's very accurate since I get 3 different numbers for my interfaces:
    rx / tx / total / estimated
    eth0:
    yesterday 832.96 MB / 2,325 MB / 3,158 MB
    today 864.36 MB / 1,363 MB / 2,227 MB / 2,928 MB
    eth1:
    yesterday 2,371 MB / 862.99 MB / 3,234 MB
    today 1,396 MB / 885.23 MB / 2,282 MB / 2,998 MB
    ppp0:
    yesterday 3,011 MB / 3,724 MB / 6,735 MB
    today 1,311 MB / 787.56 MB / 2,099 MB / 2,758 MB
Unfortunately (more like OMFG YES IT'S GOD'S GIFT!!!!) my ISP's traffic monitor is totally screwed up so I have no way of comparing these numbers.
I don't think it eats up a lot of resources tho, so you could run it together with other apps.

  • Monitoring Bandwidth Use

Now that Comcast is placing a limit on bandwidth use, I would like to know if there is a way to monitor bandwidth usage on the ATV. Comcast advised that you can download software onto computers that monitor bandwidth usage. However, I'm not sure if this would work on ATV.
My concern is that we use our ATV for a huge percentage of our media content.
Anyone else concerned about this bandwidth limit?

In some cases the interface with your router will allow you to reset your up and down data count, you could possibly monitor your usage that way.

  • Tools for Monitoring Usage?

    Usage Alerts
This tool helps you monitor your usage via free text messages sent directly to your mobile device and / or emails sent to your email account. We offer two different types of free usage alerts: data usage alerts and voice and messaging alerts.
Voice and Messaging Alerts: If you have usage based pricing for voice or messaging, we may send you a free text message alert if you exceed, or are trending to exceed, your allowances on or around the twentieth day of your bill cycle.
    How to Get It
Usage alerts are included with all usage based plans; no initial setup is required.
I just had a bill with $112 overage for voice, I believe the overage began 13 days before the end of my billing cycle.  If I'm reading the above correctly I should have been notified but wasn't.  Associate I spoke with couldn't explain but did offer 30% discount.  @.45/min. the charge is much too high anyway.   Can anyone explain why I wasn't notified so I could avoid this overage?

I understand your frustration of receiving a bill that isn't what you expected but sometimes this happened because a number of possible things that may have been over looked or even simply a possible error but I have to point out that the usage automated system updates daily but isn't guaranteed to be 100% reliable because of a number of different variables that could cause the information to be off.  My suggestion is to use the #BAL from the device or #MIN to check usage, these are usually closer to the correct usage balance.
Another got suggestion to avoid this from happening is to log into your MyVerizon app on your device or online and keep track of your activity there..

  • FF resolution settings to lower bandwidth usage

Which versions of FF will do this and what specific settings are there to lower bandwidth usage?
Also, will the FF settings override settings on websites such as youtube? For example, if my kids were to click on higher resolution or HD video settings for their youtube videos, what would happen?

Changing the resolution doesn't have any effect on the Firefox performance and may even look worse if you operate an LDC monitor not in its native resolution.
You can block content if you ant to improve performance on a low bandwidth connection.
You can look at Adblock Plus.

  • Thinking of purchasing EA6500. Can it monitor bandwidth use by device

I'm thinking of purchasing a Cisco Linksys EA6500. I need a router that can one monitor bandwidth used by device. Keep exceeding our ISP's network bandwidth allocation, need to identify the devices that are causing this high usage and be able to do so from the router. Does the EA6500's standard software support this, is their router software one can obtain for the unit that does this or is there another home router option that can perform this function? Stephen, Madeisky

If I were in your shoes, I would find a router that supported it. Linksys routers aren't designed and marketed for stuff like that.
As was previously said, netgear routers are the only ones that I'm aware of that do that. But there could be others.

  • Thunderbolt bandwidth usage App?

HI there - can anyone point me to an application that allows me to monitor the realtime bandwidth usage of each of the thunderbolt buses on the nMP. There are regular times during my work where I need to know if I'm maxing out a particular bus, or whether I could be loading it up more by taking a device off another bus. So if anyone knows of an app that allows me to quickly see how each bus is being utilised that would be awesome. Cheers.

    Are you asking a question?

  • Excessive bandwidth usage

My wife's school has been using SGD for for a couple of years to allow her to remote desktop to her school PC from our home one - using just Word and Excel. In the last couple of months SGD has gone from using a few hundred MB per day to ~5-8GB per day - that is more than we used to use in a month! Does anyone know why this may have occurred?
Is there anything that can be done to reduce it?
Needless to say our ISP is very happy to charge us extra for all the extra bandwidth we now need. Nothing has changed at our end.

    Hi.
Do you know which SSGD release has been installed on the server (at school I mean)?
You could simply ask an SSGD administrator to type "/opt/tarantella/bin/tarantella version" to find it out.
That's rather strange since SSGD is highly optimized as to reduce the network traffic.
Are you sure it's SSGD which is causing that huge bandwidth usage?
Give a network monitor/sniffer (eg, http://netlimiter.com/download.php) a try so see if there's something else which is hogging your bandwidth.
    Cheers,

  • SIP trunking monitoring and usage report

    Hello all,
Recently the IP telephony system has migrated to SIP trunking from PRI.   SIP trunking is running on CUBE 2900 serials.
Could anyone advise the following?    much appreciate it.
    .  SIP trunking monitoring :
If MIB needed,   any brief steps to configure it on monitored device and monitoring system?
. SIP trunking usage report :
Any software/application could generate the usage report?   and show the cocurrent calls?
    Thanks again,
    master002

Thanks Nadeem for the reply,  looks Variphy Insight is the option?
I have installed RTMT and was able to get the real time data instead of the usage report.  I also have CUOM -- operation manager, I haven't customized it to monitor SIP trunking yet.
As my previous post mentioned,  any one could share the idea or experience on SIP trunking monitoring and usage report?
    Thanks again,

  • WRT160N Bandwidth usage

Does this router monitor or meter bandwidth usage? Using Vista Home Premium OS, two other computers with WMP54GS and WMP54G PCI adapters and a PSP.
Can it be configured to monitor or meter usage? Can I see the actual usage in real time?
Question 2: (I can ask this elsewhere if you want) Is there a way to extend the antenna on WRT54G & S adapters since they tend to become shielded by the computer case itself?
    Thanks

No Linksys router do not monitor band width.nor they can be coinfigured to do so. You can use high gain antennas for the adapters.

  • What is the actual bandwidth usage?

When I use Adobe Connect I am online and broadcasting for about 4 hours a day, for 10 days at a time. I only do screen sharing and voice -- no video.
I have DSL Internet. The DSL upload speeds are very poor (under 1Mb). To speed things up, I thought I'd look into getting a 4G hotspot, but I'm worried about actual bandwidth usage, since such plans have a practical limit of 5 or 10Gb per month.
My off-hand guess is that If I were to watch a video of myself, I guess it would be a couple of gigs for a four hour, non-HD video. So by that very rough guestimate, I'd hit 20Gb pretty easily over the 40 hours of my meeting. Is that right the way to think about it?
Has anyone monitored actual consumed bandwidth for a simple meeting of one person talking and sharing his screen? I'm not looking for definitive answers -- just some ballpark estimate of what such a meeting consumes each hour...
    Thanks! :-)

Page 22 of this document will give you some numbers that will allow you to estimate the total data used for a meeting. Keep in mind these numbers are what Adobe saw as average consumption, yours may be higher or lower.

  • Adobe CC - Bandwidth usage

I live in the sticks, unfortunately my only option for internet is satellite which has limited monthly bandwidth usage. My question is, Abobe CC constantly send and receive data, which would use my bandwidth usage?

    Hi Fabian,
Thanks for your interest in Typekit!  The font licensing through Typekit does not include the option to embed the fonts in a native app. In order to use a font in an app, you will need to purchase a separate license from the foundry.
For more details, please refer to the "Typekit Font Licensing" help page.
We hope to be able to support embedded fonts in the future, but it isn't available at this time. Sorry I couldn't be of more help; please let me know if you have any other questions.

  • High bandwidth usage while inactive

Twice today I've glanced at Activity Monitor's Dock icon, which I have set to view Network Usage, and saw a large amount of data streaming continuously through my internet connection.
This morning when I noticed it for the first time, I poked around my system, and after not seeing any other programs (Safari, Software Update, etc.) being active, I tried quitting Messages Beta - and the bandwidth instantly dropped down to nothing. At that time, it was moving around 60KB/sec upstream, and probably around half that downstream according to Activity Monitor.
A few minutes ago this evening, I saw it happen again - my Activity Monitor was showing heavy continuous bandwidth usage. This time I simply set my status to 'Offline' in Messages Beta and once again it instantly dropped down to nothing. This time the bandwidth was closer to 160kb/sec upstream, and half that downstream! When I changed my status back to 'Available' a few seconds later, everything continued on normally, with almost no data usage.
I had no active chats going, never used video, screen or file sharing - so what in the world is Messages Beta doing with so much data streaming? I'm quite mystified, and wondering if anybody else has seen this happen....

The issue seemed to be local network traffic.
